  2. I'm a semi-geezer and grew up with the ww2 guys being my uncles, dads, and mentors... I saw some fine ww2 bring backs; never have i seen one with "documentation"... As Austin said; i think it's a very valuable addition....   leroy

    Walther PPK

Walther PPK; the ultimate "gentleman's pistol"....The semi-auto competitor to an engraved "J" frame smith...  They are a great thing....   As to the "dangerousness" of the 380; Garufa and others have rightly opined:... no one who is on the "wrong end" of a 380 is gonna have a good day...  A 380 in the eye, temple or heart is a very bad thing... I say:... think more about accuracy and less about caliber.... The best pistol to have is the one youve got when ya need it...   I'd like to have a genuine old walther myself; im like some others here; i cant bring myself to spend the extra dough...   leroy
  5. I'm gonna wade into this conversation by way of a "blast from the past"... I used to shoot lots of long range rifle stuff back in the "old days" with turn bolt rifles... But rifles is rifles and the general principles should apply everywhere...   We always free floated barrels because of shot repeatability...(...And we never shot a group with a "clean" barrel; we always took a "fouling shot"...)  A free float barrel arrangement, no matter if turn bolt or AR, allows the barrel to vibrate freely and return to its natural rest position every time regardless... Lots of hunting rifles and some semi target stuff that wasn't free floated (...most weren't...) would string vertically as the barrel heated up and open up target groups.... Free floating a good barrel will make your rifle shoot better... Free floating a so so rifle will make it shoot a litttle bit better... It's been my experience that a rifle has a good barrel or it doesn't... Havin said that, there are individual differences to consider... I had (...and still have...) a 300 win mag 40X remington that went from about 1 1/2 at 100 (...which is a bit too short for it and the 308 i think...) to less than one inch at 200 yards with good loads and a simple free float and bedding.... (...Then again, the 40X had a helluva barrel and good trigger, genuine target gun...).   If a rifle has a good barrel (...and trigger...), it will shoot pretty well "as is".... If ya "free float" it, it will shoot better... If your rifle is shooting groups like a shotgun; dont worry about "free floating".... If it's shooting pretty good groups (...make sure it aint you, in both cases...), it will shoot better with a free float... If you are shootin a minute of angle (... about 1 inch at 100 yards...)... Leave it alone, no matter whether free float or not... Most off the shelf guns (...and some marketed as target or custom....) wont do any better, no matter the treatment (...except a new, high dollar target barrel and trigger, that is...) no matter what people say...    The "heart" of any rifle is the barrel and the trigger... If they aint good, the rifle is "so so" to ratty... If they are good, the rifle is good...    Some of our more precision minded target guys may wade in and disagree on some details here; but i think ive given ya the "readers digest" summary of the free float thing... By the way; if its a AR 10; big kick, big flinch (...some times...) bigger groups... AR 15, should shoot good (...no kick...) smaller groups...   Hope this helps and livens up the conversation a bit... leroy
  6. GK is right on this one; it is, indeed, about "...follow the money..." (...i think...)....  If ya read some of the news articles carefully; you will note that a "legislative staff study" indicates that corporate lawyers for big companies are supposedly recommending against firing folks for cause because of guns in parking lots if no crime has been committed... I don't know whether that is true or not; but it makes political sense in today's "edgy" climate... I do know that the political class likes the support and contribution(s) of the big companies... I think they are like the little "mugwump bird" (...sittin on the fence with their head on on side and their tail on the other; as my sainted mother used to say...) hopin this one will go away and are sending a signal (...i think...) to the big companies to lay low... I say make em take a public stand and vote out the ones ya don't like... The hell with the political class!!   populist leroy, the anti-mugwump activist
  7. Looks ta me like he needs to hunt a new line of work that doesnt involve handling semi-complicated devices...   leroy
  8. It's not unusual for the hand spring to break on these ubertis... We used to shoot the percussion models and had the problem from time to time... We ordered replacement hand springs from Brownells... The leaf spring is a weak point on all single actions; no matter the brand...   leroy
  9. Lager... I understand the concern and the wish to stand with like-minded brothers and sisters, and i full well understand that urge to help advance the reclaiming of our God Given freedoms here in this country as well... I believe that it is a laudable goal and that all responsible citizens should engage in this work... Havin said all that; i would offer this bit of perspective on this whole issue...   Everyone tends to index his memory based on when they start looking into or get active in any issue... I'm old enough to remember when the passing out of handgun permits was handled at the whim and discretion of the sheriff of the individual county sheriff or (...in some states...) the local chief of police...   All this was done in spite of the fact that the Second Amendment was in place... The State of Tennessee (...as did most other states....) had a Reconstruction Era statute that effectively said that:"... the state will regulate the wearing of arms with an eye to keeping the peace...".   That statute wuz baloney; because it was put in place by the ruling political class at that particular time to, in fact, disarm certain of the individual states citizens who had been on the "wrong side of the civil war" or who were political rivals... That amendment to each state's individual constitution(s) was a clear usurping of the original intent of the Second Amendment; and there was no one at that time who did not know that; but that was the mood of Reconstruction politics...   That statute was amended in the eighties and effectively replaced by a "Shall Issue" provision that states, in effect, that the state must issue permits to ANY CITIZEN who is lawfully eligible to lawfully own a firearm... The reason that the "shall issue" legislation was passed in this state and a bunch of others is because like-minded citizens and the NRA successfully campaigned on them... It effectively took the issuance of permits from the hands of an elite local political class (...in many instances...) and made the application and issue process a non-political issue... That was real progress in moving back toward the true intent of the Second Amendment as written in the Bill of Rights (...i think, anyway...)...   There were (...and still are, for that matter...) many in the political class who didn't like this idea; but they had to swallow that particular pill and honor it in order to stay in office... The fact is that the best possible medicine that we gun owners can give any political class operative is a good dose of fear that he (...she, or it...) will be swiftly voted out of office if they don't honor the spirit of the Second Amendment or all the others that we hold dear for that matter...   This approach works no matter what you believe as to concealed carry, open carry, knife rights, on and on... Look at what is going on in Colorado...   I firmly believe that there is a resurgence of a powerful populist movement throughout this country of like minded citizens that believe that the plain reading of the Constitution is, in fact, the law of the land... I believe that the likelihood of any politician or group of politicians taking any constitutional right away from the citizenry is miniscule due to this resurgence; except in the traditionally blue "Boss Tweed" fiefdoms, that is; and they are even loosing in court... Look at what happened in Illinois the other day with the Chicago thing... Even the hippies like Hickenlooper are loosin in Colorado; and i predict that the clowns in Kalefornia will soon suffer the same fate....   People are more informed (...and educated...) today than ever before in the history of this country... They are also "edgy" and for good reason; they are thinkin (...and rightly so, i think...) that "government" is a very potentially malevolent force and that it just may be in the business of limiting rights; not ensuring them...They are also tired of the fiefdoms that used to rule most everywhere... Those fiefdoms are even crumbling in blue places like New York state where you have sheriffs and chiefs of police who are givin the single finger salute to the state government sayin they will not enforce the New York SAFE act... These sorts of things have never happened before in my lifetime and im a semi-old geezer...   To summarize this little rambling; i'm not afraid that any politician (...state or federal...) is gonna take any thing away from me other than my money; because that is the nature of government....  We already have the right to bear arms via the Second Amendment... We need to go about our business exercising this right and act responsibly concerning it... We need to vote out any politician that doesn't see things in clear constitutional terms... period... If we do that, we have noting to fear concerning the "loss of rights"....   On a personal basis, i trust no politician; no matter the political stripe... I watch 'em and reward good behavior and punish bad behavior with my dollars, my affiliations (...think NRA, PACs, or other "gun rights" organizations here...) and my vote... The thing is to keep politicians afraid of the citizenry, not the reverse... In my mind, when we do these things, we are standing together as gun owners and responsible citizens...   leroy
  10.   Try 15.5 grains of 2400 with standard primers and a heavy crimp... It's the old "Keith" load for the 357 mag... The modern loading manuals wont recommend it; but it will work... Use it in the "n" frame smiths, blackhawks, and vaqueros....   leroy
  11. I'm big on the 13 1/2 grain 2400 / 158 grain LSWC in 357 mag brass.. It's accurate, powerful, and soft shooting in a big revolver.... If ya like 38 special brass; use 12.0 to 12.5 and the same LSWC...  It works like a charm... In the 38 special cases it duplicates the old 38-44 hi speed load...  Either of them shoot like a dream in my n frame smiths or my vaquero sheriff...   leroy
  12.   I despise them sons and daughters of satan.... They symbolize, in large part, all that is wrong with amerika...   despisin leroy
  13. Harvey Weinstein is a self-aggrandizing, deluded, narcissistic fool; and Meryl Streep aint far behind.... Let him (... and them...) spend all his (...their ....) money on this foolishness... Who cares what he thinks or does.... The hollywood trash that populates the left coast and new york shouldnt worry anyone... He may not have found out yet; but they dont run anything but the democrat party; and that may be over pretty soon...   noncaring leroy

    Robert Duvall

Robert Duval may, in fact, be the greatest cowboy character of both the twentieth and the twenty first century...   leroy
  15. Id say "...use with confidence"... Looks ta me like a "new agent' is a short 1911... As full of death as a drugstore; and as reliable as a 1911 gets in the right hands of course...   Enjoy... leroy
  16.   Lager... I'm a bit older than most here (....67...)... I wuz raised in the country here in East Tennessee where most of the inhabitants put a pistol in their pockets when they put their overalls or pants on just like you and i would put a pocket knife in ours... Everybody knew they were armed; no one saw the arm until it was needed... That is, in fact, my culture and heritage and im a product of that thinking...   As to the "open carry" thing; i think it is a regionally cultural thing...Where ya have a "cultural melting pot" like metro nashville, knoxville, or any of the other larger metro areas in tennessee where ya have a place like UT and lots of outsiders mixing with the indigenous population; i think ya re swimmin against the tide trying to condition everybody to accept the "open carry" thing...It may be accepted in rural Texas, Arizona, Tennessee, Kentucky, or New Mexico; but not in "metro" melting pot areas; no matter the state...There is simply too much dilution of the indigenous population with outsiders and pilgrims from places that are afraid of guns....   I want to (...as im sure most everybody here does...) to be the best ambassador i can possibly be for people taking responsibility for their own safety and the safety of those in their care... I do that "missionary work" by being as winsome and honest as i can be and by speaking out for and supporting 2A rights without scaring those who im trying to convince to see things the way we see them.... We're all on the same side here...The difference in opinion is the issue of tactics and acceptability of the methods of convincing the UN-convinced or antis that our cause is just; and that, more than that, they should embrace that cause...   Havin said all that; i happen to believe that in lots of places the open carry thing smacks of "in your face" exercise of rights; and no amount of lipstick smeared on that particular pig nor defending of those who choose to do those things will change my mind... The fact is that lots of people are afraid and edgy (...and for good reason, i think...) and they are scared of their neighbors and strangers; especially those toting guns openly who dont happen to be wearin a badge or a uniform...There are, of course, notable exceptions to this (...thank God...) and there are places where this aint a problem... The metro areas of tennessee, however are problem areas in my opinion...   leroy
  17.   Nope.... Exercising a "right" is just that....  You can carry open or not...As for me; I carry a gun to protect myself and others around me from thugs, mother stabbers, and father rapers... It aint a statement of "rights"... Youve already got them to begin with...   Im like some other posters; i believe there is a time and place and method for everything ya decide to do... I prefer concealed carry... Your "skirt blowin up" wuz my way of sayin that...   I was taught about carrying a firearm by a dear old grandfatherly guy who had this to say about carrying a firearm... It goes like this: "...Never let anyone know you are armed until you absolutely have to... Never draw a gun on anyone you dont fully intend to shoot and kill"...    Carryin a gun aint about making a statement about "rights"; its far more than that... It's about self-defense and deadly use of force... There are those who may want to try to bluff and scare bad guys... I think that approach is a bad idea on a bunch of levels; but that's just me... I believe in tactical surprise and the determination to be ready to ventilate them if ya need to...   I aint tryin to beat anyone up; but the second amendment, at it's core, is about the guarantee of the ability to have tools for self-defense... There was a time when every finished gentleman was, in fact, armed; and no one had to tell anyone else he was; everybody already knew it... I think that those times are returning with the "Shall Issue" permit thing... The realization of the need to go armed is the point here; not the method of carry....   leroy
  18. serbu:  RE; this....   "We" didnt allow this if we voted against it.... The courts are the place it gets stopped... The legislative branch is afraid of doin anything... They like their jobs.... The judicial branch will eventually rule on each thing; but that takes time.... It's a calculation by the nobamaites and the political class that they can do anything they are big enough to do...   The way to fix it.... Vote.... That greatest democrat and "progressive' of them all, FDR, did the same thing... There aint nothin new under the sun or on the political scene...   leroy
  19. Windbaggery and calculated unlawful executive action... The calculation is, i think, at least, that ya can get away with anything you are big enough to do and damn the law... its the old "...chicago way..." thing... You will will be ultimately ruled against in court; but it takes time and money to do so; and the effect of these "executive orders" is felt immediately and dutifully praised by your supporters... It's window dressing ALA the "Recess Appointments" thing and the FCC "fairness thing"... Doomed to ultimately fail; but done for the dramatic effect...   By the way, elections mean things and there's an election soon... Vote early and often; the opposition that likes this kind of stuff will...   leroy
  20. Dolomite and Frank are exactly right RE: the setback distance... I generally use 10 feet as the distance for a pistol... The chrony will measure the speed of the powder particles... It evidently cant tell the size of particles, only the speed....   leroy
  21. I'm like Dave on this one... It is against the law in this state to "...go armed..." without a HCP... We can quibble about whether it infringes on your 2A constitutional rights (...i happen to think it does...) but that is the "settled law"... If you open carry in the wrong place (...the mall, the health club walking track, ect...) you can expect someone not to like it and to drop a dime on ya.... That is the nature of things in this society...   f you are out in the field or at the barnyard; no one is probably gonna care....   As the Apostle Paul said: "....everything may be permissible, but not everything is helpful....". This issue is one of them...   Discretion and wisdom always trumps "in your face" exercise of rights... Many see the open carry thing in crowded locations as an "in your face" thing.... It's one thing for your skirt to blow up in the wind every now and then... It's quite another not to wear a skirt at all...   leroy
  22. I've bought from Midway since the beginning.... There is 44 mag and 357 mag brass at my house that is marked "Midway"...I've never had a reason not to like their service nor their prices...   There are basically 3 places i look for reloading components:  Midway, Powder Valley, and Graf and Sons... I buy parts from Brownells or one of the specialty AR houses like Rainier Arms or BCM... Scopes and red-dots from folks like SWFA or Midway...If they dont have 'em; i dont buy them unless i go face to face with someone like our own David... The trick to buying from these guys is to buy a lot when you order; that will take care of the shipping charges... I also never backorder anything... period....   You can rest assured that if ya buy a couple of hundred rounds of anything from anybody, you will pay dearly for it...   Everybody here knows that the reloading components and gun parts business has been out of whack ever since the Nobama Regime has started running the political scene... There is no wholesaler, no matter how large, that has a full inventory of anything; or that has not experienced this dammnable panic buying stampede that has been goin on for the last six or so years...   Larry Potterfield and company (...nor anyone else for that matter...) is not obligated to sell any of this stuff... We need to recognize that we are receiving a service from those who are in the component and gun parts business... If Midway becomes non-competitive, someone else will take their place... That's how the capitalism thing works... They provide a service and you provide the business... Right now things are a bit skewed; but they will finally settle down....   You can rest assured that the "big" ammunition components and gun parts companies could give a damn less if they sell to folks like you and me; they would rather put the components into ammo and sell it to the gubmt or to resellers as part of a "take it or leave it" gun plan ALA what winchester and remington used to do; when they made wholesalers take obsolete or slow selling ammo as part of a package deal in order for the wholesaler to get the guns they wanted...   All in all, the gun and ammo business has always been a bit ratty for the wholesalers...I wouldnt beat them up too bad... If ya dont like 'em; vote with your dollars goin to someone else... That is, in fact, the best way to change attitudes in the selling business...   leroy
  23. Spiffy... Shoot 5 shots, throw out the high and low; then average the remaining 3 and see what ya get...   leroy
  24. There's not "lots" of them... I have one in 44 mag myself... They were built by a japanese maker (...SKB i would bet...) for Browning... They are a true copy of the winchester 92 (...designed by John Browning, not Winchester...) and are very well finished... There evidently were more 44 mags than 357 mags...  Mine shoots like a dream...   Enjoy... leroy
  25. Tanker.... I'm gonna try to make ya feel a bit better... We have a 2001 Lincoln Navigator that is our pet... My wife loves it and she is the principal driver... I always "exercise" (...read that run and idle all our vehicles for 30 or so minutes a day....) when it gets down in the teens; it's just my old time heavy equipment upbringing...   I want the engines and trannys to heat up and have the oil and water circulating everywhere on these ultra cold days... The lincoln started up as it always did and ran beautifully (...like it always does...)... I shut it down in the evening and moved it the next mornin (...the 10 degree one...) and saw what you saw for a few seconds; then the engine cleared up... My guess; the computers and air sensors evidently remember the last settings and it takes a few seconds for them to obtain new data and adjust accordingly...   I think that the real cold weather exasperates these cycles and it may take a bit longer to hit the right point for engine operation on these cold days... They will start and run (...except for my old jeep, that misses the start point every now and then; takin two times to start...); but they need a bit of time to dial in the exact air/fuel combination for the temperature outside...   If ya keep seein it, i would take it to a dealer or a mechanic ya trust... If the warmer weather makes the problem go away and the engine aint missing; i wouldn't worry...   Hope this helps... leroy
