  2. I saw several people open carrying at the Mountaineer Festival at Fall Creek Falls last weekend and not a word was said about it, even when they were around the Rangers. It's GOOD to live in Tennessee. Cherokee Slim
  3. +1 for Shooter's Depot. It is also very friendly to women & 1st time shooters. My wife, daughter & in-laws took their class from Dodd & Associates. My daughter, who has a PHD and is a bit . . . . . picky at times, said that he communicated very well and didn't talk down to the women. Cherokee Slim

  6. SASS allows the sighted Rugers, I.E. Blackhawks, to shoot in the modern category. The "basic cowboy sight" Vaqueros/New Model Vaqueros are the main guns seen locally. I shoot 2 in .45, as does one grandson. His are the New Model Vaqueros in 45, mine are Old Model. Another shoots .38s in the .357 New Model Vaqueros. Many cowboys are shooting the 38s just because of the cost of lead & bullets. Most cowboys reload because of the large amounts of ammo shot. Regardless, 38s, 44s and 45s are straight wall cases and easily reloaded to reduce your shooting expense. Cherokee Slim

  8. Greetings from Greater Downtown Lakesite (Soddy Daisy) Shooter's Depot at Hwy 153 & Shallowford Road is my choice for indoor shooting. You can also take family there, it is a family run shop, and not get f bombed out the door. They have a great range. If you want good rifle, pistol & full auto ranges the Cleveland Rifle, Pistol, Hunting Club is a good place to go. It's an hour from me but I can spend 4-5 hours there shooting various ranges and guns. All the being said, Real Men shoot Cowboy Action Shooting. Sponsored by the Single Action Shooting Society, The Ocoee Rangers shoot the 4th Saturday of each month, the Tennessee Mountain Marauders shoot the 3rd Saturday at Mystery Dog Ranch off of Wooten Road, off of Exit 1 I75. I shoot .45 Ruger Vaqueros, as does one grandson. Another grandson shoots .38 Rugers and my 13 year old granddaughter shoots Ruger Bearcats. We all share a .38 Marlin lever action rifle; I shoot a 1897 pump 12 gauge, the boys shoot a Hartford double in 12 gauge. Rhinestone Rachel shoots a Henry .22 Golden Boy Rifle and a Stoeger 410 double shotgun. If you are interested in any of this shoot me a PM and maybe I can hep expose you to the Cowboy matches. If you like guns, shooting and cowboys this is the place to do it. CHRPC also has 3 gun and other events. You are i hour from Wartrace, the home of the Tennessee State SASS Match, and about the same from Oak Ridge where another fine group shoots. 9. Anybody know what happened to this group? They were active here when we were on furlough some years ago but seem to have disappeared. Now that we are retired and finally settled down back in the US I'd like to find them again. Cherokee Slim
  10. I agree with the Lazy Boy. But only if I am priming a small batch like long range 45-70 or 38's. The high usage rounds like 45 colt and regular 38's I prime in the Dillon 500. Cherokee Slim
  11. Today I ran across a complete, as of May 2011, list of Tennessee’s 1449 FFL holders. I guess I was surprised to see so many, but also how many are storage centers, grocery stores, antique stores, clothing stores, etc. I’ve been in many of these businesses and would never have guessed they were a FFL license as well. Here is the easily found list: ATF Online - Statistics - Listing of Federal Firearms Licensees Cherokee Slim
  12. It does have a sweet interesting taste. I'll have to try it over ice as has been suggested. I've noticed that it doesn't pack anywhere near the kick of regular Jack. Cherokee Slim
  13. The receiver with the serial number is sold by a FFL and the rest is purchased piece by piece? So since you're assembling not manufacturing, BATF isn't involved at all? Cherokee Slim
  14. It used to be because it was relaxing and I shot a lot. Now with 3 grandkids shooting SASS and everything else they can get their hands on reloading is a must do. But now I have them doing all of the reloading for everything they shoot. It teaches them that some things have to be done carefully and precisely. It's also cool when the Sharps 45-70 buffalo gun hits that steel buffalo at 200 yards that they can explain powder & bullet weight, drop and hold when somebody asks them. Cherokee Slim
  15. So educate me a bit here. I see dozens of posts on various forums about building your own AR. Why do you do it? I've got a Bushmaster that shoots every time and is very accurate. Is it a lot cheaper to build one, or do you do it just to have it exactly like you like it? I can understand a gun building project but I'm more of a shade tree gunsmith. I know just enough to really screw something up. Understand I'm not criticizing, I'd just like to know more about it. Thanks. Cherokee Slim
  16. Low necklines are discouraged at Cowboy matches just for that reason. You never know where a rifle will eject a hot case. Also, for those inquiring minds who want to know, it's also a SASS rule that extra ammo can not be staged in cleavage. Just in case you were wondering. Cherokee Slim
  17. If you have to use two to go all the way around I suppose you could carry two guns. Cherokee SLim
  18. So now my granddaughter Rhinestone Rachel, is now shooting Cowboy twice a month with her two older cousins and me. She is shooting a 410 double coach gun for the shotgun part of the stages. But 410 shells are expensive, twice what we pay for 12 gauge shells. So I’m thinking about trying to reload them. I don’t want to spend $200 on a loader, and Lee doesn’t make the Load All II in 410. If she sticks to the same gun my experience is that I wont have to resize the shells. I can reprime easy enough with what looks like a large pistol or rifle primer. Now I’m looking for a way to close and crimp the shell. Any ideas? Cherokee Slim
  19. So what’s with “The Pig Bomb†“Hog Wars†and the like on TV? They spend the whole show trying to trap or catch feral pigs in a trap or with dogs. Sometimes they take a serious risk, from my point of view, to kill it with a knife. Why don’t they just shoot them? If there are just a few hogs I can see trying to do it like they show on TV. Kind of like turkey hunting, you get one or so and go home. But if they are such a threat to the environment why not have 6 guys with Bushmasters ambush the herds and make a serious dent in the numbers of hogs running loose. Maybe I’m missing something? Are they a problem in SE Tennessee outside the National Forest? Inquiring minds want to know. Cherokee Slim
  20. John Martin & the Glock reps announced yesterday that Glock now has a carbine that they will release this summer. It was wild there on Friday, they were expecting a 4 hour wait today to see the Gunny. They have 2 lanes reserved just to shoot the sample Glocks. (and I regularly carry the G36 if someone want to meet sometime to try it) Cherokee Slim
  21. I'm glad to see an overall gradual growth. Looks like the greater growth overall is in the more rural areas. If I had to of guessed ahead of time I would have said Shelby, Davidson & Knox would have been way out in front. I see God's Country, AKA Hamilton, has a good growth rate. Not a huge surprise when you look at all the cowboys shooting and the number of people at local ranges. Thanks for the post. Cherokee Slim
  22. Seems like a lot of people are looking at shooting Cowboy and the Single Action Shooting Society. It is the most family friendly sport that I have ever seen. I shoot with two grandsons and now my youngest grandaughter. While some are concerned with shaving off that 1/1000th of a second in their scores, most people do it to look good and have fun. Visit one of the matches BEFORE you go out and buy guns. It will save you money in the long run. Every match that I have attended has had people who will lend you guns, ammo and leather to let you see if you like it. Don't like the pump shotgun? Somebody will loan you a double. Don't know if you want to shoot .45 or .38? Somebody will let you shoot theirs to give you an idea. We stress safety above all, but you will never be talked ugly to when you make a mistake. If you live around Chattanooga here are some clubs to visit. You will learn a lot just reading their forums. 23. Seems to me I remember something about people with limited hand movement being able to use a switchblade type knife. I can't remember when or where I heard it. I do know that i would never have arrested someone with one arm for example for having a switchblade. Whether that was just common sense, THP policy or a legal opinion I disremember. All officers have a great amount of freedom in what they arrest for. Common sense on their part and a respectful attitude on the knife carriers part go a long way. Cherokee Slim
  24. I went to the last Camp Jordan gunshow fully intending to buy the new 1522. Even though we reload .223 my grandkids can rip through whatever amount they load. I make them reload everything they shoot now, even to shoot Cowboy. I found the Target Master conversion for sale. They told me it would drop right into my Bushmaster and shoot first time every time. They even offered to refund my money if I wasn't happy. We have shot through two full bricks of .22 and are starting on another. It doesn't like the cheap Walmart Federal bulk ammo, but then neither does my Walther P22. There is the occasional FTF but it's rare. I've been really happy with it. Cherokee Slim
