  1. And some people think that others should foot the bill for them because, for whatever reason, they can't do it for themselves. I lost my job last year and was lucky enough to find another one. I make about half what I made before and yet I still pay all of my bills and provide for myself. I had to make a lot of sacrifices, but I still manage. I don't understand what makes some people feel that they deserve to be given things that other people earned. You do know that the people you are counting on to save and provide for us during these difficult economic times are exactly the same people that brought about this situation in the first place don't you? The same people whose "business" is trillions of dollars in debt? Do you not see the irony in that? Cliff
  2. There's the way that things are and the way that things are supposed to be. The way things are the feds have near complete control over the states, which is exactly the opposite of the way things are supposed to be. Hopefully this bill and others like it can help return states rights and reinstate the Tenth Amendment which, at this point in the minds of the feds, is simply the mindless ramblings of a bunch of prehistoric old farts and not meant to be taken literally.
  3. I would agree with this, except that I believe private property should still be allowed to be posted by the owner if desired. Not because I agree with it, but because I believe it is the right of the property owner. All public property should be open to the lawful carry of firearms.
  4. What is quite unusual is that the 30th, 80th, and 106th Infantry Divisions served in Europe and not in the Pacific theater. But the ribbon is clearly an Asiatic-Pacific Campaign ribbon. It's possible that he may have traded for the patches or, more likely, been assigned to those units after being a POW(none of the three divisions mentioned arrived in Europe until 1944). It could also be possible that he served in the Pacific and then in Europe where he was then captured and held as a POW. It would also not be impossible to get hypothermia in a Japanese POW camp, particularly one in northern Japan.nokomom, Your best bet to learn more about your grandfathers service would be to follow Mike's advice and see if you could obtain his service records. I'd be very curious to know the whole story. If he served in both the Pacific and European theaters that would be very unusual indeed. And if he survived four campaigns in the Pacific and then went to Europe where he was captured and held as a POW that would be a truly amazing story. Cliff
  5. Found the other two patches. The khaki patch with blue mountains is the 80th Infantry Division aka the "Blue Ridge" Division. The blue, red, and white patch with gold lion's head is the 106th Infantry Division. Cliff
  6. I found some information on the patches and ribbons. The yellow ribbon with red, white, and blue stripes is The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign ribbon. The stars indicate that your grandfather was involved in four campaigns. The red ribbon with three white stripes on each end is an Army Good Conduct ribbon. The blue and red patch that looks like an H with three X's in it is a US Army 30th Infantry Division patch. I'm still trying to find the other two patches. Cliff
  7. I'm sorry to hear that member(s) of your family have preexisting medical conditions and are unable to get insurance. If the health care bill exclusively provided for those that were unable to get insurance in the private sector, then it wouldn't be nearly as objectionable. But that's not the point of the current nationalized health care bill. It's not just about providing for the healthcare of those who are uninsurable or are too poor to afford health insurance(Isn't this what Medicaid is for?). It's about control. Controlling what kind of coverage you have to have(and pay for, and fining you if you CHOOSE to roll the dice and not have insurance or to have insurance that the government does not approve of), controlling how much doctors and hospitals are allowed to charge for their services, controlling which procedures you will and will not be allowed to have. Of course if you want free health care the best thing to do would be to immigrate to Mexico, renounce your US citizenship, and then slip across the border back into the US. BAM- free health care. I have no illusions that the insurance companies are "wonderful" or "benevolent", they are in business in a supposedly FREE MARKET to make a profit. We are taxed out the wazoo already and we'll wind up paying big for this health care plan. If they want to make this completely optional- you can choose if you want/need government health care and be taxed for it accordingly, or you can choose to have whatever insurance you want, or you can choose to have no insurance at all without any fines, taxes, or other penalties, and you can do all of this without government interference in free enterprise- then I'm okay with it. But if the government is going to tell free people what they must have and free enterprise what they must charge, then I'm sorry but that's socialism not liberty. Now if you want to talk about setting maximum limits on civil court awards for medical malpractice, thereby greatly reducing the cost of malpractice insurance and, by extension, the cost of medical care as a whole, then I might be agreeable to that. I'd also favor stiffer penalties and fines for people who commit insurance fraud, which would lower the costs of all forms of insurance. First, I don't hate government when it knows it's roll and keeps to it. I do hate government when it's oversteps it's bounds and tramples on the rights of free people. Second, these "vultures" have gone in to business to make a profit, and their services have proven invaluable to millions of people. If you don't mind my asking, just exactly which industries are allowed to make a profit and which ones are not?Cliff PS- No, I do not work in the health care industry or for an insurance company, but I am a firm believer in individual and economic freedom. If I wanted a government nanny, there are any number of countries that I could move to. But I would prefer to pursue life, liberty, and happiness on my own, taking my own risks and accepting the consequences, without unreasonable government restrictions and controls.
  8. So exactly what would be considered a real source. You are more than welcome to show me any other source than can directly refute any of the claims made in that article.Just from a brief look at the Census report linked by canadienmike: 1) Uninsured making $50,000 to $74,999 per year- 8,459,000 2) Uninsured making over $75,000 per year- 9,283,000 3) Uninsured who are not citizens- 10,231,000 Total number of uninsured- 46,995,000 Total number of uninsured less those groups listed above- 19,067,000 Also, between 2006 and 2007 the number of uninsured whites and blacks DECREASED. The number of uninsured asians, native Americans, and Pacific islanders remained approximately the same. The only group which saw a statistically significant increase in number of uninsured were Hispanics, which should come as no surprise due to illegal immigration. Cliff
  9. Sounds about right. I used to get notifications when Midway would get primers in. Never even got close to being able to buy any. They were usually all gone within an hour at the most.
  10. Welcome to TGO!
  11. Just ordered 3k for myself. Thanks for the tip.
  12. Here is a story from The Business and Media Institute: Health Care Lie: '47 Million Uninsured Americans' You can read it for yourself, but I'll hit a few key points here- all from the aforementioned article, most statistics are taken directly from the 2005 Census Bureau report: 1) "there are 8.3 million uninsured people who make between $50,000 and $74,999 per year"(should be able to afford insurance) 2) there are "8.74 million (uninsured) who make more than $75,000 a year"(should be able to afford insurance) 3) there are "9.487 million (uninsured)people who are 'not a citizen.' †4) "the number of uninsured American citizens who do not qualify for current government programs and make less than $50,000 a year is between 13.9 million and 8.2 million"(see 5) 5) the "8.2 million figure for the chronically uninsured only includes those uninsured for two years or more. It is also worth noting, that, 45 percent of uninsured people will be uninsured for less than four months according to the Congressional Budget Office." Cliff
  13. From everything I've heard Wolf primers have a reputation for being on the harder side.
  14. Congrats on finally getting to shoot your first reloads. It is addictive.
  15. I'm the only one who has the combo to my safe. My family knows where they can go to get it if something should happen to me.
  16. Elizabethton and Johnson City.
  17. I'll add my vote for Greg's Pizza in Johnson City too. Best pizza I've ever had anywhere I've been in the country. Italian Village/Raffaele's is pretty good too. But as someone else said, their sauce is their weak point.
  18. Same here. I send emails to my state and federal representatives regularly and never get any junk mail. I have been called to participate in over the phone town hall meetings before though. But I don't mind as it's a good opportunity to hear other peoples thoughts on issues and talk directly to my reps. if I get the opportunity.Cliff
  19. Well I work in construction and I can tell you it's bad, real bad. I've made less money this year than I have in the first three months of any of the last ten years. I was a commercial(retail)steel framer, finish carpenter, and field superintendent and never lacked for work, in fact I frequently had to turn down jobs. Since the housing market has pretty much died, there is a huge amount of competition for the very few commercial jobs(compared to years past) out there because all of the residential AND commercial contractors are going after them. Right now I'm doing any work I can get my hands on and am just barely able to make ends meet. Hopefully things will improve next year, but this year is going to be all about survival. I can't even tell you how many people I personally know who are in much, much worse shape than I am. I've actually been one of the lucky ones, at least around here, as I've been able to stay busy most of the time. Cliff
  20. Hong Man Choi is definitely bigger than Lesnar, but I doubt he's stronger and I know he's slower and a lot less athletic. I would love to see Fedor in the UFC against Lesnar. That could be the best heavyweight MMA fight of all time. I really admire Fedor, he is my favorite heavyweight and may be the greatest heavyweight ever. He is incredibly smart in the ring, has tremendous punching power, and great sambo and judo. Watch the Emelianenko vs Arlovski fight if you want to see classic Fedor. Arlovski was winning the fight pretty easily, but Fedor never lost his cool and as soon as Arlovski made one mistake he went to sleep courtesy of a short, quick right hand. Fedor vs Arlovski FightVideoI think White will probably offer Fedor as much as anyone else when his Affliction contract is up. The only question then will be if Fedor wants to fight the best in the world, or if he wants to protect his legacy and not risk a loss. Cliff
  21. Ordinarily I don't like to see a guy get that one last shot in when his opponent is clearly out. But after seeing what a douche Bisping has been, it was hard for me to get too upset about it. And I used to like Bisping until I saw what a jerk he was as a coach on TUF.
  22. Oops, my bad. I should have read it more closely. I saw the word hearing and just assumed that people could be heard.
  23. Oh there was no count. He was completely out cold before he even hit the mat. The ref ran in as fast as he could, but not before Henderson nailed him once on the canvas for good measure. He was out cold for about 2 full minutes.
