We've used the Georgia Arms 148 grain wad cutters in 38 special over the years and found it to be good stuff. It's loaded to target velocities; but its supposed to be. I like it. We've probably burned up 200 to 300 rounds. Hope this helps. Leroy

I feel I have a stake in this conversation because of my participation in the “Three Year Old with the Teddybear†thread; and I am, in fact, in favor of profiling. Those who believe in “no profiling†for the most part would have you believe that no people groups are exempt from the “terrorist†label. The current system in use in by the TSA is built on the proposition that “all are equally suspect.†I simply don’t believe that and neither should you. This proposition flies in the face of the American proposition of “innocent until proven guilty†and willfully ignores the facts of the current situation. The facts are, as others have pointed out, that middle eastern men of known nationalities between the ages of about 18 and 40 carried out the attacks on the Twin Towers. They were muslim extremists. I will grant that you cannot tell if folks are “extremists†by looking at them; but you can (….and the Israelis do…) get some idea of what they are up to by interviewing them before they board their flights. I firmly believe that we should quit playing this grotesque game in which we purport to have the high moral ground because we “don’t profile†and adopt some variation of the Israeli system. Now to the question of “Christian†terrorists. Daniel would have you believe that there are, in fact, “Christian terroristsâ€; and, because of this, all are suspect. I will grant that over the years there have been groups who purported to be Christian that engaged in “terrorist acts†(…if you extend the definition of “terrorist acts†passed the definition needed for the TSA; specifically airborne terrorist acts….). The acronym “TSA†stands for “Transportation Security Administrationâ€. That means that the TSA is tasked with “airborne†safety. I will also grant that not all muslims are potential terrorists. I don’t remember anyone saying they were. The problem with this whole TSA “screening†issue is that it gets worse and worse, and it takes on all the political facets that are present in our society. The “anti-racists†would have you believe that you are a “racist†if you look to race as a “profiling elementâ€. The “nationalists’ would have you believe that if you look to “nationality†that that is “non inclusive†and “elitistsâ€. The fact is that these very two “profiling elements†would have stopped the Twin Towers tragedy. The problem, at least in my mind, seems to be that we seem to be completely willing to ignore these two factors because we are afraid of being called “racists†and “non-inclusivistsâ€. We somehow believe that we have the “moral high ground†because we “don’t profileâ€. The fact is that we lost the “moral high ground†a long time ago. The fact is that we are at war with muslim extremism. Muslim extremism is being carried out by a specific demographic of the people of the earth; and to believe otherwise is foolish. I believe that it is obscene and grotesque to allow the things that we are seeing in this country with regard to “purported airline safety†and not be agitated to the point of wanting something done about it. I do not believe that we ought to spend our time patting down white three year olds with teddybears, eighty year old white women, cancer survivors, and nuns. The fact is that it is much easier to pat this demographic down to demonstrate that “we don’t profile and we are therefore doing our job†than it is to do the right thing and deal with the inevitable howl that will come from those who feel they have been singled out because of their specific demographic. This has already happened with several “Muslim Clericsâ€; we just seem to have forgotten it in this discussion. The firestorm that is brewing now in regard to the TSA is exactly what needs to happen. It is high time that people got tired of a bunch of politically correct bureaucrats and chumps subjecting a sector of the population of this country to the idiotic procedures that are in use now. The fact is that things need to change and I believe they will. Another fact to ponder is that as long as we live in a relatively free society, there is the danger that a bunch of thugs may kill themselves and you to prove a point. Folks that fly are keenly aware of this and have chosen to take the risk in order to get where they want to go in a relatively short time. I’ll close with this and stir up a separate hornet’s nest. It is my firm belief that a “moderator†should be just that; a “moderatorâ€. That says to me that when you actively take up the conversation in a thread, you move from being a “moderator†to being a “member†and, as such, other “moderators†should become the custodians of propriety and objectivism; and therefore, become the “new moderator†of that specific thread. I believe that when you use both the latitude to post and lock threads you are in effect becoming a “super opiner†with absolute power to say what you want to say without danger of any rebuttal (…responsible or irresponsible…). I think you and others ought to think about that a bit. I fully understand that there is “no guarantee of freedom of speech hereâ€. All posters are to abide by the rules and are subject to discipline and censure. Ideas (…both good and bad…) generally don’t need censure. Personal attacks do. Remember this, the original posters didn’t make the “Teddy Bear†thread a hornet’s nest; cl did by calling out everyone who didn’t agree with him. That’s how I see things. Leroy

So had a strange "happening" the other day!

I never open the door to anyone i dont know without my pistola in my hand, discretely pulled around out of sight. I'm also fond of going out another door and walking up on whomever is tapping on the door. Your wife was right. Leroy -

This is the answer!!! Dont worry about the water and the soy; worry about the "weenies" and agents of the liberal "intelligencia" taking away the little boy's capguns, trucks, boxing gloves and bulldozers; and the little girl's dolls. Also, parents; dont let these effeminate weenies win the war for the mind. The fact is that you have a right to play in the dirt, play "army", play "cowboys and indians", self defense, outrage at bullying (...accompanied with the appropriate fisticuffs if needed...), swinging on grapevines, playing with dolls, play football, play baseball, and make mudpies if you like. Every boy in this country should be given a copy of Jeff Cooper's book "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Tell the Truth"; and ever little girl should watch the "Princess Diaries" with their mom and read a copy of "Little Women". Lastly, parents, dont act like a "wuss" and most likely your kids wont either. Leroy

Mav:____________ I'm glad youve joined our little band. Shooters can be an interesting (...and entertaining ...) breed sometimes. There are pockets of great "brand loyalty" amongs some of our little band (...my Colt shoots better than your Doublestar...). There is also a bit of great caliber loyalty (....my 50 beowulf shoots harder than your "mousy" 556...). You get the picture. For the most part, these are "friendly jabs at buddies", but they can get very entertaining (...and pationate...). My personal favorite is the "caliber war" that goes on from time to time (...my 45 auto will shoot better than your "mousy" 9mm...); or the ole your plastic glock aint as good as my 1911 (...or viceversa...). The great thing is, that it most always is all in fun; and it is always entertaining! Again, welcome to our little band of opiners and scholars! Keep up the good work. Leroy

To add to this conversation a bit; some folks add the ability to search (...give unannounced drug tests, ect...) as a condition of employement. They tell you about it and you sign on as a "condition of employement". Any breach (...by you, of course...) is grounds for dismissal. I would carefully read everything i signed during the employment process plus all the "manuals" they have laying around that they refer too to check this stuff out. leroy

Lester:________________ Noticed your comment RE: your old truck. Got an old 99 suburban (....just 238K miles on it...) sitting in my backyard--same problem as you. Here is a pretty neat solution: Go down to the nearest Advance Auto Parts and get one of these little jewels: Schumacher 1.5 amp battery charger/maintainer (...link here: Advance Auto Parts: 1.5-Amp Trickle Charger/Maintainer by Schumacher - Part SE-1-12S____ ...) and hook it up. I got mine (...its a Battery Tender Brand...) from these guys (...link here: Deltran Battery Tender Plus, battery tender plus, ...). They work like a charm. All ya need to remember is to UNPLUG everything when ya take off in the ole Astro. Hope this helps, and good luck with your purchase of the new jeep; they are a great thing!! Leroy

TSA Out of control: Takes 3year toddler teddy bear and requires pat down

Al:______________ The first semiauto 45 ACP pistol that i ever shot with a polymer frame was a full size USP. They are a great thing. They are extremely accurate and well built. All this from a confirmed 1911 and big frame smith snob. They are well worth the $499.00 in my opinion. Hope this helps. Leroy

I agree wth several other posters who talk about the pump gun. The pump was the first successful "modern" HD shotgun, starting with the great Winchester Model 94 hammer gun of WW1 fame. I also think that cost is a factor too; semiautos tend to cost a bit more and are harder to add "extended" magazines to. After having said all that; I really like the old Browning Auto 5 s and the lightweight Franchi (...they are recoil operated...). We have a Browning A500 (...it's a recoil operated type semiauto too; the "problem"-- if it is a "problem" is that they were Browning's "last gasp" at building an "improved" autoloader before they started the new stuff. The other is that they were made in spain (...i think...). That meant the "Hardcore Browning Worshippers" distained them, and wouldn't buy them -- mine works great!!...) sitting in one of the downstairs corners of our house right now. It's a great shotgun and has functioned reliably with everything we have put thru it. It is deadly fast and totally reliable. I've tried to "trick" it by loading light target loads right along with high speed buckshot. It simply doesnt care; it shoots em all. The down side (...if you can call it a down side...) is it only holds 5 rounds (...including one in the spout...), but it's fast handling and dead reliable. I'm looking for a "lightly used, lovingly cared for A5 now" to make another semiauto homesweeper. A semiauto HD shotgun aint a bad idea. Hoep this helps. Leroy

ET's observation here is as great (...and as true...) a pronouncement that has ever been made about self defense and guns (...no matter whether shotgun, rifle, or handgun...). He is exactly right. All calibers will kill ya, and shot placement trumps everything else. I say folks should pick out what they are comfortable with and what fits their method of carry, wear it out practicing with it, and pray daily that you are not called on to use it; just be ready if you are. As others have consistently said in this forum, shot placement plus having your gun with ya when ya need it most are the two most important pieces of "going armed" and defending yourself and possibly others. Keep up the good work! Leroy

I fully agree with Johnny and Brandon. We've done two AR's so far (...an HBAR carbine and a HBAR Bushmaster...). I really think Johnny hit the nail square on the head with his observation that building them is:"....like legos for big kids. ...". He is dead right. I think it's a good thing to build the lowers yourself so you have some notion about how the parts of your AR fit together and work. You may need to know that sometime. I also like the idea of buying a complete upper (...or having someone build it for you; it takes a few tools we dont have....), just pick out what ya want. We had a couple built just the way we wanted them and i really like them. That way, you get exactly what ya want. I may get beat up for saying this; but i see the AR business like the computer business; if the parts that go inside are good, names dont mean much unless you are a collector. If good parts go in (...no matter the name...), good reliability and accuracy will result. If it's possible, there are more great AR parts out there than there are 1911 parts. I like Spikes, Yankee Hill Machine, Bravo Company, Noveske, LMT, Double Star (...right close in ky...); the list goes on and on. Take a look at the AR builder feature on the Brownells website, plus the stuff available at AR15.com and m4carbine.net. There are also several great guys who are members here who are a great resource and help. Hope this helps. Let us know what ya decide to do. Leroy

TSA Out of control: Takes 3year toddler teddy bear and requires pat down
leroy replied to Harold's topic in General Chat
My BS meter has run off the scale with this platitudinous speech. RE: “…the double standard and the “trampling” of the rights of Muslims….). The TSA courtesy of the Federal Government has removed most of your “rights” (…read that your rights, my rights, Muslim rights, on and on … when you buy an airline ticket; and they have said exactly that to folks who objected their procedures…). There, in fact, is not “double standard; there is a “stupid standard”. This standard purports to pronounce that all are equally suspect. That simply aint true and anyone that takes a few minutes to think about it knows this truth. The fact is that white catholic nuns, little old blue haired ladies, and white Caucasian three year olds wagging teddy bears from that multi-cultural bastion and multi-ethnic melting pot of Chattanooga, TN aint very likely to be potential terrorists. RE: The “racist issue”. I say that anyone with a foolish (…or insidious…) agenda can play the “racist” card. It is an old time “cottage industry” in the black community in this country and is becoming one in the muslim community. It an old, tired, trite ploy that works on the childish and those who are not sure of who they are and what they believe. It is laughable to me that folks would actually be afraid of being called a “racist” by a bunch of either misguided children (…or thugs…) shouting catcalls of “racism” while wrapping themselves in the very flag they loathe, all the while purporting equal treatment for all. It is the “theatre of the absurd”; but that is what some of us (…luckily not all…)have become. Where, I say, is the “equal treatment for all” in the muslim lands and in the thug dictatorships that most of the folks that are, in fact, a danger to this country hail from? You know the answer to that very well; there aint any. On a personal basis, I could care less about whether you think I’m a racist or not, and no one else should care either. It’s high time that the adults took the asylum back over with regard to this grotesque and detestable malarkey. RE: “Christian extremists”. I don’t know about you; but I aint seen any and neither have you. I will grant that i've seen some that are misguided, but not dangerous. You may want to check this out; but I am pretty certain that middle eastern young men brought down the Twin Towers. They were muslim, not Christian. RE: “Lame excuses”. I say that most any responsible exception to your speech will be most likely graded as a “lame excuse”, “racist” or “ignorant” because these answers do not fit your world view. I’m old enough and adult enough to where that doesn’t bother me too much. You can feed the platidunous speeches to those who are kind enough to politely listen to them, but they won’t work on me. How’s that for an answer? Racist Leroy -
TSA Out of control: Takes 3year toddler teddy bear and requires pat down
leroy replied to Harold's topic in General Chat
Folks need to decide just how much of this they are willing to put up with. I've made my decision. It's zero. I won't fly anywhere. I'ts ok with me if they all starve. There will be no "enhanced security" until we quit playing this silly game of inspecting nuns, three year olds with teddy bears, and old white people in the name of politically correct "non profiling". I say we need to profile. Until we face up to that truth, none of this malarkey means anything. It's a matter of time until something happens. No amount of 100% frivolous, intrusive inspection of everybody (...other than those most likely to be terrorists...) by union yahoos and childish chumps will "enhance" security in this country for the air traveller. Lester:_________________ We are jeep guys at my house and always have been. They are a great thing. I heartily recommend your looking at and picking out the one you like. RE: Wheels. There are those who will tell you that it's only a matter of time until the 15 and 16 inch tire sizes disappear. I think that is exactly right; you can see it happening in the 15 inch tire sizes now. I like the 17 inch wheels because there are lots of tires that will fit it now. With a jeep; i simply cant tell any difference in ride no matter the tire size. The biggest difference (...read that "improvement in ride" for the jeep...) i can tell is the use of coil springs in the front of the jeep (...that started somewhere around 1997, i think...); that does make a big difference in jeep rideability. The son's jeep is a 2000 wrangler sahra 5 speed inline 6 hardtop (...which i heartily recommend; the jeep gets cold in winter...); and has a 3 inch lift with 35 by 15 inch Dick Cepek tires. It is smooth, but you can feel it squirm on the road. The bigger rim diameters cut the sidewall flex down and lessen this "squirming". It's important to note, however, that this "squirming" happens during 'highway speeds" when changing lanes or running over the crown of the roadway (....about 65 to 70 mph....). It is noticeable, but aint a big deal. It is nonexistant at "normal" backroad and dirt road speeds. Hope this helps. Leroy

I probably ought not to do this; but I just can’t help myself. This issue of large bore “pocket pistols†is near and dear to me. I have read all the posts with a mixture of horror and amusement regarding certain pronouncements as to the suitability of a “large bore†pocket pistol. Namely, the 44 special, 44 mag, or 41 mag. For the sake of discussion; I’m going to throw in a couple of these guy’s big bore brothers; the 45 colt and the 45acp. It has been said more than one time that these calibers are not good defensive choices. I believe that we need to explore that pronouncement a bit. The first cartridge that was adopted by the US Army was the 45 colt in 1873. The 45 colt fired a 255 grain round nose bullet at about 900 fps in its original loading. It was, in fact, the first widely used big bore defensive cartridge manufactured in the United States. It reigned supreme in the mayhem and killing department until it was displaced by its autoloading son; the 45 ACP. Note if you will the similarity both in caliber and velocity between these two. Along about 1907, the 44 s & w special was invented by (…guess who…); Smith and Wesson. The “special†was based on the underpowered 44 Russian built for (…guess who…) the Russians. The 44 special was an artful copy of that old time killer, the 45 colt. The “special†was chambered in a more advanced gun; the old time large frame smith double action hand ejector. It is important to note that during this whole process; these cartridges were designed and used for killing and mayhem against humans; not animals. They did, however, work on the occasional animal up to a very large size; but that was not the main reason for their development. Along in the late twenties folks started “souping up†the old 44 special in order to get more performance from it (…I would presume for hunting purposes; both human and animal….). The foremost of these “hot rodders†was a little man by the name of Elmer Keith. Elmer’s work in “hot rodding†the 44 culminated in the design and production of the 44 mag. In 1958 (…I think…). The 41 mag came out about 1964 as the results of Elmer’s work in the development of the ultimate “police cartridgeâ€, and the 41 mag was originally marketed that way. That’s why there is a smith model 58. What then, you say, was the purpose of the 41 mag? Police work; not hunting. Sadly, by this time, two interesting phenemenon had landed in the “killing departmentâ€. The first was the realization that some (…not all…) police operatives could not effectively use the old time “big bore†calibers. They kicked too hard, cost too much, were too heavy, and (….according to some….) didn’t have enough firepower (…read that “round countâ€â€¦). The other was the Air Force military establishment who purported to know more than others (…read that the army…) about the role of the handgun in killing armed attackers. After all, the US Air force had an “elite†unit that guarded ballistic missiles and hydrogen bombs. All this “studying†lead to the ultimate adoption of the 9 mm in the military. The military, in effect, dragged the police along to abandon the big bore double action pistol in favor of smaller autoloaders with a higher round count. That’s why you have the 9 mm and 40 s & w of today. All these things came together to develop the “conventional wisdom†that abounds today that says that the old revolver with its limited round count, great weight, and antiquated cartridges are simply not effective as self defense tools. To all that, I say a hearty “baloney†for all the reasons stated above. There are those among our little band who will say that big bore revolvers are heavy and hard to conceal. I say that the new smith scandium frame revolvers weigh 21 to 25 ounces. My glock 33 weighs 20 ounces and a full size 45 auto weighs from 38 to 40 ounces. Looks pretty good to me; but I will grant that concealment is somewhat of a problem. My personal preference for concealment is the old time Milt Sparks 200 aw holster (….link here: http://www.miltsparks.com/200AW.htm. …) . You just cover it up with a coat. There are those who will say that “there is a danger of over penetrationâ€. There sure is. And there always has and will be. It is no trouble to find instances of ‘over penetration†with every caliber there is. There are those who will say that the big frame smiths and tauruses are not “pocket gunsâ€. I say you are somewhat right. Smith makes a 2.4 inch 45 ACP revolver (…read this: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2783396/review_smith_wesson_325pd_revolver.html ...); the 325 PD. We can quibble about whose pocket it will fit into; but these “snubby†big frame revolvers have been around a long time. There are those who will say “there aint enough round countâ€. I say the likelihood of needing more than six rounds is so remote as to be miniscule. There are those who say “….time (…and technology…) has passed these dinosaursâ€â€¦.. ; get a semi auto pistol with a “large†round count. Some folks (…including me…) simply do not like that idea and would rather do it the “old time†way. That’s ok. Both the new and old can stand peaceably together. There are those who will say that there is a problem with full power ammunition. I agree. There are solutions, however. The first is handloading. The second is to use “store-bought†ammo. I would look for hard cast semiwadcutter ammo in the 1000 fps or less velocity range. There is some out there. I would close this little essay with another bit of backward looking to lay to rest the idea that the auto loading pistol is the ultimate fighting pistol. There was a guy by the name of Jeff Cooper who did more than anyone to popularize the auto loading pistol and the 45 ACP than anyone before him. He is the father of the vaunted ‘Thunder Ranchâ€. In his younger days he did some exhibition shooting with a couple of his buddies who used the big frame double action revolver and the old ‘antiquated†single action army colt. If you care to do a bit of digging, you can find his old books and pictures of these demonstrations. The net results (…if I remember right were these…). Sometimes cooper won, sometimes the double action smith guy won; sometimes the SSA guy won. All with big bore calibers. There are those who would opine that the double action revolver is, in fact, faster than the vaunted 45acp for the first six shots. Watch Jerry Miculek sometime. The moral of this little story is this; all the big calibers are killers and are fast and deadly accurate in the hands of those who spend the time to learn how to shoot them. By the way, Cooper is the father of the much vaunted 10 mm and its son the 40 s & w. Don’t ever succumb to the belief that somehow the old time plus 40 calibers are not mankillers; in the right hands they are. To say otherwise is laughable. I hope this helps you to decide about the suitability of the big bore “pocket pistolsâ€. After all, that is what ya asked about to begin with. Regards, Leroy (…the oldtimer…)
