Harwell for Gov? Kiss your 2A desires goodbye...

I'm a bit skeptical about this one... I think the "real" likely candidate is Ramsey... leroy -
Never seen a bullet do that before!

Bike... i couldnt help but notice ya may be a bit miffed... Ya shouldn't be that way; no one here meant to hurt your feelings... You asked a question and got an answer that evidently hurt your feelings... That shouldn't be; because it wasn't meant to be... As to the "all situations are the same" comment; don't take it out of context... The situation is that you are trying to stop a threat quickly; the discussion is how to do it the best... That is, in fact, the situation in every defensive situation... As to the "one gun question"; i (...and others here, i would bet...) have got all kinds... I've spent lots of time burning powder thru rifles, shotguns, and mostly big bore revolvers; and have spent a bit of time experimenting myself... I'm a relatively old geezer and I figure i've burned powder into the 10 thousands, if not hundred thousands of rounds thru some pretty serious ordinance over the last 45 years or so... You are free to believe and do whatever you want concerning your choices, and so am i.... You load your smoke pole the way you want, and i'll do mine the same; but don't get bent because I, or others, don't happen to agree with your methods... Let's agree to disagree on this; and join in the sincere hope than none here have to find out first hand how this shootin another human thing works... leroy -

Bike.... Ya may have missed the point; and i'll confess to not makin it too clear... The point is that three things contribute to incapacitating animals (...yes, and hoodlums...)... Bulllet placement, wound channel width, and penetration; ergo the "white hunter" point... The "white hunters" needed for the great creatures they hunted, often at close range, to be incapacitated quickly... That was accomplished by a quick loss of blood, hitting of a vital organ (... heart...) and penetrating deeply to make the wound channel and blood loss very quick... The sad truth is that it's the same way with humans... God forbid than any of us would have to stop a hoodlum from hurting us or someone in our care.... Forgive us old grumps for being incredulous at the "under-penetration" thing; but it's true... I happen to be in the camp that believes that there is plenty of snake oil baloney out there conjured up by the ammo folks to sell "premium self defense" rounds... Hollow point rounds have been around a long time, you could even buy them when i started reloading in the seventies; and, yes, they were available for both pistol and rifle calibers... The fact is that there is nothin new under the sun; but lots of folks seem to be enamoured by these "advanced" bullets... As others have opined, the Glasser slug has been the only real breakthru in self-defense ammo... The "new, improved hollowpoints are simply old wine in new bottles... The problem with hollow points is that they can mushroom too quickly and do the "flesh wound" thing... Ya simply cannot deliver "flesh wounds" and efficiently stop whatever varmint ya are shootin at; be it four legged or two legged... Michael Brown was shot 7 times if i remember right... He ran away from a cruiser, turned around, and almost made it back to the cruiser before he fell... I'm willin to bet that he was shot with 40 caliber "magic bullet" hollowpoints... By the way, "all situations ain't different"... Sadly, they are all the same --- you are tryin to stop the threat... That may mean quickly stopping folks that may be high on dope or just plain mean is serious business... At the end of the day, that's what this is all about... Here's hopin that no one has to face that terrible task.... Forgive us for being insensitive... We were, however, trying to be truthful... leroy -
Gun Oils/Lubes- very impressive test-46 products tested
leroy replied to Erik88's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Enfield said a mouthful here... Remember this... There are three kinds of lubricants... Petroleum based (...mineral...), fat based. (... .animal lard/soap...) and synthetic... They all do the same thing... A good one should do two things... Lubricate and displace moisture... Some do better than others... Balistoil, for example, will not do a good job of displacing moisture (...i know, i use it on our cap and ball revolvers; so i wipe them down with WD40 or something handy, then finish with Balistol...)... An ole buddy of mine who is a world class gunsmith told me one time when i asked him "what was the best lubricant for guns":..."...The one on sale at Brownells..."... I think he is right... Buying lubricants for your cherished smoke pole is a lot like picking your favorite beer, beer wench, girlfriend, or wife; it's a personal choice.... Pick the one you like, and don't be too worried about the "next best" one to come out... It's all marketing hype, man.... leroy -

Caster is right.... Bullet diameter and penetration is preferable to some foolish baloney about minimum penetration.... There's a reason why the african white hunters used big, powerful rifles on dangerous game... Big wound channel and extensive penetration... bawana leroy -
Which do you prefer 9mm or 38 special for SD?
leroy replied to RAJBCPA's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
There are plenty of folks ln the graveyard from bein shot with both 38 special and 9 mm rounds... That bein said, there is no "best round".... There is the "one you like" round... Shot placement trumps everything... A 22 in the eye will kill ya just as dead as a 50 caliber... Pick out the one you like and dont believe the "fan boy" baloney about "stopping power"... There aint no magic rounds... I carry a sig 238 380 all the time... I like the "j" frame smiths loaded with the heavy 158 grain semiwadcutters as well as anything for CCW... If ya are a bit more nervous get ya a glock 33 or a glock 27 like i do from time to time... Plenty of rounds in case ya have to shoot it out with the local MS13 boys... I would be carryin a single stack 45 acp if i could find a "lightly used, lovingly cared for" one at a decent price... Don't worry about the caliber, worry about marksmanship... leroy -
I'll join the chorus of those who like the Ruger MKs... They are the best 22 for the dollars invested of any 22... We've got one that has had literally thousands of rounds shot thru it... They are a great thing, and they are an excellent training pistol for a "normal" sized pistol... They are, indeed, a real "poor man's target 22"... leroy

Greg.... I like it.... A "real" 45.... Looks good...!!! leroy

Smith Model 25... Got two of 'em... Never any problems.... Ruger "200th year" Blackhawk 45ACP convertable... NEVER any problems... All our colts from an old military to a couple of series seventies... No problems with good magazines.... You will find that 95% plus of the 45 problems are due to bad magazines... Keep good ones... Fix any bad ones; or throw them away, no matter the name on them... Then go find some good ones.... leroy

When ya build 'em, ya get what ya want... The barrel and the trigger (...and with the AR; possibly the bolt carrier...) is the heart of an AR ... Buy the best barrel, trigger, and bolt ya can; then pick up all the other "goodies" ya like... Most all machines are the sum of their parts (...assuming they are assembled correctly and in specification...)... It's been my experience in the rifle and pistol business, that warranties dont mean much... I'm an old geezer, been shootin since the 60's; never had a warranty claim... It's a testament to haw good the parts are and how well they are assembled... leroy

maroon... We are "j" frame junkies, and always keep several around... The lightest, smallest, internal hammer "no snag" in the S&W line is the model 442... We've got one and it has (...as most all j frames have...) a heavy trigger pull... The reason for this appears to be that the "j' frame is just "small" and the lever arms in the trigger system are smaller than their bigger brothers; plus the "j" frames use a wound hammer spring... The good news is that any of your ole buddies that are S&W gunsmiths can fix this in short order... There are some trigger kits that will lighten the trigger pull on the double action (...the only way ya can shoot a 442...)... I always have one of my buddies do a trigger job on every "j" frame we get... I always keep an all steel variant of the "j" frames around as well.... Our latest one is a model 36 with a 2 inch barrel and a round butt... My hands are a bit meaty, and i always put some sort of compac grip on these little beasts... I always load my "j" frames with a plus "p" 158 grain lead semiwadcutter load... Revolvers of late have fell out of favor with many "gun know it alls"; principally because of the round capacity (...5 rounds in the "j" frame...), but they are a great thing... A revolver is extremely reliable and the operational characteristics are intuitively obvious... The only down side is the width of the cylinder; but that ain't a big deal with the right holster... I've front pocket carried them in a good holster, hip pocket carried them (...my favorite with carhartt dungarees...), and carried them in a jacket pocket... It all works like a charm... As i remember, the 442 weighs 15 ounces and the model 36 weighs 19.5 ounces... They have been around as "j' frames since the early 1950's and as the older "I" frame before then (...abeit in a 38 S&W and 32 long calibers...)... They were, in fact, the "standard" for small, powerful hideout handguns within the LEO and "outlaw" communities... You are well armed if you can use a "j" frame smith double action with a reasonable load... As you can tell, i like 'em a lot.... leroy

Question Regarding a Possible Situation
leroy replied to 101's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Some sage words from my long gone over the sunset hill irish granny.... ".... Foolish people do foolish things...". Don't be drawn down to their level, no matter the provocation (...the bad drivin phillistine harlot...)... I never engage in shouting matches with anyone except my dear wife; and i usually loose them... Don't banter words with a fool (... the kid...); calmly tell him to get out of your face and walk away... Don't let your kids see you turn from their dad whom they love dearly to a hoodlum (...as defined by society, and not necessarily right...) over some "in a hurry" b**ch and a foolish bratty kid... I bet everyone would calm down if ya called for the local security officer.... leroy -
I used to travel and work down that way some... Beautiful country and pretty quiet... It's also close to Rock Island State Park and Great Falls Dam... A truly beautiful place... The down side is it ain't close to nothin... leroy
