  1. Paul.... Good start here.... Check the whole thread out; it pretty well tells the story of upper east tennessee...   http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/77478-planning-to-re-locate-to-the-johnson-city-area/?hl=leroy#entry1131658   leroy
  2. I'll join the chorus of the "... they won't notice camp..."...   I'm a firm believer in what several other opiners here have said... Most folks are oblivious to those around them until something happens to draw their attention to a particular person; unless it's in a work enviornment...   I don't think there is a 1 in 100 chance of a person spotting exposed clips for an IWB holster, much less putting two and two together to figure out what they are for unless they already know (...E.G... LE or fellow HCP folks...)...   Here's the reason: ....I used to carry a glock 33 or a 27 in the hip pocket of my dungarees in a kydex hip pocket holster... Every now and then, the top of the glock would peek up a bit just below the top of the pocket where ya could look down and clearly see that it was, in fact, a handgun stowed in the dungaree pocket... The only person that ever saw or even acted like he saw that was my 24 year old... He knew what it was and what to look for....   Dont worry about a couple of clips showin...   leroy
  3. I'll chime in with another vote for the Yeasu 270R handheld... Just bought one... It's an excellent radio...    leroy
  4. Bingo!!!.... Clod said it exactly right...   Good job... leroy
  5. I think that from reading the description this is a standard finishing reamer... It will bore the chamber to finish dimensions with standard freebore per the SAMMI dimensions... To add free bore, i think ya will need a different reamer... Havin said all that; the answer, as Dave posted above, is to call or e-mail the Manson folks...    Good luck... leroy
  6. I'll join the opinions of our fellow posters who mention the "two legged" varmits... They are far and away the most dangerous things down here... There are lots of places in the woods around east tennessee and southern kentucky where ya really dont want to go unarmed... Lots of marijuana growing and meth labs; even in the national forest type places...   Im a geezer and i generally dont stray too far from the jeep paths... We do lots of travelling around from north of knoxville up into eastern kentucky and west toward the Cookeville area on the plateau... All this country should be considered "the frontier" and you need to be armed to wander around there...   I always keep a small caliber (...380 or 38 special...) in my pocket and a "big gun" in reach... The "big guns" are large frame smiths (...357 and up; mostly up...) and sheriff model rugers from 357 to 44 special or 45 colt loaded with my usual recipe of a heavy hard cast semiwadcutter and lots of 2400... As much as i love the smiths and the ruger single actions; I've grown extremely fond of a recently acquired glock 20... I like it a lot... Fifteen shots of 10 mm is about a round thru a wheelgun plus two reloads with no fumbling to reload; that is hard to beat...   I'm like several other posters; if i wuz out all nite or in a camp i would pack my AR or a riot shotgun if i could manage it...   leroy
  7. Chuck... Ya blew up my "grey paint" thing...   Keep up the good work... leroy
  8. The thinkin may be that the "stealth gray" mags will paint well (...they will...)... Gray is a neutral base color... Colors sprayed over it will be "true colors"....  That leaves them with two colors, black and gray.... It simplifies the feed materials thing for their manufacturing process is my uneducated guess...   leroy   PS-- I like the FDE mags too....
  9. Like lots of other posters here....  If my pants are on, there is a gun in the pocket... There are always multiple guns in easy reach in the home and in vehicles... When "...on the frontier..." (...as my 24 year old is fond of sayin...); i have at least two firearms in reach; sometimes more...     Remember, ".... it's better to have it and not need it; than to need it and not have it..."; and "...an armed society is a polite society...".      leroy
  10. Thanks for posting this... I think the state of georgia has hit a home run shot with this one...I saw the knoxville local TV news this mornin; and they were whining about it too...   I think the "take away" from all this is that georgia has a pretty good share of single welfare mothers and the usual chorus of the "anti-violence" black movement (...which i find laughable; they need guns more than anybody to protect themselves from their own children and imagined "night riders"... Reference the florida study on self defense shootings...), along with the other children of the forest that are scared of guns and gun owners who are howling to high heaven... They have lost the battle in the legislature and now they are resorting to making the usual claims of "dodge city" and "blood in the streets" to console each other in their loss on this issue...   The fact is that lots of people everywhere are edgy and they are being proactive in protecting themselves and their loved ones from thugs, perverts, dope heads, and "stone cold killas"... I say that's a good thing....Way to go Georgia citizens, legislature, and governor.... Keep up the good work.... Maybe the Tennessee political class will take a lesson from this....   leroy
  11. Mike... Take a look at an old Guns Digest "Cartridges of the World".... The one i have is probably from the 70's....I think it will list some data and bullet weights for the broomhandle.... By the way; i think they are great!!  A real piece of history...   PS--- Googled this:http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?48262-30-Mauser-Load-Data   probably a good place to start... Looks like your buddy needs to slug the barrel to see what size the bullets should be....   Hope this helps... leroy
  12. Sad ta hear it... I still get teary eyed when i think of our old retriever... He's been gone 3 years now...    leroy
  13. 2000 Sahara, 3 inch lift, 35 inch tires, hardtop.... Get's driven every day...   leroy
  14. HEHEHE... Very informative... Thanks for posting this interestin graphic...   leroy

    AR-15 BCG's?

As others have said; and for what it's worth; no mechanical device that has metal to metal wear points will run long unlubricated... If anyone tries to tell you that they will; they are mechanically uneducated or lying (...probably the latter...); especially if they are tryin to sell ya a "new, improved, magic' product for an inflated price...     Will they run smoother with a hard, smooth coating?...Yeah... Will the run long unlubricated?..., no... Ive worked on and been around big machinery all my life... Any of them with rotating or sliding parts need lubrication, or they will soon fail in service... See my quote below from Voltaire.... Trying to run anything with no lubrication is an absurdity....   leroy
  16. As other posters have said.... Why should these folks be entrusted with "the bearing of arms' on duty in other countries; and be disarmed here..?  There should be no places where the citizenry is disarmed...    leroy
  17. Nathan Bedford Forrest was a great man.... He was probably the most powerful post-civil war confederate figure in Tennessee after the civil war... He called out the infamous Governor Brownlow on a variety of punitive policies considered in the Tennessee state assembly after the war... He essentially made them fear for their lives... They were so mindful of his sentiments and positions that they pretty well walked a reasonable line with regard to issues concerning the "punishment" and "second class citizenship" of confederate veterans after the war... He was never a member of the Tennessee state assembly, but his views were well known and completely understood...   Forrest was a brave man  and a genius who knew what he believed in.... Brownlow was a ratty opportunist politician, windbag, and a demagogue who was made afraid by one man; Nathan Bedford Forrest.... Remember, there was no military governor in Tennessee after the civil war... Brownlow was the closest thing that Tennessee had and he was very mindful of what Forrest's positions on policy were... He was  afraid of Forrest, and for very good reason i believe... It is, indeed, fitting, that there is a bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest in the collection of the Tennessee State House...   He was a great man... A military genius, an extraordinarily brave man, a great business man, and a great Tennessean; despite the continuing campaign waged to smear and besmirch him... Remember, history is written by the winners... That means that the truth hardly ever is the "approved version"....    leroy
  18. Been wearin them myself since the early 40's... Ya just get used to em... Welcome to the "infirmed and geezer club"... It's like an older buddy of mine once said several years ago when i met him at a Hardies near his home... "...Come on over and meet my buddies at the Ben Gay Breakfast Club... If ya can't stand the smell of Ben Gay, ya cant stay with us..." he quipped... It turns out he wuz right...   Go forth bravely and do good... Bein a semi-geezer aint easy....   leroy geezer
  19. He's lookin good!!!!  He obviously has a great foster home.... Bet he'll like it here in tennessee!!!   Keep up the good work... leroy
  20. Holder is the "gift that just keeps on giving"; he never disappoints... There's no sentiment for this idiotic idea, except among the "children of the forest" that believe this silliness and the insider business groups that want to harvest the dollars for "exploring this common sense idea"... HEHEHE... If Eric Holder was a white guy he would already have been fired and his boss impeached...   Remember, there is an election in a few months... Vote early and often... The "children of the forest" will...   Votin leroy
  21. I would look around and pick the one i liked... I carry a 238 and a j-frame smith... I really like the 238; and am thinkin about rounding up a 938... All that bein said; i don't think ya could do better than a Kahr 40; i even like the smith M&P Shields....   They are all good... leroy
  22.   Well said!!!   keep up the good work... leroy
  23. Waters...   Thanks for the explanation... I like the magazine setup too... I think ya will be simply amazed at the accuracy... We've got an old 222 remington with a 1 in 12 twist remington proofed barrel that will regularly shoot dime sized groups at 100 yds with anybody's 52 grain match bullets and a case full of BC2 or H335 from a rest with an old lyman 12X scope... I suspect your build will probably do better with the advances in barrels, stocks, parts, and bullets... Three inches at 600 yards aint too slouchy... We've also got an old winchester bolt gun with a 1-12 twist barrel that will about do the same with the 52 grain bullets and a good scope (...a Unertl BV20...)....   Anyway, keep the pictures commin and let us know how the shootin works out... I suspect it will be great....   Thanks again, leroy
  24. I like it... Keep ups posted on the build... Got a quick question for the "more modern" bolt gun building folks here...   Does the heavy duty mag well and trigger guard assembly (...Wyatt's M5 detachable mag trigger guard....) help to stiffen up the action and draw it down into the bedding on the "good" stocks?... It looks ta me like that is what is happening... I'm familiar with the 700/40X type actions and i know they are round bottom with two action screws... In the "old days" we bedded the actions and drew the action screws tight; but the trigger  guard wuz never considered... Educate me a bit on the thinkin here...   Thanks in advance, leroy
  25. Guys... The "dirty secret" on all these leather "stretching compounds"; including shoe stretch that the ladies use is that they are all a mixture of water and a little bit of alcohol (...the alcohol makes the leather dry a bit faster than just water...).... I carry pocket knife sheaths all the time and i use plain warm water to moisten (...turn the leather plumb dark...) them with lukewarm water and let them sit and dry with the knife where i want it... I mold the sheath exactly how i want it with my fingers while the leather is pliable...What happens is that the leather absorbs the water and (...softens...) loosens up; the pistola (...or knife...) outlines the sheath or holster the way ya want it; and ya get the fit ya want... Let it sit overnite and then it will air dry and take the set ya want...   If i had a "tight holster"; i would wrap my revolver or pistola in a ziplock bag, wet the holster down with a microfiber cloth wet down with lukewarm water, press the pistola or revolver into the holster, and let it dry over nite; just like the old timers did to get boots to fit (...jump in the creek, wet the leather, wear the boots until dry, then wax 'em down...)... The leather will stretch and take the set ya want... I always use Snoseal (...or a beeswax based sealer...Snoseal is bees wax based...) on the holster (...or sheath...) after it dries... This always works for me... Havin said all that; the holster guys aint gonna tell ya that; they sell more "magic holster stretch" the other way...   Hope this helps a bit... leroy
