S&W M&P in back pocket: Interesting sight
ReeferMac replied to Pete123's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I've got a Desantis like this that I use for my M&P compact 9. It's actually quite comfortable to carry, and I find it easy to draw. I wear in the 5 O'Clock position, and find that the upside-down and canted angle 'works' for my wrist. I can pull it out and get on target fairly quickly. I imagine carrying w/ the firearm oriented straight up-and-down would require more vertical draw, and my elbow and wrist start to ache just thinking about that movement. I've actually been looking for a replacement as my current holster is getting worn and 'sloppy'. - K -
South Fork is nice. I enjoyed the time we spent at Rugby, it was pretty neat. A little further East, but we recently hiked Frozen Head State Park, and it was enjoyed by all. My youngest is 9, but the trails were well maintained and not too steep, easy for wee one's. - K

Interesting, thanks for sharing! I've been in the market for a new holster for my M&P as the leather one I have isn't very 'snug' anymore. I was hoping to get an Alien Gear OWB, but theirs doesn't cant/tilt the same as my Desantis, and I dunno if I want to draw straight up from a 5 O'clock carry position where I like to wear it. - K

http://nypost.com/2016/05/19/nypd-checking-ammo-after-knifemans-jacket-stops-cops-bullets/ Four of the shots that cops fired at a madman waving a knife in Midtown failed to penetrate his jacket — which was not bulletproof — and the NYPD will now check the weapons for malfunction, law enforcement sources told The Post. “The bullets we have may be defective and that’s very disturbing,” one source said. “When we fire our weapons, we want to make damn sure that our bullets hit our target — neutralizing our target.” A sergeant and an officer fired a total of nine rounds at 46-year-old Garry Conrad on Wednesday, with one of the shots killing the depressed Broadway stagehand who refused to drop the blade at West 49th Street and Eighth Avenue. Four of the bullets got lodged in Conrad’s Carhartt jacket, sources said, adding that he was not wearing a bulletproof vest. OK, all you .45 ACP guys can dog-pile on the smaller calibers! - K

I ran a batch of 3.6 grains, and it was a real creampuff compared to the 3.9s. I was surprised such a small diff. in powder made as big a diff. in my hand? - K
-
Where? I couldn't find that (admittedly, site doesn't work too well w/ my browser) (Or, if you remember the load off-hand...) Put together about 300 rds. over the weekend, mostly @ 3.9 grains (as I've used it and it works), put up some @ 4.1 grains, and made 2 sets of test-groups w/the Hornady XTP 115 grain bullets at different charges (min and max listed) to see how they perform. - K

ooooooohhh... grab me a can of Timmy's!!!! LOL! - K

Man, do you ever sleep? LOL! So the inertia of the static bullet in addition to friction from case-contact causes more of the powder to burn inside the case, creating the high(er) pressures w/ less powder? Whereas the smaller bullet gets moving more quickly, and requires more powder to reach the same pressures? Some of the charge possibly burning after the bullet has left the case? I'm just stuck on the notion that if I put more powder inside the case, it should make a bigger bang? The bigger/heavier bullets require a bigger bang (simplified physics), yet I'm putting LESS powder in the case for the larger bullet. Seem's counter-intuitive? Frankly I'm fearlful to put 4.5 grains of powder in for the little 115 gr. XTP's. Just trying to get my head around the physics of all the stuff that happens in 0.0034 seconds. Which also makes me wonder about those Berry's bullets w/ the hollowed out tail? Does having that cavity back there create a significant impact on the combustion or does it only affect flight performance? Technically it creates more 'case-space' than exists in a flat-tailed bullet, so that would mean possibly more powder needed? Again, that just seems whacky to me? The opposite of what you'd expect? I 'get' that the combustion happening in a more confined space will raise the pressure... just less powder for more weight seems the opposite of what you'd expect? I de-primed and re-sized a whole bag of cleaned brass last night ( Thanks again! ), so was going to cook up a couple different charges and bullet combinations to test out. I finally got a key to the indoor range at ORSA so can test them out anytime. - K - K

Another rookie question on reloading: Went to Hodgdon's website to research loading data on 115 gr. bullets, reco'd 4.5-4.8 grn's for Speer Gold-Dot HP's (I've got a box of Hornady's XTP). The 124 gr. FMJ's I've been loading at 3.9 grains of powder... max of 4.1 Speeds show as slightly lower, but pressure's about the same. Why am I using less powder for a heavier bullet? That doesn't seem to make sense to me? Using Titegroup on 9mm pistol loads. Thanks for the info. - K

Interested to follow the thread Dolo, got many of the same questions myself! I've heard several good reco's about Kubota's, from people that know better than me. - K

I was sitting here de-priming some brass, and encountered a handful of steel/silver colored cases. I set them aside as I've heard they are not re-loadable.... but what would happen if I did reload a (few) cases? - K
-
Thanks for all the feedback guys. The more I look into it, the more I think I want to squeeze another 500 bucks out my arse and spring for a steel garage? It sounds like I'm best served pouring a concrete pad either way (DIY project # 345,502!), and for only a little more money, I can get a more suitable structure that will serve more purposes longer? - K

Newbie to reloading here, so looking for some idea's? My die's appear to be marking the bullets after seating? There is a circular 'ring' around them after pressing, that is not there on the new one's. Hoping it shows in the pic: screen capture freeware These are Berry's Bullets 124 grain plated FMJ 9mm. The loads operate fine and seem accurate enough, but I'm curious if it can be prevented, or if it might be having an affect I'm not seeing? I had one round out of the entire batch of ~60+ that failed to load up the feed ramp, but I was also using a smaller charge (3.6 gr vs. 3.9 gr), so am chalking that one up to the powder and not the bullet (OAL might have been off by a hair, too, I'm just learning to reload). Thanks for the feedback. - K

First Timer Questions: Hornady Custom Grade Dies
ReeferMac replied to ReeferMac's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Got out to the range Weds. to test things out, for the most part they ran OK. I had 2 that failed to fire (gun went click, primers dented, but no bang). I also made up a batch of 124 gr. bullets using 3.6 grains of powder, and had 2 that stove-piped, it was noticebly 'lighter'. The 3.9 gr. load felt almost identical to the commercial ammo I usually use, so made up another couple hundred cartridges of 3.9 to practice with. The brass looked OK to me after firing, I did not see any head separation of case wear, but I'm no expert... gif hosting The 2 that FTF were from the first 20-or-so rounds I ever made, and I do specifically recall taking a few pulls to get used to seating the primers. On inspection, it does appear they are a little 'high' on the brass, so I'll go ahead and chalk those 2 rounds up to bad primer seating. I shot a total of 60+ reloads that day, and those were the only 2 that mis-behaved. free jpeg images Otherwise the rounds performed well. I was very pleased. Made up a bunch more last night I'm itching to take out. So much for 'saving money'.... but I can tell already I sure will get to shoot a lot more! - K -
Sweet looking gun! Looking at a savage myself (never enough bread to go around...) - K

ORSA Members: Group Buy for Reloading Components?
ReeferMac replied to Grunt81's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Hello Grunt, Welcome to the area. Also an ORSA member, happy to take you out there as well. It's a very nice club. Got a new batch of reloads I just made, if you want to go this weekend, give me a PM! We can shoot pistols on the plinking range, rifle's on a the steel or 200yd. range, or take shotgun's out for skeet and trap. I'm not experienced with either 'game', but like watching the little clay frisbee's go 'pooof!' - Kevin -
Yep, that's the starting price range for grade-c containers. Delivery added the extra money to the price. - K
-
Thanks for all the idea's and suggestions. Those prices are around what I'm getting quoted - Delivery is not included in those prices. Add's about a grand. Most units are coming out of Atlanta. - K
-
Thanks for the suggestions! We're not going to live in the thing, I just need it for storage! Though I have to admit, I saw one pic where they cut the top off, added a liner, and made one into a pool! I thought that was pretty cool. Gravel pad or pour some pilings and raise it off the ground? Will the 'floor' support a lot of weight? I may end up parking a tractor in there.... And I know a guy w. a dump-truck, I can get #3 crusher run pretty cheap. - K

Getting closer to closing all the property deals and taking possession of the land we're trying to buy.... And one of the first problems we have to solve is secure storage on the lot. Building anything will take time and money, but I've heard several times getting a used Conex shipping container is a good way to go. Lowest price I've found so far is $2600 delivered for a 40' used container. Anyone have any experience with these things, opinions, learned wisdow, or other comment? Would love to hear. Thanks. - Kevin

Irish AND a transplant from NY to TN?!?! My God man, I need to buy you a pint! (Moved from Rochester last year, and I'm a McDonald!) - Kevin

I just went to the minister's tree house this weekend (since I was in Crossville for Highwalker's Edible Plant's class anyways). Can't get more than a couple hundred yards away from it. Fenced off, locked fence... but you can kinda see it OK from the fence? Sucker's huge! - K

I saw that look at least once a week going from my job to the local farmer's market in downtown Rochester NY... it's one of the many reasons we moved and GTFOOT! Really do miss that market, however. Voted best in the country (and I believe it!) - K

First Timer Questions: Hornady Custom Grade Dies
ReeferMac replied to ReeferMac's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Yes Frank, he showed me the ropes once a few months ago, but the 'ol noggin only has so much room... That's actually one reason I wanted a 'portable' board for setting up my reloading setup. Soon as he's done getting his hernia healed, I'll be heading over there for some pointers! - K
