I now make sure that my phone camera is set to silent when I must go into Walmart. I never know when I might need to snap a few pics. I still laugh about the Walmart Bingo thread that was on here some time back.

I was a flight instructor before I turned 21. I remember when I could teach people to fly an airplane and sign them off, but I couldn't rent a car. There are a lot of competent 20 year olds out there, and the military is full of them. It's just an insurance thing...

They show the weapons at the end of the video. AK-47 and AR-15.

Backyard Shooting? (Shelby County Area)
Wingshooter replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Wow HoneyBaer, I hope it all works out to your favor. As far as the backyard range... Living in a neighborhood is really getting old for me. BB's are illegal?? I just hope they sink into backyard grass/dirt quickly!!! Other than that, I have a pretty cool archery range set up with 3D targets and a hay bail. In front of the hay bail, I tie 3" helium balloons to the ground. They are really fun to shoot when the wind is blowing (pop!), but severing the string is the ultimate challenge (fly away balloon... be free) Are arrows illegal in the backyard, too. Wait.... don't tell me. -
Guns, flying and hunting... the perfect sport! Has anyone on here ever shot a hog with .223? Is that adequate for those critters in a normal hunting situation? I've always carries 30cal or better for them... maybe that's because I'm always on the ground with them and their tusks.

I get the best pattern out of my 870 with #2. Sometimes I will use B or BB if the geese are flying, but I usually load up with #2. If I am getting shots at mostly passing birds, I will use a IM or Full choke and Hevi-Shot to increase my range. If you use a full choke and steel, just remember to get a full choke made for use with steel shot. If they are decoying, I will use a modified or IC choke. I prefer Hevi-Shot to steel, but I often use the Winchester Drylok steel from Walmart just because of the price. Steel shot even in 3.5" has disappointed me more than once on geese even at closer ranges. Although it's pricier, I recommend the Hevi-Shot over steel.

My first experience with Coal Creek Armory
Wingshooter replied to Wingshooter's topic in General Chat
It sounds like my experience with them is typical. I would have made the drive if I knew they had what I was looking for, but I didn't want to just go up there and browse around. From what I am reading, I don't think I missed anything by not going to CCA... -
My first experience with Coal Creek Armory
Wingshooter replied to Wingshooter's topic in General Chat
I have always had good experiences at Benton's as well. I have purchased archery and hunting gear there before. For some reason I haven't been out there in a while. They are not really that far, and they have a sizable firearms department, too. Thanks for the reminder about them. -
I understand that retail businesses are extremely busy the day after Christmas, but if you don't have time to help a customer... don't answer the freakin' phone. They are about 1.5 hours drive from my house, and there are other gun shops the opposite direction from me. I plan to buy a few hundred dollars worth of AR parts today if I can find what I am looking for. The only thing CCA could tell me was they are too busy, and I would just have to come look for myself. I kindly explained that I was 1.5 hours drive. I simply asked if they had a particular AR15 upper before I made the drive.... "You'll just have to come see", she says. I'll order from somewhere else on the internet before I go to CCA without knowing if I will even find what I am looking for. I was nice to that lady, and she was rude. Where's the Christmas spirit? Again, I understand that a business has to help the customers (cash) in the store first, but I was willing to hold. Oh well, it's not a big deal... just my first impression of CCA.

Don't Carry One in The Chamber, Eh?
Wingshooter replied to Oh Shoot's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
That was traggic. The BG's had the element of surprise, and that one added step of chambering a round could make the difference. I always carry with one ready to go. -
That is cool looking. I couldn't find anything with a search. Well... not a Peterbilt, but I stumbled onto this.....

TN getting a jump on obamacare thanks to our State Reps.
Wingshooter replied to seez52's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
If (when?) it passes, I hope it remains stirred until November. I think these "yes voters" are hoping it will be forgotten come election day. IMHO, that's why they want to rush it through before the end of the year... that way it will be old news to the sheeple at the polls. -

interesting... -
That's a good point. If a BG is engaging you while hiding behind an outside corner of your hallway or behind some furniture, you may want that extra penetration to end the attack.

When I think about birdshot in a HD shotgun, I guess I am thinking about bigger birds such as turkeys, geese, etc... I am comfortable with anything larger than #4 lead or Hevi-Shot type ammo for close range defense in my home. Sometimes I have larger shot sizes loaded for HD, but never smaller than #4 lead. I also use my HD shotgun for duck hunting, so my HD and hunting shells get loaded/unloaded quite a bit. I just have to make sure that I leave the lead at home when I take it duck hunting. On the subject of wall penetration... No matter what weapon or ammo is used, I think it is important to expect it to penetrate the wall. The concern is different for different households. Someone living in an apartment with other families on the other side of 3 walls will have a different perspective than someone in a single-family home with no children in the house. The rule still applies... know the background. However, in an apartment or multi-family home, that may not always be possible. I can understand why someone in this situation would want a potentially lethal round at close range that has a reduced chance of visiting the neighbors on the other side of the wall.

I probably won't be after the yotes specifically until after the deer and duck seasons close next month (too many animals to hunt... too little time:)) Looking forward to hunting coyotes, though...

My dad had a friend years ago that nearly died from a hunting accident involving bird shot from a .410 through a thick winter hunting coat. A tight group of birdshot at close range makes a big hole and will penetrate clothing. I am on the fence about what I want to keep in my HD shotgun. Even if I have it loaded with birdshot, I would treat it as if it would penetrate into the next room anyway. Bird or Buckshot, I think a well-placed shot at close range will stop a threat.

In your vehicle, but the chamber must be empty. The mag can be loaded.

Here is a good video by Rob Pincus about wall penetration with 9mm, .45, .223 and 12ga. It's been posted before, but it's a good vid. THE BEST DEFENSE - on the Outdoor Channel

I've never shot my AR because I am still building it, but I enjoy long-range shooting. My 1903 has "stretched it's legs" on long range deer in other states several times. I know my shooting skills are there, so I trust that I will be able to find out how far I can be accurate with an AR. I guess I was asking more about the ballistics of the .223 at 300yds+

So, about 300 yards should be considered the maximum effective range of the .223 to ethically take a coyote (assuming good shot placement of course)? Does the bullet retain sutable energy at that distance?
