Knox County Homeowner Shoots Intruder
leroy replied to McGarrett's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I'm quite frankly amazed that folks are so concerned about this keeping of info quiet thing, and so concerned about "reprisals" and "revenge"... It is a given that "bad people" are "bad people"; and that the news media is "irresponsible"... They always have been... I'll also add that that the "bad population" seems to be a bit emboldened, and that the media is stupider and more careless than ever before... The whole idea of taking responsibility for your protection and the protection of those in your care is to, in fact, be ready and willing to provide that protection should the need (...God forbid...) ever arise... I grew up with men (...and women...) that lived that way every day... They knew who the bad folks were and confronted them head on... They were not looking for trouble, but they were perfectly capable of solving the trouble should it arise; just as the guy in the news article we are talkin about did... I understand being a bit edgy... I'm edgy too... That's why im armed to the teeth... I'm a 68 year old gimped up old geezer that is a coumadin patient... Most anybody could hurt me bad or kill me; they just aint goin to if i can get my hand in my pocket or to my big pistol or shotgun; and they damn sure aint gonna hurt my family or those in my care if im around to prevent it... The moral of this little story is that you better not be willin to finish off those commin to steal your stuff, rape your wife and children, and kill you if you are afraid of "reprisals" and "revenge"... You better be ready to string 'em as ya catch 'em; or just let them take your stuff, rape your family, and kill you if you are worried about "reprisals"... ...I may be a bit simple minded; but i just cant wrap my mind about that kind of thinkin... Here's hopin that no one ever has to go thru that sort of horrific trouble; but it's far better that you finish them; than that that they have their way and finish you, your family, and whoever else is standin around because you are worried that they have buddies that may take a "reprisal" or "revenge" on you; should you live thru the first round of trouble... I would rather be dead, than to know that i stood by and let family or those in my care be murdered and pillaged while i stood around worrin about the current malefactor's kin or gang brothers commin after me later.... Ya better decide in your "heart of hearts" what ya are willin to do ahead of time... When they are kickin in the door, or killin you wife and kids, there ain't time for makin these sort of decisions... Ya better decide ahead of time what ya are gonna do... I have; and i would suggest that you do the same... I say..."..."the hell with the first bunch and whatvever bunch comes next..."... Your mileage may vary... leroy -

Hate ta hear it... The problem is that police records (...as others have said...) are public documents... We can quibble about "irresponsible reporting" and broadcasting by the media far and wide, but ya cant take the public record thing away... leroy -

As to the exact location thing; it dont matter... This guy just finished off one thug that tried to break in his home... Good for him... I bet any other potential malefactors will think twice before botherin this guy... I dont much believe in the "revenge" thing... People are too self centered and dopy for that sort of thing today... leroy -
Great job on the blade and the scales... leroy

To add a bit to the conversation, there are lots of companies that are having the "chinese" manufacture knives... Take a look at the Kershaw-Emerson stuff... They are very well made knives (...i've got several of 'em...)... The "chinese" steel is as good as anyone else's mid range stuff... The main difference between the "chinese" stuff and the "american" stuff at the same steel type is zero for most people... Makin steel is alot like makin a cake... Put the right stuff in, the right cake comes out... As to the workmanship, it's first class... The only difference is the difference between $35 and about $100 for the "chinese" vs "american" build... leroy

This may be a minority opinion; but i don't care what happens in Baltimore... A quick check of the history of Baltimore will tell ya that it has been under Democrat control since 1967... That means that for 48 years the "best and brightest" including the one they have now have been in firm control of this cesspool... I think it's interestin that since 2007, they have had two black women mayors... I thought that this bunch would have turned Baltimore into a paradise by now... I guess not... There have always been two Baltimores; the one downtown around Fort McHenry and the harbor basin, and everywhere else... It looks pretty dangerous to me in both Baltimores... Looks ta me like the citizens of Baltimore deserve better than this; but they are gonna have to change their attitudes and votin habits... non carin leroy

Dear folks...( have recently come into possession of a Glock 20 (...thanks Matt...)... I am thinkin about putting a set of Dawson Fiber Optic sights on it; but im kinda concerned about the fiber optics strands stayin put in the sights under recoil... Have any of you all experienced the loosening of the fiber optic insert in these sights...? Are there any other fiber optic sights you all like better than the Dawsons...? Thanks in advance... leroy

If ya want to learn how to shoot and shoot well, pitch a bunch of clay birds out on a berm about 30 or 35 yards away and go ta shootin with your postola... If it's a rifle, stretch it out a bit... The clay birds will break when hit well and then start on the smaller pieces... leroy

Home Defense Shotgun - What is your take
leroy replied to Pete123's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Pete... I like Dave's post and reasoning... I'm a shotgun junkie and have a pile of pump "riot guns", includin a Browning BPS in the bedroom... There is a reason why shotguns were used in the old days and right up until today by those in the killin business... They work and work very well... If ya look at the shooting data, a shotgun trumps most everything in one shot stops if ya do your part... I like the "stayin put" idea... Let 'em come to you... That's exactly my home plan... I like buckshot of any flavor, from 000 to #4 buck... leroy -
I'm a Hustler fan myself... The Fastrak is a great "residential" mower... Well-built and easy to service... leroy

Steel and all... I've waited a bit to post this little blurb because it sometimes stirs up a hornet's nest between the few geezers among us and the "cocked and locked" crowd... In my younger days, i carried a GM and a light weight commander quite a bit... I didn't like the "cocked and locked" thing because i had occasionally seen the safeties knocked off the 1911's when the safety detents were a bit weak... I never believed much in the idea that a mechanical safety was a foolproof way to keep an accidental discharge from happenin... As the great Elmer Keith opined, "safeties should not be trusted"... I always carried my 1911's on the half-cock or with the hammer down, because the 1911 has a rebounding firing pin... This is an old style form of carry now considered right up there next to blasphemin the great John M Browning by the "cocked and locked" 1911 nazis among us (...you know who you are...HEHEHE...)... The problem with this mode of carry wuz that it you were unfortunate enough to drop your 1911 on a hard surface, there was a chance of a discharge, and that, in fact, did happen... It caused Colt to introduce the firing pin lock in the series 80 pistolas... On a personal basis, i dont like the "cocked and locked" carry unless the safety detent is real crisp... My little Sig 238 has that feature, but it also has holster covering the safety, which i think helps ensure that the safety cant be accidentally knocked off... The point of this little blurb is to make the blasphemous pronouncement that a 1911 is not as mechanically advanced from a safe operation standpoint as the striker fired pistolas like the Glock and others... The 1911 is a great pistola, and will make any finished gunman (...or woman...) a great tool for defense... As Dave (...and others...) have said, ya need to absolutely know how it works mechanically and how to handle it no matter the circumstances... Above all, dont drop it... leroy

TN Gun Deaths exceed car deaths in 2013 ..... (right....)
leroy replied to R_Bert's topic in General Chat
Red meat for the children and creative accounting... It means nothing... No one is gonna give a damm about what these clowns think (...including the Tennessean...)... Folks are edgy and they aint gonna go for gun control anywhere... leroy -

I've never seen a good 308 that wouldnt shoot in the range ya are seein; and a varmiter barrel Remington 700 is a good one... As others have opined, if ya stretch it out a bit to about 300 or so yards ya may be pleasantly surprized... Handloading will help ya dial it in further; as will bedding the action and seeing to it that the barrel is free floated... Have fun... leroy

I might have to eat my words about .380....
leroy replied to daddyo's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I may be misunderstandin a bit... I wasn't advocating carrying of a larger 380 nor debating the merits of one caliber over the other... I wuz explainin that in the old days they were some larger 380's; and that some folks were comfortable carryin them as both backups and primary guns, depending on the situation... I carry a small 380 in my pocket just like a pocket knife... I keep a 10mm glock 20 pretty close...Sometimes i've even got a 44 special sheriff's single action or a 357 sheriff single action around; or even an "N" frame smith... There are lots of ways to skin the proverbial cat... leroy
