+1 on both the M&P and the DM Bullard holster. I've got the M&P 9 in full size and a Dual Carry for it. I think DM Bullard is the best kept secret in leather holsters. Good quality.

If you take intended use out of the equation and I had to choose between a 5" and a 4" (4.25", whatever) - I'd go with the 5" (IMO). A lower priced 5" from RIA is a good entry point into the format.
