Ok, You shamed me into taking some measurements. I sure am not going to pull the model 12 apart to measure the spring. I really don't think the length is critical. I would put it in behind the shell follower and try it. May be that 40 inch is ok. Length of tubular magazine is about 17 inches overall with about 16.5 inches to the locking slide. I measure 6 x 2 1/2 inch shells and get somewhere close to right at 15 inches, just what the math says. When the six shells are in the tubular magazine there is no more room for compression of the spring and follower. So your spring and shell follower are going to have to about 1 1/2 inches compression. If I were doing it, I would try the spring full length and start inserting shells. If the sixth shell did not clear the entrance easily I would pull the spring and remove a coil or two and try again until it worked. Another way to get a measurement would be find a way to compress the spring. Measure it and the follower and figure it from there. This was done on my 1927 vintage model 12 Winchester. Good luck. Again, I do not think it is a critical dimension and I can foresee no problems. oldogy

So where does the guy with the truck take the load? Are all local collection places receptive to this or does the State mandate the locals take this stuff that is collected during these volunteer efforts? I've done this type volunteer clean up in a national forest where we hauled truck and trailer loads out. The forest service coordinated to provide huge dumpsters for the disposal. We picked up everything from stoves, couches, toilets, you name it. oldogy

Good luck on this. oldogy

The DW and I built a house many years ago. The plans were a joint effort of the DW and me but mostly her ideas. We hired a general contractor, husband of a woman my wife taught with. We controlled expenditures, paid subs, paid pre agreed upon draws. The job came off very well and just under budget but slightly longer than contracted for. Unfortunately the GC discovered during our job that he had cancer and was dead thereof within a year. One prince of a guy. The second build was actually a remodel and addition but we doubled the size of the original footprint. Again, the wife's plans. I hired a GC, one of the few times I have been taken in by a bull sh ter. He got into me about a thousand dollars before I fired him and took over the job myself. I had trouble with the subs on this job. Guy who was running the carpenter crew was a druggie and spent a couple weeks in jail when he was to be running the crew:death: The carpenter crew cut a section of old roof back right before a rain storm and would not cover it because it was five o'clock. :screwy:I had to do it myself. We got that job done but way under budget because I did some of the work myself, including installing the steel roof. Block crew did not follow plans exactly and I made them tear half a wall down and redo it. Electrical, plumbing, HAV went well. Had trouble finding a good drywall man but eventually did. I am convinced I was known by a few as a SOB on that job but I got it done, turned out well. Talk to your friends who have done it and make notes. Control the money yourself. Pay ONLY as agreed by contract. Do it. Good luck, oldogy

Y'all boys lock up all the TP. I'll get the corn cob futures market. We'll all clean up. oldogy

You hit it right on. One well intended step taken by a squeaky clean law abiding citizen can make that person a criminal. Way too many unnecessary laws on the books. oldogy

Still a darn good place to live. I'll take the high sales tax over income tax any day. IMO, the only time it really hurts is when you buy a large item. Yeah, food tax does hurt the poor. oldogy

For long term preservation of wealth gold may prove to be a good investment. But in the event of a SHTF situation the gold is not going to be worth much for buying your daily survival needs. You need something that others need at the time, like food, ammunition. Hard to predict. My opinion only. oldogy

There are a couple doe that frequent our place that do still have fawns hanging around with them. The fawns are not small, large enough, mature enough to fend for themselves. And it happened so quickly I did not even have time to get the camera although it was within arms length, right next to the sidearm. oldogy

I was just now sitting at the computer for my mid morning session on TGO when the dog goes ballistic, barking at the front window. I quickly turned to see a mature doe chasing what appeared to be a 'yote or coydog through the open space around our house that we call yard and down into the open woods along our private roadway. By the time I realized what I was seeing they were heading away from me quickly. The 'yote would turn and the deer would follow, definitely a chase situation. Now I know a doe will defend a fawn but I just do not think there are any small fawns around here in east TN the middle of Oct. So has anyone else seen a deer chase a 'yote? I know I was not dreaming, I have had noting to drink, and I don't do drugs. oldogy

He will be much better eating than one of those big ol' bucks with moss growing all over him. The best venison I ever ate was from a four point that field dressed at about 100 lbs. oldogy

If the trigger is that important to you, you'll probably not like the PF9. Other than trigger, I like mine just fine. It is not a range gun. I figure if and when I were ever unfortunate enough to really have to use the gun as a tool the trigger would be the last thing I was worried about. oldogy

Stupid as the law may sound, go FFL to FFL. My guess is you have no idea who you are dealing with. oldogy

I you are stopped out of state......
oldogy replied to DUXBUSTER's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Yep, the laws, they are certainly convoluted, the games go on and the possibilities are many. For example, if you are the only occupant of the vehicle would this rule apply? The wife and I are both permit holders and would the rule apply? And if the wife had her firearm in her purse would the rule apply. Guess I need to educate myself on OH laws a bit more. oldogy -
I you are stopped out of state......
oldogy replied to DUXBUSTER's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I spend a lot of time in OH which is a must tell state. I have not been stopped in over 40 years so I would think my chances of being stopped are pretty slim. I have made up my mind that whereever I would be stopped I would be upfront with the fact that I was legally carrying. I would think most LEOs would appreciate knowing but then again I may get someone on a power trip. oldogy -
So I go to the La Vergne PD...
oldogy replied to E4 No More's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
But you are a known face in each of these places. I used to enter restricted areas freely too, where others walking in would have had alarms going off all over the place. It does help to be known and to be needed. I would guess that they are glad to see you. If someone does not want me carrying I won't carry in their place, that simple. oldogy -
Quite true, it was common advice many years ago. And I, being an old guy have heard it, back when forensics were quite primitive, unlike they are today. Back when the country was not so afraid of itself. Back when it was not so liberal. Back when we wanted to get the BGs off the street and not have to spend a fortune prosecuting and defending them. A whole lot cheaper for the taxpayer and easier on the LEOs. Good guys were good guys, bad guys were bad guys and the cops and PAs supported the good guys.. oldogy

Makes you wonder just how knowledgeable they are on this and other laws. I would have no problem pointing their problem of incorrect posting to them, in a respectful way of course. I would make certain I was speaking with seasoned LEO, someone other than a rookie or clerk when I pointed out their error. Naaaaaa, I would not carry in there. oldogy -
Sen. Alexander votes against guns in national parks
oldogy replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Yogiman, welcome to the forum and even though this thread is five months old. The voices of we older members need to be heard as we have seen this crap coming for some time. IMO, you are writing the truth. Keep posting. Alexander is a turncoat, that is certain. I sometimes wonder how he makes his decisions. He must flip a coin since many of them are unexplainable. But, we could do much worse. gota go. oldogy
