Biggest difference is in hunting. I once shot a 70 lb redbone hound, that was killing calves, with a 22 mag. Hit him, at 40 yards, in the chest as he was running toward me. He looked like a stovepipe afterwards. Big difference in power over the 22 LR. I have one that is scoped. Good gun for a limited purpose.

Great post Dave. Thanks Edited to add; I had a cousin there on Omaha. Most decorated man of WWII in Kentucky. He had 9 purple hearts. Claude Jack Reed was his name. I spoke at his funeral a few years ago. His wife told me he never had a good nights sleep, after he came home, unless he was medicated which he refused. He would sleep a couple hours, get up, and listen to the radio, and drink coffee. He was a good man. I worked at the Post Office and a co worker, whos husband worked at the local VA Hosp, and for all intents and purposes was a draft dodger hiding in college rather than getting drafted, said all those patients were just drug attics and drunkards. It infuriated me. I turned around and told her she had no Idea what she was talking about. I told her she couldn't imagine the things some of these men seen, and done to mankind, and as a result the daemons floating in some of these men's heads as a result. I told her not to judge them too harshly.

Grandson developed a bad infection last week. Was taken beck to the hospital for further treatment, but got to come home yesterday on 2 kinds of antibiotics, and a new treatment regiment. His mom, and caregiver, is totally emotionally and physically exhausted. We have been helping her as much as possible, but my wife had hip replacement surgery yesterday. We think he picked up the infection from being in the hospital, initially.

I purchased a 1/4 drive socket set, from Lows, a couple months ago. I don't believe the Craftsman tools are as well built as older tools were.

Grandson went to the burn hospital today. Got an excellent report. The burn Dr said his face was healing great and his 3rd degree burns on his arms and neck will not require skin grafts, at this time. He cautioned them on infection and told them that they had to keep up his wound care and keep the 3rd degree burn areas as moist as possible. Also they needed to keep the burn areas covered at all times. He had a scare this morning. He had scratched the blood out of his arms, in his sleep last evening. Of course he is on pain meds and did not realize he was scratching so hard. The Dr told him/them the itching was normal and to cut his fingernails and put gloves on his hands to keep from scratching so hard at night. This was under his dressings that he did that. The dressings were still on his arms, but had blood on them. The Dr told them the itching was coming from the regeneration of damaged nerves, and the healing process around the burns themselves. We are delighted no skin grafts are needed and hope that continues. It takes his mother 2 hours to clean and recover the burn areas twice a day. He has made wonderful progress, the Dr said almost unbeliavible, considering the initial burns. Our prayers have been answered so thanks all of you who prayed for him and them. Most of all thank a "Loving God" for our great news. We are so encouraged and relieved. Got to be careful of infection, but every day that goes by the chances go down on that also. Mason asked him about the discoloration on his face, and the Dr was truthful with him. Told him it was going to take time for his coloration to come back, and that it may not come back completely, for sure in the most damaged areas. Being 15 he is worried about his looks and that is totally understandable. He explained it might take 2 years for them to recover completely, or as mush as the will. Dr told him his face will probably recover better than the 3rd degree burns and if his arms do have scaring, that he can wear long sleeve shirts. Told Mason he is a lucky child that most of the worst burns can be covered if he has areas of bad scars. Mason was a little disappointed but relieved that his face most likely will clear up in time. His mother said he was worried about going back to school.

When I trained new shooters I always started with a 22 Long Rifle Revolver, or sig semi auto pistol in 22 LR. I am a firm believer one needs to get the basics of shooting down before drifting into the higher power/ more recoil handguns. YMMV. My latest venture is in the MP 2.0 9C semi auto pistol. I have purchased 2. Am working them into my daily carry although am not leaving my 7 shot Taurus 357 mag pocket carry for now. I am still trying to convince myself my M P are reliable enough and I can shoot them well enough to bet my life on. My M P carry 15 rounds and are flatter than the revolver but are not pocket carry guns. Also working on practical carry gear for the M P's. Edited to add; I recently read a story about the church shooting, in Colorado, where Jene Assam stopped the shooter with her 9 MM Police carry pistol. She was a former Police Officer and was a Security Team Volunteer, at her church. The guy that was also on the Security Team, and leader of it, also arrived at the scene of the shooter and had to prepare to face a heavily armed shooter carrying an AR 15 rifle, and also a handgun. He prepared himself, behind cover, to intercept the shooter who was coming down the hallway. He said he looked at the guy, pulled his weapon, and then realized he was confronting a heavily armed shooter with a literal mouse gun. He had a Taurus tip up barrel 32 mini pistol. His pistol had a 1 7/8" brl, with 7 shots of 32 acp ammo. The thought flashed in his mind, how am I going to do this. Fear entered him with that realization. He told himself how stupid is this! Here I am supposed to be an intelligent man standing here facing a crazed determined shooter with not even a good rock. Fortunately Jene Assam appeared, in his sight line, coming from another adjoining hallway, just ahead of him, and intercepted and stopped the perp with her duty Glock service pistol( IMS, A Glock Mdl 17, 9MM that she was thoroughly trained with). The guy said to himself, "Never again, will I go to work with a gun that is very easy to carry, but is an inadequate mouse gun. I could not imagine standing in a hallway facing an AR 15 armed shooter with that gun. I actually purchased one of those guns(tip up brl 32) years ago. Didn't take me long to realize that thing would be practically useless in a real combat situation, and further more was not designed for that purpose. I want a substantial handgun, and would prefer a long gun, but realize that is not always possible, most times. I refuse to carry a small gun knowing how inadequate they are for combat. Small guns are designed to be get off me guns, hand to hand tools. At my age, and with my disabilities, I don't do hand to hand very effectively, any longer. Since this is your first gun, do train yourself. My best advice, carry a substantial weapon. Wont be easy to carry, but one can dress around the gun. Like the guy on the Security Team realized, much too late, you wont be so under gunned, "HOPEFULLY". You will have a tool "Possibly" up to the job. Then it will be up to your Training, and your ability with an appropriate size revolver or pistol. My recommendation is nothing smaller than 38 Spl or 9 MM. Your opinion might be different, and that is O K. I pocket carry a 7 shot 357 mag revolver. This may anger some, but it is fact.

Got a sale notice this morning, from Midway, on free shipping, and they are running a sale on 44 spl ammo. Usually their free shipping does not apply to ammo, however this morning it does. I ordered Sig Elite V-Crown 200 gr 18.29 for 20, Hornady Critical Defense 165 gr 23.50 per 20, Hornady Custom 180 gr 17.95 per 20, and Underweood 200 gr 44 spl I7.89 for 20 ammo this morning. Have plans to shoot all of them, along with the Speer God Dot 200 gr I ordered yesterday 24.00 per 20, into water jugs. When I get the ammo and time to test them I will post the results, if any are interested in water jug test. Got shootin-to-do. Happy, happy, happy!

Thanks for the well wishes and epically the prayers. He is a tough kid, but ,unfortunately, has a long road to healing completely ahead of him, as many know. His parents are scared of the pain meds, but they must be used in this case. He woke up trembling with pain one morning. Truly disheartening to see him go through this. He calls me every day.

My 15 year old grandson was burned bad, last Saturday night. He and some of his friends, had a bonfire, as they had a tree go down in a recent storm. The boys lit a brush pile. Most of them were standing on a hay wagon, and Mason jumped off to throw some sticks in the fire. As he reacher over the end of the burn pile someone had thrown a half used can of spray paint in the pile that they did not know about. The paint can exploded as Mason leaned over the fire and set his shirt on fire. He had a pair of his dads flame retardant trousers on which saved his legs from burns. Little fella has been in the burn unit at Vandserbilt Hospitall in Nashville, however he has been home now for a couple days. He has severe burns on both arms, hands, fingers and head and neck. I think they figured 14% of his body was burned. Guys, it is rough. My wife goes over and helps our daughter dress his burns daily. He goes back to Vanderbilt on Monday to see if they are doing his wound care well enough to keep him home. He is in terrible pain and it is hard for me to watch them replace the bandages. They fear 3rd degree burns on his arms and hands. Time will tell. They told him it will be 6 months to a year for him to heal providing he gets no infections.

Thanks Greyfox. I am partial to Gold Dots and will try and find some 200 gr soon. Just never fired any 44 spl and am going down that road as I can't shoot much 44 mag any longer.

I have a SW 629 44 mag I don't shoot much any more. I was wondering if anyone has any good recommendation, in 44 Spl, for self defense purposes, or house gun? I don't reload 44 spl so need factory ammo suggestions.

I Just finished reading a book written and published in 2019, by Robert A Waters, and his son Sim Waters. It is a story of 23 self defense cases, over the time period of 2005 to 2016. The reason given for it not being later than 2016 is it takes several months/years to get the full and complete story about criminal cases and do the research on them. All of these cases were where the citizen used a gun to successfully defend his life with a satisfactory ending. What amazes me about everyone of these cases is how extreme these fights are to be able to survive the encounter. I mean when one is in a fight for your life, one usually starts behind the curve and has to react to aggression immediately. In most of these cases, there was a time lapse, on the victims part, to get into a defensive mindset, and come to the conclusion, hey! I need to be fighting for my life here. It appears to me that that one fact gets these 23 people into a life death struggle very fast. In fairness to the book, one account was a concealed carrier coming up on a traffic stop gone really bad. Unlike the numerous people watching the beat down, this guy acted. That citizen never hesitated to do his best to stop the perp from beating the young officer to death with his hands. The downed officer begged the citizen to end the fight. He was successful, but it took 3 shots from a 40 caliber handgun before the perp relented, and later passed. They all were not like the movies, guys. It was a good read and very informative about the 23 crime stories of survival with firearms.

I retired in 2004, at age 56, from the Post Office. My advice is to be completely out of debt before you retire. We had our home paid for and owed no one. My Wife was an RN, and put 25 years in and got a full retirement also. I did a lot of church work, baby sit grand kids, had hobbies, and have not been board at all. We purchased our first RV in 2001 and have enjoyed the camping life throughout our retired years. Am 71 now, and dealing with health issues but still running the RV up and down the road, and doing house work and stay busy all the time. Go for it, but realize your standard of living will probably be scaled back. I never wanted to retire then work part time, but it works for some.

I have had bad luck with the grass stand on my newly constructed back yard shooting range. We had to leave shortly after I finished the grass sowing and we have had 4 weeks of 90+ degree days without any rain at all. We got 1/2 inch of rain the day after I sowed the seed and not one sprinkle afterwards. The grass sprouted with a good stand then perished in the hot dry days to follow. Only have a very light bit of grass left. My sister gave up her fight with cancer 3 weeks ago and when we were called we left immediately for Sebring Fla, and only got 2/3 of the way down there before she passed. She was my first sibling that left our family. I still have 2 more sisters, one older(78) and one younger(69) than I. Death is hard, but one simply must be prepared for it, however those left behind have a hard time afterwards. She is not suffering any longer. Cancer can be very bad for quiet a while. Went out yesterday and resewed some of the spots that had nothing on them. Got so hot I had to quit at noon(99 yesterday afternoon). Doing some more sowing this morning and put some fertilizer over the area also. Expecting rain Sunday(70%) and Monday (60%). Also expecting fall like temps for a while. We have had 30 days of above 90 temps last month with yesterdays afternoons 99 degree temp. I will water, with a sprinkler, it if need be. We decided to visit our daughter and grandson in Jacksonville Beach/Ponta Vedra Fla area, and youngest daughter/husband and 2 grand children, in Mt Pleasant S Carolina on the way back from Florida. Hope I can get some more grass growing before real cold temps this fall. Believe my shooting range will be a nice thing in the future. Ordered me some stands and am ordering some cardboard humanoid targets from a address I got off the internet this morning. Hope all of you have a good day. Edited to add; Going to take a friends advice, and get me a 55 gallon barrel, with a lid, to put my tape/ targets and supplies so I will not be forced to lug all that stuff to the range every time me and sweetie uses it.

I think Sturgill made the right choice also. He does not have to deal with shooting the guy, nor maybe even killing him. Death caused by you, is hard to live with. Most times, it gets harder as one ages, even if justified. As far as the perp goes, he seems to be bent on a life of crime(15 home invasions). It is not hard to find a job in Nashville. It would be interesting to see if one could give the guy a break, and he actually took it, or would he take advantage of one who offered the break. Also he could be a dope head needing a lot of money to support his habit. Who knows?

We hiked in the Ashville N C area, last week. Went on a good marked trail, but one, with no since of direction like me, can get lost on good trails. I like hiking, but don't ever feel safe doing it. Hiked the "Fiery Gizzard" in South Cumberland S P also, and felt uneasy. Glad the old guy was found safe.

I have a Henry I purchased 3 years ago. It is a keeper, and I don't have a problem with the tube magazine. Mine shoots 38's or 357 reliable.
