  1. It's hard ta keep people from being what they are... If they are overbearing and unreasonable and are in a place where they exercise a bit of it publically; it will come out  pretty quickly... It's sad that in the season of kindness and brotherly love that more aren't; but that it the way of things....   leroy

  4. I think Dolomite's answer is the best one... We used to shoot lots of semi-benchrest center fire 22's... 222 remington and later 223... This is what we used on the barrels: http://www.brownells.com/gun-cleaning-chemicals/solvents-degreasers/bore-cleaning-paste/j-b-reg-bore-bright-prod1161.aspx   The old timers liked it a lot...   leroy
  5. The now deceased Nelson Mandela, the ANC and the present government of South Africa are far from being fair, honest, or kind... They are, in fact, murderous, corrupt and  brutally unkind...  The white apartied government of South Africa on it's worst days was never as corrupt or brutal as what they have now; the only difference is that now, their oppressors are black....   South Africa will straighten up its problems when the people of south africa get rid of the demagogues, rogues, and psychopaths who are systematically deceiving, murdering, oppressing and leading its citizens around like children...When the black south africans decide that their white neighbors are not the enemy and realize that the present apparatchiks of government are responsible for their plight; and when they actually take some steps to clean that problem up; they will make some real progress toward rebuilding south africa...   I liken the problem in south africa to the problem here in the good ole usa in lots of locations; principally in the crime ridden, ratty bluer big cities where machine politics rule and the citizens are voluntary serfs... The south africans are more "real" serfs than they are citizens and free men... The difference is that in south africa they are using police power and the bayonet to keep them that way....The truth is that white folks aint doin this; black demagogues and would-be dictators are doin it... There is simply no way ya can pin the present problems in south africa on "whitey"...Black majority rule and "one man one vote" has been in place in south africa for over 23 years (...since the early nineties, i think...)...   I dont think we can learn a dammed thing about race relations, how to run government, or how to get along together as fellow citizens from thugs like those currently running south africa or zimbabwe other than how not to do it...   leroy

  7. All:   Please take the time to take a look at this: http://www.bizpacreview.com/2013/12/11/colleges-cant-ban-guns-rules-florida-court-in-major-2nd-amendment-victory-88805   Very interesting, indeed... I've been waiting for someone with some sense to rule on this...   leroy
  8. As i remember, the 8 mm 06 wuz (...as others have pointed out above...) a "poor boy" answer to a good hunting rifle that wuz thought to be powerful enough for the "big deer" like moose and elk; even the big bears... The 8 mm 06 wuz a "poor boy" 35 whelen... The whelen wuz thought to be in those days a great "mid-bore" big animal rifle cartridge (...and it is...). Think of todays 338 magnum -- note the infintesimal difference between the .338, .323, and .358 bore diameter.... Interestin aint it?   There were evidently plenty of 8 mm mausers layin around that had come from the great wars...   In the "old days" there were many wizened gunsmiths and wildcatters that thought the 30-06 was about the ultimate cartridge (...i happen to think they were right...)... There was plenty of brass and the whelen wuz popular for "big" big game hunting; and there were many innovative wildcatters around in those days.... The "ultimate mid bore" rifle cartridge (....the 375 H & H is...) wuz out of reach for most ordinary hunters and wuz based on an extra long action that has always brought a premium; plus the actions were hard to find... Contrast that with the plentiful availability of the old 8 mm mausers... Plus they were relatively cheap... That made great fodder for all kinds of conversions... The mauser wuz a standard (...long...) action sized in the 30-06 range...  That translated into a "reasonable" priced action to convert to your favorite rifle caliber plus plenty of surplus brass layin around...That meant that everybody could own his own "custom" mid bore rifle with a relatively small cash outlay... A helluva idea...   To let ya know that there is nothin new under the sun; remington brought out an 8 mm magnum several years ago...It wuz based on the 300/338 winchester case... I dont know if they still make 'em today...   leroy

  10. Always remember this:   Everyone is a mixture of good and bad traits and pasts... I'm no Nelson Mandela fan; because of several things...   First, Mandela was, at the minimum, a socialist... I dont like 'em... period; but that's just me.... Secondly, Mandela has blood on his hands, no matter what people say... His actions incited bloodshead on both sides (...black and white...)... His wife, Winnie, was in fact the head of a shadow hit group that wantonly murdered opposition apparatchiks on both sides of the color spectrum...Mandela had to know about that...   Mandela's positive traits are notable as well; but the in no way (...in my opinion...) rise to the negative ones... Nelson Mandela had the bearing and the self control of a great man...That, alone, made his a giant to many; but those traits in no way can be used to ignore the darker ones and the carnage and destruction that it brought to south africa...   Take the time to read Newt Gingrich's statement concerning Mandela... Nelson Mandela was, in fact, unjustly imprisoned and persecuted and he endured that persecution, heinous as it was, with great dignity... Those actions won him the respect of many in the western world... He was seen by both black south africans and the rest of the western world as the "George Washington" of south africa.... The apartheid government was seen as being worse than satan himself....   As heinous as the aparthied "status quo" was in South Africa; it kept the country relatively prosperous and on a pretty even keel... Mandela's presidency and the "black majority rule" has brought nothing to South Africa except a downward economic spiral and lawlessness... The poor blacks that worked the diamond and gold mines are still poor and oppressed... Those who run the diamond and gold mines are still fabulously rich...   The sad news is that there is rampant lawlessness and political corruption in South Africa that simply wasnt there with white minority rule... The citizens, both old (...white...) and new (...black...) have traded the rule of law for corruption and murder on a vast scale... There is no escaping it...   Take the time to do a google search and you will learn that 30 or so striking black miners where shot dead by black South African policemen in a strike confrontation a few months ago...Their working conditions and lot in life is no better, some thirty years later, than they were under the white apartheid government...The difference is simply the color of their oppressors in government are now black....  Look a bit farther and you will learn that the white Afrikaaners and british landowners (...farmers...) are being systematically murdered in the most heinous ways by roving bands of black thugs "settling scores"; and their property is being confiscated by the present government... The women are being raped and dismembered and the men (...mostly old...) are being killed in the most heinous of ways... Not one of these murders has been solved; and many folks in all parts of the world believe that these "roving bands of murders", in fact, have the tacit approval of the government in this "ethnic cleansing" of south africa...   Nelson Mandela; that grandfatherly old Cheshire Cat smiling "Father of South Africa" is, in fact, responsible for this carnage and murder... That simply cant be denied... Having said all that; he has some other accomplices... They are the overbearing busybodies who ran the governments of the United States, Britain, and some lesser luminaries on the european continent... I well remember when we here in the united states obsessed with the rest of the world in pressuring the south african government into this "black rule" thing... The results were predictable and were foretold... As heinous as the apartied thing was in south africa; what they have now is just as bad; if not worse...   It's bad because those who were 'liberated" had no notion of liberty and responsibility in government... They were simply unequipped to govern themselves... They, in fact, proved the "white man's burden" thing that the british used to talk about... They were cursed with an army of political opportunists and demagogues that have made things worse for everyone in south africa; no matter whether white or black...   Nelson Mandela, along with the busybodies of the western world are directly responsible for this dismantling of a very prosperous country... I simply dont know whether the oppression of apartheid is any different from this new misery of the black working class and murder of the white minority in south africa.... The affluent, nosy, smartest guy in the room, sanctimonious, busybodies of the west have to bow down to the greatness and honor Nelson Mandela; they made him ... They have to to continue the myth that somehow they advanced freedom for the people of south africa; when the plain truth is that they have done just the opposite...   Ill grant that Nelson Mandela may have started his notable, world changing adventure with the best and purest of intentions... They simply didnt turn out well for anyone...   Ill end this little essay with a sobering observation... What happened (...and is happening...) in south africa is seen by some of this administration's operatives as a perfectly acceptable solution to "white rule" in this very country... It is my belief that this fact is the very reason for the notable absence of prosecution of black on white crime in of the bluer areas of this country... Thankfully the population ratios here are considerably different from south africa...   Elections mean things; if ya like the south african model, vote for more Barak Obamas; if ya dont like it; vote for someone else....   rememberin leroy

  13. We should never be suprized when the "political class" does bad (...even heinous...) things... We should be suprized when they are actually punished for it... Havin said all that; we have the "presumption of innocence" thing until proven otherwise....   watchin leroy

  21. A buddy of mine turned me on to Titegroup for 45 ACP... I like it... We use Titegroup and WW 231 a lot... I like it a lot for standard velocity pistol loads in all flavors... I dont think ya can go wrong with Titegroup, WW 231 (...or its Hogdon brother, cant think of its name...) or Unique... We've shot it by the tens if not hundreds of pounds over the years in everything from 380 ACP to 45 Colt... They all work great...   leroy
  22. Thank God this child is home and is ok...   We'll keep sending up the prayers for all of you...   leroy
  23. I say that if people like this sort of thing; as my 24 year old says; "...they need to keep on likin it..."...   It escapes me why New York City (...and the state, for that matter...) is considered a part of the United States...   Boss Tweed used to run New York City politics and the state as well... They have a new "Boss Tweed" in tyrants like Cuomo and Bloomberg and whoever the jackass wuz that they elected in their recent mayoral election... As far as im concerned, they can collect all the firearms they want to up there and the hapless serfs who live up there can keep bowin down and kissin the rings (...and other parts...) of these tyrant's anatomy...   The ones who love liberty will soon move out and allow this ratty place to turn from the "Great White Way" to another Detroit... I'm ok with wthat; just dont try to export it to other locations...   The hell with them all, the smart ones will leave; and those who like this stuff will keep electing the Bloombergs and Cuomos...   leroy

    .357 Sig?

The first "plastic"; pistol i ever owned wuz a 357sig (...Glock 33...)... An old gun tradin buddy of mine (...an avowed "N" frame smith guy...) said i needed to try one... This ole boy is a finished pistolero and regularly shoots most everything; so i knew he knew what he wuz talkin about... I knew that if he liked the little gun, it had plenty of potential....At the time, i was lookin for a small carry pistol that didnt cost an arm and a leg ALA the little 1911's...   I'm an old time reloader and i rounded up the stuff and loaded up some brass and some 125 grain sig bullets.... I used the tried and true recipe for them and loaded 13.0 to 13.5 grains of AA#9... These rounds will do an honest 1250 to 1275 fps (...my actual chronograph data...) out of the short barreled glock (....3.42 inches...)..., and it shoots straight as an arrow... It is, in fact, the best 9 mm type pistol i have ever owned... I've got the compact glock in 357 sig as well... Same thing... Utterly reliable, plenty of power, very accurate... Does it kick; yeah a bit, but it is easily controllable by a reasonably experienced shooter... Muzzle blast; yeah... no more than a 357 mag...   I am a confirmed 357 sig affectionado.... The 357 sig is, in fact, what was claimed for the 9 mm when the political class lied about the performance of the 9 mm in order to sell new pistols to the military in the eighties... Don't buy into the idea that a 9mm luger is anywhere as powerful as a 357 sig in the same length barrel... The sig case is bigger and holds more powder than the 9 mm...Ya can argue about the 9 mm plus plus; but i contend that aint a real 9 mm; its an breed of it's own...   If ya reload, i heartily recommend the sig in any size pistol ya like...I carry the glock 33 and a glock 27 (...40 s & w; same size as the 33...) pretty regularly... I liked the little sig so well in the glock type pistol; that from that one little pistol in 357 sig; there have sprung 3 more; includin a full size 10 mm... I like 'em...   Hope this helps a bit... leroy
  25. The way i understand this; the guy that got shot evidently wuz an entertainer who wuz (....i think, i dont know...) workin for the guy who did the shootin... Maybe bad blood, old debts, old anything; all of it pure speculation on my part.... Havin said that; the real fact is that i dont know... I'm gettin like you Dave: this one looks a bit strange to me from the get-go...I dont know of any "additional information" as yet...   leroy
