I have been keeping my eye open for a .357 or .38 revolver for a while. Not a rush, but I like them. My Dad has a Smith .45 Model 1917 that I grew up around. So preference was on a Smith or a Colt. Finally found a guy who said he had a Smith & Wesson Model 10 to trade. Met him and traded. From my research this did not look like a Model 10, but looked good anyway. Got home and started digging. Looks like I am the new owner of a Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police square butt model from the early- to mid-1920s (probably 1924/25). All the Serial numbers match, but the grips are not original. Apparently they are from the '30's and are even rarer than the ones that are supposed to be on it. I had a guy at the Smith forum immediately offer to swap me the correct ones and "a dollar or two extra." I politely declined. All in all I think I got the better end of the deal. I think he thought he just had some old revolver to get rid of. Went and shot it yesterday just out in a field and everything ran smooth. Gave her a good cleaning last night. Gonna test accuracy at the range next time. Also, looking for a nice leather holster for her to live in. The generic Uncle Mikes he gave me with it does not do this gun justice. Just wanted to share my excitement. Rarely do I get this lucky.

No way could I do that. I can safely say he is more man than me.

As a newbie, I just did not know how many people post what they got here. I have not gotten mine, but we still have a few days 'til Christmas

I figure that live pineapple grenade I picked up at a yard sale pretty much covers all terrain. lol

Nothing better than an old gun. This looks like a great project. I love to see these old rifles that families used as a daily tool brought back to life.

That's nice work. No snap to worry about opening, rusting or scratching the knife. I have done a little, but I have more projects than time. I have an Old Hickory butcher knife I am planning on making one for soon.

After me saying mine was great, I had to work on it the other night. lol. Nothing big, just carrying it in my pocket is rough on the switch.

I saw The Axis on sale in .308 for $329. It would make a good option too. The American line is just a little more than that. I agree on the high point. I have shot one and it was nice except the 10 round mag. My son actually took his first deer with one this year.

Take in is one thing. Rehome is the hard part. I know some no kill, but they do not have a lot of foster families, so the chances are slim. Plus I am too far away.

I agree, that is why I am looking for a 9mm pistol instead of a 45 myself. .40 is on the fence right now. When all the police used them, it was all over the place. Now most use 9mm. that is the downside of the Mosin and SKS. The ammo locally is much slimmer supply. Throw out price and the KRISS Vector in 9mm would be a great one. Of course at $1500, none of us is filling a safe full of them.

So do you usually find anything good there?

Well if you ended up setting up a camp after things fell apart, short of it being a zombie uprising, I figure other people would be your biggest issue. While I agree on a one on one comparison of Ar and Mosin, if you had a number of trusted people, it is better to have them all armed I think. And if I was really planning for this, I would not want to leave that to chance. Like money, having it makes getting more of it easy.

I hear these stories all the time. For me it is like finding bigfoot. No matter how hard I look, I never even come close.

So how much are you getting AKs for? I would have classed them in the price range of ARs. I left out shotguns, I love them, but the limited range of a normal cheap one presents problems. Mosin, Mauser, and SKS are good options. Just have to buy them up slowly one by one off the secondary market. Though I do think Cabela's has the "Mosin-Nagant Model 91/30 Rifle" on their site for $249. Anyway no right answer, this is a what-if anyway. Anyone else got $0.02 on it. By the way before anyone thinks I am creating an armory. I thought this up after seeing an Armslist ad that said this: "Looking to buy rifles, semi auto or bolt action,or pistols, especially revolvers, in 22Lr, will also look at 22Mag/17HMR, maybe others just tell me what you got I'll take a look at anything. No specific brands or models, just has to be in good shape and functions fine. " Just seemed odd to me.

Yeah way more than I use mine. If I REALLY need a flashlight, I have a 4D cell Maglite.

Guys and Gals, Just as a conversation starter, lets say you are preparing for whatever apocalypse you think might happen. You decide that the best bet is to stock up rifles that you can arm the people you form a group with. ( I know giving guns to strangers, bad idea, just go along with it) Budgets are really tight, but you want the best bang for your buck (pun intended). Let's take ARs off the table too. Even cheap ones are above the price range I am thinking of. And you do not already have a closet of assorted rifles to hand out. It needs to be low cost, preferably not single shot, readily available in quantity, and reliable. I am thinking center-fire only too. 22s are nice, but not much of a battle rifle. So what rifle would you stock up on?
