  1. Link:  The "Japanese Winchester" thing caught my eye... In the long ago, Browning imported some absolutely beautiful winchester 92 action rifles in 44 mag and 357... They were all 16 inch carbines and were absolute works of art...We have one on the 44 mag carbines and it shoots like a dream.... My guess is that SKB built them for Browning.... If the Winchesters are built by SKB (...or whoever built the Brownings...); they will be a real rifle...  As to the others: ive not shot, but have handled the ubertis.... They are an excellent rifle....   Good luck, leroy
  2. Aint it a Walther copy of a PP?... Dont think ya can separate the barrel from the frame...  Maybe some walther folks can chime in...  I think it strips down by pullin the trigger guard down an the slide releases forward... The barrel and frame stay together as one unit (...i think; that means i aint sure...)...   leroy
  3.   RE:  "...The fryin pan thing..."... My 24 year old son has a friend who beat the livin s**t out of her estranged spouse, left him in the yard for dead, then called her dad still mad at him evidently hopin her dad would finish the job and kill him.... The dad came over, took a look; and told him that he had come over to kill him; but that it looked like the daughter had come close enough to to doin the job without dad's help.... Sometimes, brutality is the answer....   leroy
  4. Red meat for the "children".... Nothin more...   leroy
  5. Im kinda like Punisher on this one...   It would seem that the "Z-Man" has terrible taste in women.... He seems ta find them carpet-baggin harpys and shrill-voiced, sharp toungued shrews way too often.... That seems ta be the only thing that explains his problem with women...   Maybee the Z-man is lookin in the wrong places for 'em... He may need to move across the track or back in the woods a bit and pick him out a good ole home grown country woman....   The Z-man seems harmless enough ta me; except maybe when he's gettin his brains beat out...   Maybe dear sweet Trayvon hit him harder than the prosecution and we know and addled his "woman picking center" and changed his personality...?   Where's Dr. Neil Clark Warren when ya need him?....   leroy, the pre-nuptual counselor and amateur opiner on the human condition
  6.   I would take a look at throwing out the highest velocity and the lowest velocity and then look at the "range"; if the "range" is, indeed the difference between the high and low; then i would look at the data... I would average the remaining velocities and see what i got; then look at the "range"... I think all the powder is burnin in the 7.5 inch barrel...   RE:  The 20 inch barrel question... If the powder is gettin a complete burn in the 7.5 inch barrel; it stands to reason to me that ya get the same thing in the longer barrel... Complete burn = consistent velocities = low "range"... I would always believe that ya would get more consistent velocities out of a rifle; no cylinder-bore misalignment, no bullet jump across a gap, etc....   I would resize the brass all the way and put a heavy roll crimp on the bullets in the crimping groove and see what that does...  My thinkin on the AA #7 and 2400 is that it is just a tad faster than the AA#9 ... quicker pressure peak, quicker acceleration of the lighter bullet... ... I still think the 180 grain bullet is a tad light for the powder...  If ya intend to use a lighter bullet, my guess is that ya need a tad faster powder...   Maybe someone will do a Quickload run and see if my "guess" is on target....   leroy
  7. The "old timers" will tell ya that powders have a characteristic curve with a hump in some cases that will actually show ya a decrease or even "flat line" after an "optimum" (....read that maximum for that particular powder and bullet weight...) is reached...My guess (...and it is a "guess"; that means that i dont know for sure...) is that you have hit it for the 180 grain bullet at 22.6...   I would be willing to bet that it would keep goin up a bit if the bullet weight wuz increased (...say to 200,  225, 240, even 300...)... AA#9 is a pretty slow burnin powder and the slow burners evidently need a lot of resistance to do their best... My guess is that it's all burnin; but the bullet resistance needs to go up...  That means in english that ya are at the maximum velocity for this particular bullet / powder combination  (...i think...)....   Havin said all that; 1424 fps aint too shabby out of a 7.5 barrel... My guess is that to get the factory (...UMC....) velocities; ya need a bit faster powder... I would try AA#7 or 2400... Maybe some of the guys who do the "QuickLoad" program thing can chime in here... Take a look at the Alliant reloader guide on line... For a 200 grain bullet; the "recipe" is 24.0 grains of 2400 and a cci 300 primer for 1589 fps (...pistol load....)...   leroy
  8. This has been an interestin thread; with lots of stuff to think about...   I tend to look at the historical and here's what i see....   The 1911 semiauto pistol wuz the replacement for that greatest of indian war killers the colt single action army...  It wuz birthed at a time when the good ole us army needed to upgrade it's handgun arsenal at a time when there were troopers in the army and marine corps who were genuine steely eyed grim reapers who well knew what a handgun wuz for and knew exactly how to use it; and those troopers were in both the officer and enlisted ranks...    The semiauto pistol wuz "the next new thing"; just as the machine gun wuz at that time; and the army wuz interested in exploring the practicability of a hard use handgun for calvary use (....remember, this wuz the time when the calvary wuz still the king of battle...)...   The military well remembered the poor performance of the 38 caliber pistols in the Philippine insurrection and many of the old time troopers would not give their beloved single action armies up in that best of old time killers, the 45 Colt....     It's no accident that the military ultimately adopted a semiauto pistol in a 45 caliber; simply because it was a shortened version of the old 45 Colt....  The pistol was a success with men who actually knew about killin (...unlike many of the "so called pistol experts" of today...)... The old timers liked the external hammer and the quick reload of the 1911... The rest, as they say, is history....   The fact is that the 1911 came along at exactly the right time in history... It wasn't a "God Inspired" genius thing; it was the next step in pistol design...  It wuz made in a caliber that wuz a proven killer in the right hands...Simply put, it wuz an updated 45 Colt ALA the old time single action army calvary model from 1873...   The 1911 has reigned supreme on the battlefields and in the hands of the "real steely eyed killers" for over 100 years now... Its only real challengers are the utilitarian plastic pistols made by the pesky Austrians at Glock and the lesser children that are copies of this ground-breaking design... The next classic will be the Glock in whatever flavor ya like.... I tend to think that the 45 ACP is a helluva idea in a Glock; along with the 10 mm; but that's just me...   I'll end this little musing by sayin that the 1911 is a great thing... We've got several of em... I used to carry one... But it's just a "thing" man; as the ole hippy would say.... My only problem with them now; is that they are just too expensive to carry...The next big thing is the Glock; and it's here now...   All this from an old time blue steel and walnut S & W and Colt snob who never saw an N frame smith, a colt single action, or a colt 1911 he didnt like....There aint none of 'em i aint carried... I like 'em all....   Havin said that, all of our blue steel and walnut guns are in honored retirement (...with the exception of a special 629 my 24 year old carries; he just wont give 'em up....), occasonally pulled out to look at an praise the greatness of on warm, sunny days, shown to dear friends and admirers on special occasions...   The "working and carryin" guns that protect the person and the house are the big and little glocks....The others are just collectors pieces from another, greater time and place....   leroy, the 1911 admirer and glock user....
  9. This is interestin stuff...  It seems to me that everybody is pretty well sick of the "Bloomberg paternalistic plantation"; and i think that is a good thing.... Maybe the son of satan will go broke (....but i doubt it....) backing this stupid stuff...    Here's hopin, leroy
  10. I like it  man!!!  The problem is that it's "little brother" is in the driveway...  2000 wrangler sahara, 3 1/2 lift, 35 inch cepeks, american mags, hard top, 4.0 inline, 5 speed...  I love 'em......   leroy
  11.   Jeff:  I think they are hard to beat... They have a steel grip frame like the old flattops did... You will enjoy it...   Have fun.... leroy
  12. Jeff:  We've been shootin ruger single actions since the seventies... They are the "best of the best" when it comes to durability... I've put thousands of heavy loads thru both 41mag and 45 colt blackhawks... We're still shootin them and there have been zero problems...   As to the 357 thing; if i wuz a young man and had good eyes and the vaquero wuz at the same price; i would take it in a minute... I like the "old timey" look and feel (...the vaquero will have a steel grip frame...)... If i wuz older (...im a geezer -- now 67....), i would take the blackhawk because of the adjustable sights... They are just easier to see...   The down side, with the older blackhawks, at least, is that they have an aluminum grip frame... It makes the revolver feel a bit different; but it's nothin too big to worry about...   The downside of the vaquero is findin out what loads shoot to point of aim... Ya can simply adjust the sights on the blackhawk to the point of aim...   My guess is that the vaqueros are regulated to point of aim with factory ammo; but i dont know that for sure...   Anyway, ya cant go wrong with either one... They are both great choices... You will enjoy them thoroughly... Why not "collect 'em all"... That's what always seemed to happen to us... We've got a safe full of 'em.....   Have fun, leroy
  13. Just ran some 170 grain hard cast loads in 38 special cases thru our 357 vaquero sheriff... Eleven grains of 2400 (...my guess is about 1050 to 1100 fps...); pretty much an old time 38-44 hi speed load... It shot dead to point of aim...  Excellent load from the "old days"...   leroy
  14. For some reason, i think, (...that means i dont know for sure...) that this boy is facing misdemeanor charges... I want to say its a "class three misdemeanor" (...whatever that  is...) for the snake thing...  Mabee some of our wildlife guys can speak to this one....   leroy
  15. We know some of the involved parties in this one (...thankfully, from a far off... no visits to our home or to theirs...)... The thought is that the recent National Geographic TV segment on this ole boy provided the "evidence" for the charges... This one will be great to watch...   The real sad truth of this story is that it "....will give great opportunity for the haters of God to blaspheme Him..." and paint Christianity as something it simply is not... This stuff, is at best, misguided ignorance; and at worst, a trip down the lane of sensationalism and nuttiness for imagined fame a few dollars... My vote is for the latter....   It would appear to me that "snake handling"  religious observances could, in fact, be self-limiting... If i wuz a committed Darwinist, i would say, let "natural selection" and "survival of the fittist" take it's course here...   I cant wait for what's next here....   leroy
  16. Ill buy this on a general basis:   My observation and disgust with this little snippit is in at least two directions... I'm kinda like 6.8 and Mike; state-sponsored counterfeiting of bogus goods (...if it can, indeed, be proven....) seems to be a federal criminal espionage related genuine crime.... I find that curious that this has evidently moved from bein a civil issue to a federal criminal issue...   I can buy the argument that counterfeiting currency, bonds, financial instruments, wire-fraud, bogus cash transfers, money-laundering is a bad, potentially disastrous act; especially when it is state sponsored... I'll also buy the idea that lack of adequate enforcement of bans on "intellectual property" and "trademarked" goods" can, in fact, hurt genuine small operators and entrapeneurs from a financial and "intellectual property" perspective...   I simply dont buy the idea that this should somehow be high on the list of enforcement tasks for the federal gubmt and that the penalties should be as severe as we've evidently legislated them to be...  Given the facts in this particular case; evidently it is not the case; because the company guys did all the leg work...    Havin said all that, take the time to do a google search of "raids on counterfeit items" and take a look at the amount of stories that are listed... There appears to be lots of federal investigation of this stuff goin on...   Bein the unkind, suspicious sort that i tend to be; i could easily allow my feeble mind to wander and i could begin to start thinkin that it is both a lot easier and a lot safer to hunt down and prosecute vendors and flea market sellers than it is to go out and round up hardened killers...   In my mind, at least, the real problem is that things have gotten so bad that a geezer like me and lots of other otherwise sensible folks tend to think the worst about the motives of gubmt, even when it may be doin the right things for the right reasons...  I think that is the biggest problem that we are facin in this country in the citizenry vs gubmt arena, and its a shame...   The second issue is that you can rest assured that the criminalization and upping the penalties for this "intellectual property" and "trademark" thing wasn't emplaced to help the individual inventor, artist, or entrepreneur... It wuz emplaced as a bone thrown to the military-industrial sector and the hollywood artist and entertainment sector... It had nothin to do with protecting inventors and individual artist... It had everything to do with currying the favor of big political donors... I simply dont like that one on general principle... The way i see things is that, sadly, everything is for sale... Could it be that gubmt muscle is for sale here?.... Its both a terrible and interestin thing to think about...   When everything is for sale, it's generally a short step to the next sale; and it could well affect you adversely... The sad fact is that we have moved far afield from the original intent of all these laws and have tailored them to help the "favorite sons" at a pretty good cost to the general citizenry...     leroy
  17. TMF:  I agree that "...thieving of intellectual property is bad for capitalism..."; and is also bad for those tryin to make an honest living...   My problem is that it appears to be a selective priority with the gubmt that feeds the "ABC kick in the door" segment of the bureaucracy...  I'll grant that this is a "dammed if ya do and dammed if ya dont" thing for the enforcers; but it looks ta me like this thing is, at best, a mis-prioritization and frivolous use of gubmt dollars; and, at worst, a bone thrown to the "fortunate sons" among us....   My vote if for the latter... Hollywood and the artists organizations lobbied hard for and got this stuff; along with the military-industrial segment... At the end of the day, this aint about protectin mom and pop operations; nor individual entrepreneurs; its about protectin the "fortunate sons" in ways that real citizens can never hope to enjoy....   On a personal basis, i think that the "door kickin" branch of gubmt ought to be reigned in and that the documents that authorize the "door kickin" ought to be public; and maybe they are... My point is that the citizenry and the legislative branch ought to be watchin them closely... This one looks a bit frivolous to me...   While im on this soapbox; we've basically got open borders in this country due do to the bridling of the Border Patrol and ICE for political purposes and selective law enforcement... My priorities may be all wrong; but it looks to me like these resources that we're havin to borrow money to pay for would be put to much better use watchin the border and the container ship ports of entry for suitcase nukes and dirty bombs than huntin fake guccis...  There is a very low likelihood of the counterfeit gucci's doin any real damage to anyone other than the buyer's pocketbook and the bottom line of those with enough money and influence to lobby for these sorts of laws and their prioritization of enforcement efforts...   More than that, we aint gonna do anything meaningful to the Red Chinese (...if they are the culprits in this case...)... They are our biggest trading partner... At the end of the day, this is most likely about protectin the "fortunate sons" among us and slappin the business men that may or may not know they are peddlin bogus merchandise for the red chinese....   I aint pickin on you or anyone else about this... I'm simply askin folks that may be inclined to think this is a good thing to think thru it a bit...   leroy
  18. Check this out: http://www.dhs.gov/news/2012/05/17/written-testimony-us-immigration-and-customs-enforcement-house-ways-and-means   Look at the fourth paragraph... It appears that the Immigration and Customs Service do the investigating; and the Immigration and Customs Service is a part of DHS.... I'll grant that making counterfeit stuff is a criminal offense... I aint so sure about simply selling it... The "door kickin" commentary still doesnt change... These "ABC" gubmt bureaus are a menace to this country....   leroy
  19. While we are on this subject; check this out: http://www.rightwingnews.com/column-2/a-one-size-fits-all-government-cannot-survive-in-the-ipad-era/   leroy
  20. I would say to all of those who think the DHS raid on counterfeit stuff is ok in the kindest possible way; just think about this a bit....      Number one; "... where is the "probable cause" and the warrant for this search?.... .  Number two;.... just why does DHS have jurisdiction in this particular case?...  Number three;... Just what is the justification for a full armed "commando assault" (...if it, indeed, was an armed assault...) on this business?... Number 4; suppose for a minute or two that you are a law abiding business man that has through no fault of your own, unknowingly bought some contraband or counterfeit merchandise.... What about your door; does it need kickin down too?...   Folks, this stuff aint ok; and no amount of lipstick smeared on this pig by the appologizers for government and those citizens who dont like counterfeit gucci bags will make it ok... Folks need to see to it that this stuff is handled thru the courts and not thru the antics of the apparatchiks of the "ABC" bureaus of government... If these guys can kick the "might-be counterfeiter's" doors in; they can kick yours in too...   West Wind Mike is exactly right about this... It's a civil issue and should be handled in the civil courts... Sadly, that wont be decided until some "fortunate son" is wronged and this sort of thing goes to the federal courts....This is more government "ABC" bureaucracy abuse, pure and simple... Be careful what you choose to condone... You could be on the wrong end of it someday...   leroy
  21. Interestin article... Great food for thought... Thanks for takin the time to post it...   My take is that we are simply being pushed along by liberal ideology and the usual robber baron stuff; and not by some diabolical, murderous conspiracy of evil geniuses bent on destroying this country... Harry Reid is a crook who has been made a milionaire at the gubmt trough... Republican luminaries like Mitch McConnell aint much better...Barak Obama is a nincompoop with narcissistic tendencies and a communist upbringing ALA the usual college professor syndrome who has no idea of what he is doin other than he can do what he wants with his subordinates and to dream of being the father of the Amerikan Utopia... I simply dont see these people as evil geniuses; they are crooks, reprobates, mental midgets, and demigogues; nothin more...   The US federal gubmt has become the new Roman Empire and two branches of the federal gubmt and their "ABC" apparatchiks in the govt bureaucracy is runnin wild, ruling against the real citizenry and is simply offering "food and the circus" to the non-productive among us... That wont last too long; simply because it cant sustain it's self....   I do believe that if they keep pushin, you are gonna see the state's rights thing come back with a vengeance just like it did before the Civil War... And i think that has been goin on for quite a while...   I dont think there will be a war this time; because the people involved don't have the stomach for it... Because we have freedom of travel here in this country; people will move (...ive got 35 year old neighbors from Long Island, NY who left their families to get away from the "blue state" thing... They wanted to keep their own money....), and the red states will simply get redder and richer and the blue states will get bluer and poorer...  The blue states will try to pick the pockets of the red states; but it simply wont work... The country will devolve into a loose confederation of states where "birds of a feather flock together"...    The statists will loose the most of the battles at the federal court level just like they are doin now; and the Constitution will be preserved as the supreme law of the land... The reason for that is not the integrity of the justices and the love of the rule of law--- far from it... The reason is that both sides of the political spectrum are intently watchin and hopin for a bad ruling...The federal judiciary, for the most part i think, understands that very well; and in a back-handed way, they are actually protecting the citizenry and themselves thru sane intrepretations of constitutional law...It's a self preservation thing to the federal judiciary and a "God Send" to the citizenry, i think....   Remember this; if the executive or legislative branch can make and enforce un-constitutional law; they can banish the courts... That simply aint gonna happen... The federal level judiciary well knows that; and that is why you are seein the provisions of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights being upheld with such great regularity... Who would have ever thought that the 21st century would have brought about the Heller decision... That sort of thing has not happened in over a hundred years...   More than that, the feminization of our society has resulted in the "feminization" of the would be jack-booted thugs it would take to implement this sort of thing...Where are you gonna find the hardened thugs that it would take to implement this sort of thing?... I certainly don't think they are in the military today....   I say this whole thing is an interesting diversion that means nothing in the big scheme of things... There's gonna be another election, and it's commin soon... What's goin on now aint a recipe for another winner for the sorts of folks that dream of being dictators...   All that bein said; i think we should be vigilant, keep our powder dry, vote, and see to it that the sort of thing the article talks about doesn't happen...   leroy
  22. It depends on where the "mid-range" is measured... My favorite is the 375 H & H... A fine mid range for afrikee... Hard hittin and dependable on most everything smaller than water buffalo and elephant...   Bawana leroy
  23. To add a bit to the SA whites vs blacks thing; the white farmers are evidently being picked off one at a time in nighttime raids by black thugs, being tortured, then killed... If ya look a bit at the world news or do a google search ya can find out lots of details ya dont want to know...   Most of the folks being murdered are 60 or older and are out in the boonies a good way; most likely old Boerer families with extensive land holdings that are descendents of the original white settlers... The government always "condemns" these acts; but they never seem to catch any perpetrators and the land belonging to the murdered folks have always seems to revert to the gubmt... There are many who believe that that these "death squads" are either government sanctioned; or, at the minimum, the gubmt is turnin a blind eye to the violence ALA the Holder INJustice Department...   Things are pretty bad in South Africa for both black and white folks right now; and i dont see that changing much as long as ya have the gubmt they have now... The fact is that the white government wuz a much better steward and protector of the citizens of South Africa than this bunch that the "Mandela Revolution" brought in... I've been whatchin to see exactly what happens down there when the black thugs get brave enough to try the Chinese with this sort of thing...   I'm a relatively old geezer (...67...), and ive got a high school buddy whose father was a missionary to the old Rhodesia (....now Zimbabwe...) in the sixties... They had to come home due to the same thing goin on in Rhodesia... That has been over 50 years ago... Things seem to be getting worse and worse on the "Dark Continent"...   leroy
  24. To add to what others have posted; ill join the chorus of good reports... We have a pair 51 navies, a whitneyville dragoon, and a remington 58... They are all exceptionally well made inside and out... My 24 year old used the pair of 51 navies extensively and i smithed them a bit to smooth up the actions... They shoot very well and are very accurate...   All that bein said; im sure the cartridge models are just as good or better... I dont think ya can buy a better replica single action army for the price... All that from a bunch that has a safe full of rugers (...old and new models...) and several colt saa's...   I say buy and use with confidence....   leroy
  25. I wonder just what is gonna happen when they go up against the real "hard cases" down there like the diamond and gold interests... I cant believe they will put up with bein robbed or even pushed around... I seem to remember several months ago that 33 or so striking miners were gunned down by their brothers in the South African police...    leroy
