  1. This has probably been discussed at length previously, but I couldn't find it. I have been looking at new rifles lately, and irons almost seem to be a thing of the past. All of my bolt rifles have been purchased used, and they all have iron sights. Maybe I am just old school, but if I can't shoot the gun without a scope, then I fell like I am getting ripped off. Don't get me wrong, I like using a scope, but I can mount a scope on a gun with irons just fine. I am planning a hunt out West next year, and I want a .300 Win Mag bolt gun... [hold your breath] ...with iron sights. It is difficult to even find that setup online anymore. If I bust up my scope in the mountains on a multi-day hunt/camping trip, I still want to be able to shoot the gun. If this was going to be a gun to hunt with locally, then it wouldn't be a big deal I guess. Maybe it's just a cost of production thing, but my choices in rifles have been dramatically reduced. I have shot more deer and other game with irons than I have with a scope, and I won't buy this 300 without them. Am I the only one that sees the value of the iron sight, or am I just living in the past???
  2. The iphone and droid are both great phones for the uses you have listed. That said, I have a Droid and have never thought twice about an iphone. The big negative for me with the iphone is the requirement to use itunes. You have to get ALL of your apps through itunes. If you are already an itunes user, then this might be great. I prefer the Droid where an itunes account is not required and most apps are FREE. I can't speak for the gps on the iphone, but the gps on my DroidX2 is spot on. I got a little turned around after tracking a deer at night (shot just before dark) last winter, and my Droid brought me right back to my truck. Also has voice turn-by-turn navigation when ur driving (iphone prolly does too) The only negative thing I have to say about the droid is my battery life is not the greatest if I am using it heavily. I carry an extra charged battery if I know I will not have access to a charger for an extended period of time (camping, etc.). Being able to swap the battery is actually a plus for the droid for me since I don't think the batt can be changed in an iphone.
  3. There is a lot of food assistance available (church, friends, local organizations, government, etc.) to people that are really starving and have no food. If someone is working and still does not have money to eat, then some priorities need to be adjusted. If someone is without a job and does not have food, there are lots of jobs out there that pay enough to feed one's belly. Hunger should not be an excuse to break the law. Now, if your lost out in the wilderness like SurvivorMan, then by all means hunt for food. That's my take on it.
  4. Wow, 11 pages and counting... I saw the video from the OP on the news last night. Made me think of this thread lol
  5. Pancakes or bacon?
  6. No problem jReed. I don't wish any harm to anyone on the road no matter what the mode of transportation. BTW, the video was pretty funny, but not because it involved a cyclist. I just think it's funny when wild animals collide with humans.
  7. That's a caution sign!!! Did you watch the video in the OP? That deer or African antelope animal practically jumped on that biker's back. Seemed to be an appropriate sign where the deer crossing met the bike crossing (deer on a bike... ). The pic I posted has nothing to do with shooting anything, unless your the guy that thinks your suppose to shoot at deer crossing signs.
  8. I must have missed the part about shooting at cyclists.
  9. I don't think it's always that black and white. When I come up on a cyclist on a road with a higher speed limit (55 mph), I don't care to slow down or pass with plenty of room. If I am the only vehicle involved or if there is plenty of visibility, then it is a non-issue. There are times when you crest the top of a hill (or a curve) going 55 and have to brake for a bike. My concern at that point is the crazy driver behind me going 65 that is about to rear end me or have a head-on with oncoming traffic. In that case, I will pass ASAP to get that situation behind me.
  10. Actually, I think we're on to something. Drivers are not trying to run cyclists off the road, they just have their eyes covered at the sight of a grown man in spandex.
  11. I have listened to Cain from time to time on talk radio over the last two years. He has stayed pretty consistant. He doesn't have a voting record (that I know of), so he has the advantage of being able to say what he believes without much scrutany. I have always found myself agreeing with most of his positions. I mainly hear him talking about economy and domestic issues, so I wonder how strong he would be on defense and international issues. I'll be watching the debate tonight.
  12. I have no animosity towards a cyclist that is being safe and "sharing the road", but doing 20mph in the middle of a road with a 55mph limit can be a hazard. I don't believe that it is only the cyclist that is in danger if a car goes to pass and hits a car full of family head on. I remember hearing about that scenario when I was younger. BTW, which "vehicles" have a right to be there and which ones have to be licensed? Are we talking motorized vs non-motorized? I'm just curious if I have a right to drive my ATV, kid's scooter, go-cart, Big Wheel, or just walk down the middle of the street. Not trying to be a smart butt, I'm just not sure if there a minimum speed at which a bike (or anything else without signs and flashers) has to be going if the speed limit is 55mph? I guess I have a right to do it, but I sure don't want to be dead-right. I will ride in a residential area without hesitation, but out on the roads I stay out of the way.
  13. I made it through 20 mins then fell asleep. I'll watch it again, but I was disappointed with the little bit I saw.
  14. I have no problem with cyclists that are courteous and don't expect the world to stop for them. It's the ones that ride in the middle of the lane at 5 mph with 18 cars in tow behind them that creates a danger for everyone. I don't want to hit anyone, so I always TRY to give a wide margin. If the cyclist is hogging the road though, it often forces the autos into oncoming traffic. Personally, if I ever have to ride a bike on a roadway, I keep to the shoulder.
  15. Mmm... squirrel on the skewer
  16. Yeah, that cold weather might send some ducks our way. My biggest problem with duck hunting is I usually wait until the last minute every year to start practicing my calls. I need to be on them right now, so I don't sound like a "wounded duck" when the season rolls around.
  17. Mmmm... me too. I have a small single-burner stove that cooks up some yummy bacon and eggs before the sun comes up. I love duck hunting. I just wish there were more ducks in East TN. I usually shift my focus from deer to ducks after Christmas.
  18. Add a knife sharpener, lighter and a bottle of water and you pretty much described the essentials of my pack.
  19. I read that Suntrust (my bank) will charge a flat $5/month. *Edit: I was too slow for JimmyMac. Beat me to it.
  20. I have helped my grandfather butcher deer before, but I have always taken my own deer to a processor. I want to do it myself starting this year. I don't remember everything my grandfather did, but I remember enough to get some steaks and backstraps. I need to watch a video myself
  21. I have been hesitant to try it this early in the season since the does and fawns are hitting the area about every day, and they are undisturbed. I might try the fawn distress and see what happens. I have some traps, but I would enjoy hunting the coyotes instead.
  22. I have never hunted predators, but I want (need) to. I keep getting pics of a couple of coyotes on the same trail camera that gives me a lot of fawn pics. I want to take these yotes out, but will the calls disturb the deer activity? I wish I would have hunted them before deer season.
