I learned a long time ago that i wasnt cut out for sales. To be a true salesman, you have to be able to tolerate ridiculous offers (...questions or demands....) from ridiculous people with a smile and a kind reply to even the most ridiculous of comments or demands (...and offers...). I learned i couldnt do that workin in a full service service station when i wuz about 17 or so. Thats been a long time ago. Havin said all that; there (...in relatively rare instances, thankfully...) is some sad and hurtful truths about the character of sellers (...and possibly buyers...) even here on TGO. I've seen some ridiculous asking prices for items, and ive personally experienced some sorry b*****ds doin some selling. I wont name names (...by the way, its none of the posters to this thread...); but ya know who you are. As to the selling thing; I'm ok with ridiculous asking prices; but sellers posting these prices shouldnt be surprized when folks arent interested. As to sorry dealings, i would advise against doin 'em. I once made the mistake if trying to help a seller on this forum by meeting him after his work time; only to have him sell the item that i was interested in. He reminded me that "a deal is a deal" and that he owed me no preferential treatment even though i had tried to accommodate his schedule. That action and attitude is, at best, bad manners; and at worst, is trashy and unethical behavior by human excrement. As ya can see, all this stuff cuts two ways. The bottom line is simply this (...for me, anyway...): List an item for a fair price. Deal fairly. Tell the truth. Do what ya say you will do. I've met some delightful, honest folks on this forum selling various items. I've also been exposed to some sorry excrement as well. It's the full spectrum of the human condition. This forum (...sadly...) is no exception. leroy (...now there's a "real" rant!!!...)

Scalia: Guns May be Regulated
leroy replied to East_TN_Patriot's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Robert has made several good points RE: the job of the courts and the courts role. The three branches of government were never intended to be "equal". There have been tiffs between the court and the executive branch. The one that comes to mind is the "indian removal act" (...the trail of tears...). Check out what Andrew Jackson said here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worcester_v._Georgia .. The bottom line is that the legislature drafts and makes laws (...they can also nullify and change laws; and often do....), the executive branch enforces laws (...sometimes, and ignores them others..Ala Jackson and Nobama....). The supreme court gives opinions on laws. Since we are supposidely a "...nation of laws..."; the thought is that they (...the decisions of the court plus the laws duly passed by congress...) should be enforced when the opinions (...and laws...) are handed down. Sometimes they are not; ala Nobama on border enforcement and defense of marriage. Robert is also right on the issue of Roosevelt "packing the court" and elevating it to a "co-equal" branch of government. It was done for political reasons to advance the socialist agenda her in the good ole USA. There is a reason why the Founding Fathers considered the court the "weakest arm of government.". They were right. Roosevelt simply perverted and "jilflirted" the system to get his way. Remember, in our system, the government derives its power to govern from the consent of the governed. The reason that the politicos wont touch the gun issue today is that most folks believe (...and rightly so...) that the second amendment means what it says, and that citizens have an inherrent right to self defense. Charles Krauthammer masterfully pointed this out the other day in the Fox All-Star panel discussion. leroy -
Scalia: Guns May be Regulated
leroy replied to East_TN_Patriot's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I'm kinda with Photoguy on this one, only i think the "regulation" thing goes back a lot further. It goes to the post civil war "Reconstruction" era. Read the text of tennessee state law for details. One of our scholars here on our very forum pointed this out in several excellent posts several years ago during a discussion of "gun control" laws. Scalia said nothing new and changed nothing. He did sober lots of folks up though. The fact is that there is a pernicious government tendency to regulate behavior of its citizens. The USA is no exception. Remember the speech of the great sheriff in "Oh Brother, Where art Thou" in the hangin scene when Everette protested about being pardoned, saying they shouldnt be hanged. He famously said: "....The law is a human institution..." ... and, as such, is subject to the effects of corrupt characters who use government and bend laws to facilitate personal agendas. Many in government view the citizens as "rabble" to be governed by a "governing elite". You need to understand that the judicial branch of government is the "elite" of the "governing elite". Thats exactly why elections matter. Whoever sits at the top appoints folks like Scalia and Roberts for life. In my view, it matters far more as to who sits in the presidency and legislature. If ya dont have trash like Barak Nobama, Frank Lautenberg, Chuck Schumer, and Michael Bloomberg sitting in elected office; ya dont have the problem of oppressive anti gun laws being put forward to control the "rabble" who might want to defend themselves against nuts and thugs. The real enemy in all this governmental thing aint the judicial branch; its the legislative branch and the big city machine polititians who pass out favors and have, from the beginning of the machine politics era in this country have acted like kings in certain portions of this country (...read that big cities like New York, Chicago, Baltimore, Cleveland, etc....). Take a look at the pronouncements of the great Rahm Emanuel in Chicago and whoever the idiot is who is the current mayor of Boston RE: the chick fila thing and you can see what im sayin. I can tolerate the Scalias and his buddies in the long black robes. I cant tolerate the Nobamas, Shumers, Lautenbergs, and the other trash that wants to make us serfs. The problem aint the supreme court or its appointment and tenure process. It's trash like the afore listed excrement that think you and i are serfs and can be pushed around at the whim and will of a "governing elite". They are, in fact, the enemy and need to be defeated politically. If we dont, the country wil be overrun with this trash and wont be fit to live in. In my opinion, its frighteningly close to that point now. The fact that these clowns have the power they have now should sober everyone up who loves liberty and believes in the founding principles of this country. Remember, there is an election soon. Vote early and often. leroy PS --- By the way, thanks ETP for posting this. It is important. -

leroy replied to Ray Z's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I like both the unique and 2400 loads in the 44 mag. RE: "Dirty burning". Use a heavy crimp and a tight fit in the bullet to case mouth(...flare just enough to start the bullet to seat or use a bevel base bullet...). leroy -
Ill add to the opiners who say it wuz "bubba'd". After havin said that; these are great old revolvers and great shooters. Take it out, get a period correct military holster from El Paso saddlery and enjoy it. They are great shooters. We have two of the smith 1917s. They are a great thing!! leroy

George Zimmerman: Motion to disqualify judge
leroy replied to QuietDan's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Im glad to see that the lawyers are on top of things. As others have said, it may be impossible for George Zimmerman to get a fair trial with this bunch of political "flotsom and jetsom" in authority. Ive believed from the beginning that this whole spectacle was nothing but a political sideshow designed to scare Zimmerman into a plea deal for a crime he didnt commit. This whole Zimmerman trial thing is (...in my opinion...) nothing more than vote buying, race bating, and post civil war reconstruction politics by a bunch of political operatives (...both demorat and rino republican alike...) staged in order to "punish" an innocent (...though evidently unliked guy like Zimmerman...) for defending himself against an 18 year old thug that would have probably killed him in a fists only fight. It is my belief, that this case would have never come to trial if the race roles were reversed. It is the politics of vote buying (...sanford has a 25% black population....) and state legal sytem intimidation; pure and simple. It is also (...in my opinion...) a "pushback" by certain operatives in the state legal enterprise (...both demorat and republican...) against the "stand your ground law" which was duly passed by the florida legislature. Lots of folks in the legal enterprize (...read that judges, prosecuting attorneys, etc...) dont like private citizens taking the mantle of "final adjudicating of crimes" by defending themselves against thugs. That encroaches on their territories. They could care less if you or a loved one are murdered or maimed by a thug; they get paid either way. In short, its politics, race bating, and anti armed citizen bias at its worst in state government. The people of Florida deserve much better than they get from this bunch of carpetbagging misfits in government. leroy -

Sensible behavior cannot be legislated. Such behavior must be modeled to children, along with a healthy dose of teaching. The root of the drug problem is the drug culture. You are simply not believable when you are takin perscription drugs, smokin marajuna, or any of this other stuff, while telling your children that it aint ok to do it. Children have eyes, and see that you are a dammed phoney; and, as such, you are unworthy of respect or belief. After they see that you are saying one thing and doing another; they determine that you are a hippocrite and unworthy of listening to (...much less respect...); and they simply go about their way doing what they want to do. No amount of "checks and imposition of silly rules on society" will fix this problem. We have already proven that as a society. We've been fightin the "war on drugs" for several years to no noticeable effect. There is too much money in it; and way too many "cottage inddustries" that feed on the problem. The cough and cold medicine recording stuff is (...in my opinion...) just another imposition on law abiding folks and a "feel good" trick for a gullible, deceived, and guilt ridden society that takes recreational drug use and alcohol abuse way too lightly. I would love to see just how many real drug cookers and "mister big" drug distributors have been jailed from the use of this info. I come from a family of alcoholics; one of which was a prescription drug abuser and drunkard combined. I well understand this side of the problem. I grew up poor. I well understand the need to make a living (...think cookin meth here...). I also understand that life is full of choices; and that, contrary to popular opinion in some quarters; that ...."You are responsible for you."... . Lots of folks dont like the "...you are responsible for you...." thing. There have been several generations that have been conditioned to believe that "....you are not responsible for you...". That "outside forces" and unnamed, faceless "mean people" cause your problem; and that you are simply a helpless waif, tossed about by these horrible outside forces. I say,...baloney...!! ". You are, in fact, responsible for you, and no amount of aplologizing for bad behevior, shifting of blame to others, denial of reality, or any of these other excuses can suspend that immutable law. As our society drifts further and further down the putrid river toward the sewer of hedonism and anarchy put into its flower by doting parents who are, themselves, devoid of self discipline, self control, and ethics; the easier it gets to get what we have. No amount of "shared sacrifice" of society (....giving a pint of blood and being added to a list when ya buy pseudoephedrine cough and cold remedies...), diverson programs run by a specific sect of the "drug abuse cottage industry", rehabilitation programs run by that same "drug abuse cottage industry", law enforcement, or more dollars can fix this problem. It is, at it's heart, a behavioral and belief problem. I'm sure that some opiners here will be horifified by this assessment and its brutally blunt conclusions; but that's ok. Be assured that it is written by a little old man who has seen the drug and alcohol problem first hand. The people involved either died (...several did...) or they were rehabilitated --- the stark "life or death" choice. It simply was not whipped by the people i am kin to and love by "programs". It was overcome by the stark realization that this sort of behavior endangers both the user and others. It is a road that has two forks; death for yourself and / or others, or rehabilitation and life (...sometimes a pretty pitiful one if you have a drug indcued stroke or have the sad occasion to carry the guilt of destroyed relationships or innocents killed or maimed by drug besotted behavior....). I firmly believe that there will always be some fraction of people who will choose to cut their lives short with drugs; and, in the process; either burden or even kill the innocent thru their actions. It has always been so, and will not change. For those who do not choose this path; correctly modelled behavior and teaching are the best way to combat this problem. Correct behavior simply has to be modelled correctly and taught within the family unit. Our current system of "shared societial sacrifice" (....read that:...more money for "diversion", more money for "rehabilitation", more money for "enforcement", signing and givin a pint of blood for OTC peseudoephedring purchase, or anything else ya can think up....) hoisted on us by the political class, the "experts", and others will fix this problem. As long as people ignore the truth of the matter; that is, "...That you are responsible for you."...., and accept the twin mornic notions of "shared societal guilt", and that "increased spending" fixes everyting, this problem will continue to grow. Thats how i see things thru my bespeckeled eyes this evenin. leroy

An "N" frame smith, great as it is, simply aint a consealed carry gun. Its a field carry gun that ya can only cary owb or shoulderholster. They are heavy, over 40 oz. Fourty ounces is 2 1/2 pounds. Beck Pretty upset about Supreme Court Ruling Worth a Look
leroy replied to JG55's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
All:________________ I've resisted (...just a little bit...) saying much about the moaning thats goin on over the Nobamacare thing. I wuz a bit suprised when i heard it yesterday; along with being a bit puzzled why this happened. I did a bit of diggin and reading, and here is some of what ive concluded (...with the help of several other opiners...). We have no way of knowin exactly what went on here, but consider this: Lets suppose that the court was hopelessly deadlocked 4 to 4 on this with Roberts lookin on. He see's that this is a partizan issue (...it is...) and he thinks a bit. He thinks back a few years and sees where the supreme court has been dragged around and used as an excuse and whipping boy for fixing unpopular legislation (...and it has...). It dawns on him that he can save his legacy and the supreme court's name (...either good or bad, depending on your point of view...) by saying (...and being right...) that the legislative branch of government has, indeed, the power to tax. He joins the liberal justices and gives a 5/4 majority on the tax issue. The liberals take it because it appears to "save their political associates and their great god nobama." He ALSO GETS TO WRITE THE OPINION (...this is very important...). He says that nobamacare can stand as a tax and chides the politicos reminding them that "elections have consequences"; and further states that the ruling is based on the power of congress to tax; not the wisdom or validity of the reasons for passage of such a law. He then writes that the law WILL NOT PASS THE COMMERCE MUSTER (...which is very important to us...). This effectively says that there is a limit on the power of congress to pass laws based on the "commerce clause" to compel citizens to do and buy things. This is important, because it is the lynchpin of every demorat social program that has been crammed down everyones throats since FDR. This is a huge thing. You can be certain that had a liberal justice wrote this opinion; that they would have never said that; but Roberts did; saving us all from a continuation of "mandates" thru the commerce clause. Further, in talking about the Medicade funding issue, he put a stop to the heinous and punitive practice of the federal government bullying states who dont comply with something the fed wants to do by witholding tax dollars that are, in fact, due the states. In the past, the fed withheld money when there was a tiff with the state. Roberts put an end to that. Now, all the fed can do to get a state do do what they want to do is to bribe them with more money, not withhold dollars due them as punishment. Whats the fallout from all this stuff ive talked about above: - For Roberts (...not necessarily for us...) his legacy and the supreme court has been spared any charges of being paritzan by striking down a law that was duly passed by congress; e.g. duly deliberated on and voted on legislation; taking away the arguement that the court is "usurping the power of the people" -- HEHEHE. I think this is important to them, not necessarily to us. It also calls nobamacare what it is, a tax, not a "mandate" or a "right to healthcare". - For the first time ever; Roberts puts a limit on what congress can do via the "commerce clause". This is a big deal. FDR packed the supreme court to get his way and used the commerce clause to implement the hoard of "new deal" socialist policies that remain and burden this country to this day. This may effectively kill the "unfunded mandate" thing. This is a great victory for all citizens. - He stopped the heinous practice of the federal government from withholding dollars from the states in order to get their way. He said the fed could bribe; not coerce the states to do their will. He made coersion illegal. Another huge win for the states rights thing. - In one fell swoop he put the onus back on the legislative branch to fix the "tax" thing. Remember, nobama said this wasnt a tax. It now is a tax. The largest one ever levied on the american people. - Nobama said that this specifically was not a tax. Roberts said it was. The demorats now have to convince everybody that a tax aint a tax. - I think he handed the election to Mitt Romney and the republicans yesterday. Now everybody is mad about this stuff, because its suddenly a tax. - All the "sweetheart deals" and exemptions passed out to nobama's buddies are suddenly thrown out the window. The "tax" is a "tax". There cant be any exceptions. HEHEHE. - Drudge reported the Romney campaign raised a ton of money yeaterday. Romney took the hint. He said "...its up to us to repeal nobamacare. To repeal it, you need to get rid of nobama. Elect me and a republican senate and that's exactly what we will do. Think about all this a bit. We may need to start a TGO fund to erect a statue of John Roberts. He may have very well saved a bunch of things that we hold dear. He could just be the first supreme court justice in a long time that actually read and followed the constitution in his opinion. Food for thought. leroy -
I live pretty close to what are the two to three largest meth producing counties in tennessee. They are Northern Anderson, Scott, and Claiborne counties. These areas are rugged, rural, and have a pretty high unemployment figure. Local law enforcement will readily admit that they simply cant control this problem; its simply too big. It apprears (...to me, at least...) that meth (...and "weed"...) have taken the pace of legal cash crops in some places; and have replaced moonshine whiskey in others. I suspect that some fracton of these "makers" would get a real job if they could find one; but they simply cant. Havin said that, there are always some idiot types who make meth to both take themselves and sell. The great thing about that is that it tends to be "self limiting". If ya dont kill yourself makin the meth; you will kill yourself takin it. I see that as a good thing, as long as the "maker and taker" aint you or your family member. I grew up in a family that wuz full of alcoholics. They were alcoholics simply because they made that choice. You simply cannot mandate that people have good sense. The biggest fallout and problem that we see in my area is the increase in theft, robbery, and home invasion from addicts lookin for the dollars to buy meth. That is being pretty well handled by homeowners shooting the perpetrators. The meth problem is just another reason you need to be armed; and armed all the time. I have sympathy for the families and children of these meth heads and cookers who are causin this trouble. I have nothin but contempt for those doin the deed. Let them either blow themselves up or take enough of this poison to finish themselves off. Both armed citizens and LEO have adopted a "shoot when provoked" policy in my neck of the woods; and for good reason. Some of these idiots are dangerous people. leroy

The military is presently under the civilian command of some pretty pukey people. I cant think of anyone worse than Leon Panetta; let alone this socialist handlers and buddies in the whitehouse. That civilian authority may, indeed, be thinking some pretty heinous thoughts. I do not believe, however, that those heinous thoughts can be turned to treasonous actions blindly perpetrated by the United States Military. Abraham Lincon wuz the last guy to think (...and act...) on the thought of domestic military action against his own brothers and sisters; and he wuz provoked pretty bad by the happenings at Fort Sumpter. I say, let em practice. It is awakening more and more citizens. Remember, there is an election this year. Vote early and often. I'ts a shame that the people of tennessee were foolish enough to elect Alexander. The problem is that he has built so broad a a fan club that i dont think he can be beat. The demorats would be worse (...incrementally, i think...). The republicans cant successfully challenge him. He is exactly where Howard Baker was when he was in office. Maybe he'll retire soon and Bill (...the Snozz...) Haslam can take his place. Sad leroy

vujade: RE: Your concern. "... Is it unreasonable that a barrel could be worn out? (I can certainly see the rifling but what is a true test?) I never thought of that. ....". ---- The barrel aint worn out. This rifle is shootin pretty good for an off the shelf rifle. Like mike says; sometimes there aint any ryme or reason to lots of this stuff. You just have to experiment a bit. Several years ago, i spent a pretty good amount of time shootin a Ruger M77V (...heavy barrel...) with a 12 power lyman. Did the whole thing with the brass and 168 grain match bullets. Five shot groups in the .5 to .75 range. I think anything hovering around .5 with a "medium kicker" like the 308 is pretty good shootin for country boys usin off the rack rifles. I'll freely admit that my experience is dated to the early eighties; and that's 30 or so years ago now. Ya might want to try the rifle at 200 or 300 yds and see if it settles down a bit. Mike makes an excellent point about the bullets not fully stabilizing in the first 100 yds or so (...i know that sounds crazy, but it's true....). I would try at 200 to 300 yds on a calm day and compute my moa (...ive got a 300 win mag that does this all the time. The bullet simply doesnt stabilize until after at least 100 yds or so...). Ya might be pleasantly suprised. Keep in mind that .7 inches at 100 yds is 2.1 at 300 yds. Agout the distance from the center of a hawgs nose to his eye. I say that's pretty damn good shootin. Let us know how things turn out. leroy L
