  1.   Eight to eight and a half grains of Unique and anybodies hard cast bullet 250 grains and over will shoot just fine... These guys are a bit more expensive, but their bullets are great... They are good and soft, so they will upset in the barrel... Very accurate shooters ... http://rimrockbullets.net/index.php   If ya really want ta have some "authentic" loads... Load these bullets with black powder, but read up on the loading procedures first... We used the rimrock bullets with the black powder loads... They are great... Big "kaboom" and plenty of billowing white smoke... Real old time stuff here...   leroy
  2. Wing... Keep a close watch at Cherrys... They had the inside track for years on Colts from the factory... They probably know as much as anybody about them and their inventory of them constantly changes... Call them and talk to 'em about the generations... They will be glad to help ya... There are also some really good books on this subject, but the titles elude me now... We've got one in the "archives" somewhere...   As to the "generation" thing; heres the "Reader's Digest Summary"...   First generation... 1873 to 1941... The "original"... Most of 'em wore out .. The ones that are left are likely put togethers...  Idiotic pricing... Buyer beware ....Plain serial number (...numbers only...)   Second generation... 1956 to 1974... Greatest of the SSA's (...i think, at least...)... Great workmanship... Stratospheric pricing... They were expensive years ago... Iv'e never seen a good second generation sell for less than $2500, and that wuz years ago... A good clean one in an original box will drive ya to your knees (...they do me, at least...)... The serial numbers (...i think...) begin with an "SA" prefix, then the numbers.. We have a low S/N New Frontier that i gave $800 for "no questions asked" ... It was bought from an ole buddy of ours probably 10 or so years ago; and the New Frontiers are considered "lesser children" by the real colt collectors...   Third generation...1976 til now... This is what the colt custom shop builds... Our's were the 1976..1978 models... They are good and semi affordable... The only big change was a solid cylinder bushing (...which the colt purists hate...) and different threads on the barrel frame assembly... The purists will tell ya they are inferior in quality to the second generations, and there is a grain of truth in that pronouncement... We've got several that have been worked over and they are the equal of any second generation ive ever seen; and i've handled quite a few...  The serial numbers (...i think...) end with an "SA"; the numbers come first   For the money ya are gonna have to spend on a SAA, i would always handle and authenticate it... There are plenty of first generation "put togethers out there", and there used to be more than a few dishonest SAA traders...   Hope this helps a bit... leroy
  3. Wing... We have several third generation Colt's and a second generation New Frontier... (...the first issue of 'em...)... The third generations are generally reasonably priced if ya call $1200 up "reasonable" (..i have trouble calling this reasonable, but that's just me...)... Ours were bought in the "old days" when ya could find 'em... If ya want a real Colt, its hard to beat the guys at Cherry's Fine Guns... We like 'em and do business with them from time to time... Here's their website url... http://cherrys.com/    leroy
  4. Have ya all tried Graf and Sons for reloading stuff... I like Powder Valley too... Hate ta hear the bad stuff about Midway... I've got "Midway" stamped brass from the long ago when Midway did what they said they would do...   leroy
  5.   Yep... They are an exact copy... We have a pair of 36 navies that are essentially the same as a SSA... The Cimmarons are an exact copy of the originals... The 36 navies are the best balanced SA revolver i've ever handled, and we have the "real colts" too...   leroy
  6. Wing... We have several Cimmaron percussion revolvers... They are excellent revolvers... Cimmarons are made by Uberti (... Or used ta be...)... The only qualm I have with them is cosmetic... The frames aren't really cased; so ya don't get the beautiful cases colors (... By the way, neither is Ruger... They are chemically colored to get the colors...)... We have "real colts, as well as the cimmarons and Rugers... For the money, I don't think ya can beat the Cimmarons... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  7. Thanks Raildog....   We are railroad photography guys and railroad history buffs... It's sad to see folks loose their jobs and see these once geat lines shut down or go away...   leroy
  8. ET and all... I've been patiently waitin for this Frontier Firearms thing to come up... As the God Man said: "... And you will know them by their works..."...    I have refrained from sayin bad things about the folks at Frontier, not because they weren't true; but because i figured it would come out sooner or later... This overbearing, dismissive attitude has been goin on for the last 12 years or so; at least... Looks like the chickens have come home to roost...   My particular run in was with the harpy that is evidently the owner's wife (...or girlfriend...)... She, was (...or still may be...) either a sheriff's deputy or policeperson in the kingston/roane county territories... She used her loud "command voice" on me over presumin to take the ejector rod out of a used Ruger SA to inspect the barrel and verify the cylinder was marked to the gun (...it was used...)...She evidently thought i was about to steal a part or wasn't smart enough to put it back together correctly... The whole thing smacked of a police encounter with a fugitive...   I had my then 12 or 14 year old son with me, so i didn't paint a "verbal picture of what i thought of her and her "command voice" and retail skills were at the time... I politely handed "the weapon" back reassembled correctly and told her where she could put it...I also reminded her that i wasn't her dog and didn't appreciate being hollered at like one...  One of the guys tried to smooth it over with me, but to no avail, as you all can tell... It is beyond me why anyone would do business with this trash...   I have not darked the door of their establishment since that time; and i will not in the future... Further, ive regularly told this little story to everyone ive met in a face to face situation when the subject of Frontier Firearms comes up...Now, all of you who read this post know it too..     In the interest of "full disclosure"; i never had any trouble with the guy i took to be the owner or any of his employees... This monstrous harpy was the only one that i ever saw being rude, and i had seen it a time or two before our particular run in... I figure the owner is henpecked and is afraid to call her out... I say the hell with the both of them... Her for bein an overbearing jackassette and him for bein a weenie... They dont have anyting i need...   leroy
  9. Pretty stuff...   leroy
  10. Why the hell would anyone put up up with this...?     leroy
  11. Great job... The holster looks first rate...   leroy
  12. Comm... We have a dillon 650 that i bought from an old buddy that wuz downsizin and tired of reloading... I like em, and their customer service is excellent...   The main problem with progressives is that ya need to settle on a recipe that ya are gonna use and load it... If ya do, ya can pile up bunches of ammo... If ya are a tinkerer and experimenter, ya just as well have a single stage...   That bein said, we have several "standard" loads that we load a minimum of about 500 rounds for on the dillon...  They are great for straight side pistol cartridges, but lots of folks load 223 on em too... I never have...   The most dangerous thing with a progressive is powder charging, so ya need to use a powder recipe that will allow you to spot an overcharge... We have double charged some cases; but i always select a recipe that will overflow the case if ya have a double charge... We also use a powder check die in the station to make sure as well... Lots of folks make them and they are a valuable tool...   The thing about the dillon is that you can set up your dies in a die head and just change them out when you change calibers...Another down side is if ya change bullet designs within a caliber, ya need to re-set the seating and crimping dies... That's why ya need to settle on the bullets and recipes that ya load... Initial set up is a pain with these things, so it's handy to be able to lock down the dies on the die head after ya get things the way ya want them and just change them out with the change in calibers...   Finally, the speed of a progressive is overhyped...Speedy reloading is dangerous reloading, i think... I've never loaded 500 rounds of anything in an hour... It's more like two hours...   Hope this gets ya ta thinkin a bit...  I'm sure others will chime in on this...   leroy

Comms.... Gonna try ta answer your questions with stuff directly from your questions below; but first a bit of background.... Ive shot and reloaded for the sig for several years... Got a Glock 33 and a "compact" (...4 inch bbl...) glock with standard glock barrels... Here goes:     Hope this helps a bit...   leroy
  17. Several things to consider..... Ramsey has influence to a point... I think the reality is that Haslam is the problem, not Ramsey... More than that, Beth Harwell is a problem too, but for a different reason... I think Haslam is thinkin senatorial and presidential thoughts... He has to look reasonable to everybody on both sides of everything... Ramsey is, I believe, Haslam's "lap dog"... I think he is bought and paid for in as far as Haslam is concerned, and, as such, will not do anything that smacks of clashing with him on anything... Said another way, he is doin all he can within the constraints he has on him... Sadly, that is the state of politics most everywhere, everybody is beholden to someone... The fact is also that the Tennessee Board of Regents is made up of a bunch of rich political activists and donors... Not all of them see guns as the answer to this problem... The fact is that rich folks by and large run the gubmt, like it or not... This campus carry thing has a set of formidable adversaries and Ramsey aint the main one... To say he is is to ignore lots of things that simply can't be ignored... I think the "campus carry" thing will have to be decided in the courts... It lets the political class off the hook... leroy Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  18. The fact that you responded means that you did, indeed, "...get my ramblings..."... You were offended... I called no names, yet ya felt the need to "respond"...    Now to the details...   RE:  This...    As to the first sentence... Glad ta hear it... Actions speak louder than words... I'll reserve judgement and watch a while... Up ta now ya been pretty hard on the "Judeo-Christian" ethic... It's covered in the First Amendment...    As to the second sentence... Ya could have fooled me... Look back thru the hot button threads and see what ya wrote... This is just the latest one...   As to  "...as you would like to imply..."... Ya never miss a chance to either bash or berate the believers among us... Your words in various posts have implicated you... I would think a lot more of you if ya actually did the "...live and let live thing...".... Ya might consider it...    leroy
  19. Hozzie...   Here's what you said in the first post....     Here's what you said on post #12....       Again... "No good deed goes unpunished"... There's no way for you to be satisfied... My point is that he, a "ratty polititian" is helpin all he can...    Re-read this from post #11:     RE:   This...   I got no problem with ya not believin... The First Amendment covers this as well... My point is that ya cant seem to leave it alone... Ya wear this "no god, no Christian thing" on your sleeve for a past time, and seem to snipe and whine about anyone that is... Looks ta me like the old "double standard" to me... While i'm on the subject;  RE:  ... "...completely ridiculous and offensive..."; i find the "no good deed goes unpunished" and the "Christian" thing "... completely ridiculous and offensive..." myself, so we are even now... We both think eachother are "completely ridiculous and offensive"...   The point here is that ya cant seem to be placated nor satisfied... Ramsey stands up for a 2A issue and ya still bitch...  Ya bitch more anytime the word "Christian" or "Judeo-Christian" is mentioned... That's the point...   By the way,  i never claim "victim status" and neither should anyone else...   Thats what i think... We can agree to disagree on this but i reserve the right to have an opinion too..   leroy
  20. I think the "wet tumblin" thing is the ultimate way to clean brass... It would be ideal for the black powder cartridge shooters among us...   leroy
  21. I'm continually amazed at the "no good deed (...or spoken truth...) goes unpunished in some quarters here... Ron Ramsey told the truth...   My opinion is that it would have been better received if he had said "... Students should arm themselves..." instead of "....Christians should arm themselves..."... It's truly a fascinating phenomenon....I dont like career polititians any more than anyone else here does... I guess that ya could say im one of "...The Biggest Haters..." here... The sobering truth is that... A... He told the truth even though he is a "ratty polititian'... You need to take that at face value... B... The colleges are, in fact, a big lobby, and they have great influence and sway in this and other states... They get bowed to... Ramsey aint the cause of that, the idiot "educrats" are... They are the problem... not Ramsey...    I cant help but think (...im very suspicious, ya understand...) that some folks who are vocally decryin this alleged "hyprocracy" on Ramsey's part; are really bitchin and are "repulsed" that he used the word "Christian"... Saying, in effect, that "Christians" are "lesser children" and, as such, are not "worthy" of saving... You know who you are...   Remember this, the First Amendment allows for freedom of expression of religious beliefs (...or the lack of them...)... The Second provides that freedom of expression (...and all the ohers...)...   That is all...   watchin leroy
  22. Tom Threepersons... The greatest of the great.... Check this out at El Paso Saddlery...   http://www.epsaddlery.com/pc-65-12-1920-tom-threepersons-2-to-7-12-barrels.aspx   Im a big fan of the threepersons style for a 1911 and SAA... Used 'em both... Buy without hesitation...   leroy
  23. You aint the only one that thinks this is a very distinct possibility brother... There are some mighty interestin, strange, and hideous things goin on out there that we've not seen before in this country...
  24.   If ya like the Fenix PD35, ya might want to check one of these out... I've got one and i like it as well as the Fenix (...i like them too...)... They are on sale here... http://www.batteryjunction.com/nitecore-p12-smo-xml2.html   I do a lot of business with these guys, they are straight and these lights are good ones... Buy without hesitation...   leroy
  25. I'll add to the chorus... I dont think ya can go wrong with a Franchi or a Remington 1100... i like the recoil operated light weight Franchi a bunch... I've seen lots of powder burned thru them...   leroy
