I'd take Young over Leinart all day long. But I agree with you on Cutler. He had a pretty bad season last year, but he is playing great this year with a new OC. I think it would have been a good idea for the Titans to trade down and take the Vandy guy. But hindsight is 20-20, though I never had really high hopes for Young as an NFL QB. He was fantastic in college though.

It was the 100 rd. bulk pack WWB. I'm not worried about it since I know it wasn't a weapon problem. I have always had good luck with WWB and will continue to use it for plinking, but I wouldn't count on it for SD. The prices I've seen have been around $1,200-1,250. I got a really good deal on mine, although I would have paid the $1,250+. I like it that much.

Yes, you can build a 1911 from parts and it is perfectly legal. The only part that has to be purchased from an FFL would be the frame. But it's not like putting an AR-15 together, there is a lot of fitting involved. Nearly every part will have to be fitted by hand, even if it is a "drop in" part. You could easily buy an RIA complete for the cost of a slide and frame and modify it from there. Personally, I wouldn't even think of trying to build an officer(3-3.5" barrel) sized pistol though.

STI makes some fine 1911s. The Spartan is made in the Philippines by Armscor using STI internal parts. They have a very good reputation and are considered by many to be among the very best in their price range. All other STI guns are USA made. The Trojan also has an excellent reputation, they run around $1,000 new. The only difference in capacity between the STIs and the Smiths is the magazine itself. STI mags are made by Metalform and are reported to be very reliable. S&W uses Wilson Combat mags and they are also supposed to be very reliable. The STIs are true 1911 pattern pistols, so any 9mm 1911 pattern magazine will work in the STI Trojan and Spartan, including the Wilson Combat 10rd. mags.

Nothing wrong with a plastic guide rod. Lots of very successful and very reliable pistols come standard with plastic guide rods. But if you really want metal, I like the traditional style (non full length)Ed Brown guide rods and plugs. LngRngShtr, STI standard FLGRs are also pre-drilled for a paper clip.

Seems like most street prices I see are in the $1,200 range. I wound up paying about $1,250 OTD for mine. That's the best price I've seen anywhere.

I agree. The XD doesn't really offer anything that the Glock doesn't. The S&Ws have the advantage of being US made, which one would think should help with getting contracts. I know I would prefer if my tax dollars were spent keeping American employees working. The Austrians can fend for themselves.

I just picked up a S&W 1911 a few days ago and am very impressed with the fit, finish, and function so far. I think the Doug Koenig's would be fine pistols. Dan Wesson also has a very good reputation in the 1911 world. They are a highly respected maker. No MIM and lots of Ed Brown parts. Gotthegoods mentioned Fusion and they are highly respected as well. All of their guns are built to order. There are no production models, just base models that are used as a starting point for custom builds. Lead times are pretty long though. Also, Bob Serva, the man who owns Fusion, used to be the president of Dan Wesson.

Dollar for dollar Weaver has some of the best glass I've seen. I picked up a V16 on sale from Midway and was really surprised by how amazingly good the image quality was for the money. I have Leupolds that cost 4 times as much that don't have better glass. I've heard really good things about the Super Sniper scopes too, but haven't had a chance to use one.

Glock's real home run was building a pistol that was reliable AND cheap. Sure, there have been cheaper guns that weren't as reliable. And guns that were just as reliable, but not as cheap. Now with the XDs and M&Ps, Glock has some competition on both fronts.

I took my new S&W 9mm 1911(178017) to the range for the first time today and must say I'm impressed. First a pic- I was a little leery of buying a 1911 in 9mm as they have a reputation for being finicky, but I have always wanted to try one. So I took the plunge Wednesday and purchased the aforementioned Smith and Wesson. So far I have run 122 rounds through it(WWB and Win. HPs) with one failure. It was caused by bad ammunition. One round of the WWB that I bought Wednesday from WalMart failed to fire. My first thought was that it must be a light primer strike as I can't remember ever having an ammunition failure before with factory centerfire ammo(or with my reloads either, for that matter). But it wasn't a light primer strike, the primer was struck normally it just didn't go off. Accuracy was very good, though not quite as good as my STI Lawman .45. But better than my Beretta M9 that I took along as well. The only complaint I have is that the sights are off very slightly. It is shooting on average 1-2" left at 25 yards. Either that or I'm off by 1-2" to the left at 25, which is probably the more likely cause. Either way, that's not much of a gripe as the sights are drift adjustable for windage. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this new 1911 so far. I'm actually even coming around to the idea of an external extractor on a 1911. I am now seriously considering a Smith and Wesson 1911 Commander as my next handgun.

For reliability, the only .22 pistols I would really trust are the Browning Buckmarks and Ruger Mark 1,2,and 3. These have the best reputation of the common .22 pistols. That doesn't mean that others aren't as good. I have a Mark III and it is extremely reliable. The biggest reliability downfall of all .22 pistols is the .22 rimfire cartridge itself.
