  1. Both comments on this thread, plus experience from my business, lead me to confidently say that higher engagement is all about the content. A quick example from my business will set up my point for TGO. Many companies send email advertisements, which tend to irritate people. Many companies in the business to business world send monthly newsletters, which are opened 10-15% of the time. I find articles that I think will be interesting to prospective customers. I write a brief summary, include the article and send it. No advertising or promotion. I get an open rate of 35%, with a fair amount opening it two or more times. The subject of the article determines how many opens I get. Bringing this back to TGO, participation is all about the quality of the content. All of us control the content. If folks will start and contribute to threads about guns, knives, etc... then participation will increase. Another part of good content is covering things that they audience is interested in. Example, I've invested a lot of time in learning how to preserve antique guns so that people can still enjoy them in 1000 years. I was willing to write about how to do it, though thought I would do just a short intro to see if folks were interested. It turned out that they weren't. Here are areas where I think people have interest: Modern tactical rifles, especially the AR platform Defensive handguns Carry related topics WW2 guns, especially the M1, K98, Mosin, Enfields SKS Asking gun related questions. Wow what a wealth of knowledge.
  2. I'm starting to think about a .308 semi auto and would like get input on what kind of money it takes to build or buy a good quality one. Can it be done for under $1000? I would rather not get one that get something I won't be happy with. At the same time I can't afford $2000 plus. I want something that will accept magazines, not like the Browning that holds 3 or 4 rounds. Input will be appreciated.
  3. Good advice on sealing the wood, especially on which product to use. I tried to seal a stock with boiled linseed oil and it neevveeeeeeeeeer dries. I'll get some classic mags in addition to the polymer ones. I went ahead and bought this ahead of the attempts to band defense rifles. My concern is that they may try to ban all center fire semi auto rifles. After all, why would anybody need more than a single shot for hunting?
  4. Maybe we can all think of an interesting topic or two to post. I've spending time on the political threads. The issue there is that we tend to have two groups here, the conservatives and no joking, totally to the right conservatives. So, what happens is that no one ever convinces the other side of anything. We just argue. I tell myself I'll stay off of them, though somehow I keep going back.....
  5. I haven't tried the RAK-1 and can't compare. I can say that the Century Arms trigger on the AK is much nicer than the one on my Sig M400, which is Sigs lower level AR.
  6. No, I won't do that. While I did go order clips from Amazon, I could have cancelled both orders - one was for ten the other for twenty. I cancelled the one for twenty, though kept the other one as it has a sling to carry clips for my SKSs. I would use magazines on my SKSs though thye don't seem to work well.
  7. ok, I missed the joke. Though, I will now have a little canvas bag to carry clips for my SKS.
  8. Well I hit Amazon and ordered 10 clips and a commie ammo carrier. I'll use them on my SKS, though they work on an AK47 as well.
  9. It has a Century trigger. Garufa, clips rather than magazines? Also, I got it off of GunBroker for $626. None of the usual suspects had WASRs.
  10. I haven't shot it yet but like the feel. It's light, goes to the shoulder in a good place and has a surprisingly good trigger.
  11. It feels like less traffic to me as well. Of course I don't have statistics, though it seems to me that we haven't had as many threads in the areas that generate the most participation and satisfaction, which are the ones about guns, knives, fishing, etc... The threads where someone asks how to do something with a gun or other TGO type thing seem to go well. People want to be helpful and they enjoy sharing knowledge and opinion. This forum seems to get the most interest in modern firearms, especially the AR 15. There are also a core group of C&R folks, of which I'm one. I've been a little surprised at the lack of interest in the Civil War guns I've posted. Sense of humor always helps things. I didn't start the funny picture thread for me - I've already found, seen and enjoyed them. I try to keep it going as we can be a somber lot. I remember starting a thread saying the the SKS should be the official gun of TN as the notion is so ridiculous that its really funny. You would have thought I wanted Bernie for Governor based on some of the replies. Sense of humor always helps. Other threads that have been good have been ones like what gun would you have if you could only have one, etc....
  12. Very Nice
  13. Dave, You and I see it the same. The SKS is an awesome gun. Fun to shoot and plenty accurate for me.
  14. S.O.G and J&G have Chinese SKSs. The advertising from Southern Ohio says they are 1960s era. If this is true I want to get one due to the historical significance relative the the Vietnam War. Does anyone know if this advertising is correct? On a similar but different note. Does anyone know how much the SKS was used in Vietnam by the commies? Pics from the time usually have AKs. Yet, it would make sense to me that there were a lot of SKSs as China shares a border with Vietnam, SKSs were what the Chinese used for themselves (not the AK) and money was a big issue. While I don't know, I would assume that Chinese SKSs cost less to produce. I haven't been able to find a lot of information, though found one source that said in a Viet Cong group the boss would have an AK and the rest would have SKSs. I guess I'm saying that there is seemingly contradictory information and I would like a better answer.
  15. Duplicate on SKS
  16. I also think it has to do with stage of life. I'm in my 50s and would rather spend $200 on something gun related - like putting it toward an original Winchester 1873.
  17. All I can say is that you never had a pair or have an ass that nothing could make look good. Nothing girlie about these jeans.
  18. $200 jeans wouldn't make as much sense to those of us carrying and/or married. $200 jeans fit in a manner that tends to be eye candy for the ladies and help the single guys get certain attention. I wish my big ass would fit into mine.... Lincoln's been smacked around enough. He's new and your going to run him off. There isn't one among us that hasn't had bad days where we said and did similar things - cut him a little slack.
  19. I don't remember what it was about either, which actually makes me happy. We were on opposite sides of opinion on something.
  20. Guys, come on here. There is no need for the anger. The guy who made the retarded comment was responding in anger. I doubt he really thinks Caster is retarded. MacGyver's role is to keep things civil. I don't see him siding with Caster, but acting like a ref in a fight telling fighters to break the clinch and cautioning a certain punch. In another situation, he failed to see my comedic genius and that I really should be on Saturday Night Live. I didn't agree with him, though keep in mind that I think he's a volunteer. If he is paid, I seriously doubt it adds up to much relative to the time of reading every post. Lincoln, this isn't worth getting banned over. This is a good forum. Many people avoid the political and opinion part of the forum. I can definitely say that anyone can post a gun related question or problem and there will be many responses from many folks that know an awful lot about guns. Caster and I had a heated debate / argument about a week ago. We got tired of fighting and went back to having fun, kind of like kids on the play ground. I love how kids on the playground can have a fight, then forget about it and get back to having fun.
  21. Caster is plenty intelligent. I agree with him that Academy is ducking behind the bar when the brawl breaks out. I also, believe that 2nd Amendment supporters demonstrating attitude and behavior like that of Daniel Defense are hurting our cause.
  22. Gotthegoods, my comment was not geared toward you. It was meant to point out that the Daily Caller, which wrote the article that started this thread , are big fat liars who are demonizing a voice of reason for the liberal media. I had to Google to find the actual article from the New York Times.
  23. That is the short version of the article in The New York Times. I was very pleased that they published it.
  24. Nice looking dog. Also, love the play of writing TGO or something you knew he would chew.
