  1. I know this thread is about a year old, but I am about to start studying for the Tech, and I found this thread to be informative. I would like to take the test mid September. Besides a fun and useful hobby, I would like to have a means of communicating with my brother in Florida should the traditional methods fail. He is getting started in it too, so it's a learning experience for both of us. I want a moble unit in my truck that I can also use as a base unit if desired. I have been looking at the Yaesu FT-857D and the FT-7900R. Just wondering if the HF and increased wattage of the FT-857D are really worth the extra $$. I assume I will need to go further than Tech to use HF. Do I understand it right that with VHF/UHF I will need repeaters to reach Florida and HF can do it without repeaters under the right conditions?
  2. I think a nice bright light is very important. I recently bought a light for my wife too. It was a knockoff brand but it works. I carry a Fenix TK15 just about everywhere and am very happy with it. I plan to get a second one for her.
  3. I listened to the audio book about a year ago. I still think about it a lot when stocking up on stuff. Good read
  4. After reading this thread, I saw this one...
  5. A gun with 3 ten-round mags is no different than one with a 30-round mag. I respect your opinion, but I believe the argument is if the high capacity mags/weapons are banned, only the honest person is penalized. Criminals will still get them, and lunatics will still kill no matter what is legal/illegal. The only difference is that the law-abiding citizen will be out-gunned by the criminal who is willing to buy guns on the black market. In this latest example, if the guy in the theater did not have an AR, he would have used a __________ (fill in the blank... bomb, fire, another shotgun, five Glocks, chainsaw, F350, etc.). People intent on breaking the law will find a way. The 30-round magazine didn't kill anyone... the guy's 70+ pulls of the trigger finger did that, and it doesn't really matter what kind of trigger he was pulling.
  6. I'm guessing the Ban Hammer is capable of striking in the same place twice.
  7. Where is the popcorn emodicon on Tapatalk? Edit: found it Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk 2
  8. If Hussein stays in power after the election, this issue will surely come to life again.
  9. The communication from RRA is what was missing. Living in the Information Age, it is easy to communicate with a customer that orders a product online. A few weeks ago, I ordered some AR parts (black). The next day, the company emailed me saying that the black color was backordered. I could (1) get a refund (2) wait for who knows how long to get the black parts, or (3) choose another color. I appreciated the communication and selected another color (tan). RRA should have communicated the difference in the bolt and offered a choice instead of just saying 'here it is... deal with it.' especially after you wait for so long and pay shipping / transfer fees. BTW, nice rifles. Another bolt is never a bad thing to have around, and you could always drop a chrome one in there if it bugs ya. I don't think it's right, but I would probably just enjoy the rifles at this point. Thanks for the warning, I will not order from there.
  10. A few more Chick-fil-A appreciation days like yesterday and they will need to hire more workers that will get paid resulting in more stimulation to the economy.

  14. Kahr CW40 maybe?
  15. Oh man, the Christian bookstores would be in trouble.
  16. For the same money, I would look at a Savage-Stevens. The action of the 770 feels sloppy and cheap to me. The Stevens is also a good platform to upgrade later on down the road.
  17. maybe a desiccant pack might help for a while. Don't forget where you bury it. It's not often you get a valid reson to draw an actual 'treasure map'. Good thread.
  18. A kiss-In... How gay, lol. Yeah, that'll show him! Liberals....
  19. Friends of mine in Maryland said the one they visited ran out of food.

  22. I happily waited nearly an hour at lunch time. I was planning on stopping for mor chikin this evening, but the line looked longer at Cleveland's C-F-A than it did at lunch! I didn't have time to stop again this evening, but I wanted to.
