I'm  a lefty myself.  For the 1911 type pistols, i use an ambi safety and it solves the problem.  Havin said that; i dont carry 1911 type pistols too much anymore.  They are simply too valuable to set in a police locker for several years if (...God forbid...) you ever have to do any shootin that counts.  Now, I tend to carry the glock type pistols; and i carry them right handed.  If ya spend lots of time in the car, a left handed draw is a problem.  My advice, practice both ways; and carry on your right side in a car.  Once ya get used to it, you will find out that you can shoot acceptably with either hand.  The big key here is to find out what pistol feels right to you and to practice (...a lot of practice...) with it.   Hope this helps. leroy

As other brother and sister opiners have said; "....it couldnt happen to a nicer guy....".  Reid is guilty as sin and full of felonys (...i think...).  Do a bit of readin about what has went on in Nevada during his tenure and you'll see what i mean.  Reid went from bein a poor guy (....in relative terms...) to a very rich man during his tenure in government.    More than that, i think it's very interestin that this is commin out at a time when political tensions are at pretty much an all time high for my life time, at least.  Could it be that some political enemies are pushin back and sendin a message?   Interestin stuff.   leroy

It seems that i remember that there wuz a section in one of the supreme courts decisions that addressed this.  The loose pharaphrase wuz that: "....attempts to regulate (...or excessively tax??...) ammunition are tatamount to regulating arms...".  That is a "no-no".  I doubt that a 250% tax would pass muster under this condition.  Maybee some of our guys with access to the legal opinions will opine on this.   leroy

There are a bunch of mad dog lawyers waitin for Nobama to issue an Executive Order that violates the Bill of Rights.  It will be sent to the Supreme Court in an expedited fashion and summarily struck down.  I hope he does.  This "Executive Order" business is red meat for his constituency and fooder to infuriate those like us.  You can issue any kind of order ya want if it aint challenged in court.  This one will be challenged.   Nobama couldnt get the "rat on your customers" thing (....buying more than 2 rifles at a time....) as an ATF and Department of Justice directive.  I say, go ahead Barak. .......Remember, dear sweet bruthr barak is the prez; not a tsar or dictator (...yet...). .....    leroy

I predict that if any sitting polititian of any flavor votes his "conscience" as they are fond of sayin on these "difficult matters" (...read that a "yes" vote for this gun control thing....) in a red state (...and most likely in a purple state like North Carolina, or even a nominally blue state like Missouri....); they will be voted out regardless of party.  The only polititians that can afford to vote for this kind of statist baloney are those safely ensconsed in the deep blue states like Kalefornia, New York, etc...    I'm old enough to remember the gun control act of 1968.  A bunch of grand old polititians were turned out over it; including Al Gore, Sr.; a 6 term demorat senator from our fair state.    All that bein said, we need to keep up the pressure on these sons and daughters of satan to see that they dont sell us out.  I sugguest strongly supporting the NRA.  This is the big one.    I also believe that if any sort of "gun ban" is passed; it will head straight to the Supreme Court where i think it will be done in.  The court has essentially said that gun ownership is an individual right; and that the individual states (...not the federal government...) may reasonably regulate the wearing of arms with an eye to keeping the peace, so to speak.  Under the current intrepretation given by the court; i aint sure the original firearms act of the twenties and the gun control act of 1968 would pass muster.   All that bein said, keep the pressure on the political class so we wont have to find all that out.   leroy

Some good advice and some fun in this thread.  As some of the most serious posters said, look around at the nearest state trade school or community college for a basic welding course.  I would concentrate on the stick/TIG welding stuff.  Better to learn it first.  That's how we trained in the "old days".  The comments RE:  The miller AC/DC machine(s) are excellent advice.  GMAW or "wire welding" is a specialty thing used in autos and production shops.  Ya can always learn it later.  Once ya learn the stick technique, the rest is easy.  All this stuff is kin to eachother.  Check this book out:http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/9994925822/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all.   Buy the cheapest one.  They all say about the same thing.  Drop by your local welding supply house (...hunt a big one like Holston Gas or another large operation....).  Ask them for their welding and electrode guides and do a bit of reading.   Hope this helps a bit and good luck.  Welding is kinda like shootin; the more ya practice after ya learn the fundamentals; the better ya get.   leroy

I think it would be hard to beat a PPS in any flavor.  I would love to have one in 40 S & W myself.  The problem is when i find one i dont have the dough, and when i have the dough (...hardly ever anymore; too many places to put it, it seems...), i cant find the pistola.  The PPS is a bit more pricey than the S & W, but they are a great little pistol.   Merry Christmas! leroy

All:  3.9 grains of WW231 and anybodies (...mostly hornady...) jhp shoots just fine thru my sig p238.  Brass looks good.  Accuracy good. Havent chronograped it yet; but im bettin over 900 fps.  Would probably work great with a lead bullet as well.   leroy

Jason:___________   Thanks for posting pictures of your neat little pistol.  I've been carryin one of his more humble brothers (....black nitrolon with nite sights...) in my front pocket in a dm bullard pocket holster for about 2 or 3 years now.  It goes everywhere i go in my right front pants pocket.  Its been carried so much that it's beginnin to acquire a bit of character (...lightening up a bit on the "rubbed" edges...) and im ok with that.  They are meant to be carried.  Mine shoots like a dream.  Very little recoil and plenty accurate.  It has fed everything ive put thru it (....including handloads...) with 100% reliability.   I'm a fan on the small pocket pistol; its a relic of a bygone era that has come back around.  When i wuz a boy here in the hills, no finished hillside gentleman would be without a pocket pistol.  They used them then for the same reason we need 'em now.   Congratulations on your little pistola!! Remember regulations and executive orders are subject to judicial review if they are challenged in court.  The federal court and the supremes have already ruled on this one.  The gun grabbers lost.   leroy

As sad as this one is; it is goin to be a redux of the Jared Laughtner thing regarding the "gun control" issue with a couple of important differences.  Laughtner (...like this kid, apparently...) wuz a nut.  Laughtner bought his gun(s) lawfully and his nutty tendencies were protected by the universities.  He went out and shot and killed several folks.     This 20 year old apparently murdered his mom and stole the guns from her house (...if i wuz reading right...).  This 20 year old nut did a heinous, unthinkable, nutty thing by murdering children and a few adults.  He broke the law; as to both firearms and murder.  No amount of law would have fixed this one.  It is the heinous, nutty act of a mad man.  The real criminals (...outside of this 20 year old...) are the folks who may have coddled and sheltered his tendencies; overlookin the potential for this type crime.    Once the adults start lookin at this one, i predict they will shut up and quit talkin about it because all of what they want in firearms restrictions are in place in the peoples democratic republics of CT and NJ; and some smart guy will bring that up.  There is also that pesky thing (...to them, at least...) called the Second Amendment.  I predict that the usual "we need to tighten up gunlaws" platitudinous baloney will be spoken by the usual jackasses like Bloomberg and others.  Dingy Harry will ignore it in the senate and so will Bohener in the house.   leroy

I firmly believe the "bluenose" wing of the Republican party wants nothing more than to govern and have a piece of the pie; said another way: "...they have no core beliefs other than keepin their stinkin jobs and playin ball with the party in power....".  I believe they will morph into the demorat party and become the "moderate wing".  I say good riddance.  The sooner this "purge" is over and the sooner a real conservative party emerges; the better we will all be.   leroy

The Nobamaites dont see "violence" as a problem when it is directed against their "enemies"; so it shouldnt be a surprize that they arent sayin anything about this "violence".  What you are seeing is a toned down "re-do" of what happened in wisconsin.  If the old boy that is governor of Michigan is smart (...and i think he is...), he will call out the state police and start roundin up this rabble to calm it down.   I aint sure he will even have to do anything to them other than say that he is goin to do this (...other than for a few hard case thugs that the union may have...).  I believe that once this is done, two things will happen:  the first is that things will calm down; the second is that the state of michigan will put the "in-justice" department on the spot.  I doubt they (...the "in-justice departent...) will take a side; because it goes against established law.  I think the "in-justice department" will keep quiet and Nobama will continue to keep quiet or give a nod of sympathy to the union rats pushin back on the "right to work" thing.   There has been a popular vote in michigan and legislation duly passed by the legislature allowing the "right to work."  Those who go against it (...individuals and organizations...) are committing criminal acts when they violently demonstrate or cause trouble. Thuggery is always against the law, no matter the aledged cause or catylist.    The problem with the union thugs and the nobamaites is that they think that its 1933 and that there is some great "grievance" that is associated with the "right to work"; and that most people will back their position.  That simply aint so.  The only grevience in michigan is that both the people that want to work and the union rats are mostly out of work (...except for the teachers union...) and gettin poorer; and that the union bosses cant demand union dues from folks that dont believe in the union; much less want to pay any dues to it. Those who simply want to work are hopin that the "right to work" thing will put them back to work (...and i think it will , eventually...).   The fact is that the legislature would have never passed this "right to work" thing if there had been plenty of popular sentiment against it.  The legislators are elected by their individual constituent groups.  The dammed union rats lost, and they are tryin to intimidate and push back on those who have the power to pass legislation.  I doubt it will work.  What you see goin on in michigan should be a very instructive lesson about the "richeousness of the union cause" to those who are ambivalent about the unions and their bosses.  The union at it's heart and beginnings is a thug organization far more than a "protector of rights"; as they would have you believe.   This one will be interestin to watch; but i predict it will die in a week or two with a whimper.   leroy

This is a genuine tragedy. There are simply no words for this one. Guns thought to be unloaded are the most dangerous thing there is to be handled. You simply cannot afford to "think" they are unloaded. You must know they are unloaded. I saw this on a personal basis in my younger days. A family close to us had a 5 year old handle a "thought to be unloaded shotgun". She was killed on Thanksgiving Day. It almost destroyed the family; and it was a big one. The uncle with the "thought to be unloaded shotgun" never got over it. My prayers go out to this family. leroy

Used to carry one in a Maxpedition bag. Wuz a model 629. No problem at all to carry. If ya carry a briefcase or something big enough to carry books or a laptop in; the maxpedition stuff works like a charm. No one pays any attention to folks carryin business and computer type bags. If ya wear dungarees or overalls, ya can stuff a glock 33 or a glock 27 in a hip pocket holster (...i like Alan Miller's kydex...).
