The 308 will shoot a long way (...600+ yards or farther...) with lots less wind drift and great accuracy. The downside is that they are heavy and expensive. The best 308 setup (...in my opinion, anyway...) is a bolt gun. I've kept 'em for years. They will shoot as far as you can see. hope this helps Leroy

Me too!! It's great! Leroy

Make it legal to carry without permit: yes or no?
leroy replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Jamie's post above pretty well says it all. It is an excellent assessment of the current state of affairs and as sensible and sobering look at what "the law" really does as i have seen. Excellent post!! I'm a bit older than Jamie (...im 64...), but my experience pretty much mirrors his. I grew up in the countryside where lots of people were armed all the time. What he describes here was pretty much the way things were for a long time: The fact is that there pretty much was no trouble. As Jamie says so well: Folks would do well to think deeply on these things. Our system of justice is just fine; but the punishment apparatus is broken. If you want to keep yourself relatively safe (...along with others...), you need to arm yourself, learn how to shoot and shoot straight, and have the mindset to do so when you need to. The law simply cannot keep you safe (...and never could...). The sad fact is, there is no deterrent to the real hoodlum and killer today other than the fear of an armed citizen. Leroy -
Make it legal to carry without permit: yes or no?

Fernatt and others:____________ RE: This question (...an excellent one at that...): My answer is the "Original Intent" or Libertarian one. The Second Amendment says the "....right to bear arms shall not be infringed...". That is exactly what it means. Any other interpetation is restrictive. Remember this; the genesis of the gun control laws for "public (....more aptly, collective, as the soviets would say....) good" and the "regulating of the wearing of arms with an eye toward order..." (...or whatever the TCA statute says...) is nothing but a naked move to take arms away from targeted classes of people (...who, by the way, for the most part were political enemies of those making the laws...) and punish any discenters. The Founding Fathers never envisioned a time when a bunch of bureaucrats would have the power to regulate the "wearing of arms" anymore than they envisioned limits on free association or free speech. Dont be dragged off in the woods by the baloney that says that some "expert" needs to teach you how to handle a firearm, sign a paper saying he has, and some bureaucrat needs to give you a "permission slip" to carry a firearm (...for a fee, of course...). You, as a citizen, already had that right. That's what the original Bill of Rights was all about. It simply got "hijacked" by thugs, polititians, and (...here in Tennessee...) Union symphathizing carpetbaggers. If you do a bit of looking, you will find that the real genesis of gun control statutes originated in big cities (...Think Chicago, New York, Cleveland, here...) where sheriffs and chiefs of police were bought and sold like cattle for a price by thugs seeking to disarm eachother (...and, of course, you the law abiding citizen--it made things safer for the thugs...). Further, there is an excellent discussion somewhere in the archives here discussing the origins of the Tennessee statutes. They originated right after the Civil War (...interesting, dont you think?...). Some folks believe (...me among them...) that the original statute was to disarm the losing side and/or to disarm the newly freed slaves. Summary: As blessed as we are here in Tennessee to have a "right to carry law" in place; it simply is not what the Founding Fathers intended; as it limits the original intent of the Second Amendment. No state should have the right to "regulate the wearing or arms"; but the Federal Courts have upheld it for a long time. I think that is where Haslam is comming from, and I think he (...or his advisors on this issue...) is right. All that being said, remember this one thing; he is a polititian and todays "for it" can be tomorrow's "against it". I, for one, am thankful he appears to be for it for the time being. Hope this gives ya a few things to think about. Leroy -
I love these guys. Thanks for posting them!! Leroy

Thanks Trigem for adding the great explanation above. I spent a bit of time in the welding, metal working, machining, heat treating industry on big parts; and i heartily concur with his excellent assessment. All parts can have problems (...read that "defects"....); no matter the mode of manufacture. If you (...or the manufacturer, assembler, or custom gunsmith...) have a "bad" part; you will soon see it. Just visually inspect it, then replace. For what it's worth; i wouldnt worry too much about the mim, forged, and stamped thing. If the parts (...no mater whether mim, cast, forged, stamped, or bar stock...) make it thru the machining / grinding process to get them to their final geometry; they will probably work just fine for a very long time as sears, hammers, etc if they look ok. That being said; if you are worried about service and longivety; Ed Brown (...and others...) make some very good machined parts. Today's steels are good stuff. There has been a literal revolution in the last thirty years in the steelmaking industry and not many people noticed it. Parts today are a good as have ever been made. The great thing about the 1911 is that it is the AR15 of the handgun family --- every imaginable part (...and some that are not imaginable...) is available for them. Rugers are full of mim parts. Ruger frames are investment cast (...as I remember; Ruger; AKA Pine Tree Castings is one of the largest investment casters of small parts in the usa...). Their revolvers are the king of strong. Leroy

Thanks for telling us about them (...and doing the lovely piecutes...). They are great 1911's. I love the old time look and the dovetail sights. Regards. Leroy

Thanks for the kindness Mike and Think!!. I may be wrong about this; but again, im a suspicious man when it comes to the political class and political zelots. By the way; take the time read this: Rights activists press Obama to work for gay marriage. Interesting aint it? Merry Christmas to all (...gay and straight, pagan and saint, believers and agnostic; you know; EVERYBODY MAN!!!...)!! Leroy

There has never been an edict, decree, or law that successfully controlled discrimination (...or morality, or the lack thereof...); and this one will be no different. You are right in saying that the military is not a democracy; and no one will argue that with you. The military will, in fact, follow orders. Said another way, they will do exactly what they are told no matter how stupid or obtuse; they are subject to civilian authority (..no matter how heinous or foolish...). My problem aint the military problem or even the "discriminitory problem". It's the long range problem that making the openly gay a "protected species" will bring. If "gayness" is protected; by definition, you (...presuming you are 'straight"...) are at least number two. Where's the equality in that for you? Remember, there are already federal laws on the books that talk about "hate crimes". Those laws have already been used to prosecute crimes against "gays". Interesting... aint it?. Looks to me like the "gay" community already has some "protections" in place that you and i dont have. There are plenty of us out here that believe that "gayness" is a lifestyle choice. That belief doesnt automatically qualify me (...or anyone else, for that matter...) as a bigot or a persecuter of gays. I (....and many others, i believe...) simply dont believe in the "no-fault" view of life; and the idea that says that the individual is a "helpless" no-fault waif that is gragged around by mysterious, supernatural (...or natural ... depending on your world view....) forces that make them do the things they do. That is simply a convenient cop-out. Life is full of choices; and no amount of apologizing and making up stories about it can remove the individual's responsibility for his (...her or it's ...) actions. In my view the DADT military thing is simply an excuse to advance an activist agenda; and that's exactly what has happened. The military simply acts as a convenient vehicle for the initial implementation of a long range agenda. My point is to look to the end game. The end game (...for the gay activist community....) is to make the openly gay a genuine protected minority. After all, that is exactly what happened with the race and gender issue. The end game (...from the politico's perspective...) is to curry the favor of and harvest the dollars from another constituency. After all, the "political class" know what is best for all us "serfs". They'll handle any fallout and pick the "winners and loosers". Leroy

Give it a few years and see if it's alright. Right now, you, me, and everyone is free to think whatever they want. Wait until the "gay discrimination" police come around. They're out there. Leroy

All:______________ I think there is a lot of wisdom in Mike, Jamie, and Garfua's posts above (...as well as many others...). My take on this whole thing is that you need to "follow the money" on this one. The Demorats have made themselves a formidable power by bonding various splinter constituencies together over time. At their core, polititians are into "picking winners and loosers" to reward friends and punish enemies. That technique has not been lost on the "political class" republicans. Times are hard now; and all the various politicos (...notice i didnt say statesmen...) worship the god of money and power. Money is, in fact, the "Mother's Milk of politics". Many of the political class (...both Demorat and Republican...) covet dollars and influence, no matter where it comes from. A good example would be Republicans in dark blue states like Kalefornia (...the "home" of the Log Cabin Republicans...). In the end, this aint about national policy, honoring the service of "gay" military service members, percieved morality issues, nor civil rights. It's about harvesting the dollars and currying favor with another "voting bloc". This aint a "left wing" demorat conspiracy; its a cynical move by the "political class on both sides of the isle" to engender loyalty and harvest dollars. They could give a damn less about any fallout. It's the dollars and political power that counts. Merry Christmas from the political class!! Read this from that "ultimate demorat DA, morally bankrupt politico; the great joe (...the plagiarizer...) biden, VP of the good ole USA: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/news/ap/politics/2010/Dec/24/biden_says_gay_marriage__inevitable_.html Leroy

I think you will be pleasantly suprised (...and possibly shocked...) at the value. I recommend taking it to someone who does apprasials on fine firearms and getting a written apprasial. I would call the guys at R. W. Hart company and see what they think. Leroy

Folks:____________ Iv'e taken the liberty of annotating Chuck's great quote a bit. The quote is right in a multitude of ways. The first is the original meaning, i believe there are others. Here we go: The whole "Dont Ask, Dont Tell" repeal thing is about laying the groundwork to make a case that says that openly gay folks are a persecuted minority. This has nothing to do about serving as an openly gay soldier in the military and everything to do about laying the groundwork to grant them (...the entire "gay" community; both military and not-military...) federally protected minority status as a class of people. The Gay Rights movement desperately wants to legitimize their cause and make it a "civil rights" issue similarly to what was done in the late 50's with the end of segregation in the military (...check this out for the history lesson: End of U.S. Military Segregation Set Stage for Rights Movement ....). This is the "Holy Grail" for the gay movement; to legitimize and protect them as a class; and give them federal protectons and advantages that "straight" citizens do not have. If the gay community is made a "legitimate" minority, you can expect mischief everywhere. The legitimate minorities should be deeply offended by this move. Race and gender is an individual characteristic that a "Creator" or "nature" (...depending on your individual world view or belief system...) confers on an individual basis. "Gayness" is a sexual preference that the individual decides to practice; they aint the same thing. This is simply the fulfillment of another hippy era goal of "changing the immutable laws". This aint about honoring the patriotism of "gay" folks; its about advancing a heinous political and social agenda at the expense of the military (...both gay and straight...). Dont be dragged off into the woods by those who are making speeches about honoring the brave who serve. That aint what this is about. It's about a movement whose aim is to "legitimize" and sanctify as a "minority" the illegitimate at the expense of the military one one side; and the shameless pandering to a "pseudo-minority" with money on the other side --- Remember the "Log Cabin" (...read that gay...) Republicans started this whole dust-up. The fact of the matter is that Nobama, the Demorats, and a bunch of cynical Republicans are actively currying the favor and devotion of the "gay community" at the expense of the military and everyone else. It's about buying votes and collecting favors. Everything is for sale now; that's the great "immorality" of this whole debacle. Food for thought. Leroy

Lester:_____________ I like the tubular rails. We have them on the 21 year old's wrangler and my prerunner. I like them as they both "dress up" the truck and protect against door openers. I'm an old guy too; and i tend to step up on them to get into my prerunner. I have to step straight into the wrangler (...it's got a 3 inch lift and 35 inch tires; so its pretty high...). Hope this helps a bit. Leroy

Sorry to hear of your loss. We lost our old Golden Retirever on May 30 of this year; i'm still sniffing about it. With sympathy. Leroy

Johnny:_____________ Pick the nite sites you like (...we use whatever is on sale when we are looking; trijcon, ameriglo, meprolight, etc...). I would recommend looking at as many as you can. I cant really tell any difference in them, they all do exactly what they are supposed to do. We also add the decalgrips grip panels (...the sandy ones...) to the gripframe, and install an all steel guide-rod and spring (...captured or non-captured, dont care which...) in the stock pistol (...i just dont like plastic type parts on a guide-rod; but that's just me...). The final touch is to order an Allen Miller kydex pocket holster for the beastie to be housed in. We shoot it to make sure it works (...they always do, hehehe -- that's why they are so great...) and put it in service. The glocks dont need much monkeying with; they aint like the 1911's. All this from an old time double action smith and colt 1911 snob. Have fun, Leroy
