Been watchin this a bit. I think there are two crimes here. The first is the kid that wuz doin 80+ at 3:30 in the mornin on a state highway that was, in fact, actually endangering innocent drivers. Therefore he was, in fact, committing a crime. The second is that the parents of this unfortunate young person dont seem to see their child committing this crime this as a problem and are seeking to punish someone for "not giving sufficient aid" or "somehow caring enough". I would be a bit more disposed to sympathy here if there were actually some adults and some adult thinking here. I can understand the grieving parent thing; i cant understand or accept the thinking that somehow the kid who killed himself and endangered a bunch of innocent people in the process is somehow exonerated and made an innocent as the result of runnin into a tree while drivin too fast, while folks who are actually sworn to uphold the law are being vilified. I will grant that we can quibble a bit about "the giving of adequate aid", but not the role of LE in this situation. I'm amazed at the overlooking off the "real crime" here and the focusing on the actions of LE. We are nothin but a bunch of armchair quarterbacks when we start opinin on how much aid is enough; we werent there. Only a dammed bunch of tort lawyers with no conscience and a bunch of grief filled parents who have denied their kids faults and wrongdoing could come up this sad story. It's the world turned upside down, man. Denying the truth is a dangerous thing. It turns traditionally "right actions" into "wrong actions" and endangers us all. leroy

Folks, this is political grandstanding by a homosexual activist pure and simple. Ya may not like Campfield, and i can understand that; but the idea that he somehow "offends" some powerful elite clientele that the bistro has is laughable. Robert and DaddyO are exactly right. Downtown knoxville is on life support for the most part because of the discussion that is going on now. It's populated in large part by wierdos, winos, and vagarants; along with a more upscale assortment of "city dwellers" of various stripes. The greatest downtown landmark in Knoxville was the Regas Restaurant. It's gone now because of a combination (...in my opinion, anyway...) of the slow death of downtown due to vagarants, weirdos from the "old city", and general urban decay because the buildings that once housed viable businesses are empty and fallin down. The truth is that Knoxville has been in decline for over 50 or so years now. People with families and kids who are in the least familiar with this area are goin to avoid it like the plague; especially after dark; unless there is some civic function goin on, and they seem to be getting fewer and fewer in number. Goin down the hill away from the bistro toward the river, there is Calhouns, Ruth Cris Steakhouse, and the UT campus; is a bit better and it may survive. It is disconnected from the uptown area along Gay Street. Ya cant walk from the bistro down the hill very easily because of the street layout and the general lay of the land; so most folks commute into that area. The Womens Basketball Hall of Fame is in receivership; it is right next to the Ruth Cris Steakhouse on the river. The bistro area is alive (...barely, i think...) only because of the close proximity to the knoxville court house, a couple of large office buildings, and the occasional nite time venue at the Bijou Theatre next door. My guess is that the bulk of the dollars for operating these places is coming from some sort of small business or urban rehabilitation grant dollars scheme. I simply cant believe they are completely paying their way; much less making any dollars to speak of. There is an interesting battle goin on in the downtown of Knoxville (...again, in my opinion...) between the various stripes of political outliers (...take a look at the knoxville city council; for the most part, it looks like the star wars bar scene -- read the bios of some of these clowns...), the University of Tennessee, the real estate developers (...uptown building renovation into condos for some old buildings...), and the weirdo business developers (...beanerys and bars....) that haunt the "Old City". They have evidently fought to a standstill, possibly because of the poor economy; but in large part because of who they are in general. To top things off, we have a new mayor who is an ex-community activist, a urban planner, and a republican to boot (...which i think is hilarious...). The good news is that the mayor appears to be the hand picked servant of our governor; and as such, can be depended on to do what she is told. At least there is a bit of adult supervision there. The downtown knoxville business coalition wants desparately to make the downtown of knoxville more attractive and very similar to the chattanooga downtown area down toward the river; but they cant do it because of who they are, the general topography north of the river, and because they have no money to speak of. Not to mention that knoxville is off the beaten path so to speak. Its simply on the way to the smokies and the home of the UT football stadium. There is no real reason to be "in knoxville"; there are plenty of reasons to 'pass thru". The UT area helps a bit because of the "captive audience" thing, but the campus is eight or ten blocks away from the bistro area (...thankfully....). The only thing that is keeping downtown knoxville alive today in the bistro area (...again, in my opinion...) is the uptown office business, the court house, and UT. Since the uptown is no longer prosperous, it has been handed over to the likes of the proprieter of the bistro; who it appears would rather make a futile political statement than harvest the dollars of a political enemy. I find that all very amusing; ----I say: "....keep up the good work and you'll finally finsh off the whole uptown area....". It's time to end this little epistle, but im still like Robert and DaddyO; i believe that the propritoress of the bistro would do well to stick with running a restaurant and watering hole for a captive audience, and stay out of the business of makin political statements. For ever wierdo that haunts the uptown scene, there are probably 8 to 10 folks who like campfield and dont like the idea of knoxville being known as a leader in the fight for homosexual and AIDs awareness; and they all will vote for campfield again. I think it's great. Stacey should have known better. Looks like another case of poor situational awareness and poorer judgement on ole Stacey's part. It adds some credence to the theory that polititians may be the "dimmest among us". I "self banned" myself from the bistro (...at nite, at least....), along with some friends of ours probably 25 or so years ago one saturday nite about 9 or so pm. We were looking for a "quaint" place to have a quiet drink before something were goin to downtown. We decided on the bisro and tootled on in. The hostess was quite nice and seated us, but things just didnt seem right to me. Once we were were seated i realized what the deal was. It was confirmed (...terribly, to me at least...) when i looked around and noticed that none of the five or six men at the bar were admiring the old time 1880's era life sized painting of a winsome, delightful reclining nude that graced the wall for about 5 or 6 feet long behind the bar. The men were all moon gazing eachother. When our sever arrived at our table and took our drink order; i ordered some pickeled pig knuckles, some pickeled eggs, and a mug of ale. He was appoplexic --- he sputtered that they "had no such items" as appetizers. I chastized him a bit, and opined that some schooling was in order for those who did the ordering of supplies at the bistro. He dissappeared to round up our drinks and evidently pointed us out as potential troublemakers to the management. Quick as a flash, the manager (...a woman...) brought our drinks, gave me a stern look, and asked if everything was alright. I opined and groused a bit about the lack of "bar staples", but let her know that the beer was ok. She looked flustered and left; whereupon the wife chastized me (...quietly, of course....) and we shortly left (...after i finished my beer, all at a leisurely pace....). I wuz the only one in our party who noticed the clientle; which i had a big time describing to our friends who finally put two and two together. All in all, it was a great nite and a great experience. What is really funny about the Campfield thing is the layout of his district. Take a look at it on the district maps. It runs basically from the tennessee river bridge downtown near the bistro, thru the UT campus, out kingston pike to deep west. There is no way the "downtown yahoos" can override the west knoxville family type folks. Looks like another cruel joke by the mean republicans to me. HEHEHE. Remember, real bistos have pickeled pig knuckles and pickeld eggs on the bar!! The faux ones dont know what they are, and the "men" dont appreciate the female form!! bigpa:_____________ We used to shoot 223 boltguns with 1 in 12 twists when the best 22 caliber bullets 52 to 55 grain. They would shoot like a house a fire; usually you could lay a dime over a 5 shot group from 100 yards from a good solid bench with a 12 or so power scope. I would try the 62 grain bullets (...just as Dave said above....); as a 62 grain bullet aint that much heavier, and a 1to 10 twist is just a bit faster than the ole 1 in 12 and a bit slower that the "optimum" 1 in 9 that lots of the ar guys use (...includin me...). My guess is that you will get good results because the Sig guys are engineers as well as manufacturers and have probably looked at this pretty hard. There is a definite relation between velocity, diameter, bullet length (....diameter and bullet length determine bullet weight to a large extent....) and twist rate. I would suspect that the Sig guys have looked into all this and everything should be cool. Ya may have to play around a bit to find the "just right' load for your rifle, but that's part of the fun of shootin. Have fun and let us know how this turns out. leroy

I agree. We used to use it "back in the day" to bed our bolt rifles. It's good to work with. There's a 300 win mag 40x single shot bolt gun in our gun safe that was bedded with devcon and it's shot hundreds if not a few thousand rounds. It's still solid as a rock and very accurate. leroy

Nik:____ If we chose to go to one or two shows a year; the first one would be the semiannual gunshow in Birmingham. It is huge and it has everything. I would watch the gunshow listings to see when the dates are; as i think it's a semi-annual show. We would go to the spring show which is in March (...i think...). We are from east tennessee and you could put six or our usual Knoxville or Kingsport RK show layouts in the Birmingham show. It is held in the downtown convention center. You have individuals and dealers from florida to kentucky west to texas. It is a great show. We went down to find old shotguns one year and came back with two; a us marked model 97 riot and a side hammer 1983 (...or 1887...) Remington hammer double. The whole gamut is there from shotguns, to colt single actions, to smiths, to rugers; and everything else in between. It is well worth the trip. As to the others, i really like the local shows in the national guard armories and smaller venues put on by the local gun collecting and shooting guys. Ya get lots of individual sellers who sometimes want to sell some pretty neat stuff. Watch for the smaller shows which are in a reasonable driving distance of your place. david: Ya make a great point here. I've wondered this myself. If ya take the time to read how the Israelis do it; it's completely different from our system. The Israeli's are masters of this stuff. They live with real threats every day. Our gubment has created an ineffective, bloated bureauracy that is destined to fail because it is operated by "politically correct" rules. My take is that it is lots safer to pat down well known polititians, babies, and old ladies than it is mullahs and young middle eastern men. The cryin shame of all this is that both parties went along with this heinous and idiotic scheme under the guise of "making us all safer". I say "baloney". leroy

I always wanted a pair myself; but was too stingy to fork over the cash for them. I cant wait to hear "progress reports" once ya break em in. I think they are probably the best forestry, logging type boots out there. As close as i ever came to them were Red Wing lineman's boots. They were heavy, but good boots. JAB, your point in the first paragraph of post #23 is well founded and i aint tryin to beat ya up. There is, indeed, a sympathy felt for this poor woman, as well as others thoroughout history, like the Kennedys. Arizona is a hotly contested state; and that was the point i was makin. There was no intent to "rebuff" but, instead, to put forth a political proposition, just as you have done. Arizona has some problems that we can begin to imagine. Among them are the problems down on the border where old time ranchers are afraid of getting killed by coyotes and drug runners; the radical La Raza movement that postulates that Kalefornia, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas were "stolen" from the mexican people (...which, by the way, i think we can probably quibble about a bit, but not now...) and should be turned into a soverign mexican state and the "anglos' thrown out; an overload of illegals swallowing up tax dollars and overloading government services such as schools, etc, on and on. ... Arizona district 8 contains both rural border territory as well as metro areas. That always makes for an interesting mix on politics. Additionally, i believe that political control of Arizona is being hotly contested between the Nobama administration on the one hand and the republicans on the other with governor Jan Brewer. Arizona is, for the most part, a republican state. The nobama administrations goals are on trial in arizona, and it looks pretty much to me like the arizona electorate is siding with Jan Brewer. It's my observation that the Giffords elections (...two terms...) were won based on a combination of Ms. Giffords wonderful persona, her claim to be a "conservative democrat", and a ton of outside the state demorat money. All this was done to beat a homeboy who had no real political machine behind him. I firmly believe that voters are not as stupid as many of us political junkies and career political operatives may think. Americans are kind, but they also have eyes; and i believe that the average voter in Ms. Gifford's district were (...and are...) waking up. Take a look at the votes in the 2006 vs 2010 election in that district and you can see what im sayin. Another thing that is goin on here is that this particular district includes the city of Tuscon and the University of Arizona is very near (...or may be in...) this district. All this stuff came together to give a demorat win in 2006 and 2010, but just barely. RE: The Kennedy thing. I still remember when JFK was shot (...i was 18 years old...) and i remember being at home sick. JFK also had a great clarisma as well as some degree of competence (...quite unlike most of the demorats today...). He was much closer to todays "big government republican" (...think George Bush here...) than he was a democrat; and that seemed to be the norm in those days. He was a reasonably conservative fiscal conservative and was strongly pro american. In all honesty, i do not believe that JFK could be in the demorat party today; he would have to be a republican. Look what they did to Joe Lieberman. I believe JFK's manner, charm, and confidence came together to capture the imagination of the american electorate like no other figure in the 20th century in america. That is why he is so revered today. JFK's coattails and this memory (...both real and imagined...) were big enough to last for over 60 years; and that is, indeed, powerful sfuff. This "JFK" nostalga and aura; the JFK Coattails, if you will; has covered some horrible atrocities. JFK's brothers (...Teddy, RFK...) and his kinsmen that came after him were for the most part reprobate socialist pygmies; but that didnt seem to matter to the new england electorate and to the contry at large. JFK still looms larger than life in the minds of many. Hope this little epistle gives ya a bit of insight both into my little view of politics and political history. leroy

Alexander is the republican equivalent of Albert Gore Senior. He has built a diverse enough base to offend some of us with impunity. I have absolutely no use for alexander other than he is a mean-spirited and ruthless polititian when he sets his mind to it. He is a case-book study in how to defeat, completely disarm, and jail your political opponents. He decimated the old time "blue dog" demorat political machine in tennessee when he won the governorship against Butcher in 1978. He then proceeded to put his political enemies and their contributors in jail if possible. He is, indeed, a hard and unreasonable man when he puts his mind to it. I believe that alexander truly believes that he is, in fact, "...the best and brightest among us..." and, as such, he does not need any input from us "delightful rustics". That's the reason some of us get these condescending e-mails explaining some silly position that he takes from time to time. I just got one about the XL Pipeline that simply regurgitated what the deal was on the pipeline and has some baloney about a 50% reduction in petroleum use from using electric cars to boot. The good news is that you can, in fact, enrage the electorate enough to be thrown out of office. Thats exactly what happened to ole Al Senior. He voted for the infamous gun control act of 1968. He was kicked out although he was a firmly entrenched, powerful, monied, incumbent "new deal demorat" in a "new deal demorat" state. In those days, there were no republicans west of the Tennessee River at loudoun. Alexander is a bunch smarter than ole Al was, but i thoroughly agree with OS's analysis above. Let's hope that old age, infirmity, and the prospect of the grisly reaper work together to remove ole lamar pretty quickly, as he is no spring chicken. My prediction is that we will put up with him for no more than one more term; then his precious child Bill "Snozz" Haslam with ascend the throne. From where i sit, it wont come soon enough. leroy

Thanks Robert. I spent a bunch of time workin for a company that did "random parking lot searches." The company had a list of "prohibited items"; among them guns, drugs, stolen stuff, etc. ..... The real story was that the searches were not random; they were based on suspictions and tips (...or even vendettas, im sure....). Submitting to searches was a "condition of employment", so there was no question as to whether they could do a search or not. I completely forgot about the "military base" thing.
