  1. I've thought about getting one, but it just seems there are a lot of them for sale in the used market. Why are so many people buying them and then selling them at a loss? I haven't even handled one yet but I'm wondering. Cherokee Slim
  2. The .243 will easily take down anything in Tennessee. If you were to buy another rifle I'd go 308 and be able to take anything in the country. The .270 would be just a stopping place until you move up to 308. The .243 is fun to shoot but the 308 reminds you that you are shooting a real rifle. I'm sort of prejudiced, I carried an M14 for 4 years. Cherokee Slim
  3. My personal favorite for a small .40 is my Kahr PM40, followed by my G27. Both are easy to hide & shoot. Cherokee Slim

    NEED HELP!!

Welcome to the United States! Just go get a HCP. I doubt you will have any problems. Regarding ease of purchase in Tennessee (God's Chosen State) and Chattanooga (The Buckle on the Bible Belt) look at this link from today's Chattanooga Times Free Press. What you see is about a normal "going into a weekend" offering in the classified. Cherokee Slim July 2009 Classified Ads Guns Chattanooga Times Free Press
  5. I asked for a renewal by mail form and this is what I got: Cherokee Slim I'll send it to you! Also, you no longer need to submit proof of US Citizenship with your renewal anymore. So just the application and $50.00 is all you need to submit. 6. I worked all summer in the early 60's to be able to go to Treasure Island and buy my first rifle, a Remington 514. I still have it, albit I cut off the stock and barrel when I started my daughters, then 4 grandkids shooting. (now they aren't happy unless they are shooting my Bushmaster or Glocks) Next favorite would that heavy monster of a M14 the Corps gave me in 1968. Some day, I'd like to get another one. 7. Ed Cross Cross Arms 703 Walker Valley Rd. NW Cleveland, TN 37312 phone: 423-336-5837 I got 4 SS Ruger Bearcats from Mr. Cross for my grandkids. He was easy to work with and had a huge Ruger selection. Prices were a little less than MSRP. Cherokee Slim
  8. You will notice a fine black powder when you clean it the first few times. It's from the frame & slide fitting themselves. I called Kahr when mine did it and they told me it is normal and will quit after 200-300 rounds. It did and I've never had a FTF or FTE. Cherokee Slim
  9. Absolutely worth it. I got mine from Carters in Chattanooga. After a month or so I got rid of 3 9mms I didn't carry any more. I carry it more than my G23 and have has zero problems with it. I paid about the same as you did. Cherokee Slim
  10. If you want to meet close to me, I'll provide free baked guinea pig. Cherokee Slim (In Cusco Peru)
  11. Did that group break up? I remember the meeting we all Cowboyed up, six-guns, shotguns and rifles. People barely batted an eye. We were very welcome there. Cherokee Slim
  12. If I don't know them, I try to get their DL number, and car make, model & license when they leave. I've never been burned. I just take a little extra care. Cherokee Slim
  13. I agree with Mousegunner. I've made 2 pistol purchases from Carters and was well treated both times. He even gave me a free range membership with the first one. Darrs was always smokey, and didn't want to give much in trade, but did have a lot of good stuff. I have to admit I've started ordering everything from primers to holsters or whatever, from Midway. It just got to where it was cheaper, a better selection, and quick delivery. That's probably one of the reasons Darr & others go out of business. Cherokee Slim
  14. The 1911 Forum has a "How to" section. I used what I found there to change a grip safety. There is a lot of good info there. Cherokee Slim 1911 'How-To's' and FAQ - 1911Forum
  15. If you like that revolver just carry it with .38 specials in it. Cherokee Slim
  16. Here is what I got today inresponse to my email to him: June 3, 2009 Dear Richard and Ramona: Thank you for contacting me about gun-related bills which have been considered by the General Assembly this year. Let me be very clear: I am a strong supporter of the right to keep and bear arms. I am, and have always been, committed to preserving the rights of the Second Amendment. They are basic American rights, protected by the United States Constitution and the Tennessee Constitution as well. Even so, these rights, for more than two centuries, have come with reasonable and necessary rules and guidelines. For this reason, I carefully consider each bill that reaches my desk and evaluate it on its own merits. As you know, I decided to veto House Bill 962, which would permit the possession of firearms in Tennessee restaurants and bars. In my view, this particular bill crossed the line of reason. I have been a gun owner for more than 50 years. When I was a young man, I took my first gun safety class-sponsored by the NRA-at my high school. There was one message conveyed during that class that has been imprinted on me since, and it was this: guns and alcohol don't mix. That is as true today as it was then. It is because of this principle that Tennessee state law has long prohibited the possession of firearms in places that serve alcohol. House Bill 962 would remove this safeguard in a manner that I, as well as many law enforcement officers, believe would be reckless and lacking safeguards to ensure public safety. A key role of government is to ensure public safety. To do that, government must strike a balance between the rights afforded to us by the Constitution and common-sense rules that must be applied to the exercise of these rights. I believe we can exercise our second amendment rights and common sense at the same time - and guns and bars simply don't mix. Because of this, I vetoed this bill and respectfully asked the legislature to rethink this issue. As other bills reach my desk-including legislation related to guns in parks, loaded firearms in automobiles, and others-I intend to review them carefully with both the Constitutional rights of gun owners and the safety of the general public in mind. Please be assured that your views are, and will remain, important to me on these issues and others related to state government. Warmest regards, Phil Bredesen PB:jb
  17. My next buy was for a .45 on the subcompact 1911. I researched these two Colts and was about to order the Defender. I'd like to know more about the NA. I wanted to stay under $1000. Cherokee Slim
  18. I asked for feedback on the New Agent on the Colt forum and didn't get any at all. They all liked the Defender. Did you look at the Defender? How hard was it to adapt to the slot sight on the NA? Cherokee Slim
  19. I've traded for and gotten rid of most of what has been mentioned above over the years. I hoped the reworked Springfields would like me better but they don't I still have the PT145 I got a good deal on in the safe but noticed I seldom carry it. I've decided my next compact .45 will be the Series 90 Colt Defender with wood instead of wrap-around rubber grips. Cherokee Slim
  20. I bought each of my grandkids one. They are a great starter sun. They all started shooting at about 4 years of age and have since graduated to Glocks & ARs. Cross Arms in Cleveland Tn got them for me. Cherokee Slim
  21. I cross land borders in South America fairly frequently. A supply of inexpensive AA MAG style lights and Walmart type leatherman tools go a long way towards generating good will. ALL border/custom guards are underpaid so an inexpensive "gift" is a treasure to them. Also, they may be dirty, uneducated oafs, but they expect the same respect you would give an ICE agent returning to the US. Calling them "Sir" costs you nothing and shows respect. Cherokee Slim
  22. After I got the Kahr PM40 I got rid of all carry pistols 9mm and below. So now it's a Glock 23 with a coat & the Kahr PM40 when in Speedo & tee shirt. Cherokee Slim

    Western Fun!

Yeeeaaaahhh, but he isn't a GENUINE TENNESSEE Cowboy. Look at: http://jspublications.net/records/records.html And scroll down to Pistol - Gunfighter, and watch a Tennessee boy, Widowmaker, unload 10 rounds in 1.81 seconds. I want to be like him when I grow up. Cherokee Slim
  24. I'll be working out of the US when my permit expires so I've started early to get the paperwork to get it renewed. My daughters in Chattanooga were told that I had to do it in person, that it can't be done by mail, they can't pick up papers for me, etc. No mercy, no exceptions. I emailed the official email address for the Handgun Permit Office and was answered by a very professional, polite lady named Sarah Jean Simpson. She answered all my questions, immediately understood my situation, and is helping me renew my license when others said it couldn't be done, and didn't want to mess with it. Kudos to her for her professionalism! There are good state employees! Cherokee Slim
  25. I agree with the Galco shoulder holsters. I used one for a K frame Smith for about three years and it was always comfortable with easy access. Cherokee Slim
