I wouldn't judge ANY handgun ammunition based on a shot through angled laminated glass. That's a low percentage shot period.

That will be interesting to hear about. You will probably need 3F powder to get the burn rate up to work in a short barrel. I think the real thing will work better than the substitutes... I'm betting that Dry is the way to run it. Black Powder fouling is always worse on humid days, and the worse in guns using a greased patch compared to non lubricated bullet.

If anyone thinks their handgun is a 100% fight stopper they are delusional. Even rifles aren't 100%. There are too many ways to fail and the 100% targets are too small and moving too unpredictably. The shooter is under stress etc... Somewhere I heard it said that "the only fight you really win is the one you never get into" sadly some LEO's find themselves in situations where they have no choice. This is one of those examples. Prag said it... Weird crap happens...

Actually NYPD has good training generally. Like most large departments they are let down by management & bureaucracy. Sadly they get saddled with 10+lb triggers and other stupid stuff. Never mind it's still screwed up

I've been a 45 guy for many years, but this isn't a caliber problem. There are just too many variables in a shooting situation. They had a 50% failure to stop rate. Sounds about typical to me. Some will argue that this is a good reason to carry a high capacity 9mm, and/or spare mags. I wouldn't disagree with that. Heavy clothing, angle of entry, and countless other factors come into play... Handguns suck at stopping fights. It's a shame that someone is going to have to argue that the ammo was ok, the guns were ok, instead of admitting that they stopped the fight. Someone may get a big check from the knee jerk reaction to this. They may even switch calibers or guns which may reduce officer competence with their weapon... I'm more concerned about the bystander that was struck.

UT & UK probably have the best shooting programs in the us outside the military schools. As long as it's fun it will build her personal character and responsibility. This just makes me smile.

In my rifle league before moving to TN I had the pleasure to be thoroughly beaten by 2 young ladies that went on to school at UT Knox and one is an alternate for the Olympic team. I highly doubt that you could ever get 2700fps from an AR on Black powder as the barrel is just too short to burn enough powder to get that kind of velocity. Sub sonic loads in 300BO would be much more like it with a better balance of bore volume vs case volume. The tighter tolerances of the AR may or may not work against it. I'm not sure that a long stroke piston would be beneficial, I think short stroke would be better simply by reducing the surface area for fouling to build up on. DI may have some advantage of the area inside the carrier being on average cooler and possibly less likely to build up hard to remove fouling. Gas ports will be a maintenance area for all systems. Regardless of the system it would require LOTS of maintenance to keep it running. BP is just plain dirtier than smokeless and builds up. in a SHTF situation it might work in a pinch, and like everything in those conditions you will maintain it like your life depends on it because you won't have spares....

And what's the cost of travel, maybe eating out because of the travel, etc. I as wonder if the delays are all the same, are they learning from this? Does anyone in management know? This sort of thing raises my hackles because it makes me wonder about the quality of the record keeping over all...

Hmm, but when the argument states that carrying in public by law abiding citizens might increase the danger to the public at large then the argument that legally owned guns and legal gun owners are NOT the problem is valid and applicable.

It just irritates me to no end that I never read in these cases where the point is made that LAW ABIDING gun owners commit VERY few crimes. I'll admit I don't know the numbers but almost no carry permits get revoked due to the commission of a crime. The issue isn't guns, its criminals and this is blatantly ignored by the media, but you also never see this argument made in these court cases.

3.6 is a big difference even though it doesn't seem like it. when you look at the range of 3.6 min to 4.1 MAX that's only 0.5gr total between min and MAX. Titegroup is a pretty high energy powder and while not the easiest to start with because of that you also don't need to run near MAX all the time. I'm using 3.8 or 3.9 for my match loads and they run just fine. If the 3.6gr loads functioned OK then that's you r most economical load as its the least powder. It works out to about 150 more rounds per pound! if cash is tight that makes a difference for sure

The load is 3.6 to 4.1gr titegroup with the berry 124gr HBRN PM inbound

The Hodgdon data lists the hollow base 124gr bullet so the data is about as accurate as it can be in this case. yes most hollow base bullets have somewhat longer bearing surface and there is some risk if increased pressures if not using data specifically for them.

Nice looking Ballard. I rebarreled one in 22 hornet years ago and it was fun to shoot. I real bear to remove the barrel though, square threads, rust dating back more than a century, iron receiver, etc... I never sweet one with a bayonet though. What caliber is it?

How's your high school physics memory... Let me try this another way. Max allowable pressure is always constant right? Given that, then this is really just newton's law. It takes more energy to move a heavier object. Because your available energy is limited by the allowable pressure you have to lower the powder charge on heavier bullets to prevent going over the pressure limit. I'm ignoring some things like case volume and increased friction due to longer bearing surface. These have some effect on pressure, but the bullet weight change is the biggest reason for less powder. The hollow base on the berry's really just moves the center of gravity forward, kind of like a dart or shuttle cock. It won't have much if any effect on pressure. (No not much sleep lately I'm on a long commute from one homestead to the other)

There is also a relationship between bullet weight, powder charged pressure. The cartridge will only safely handle a specific pressure. Given the same powder charge a heavier bullet will develop higher pressure. Just the higher weight and longer bearing surface will cause pressure to rise. Like bowling balls... yes are all the same dimension, but heavier ones are harder to throw at the same speed.

If yes are nickel they are reloadable. Check with a magnet. Steel isn't worth tell trouble especially as you are just starting out

Interesting example of the good guys aren't the problem so they weren't worried about them. Sounds like it might have been the hardest civilian target in the USA. I doubt anyone will report that thousands of legal pistol carrying citizens show up hung out for the day and that no one got shot...
