If you could only have one gun, what would it be?
Pete123 replied to Pete123's topic in General Chat
ok, how about this. Your one gun for the zombie apocalypse. -
Dave, I dunno. There are many times when I refuse to do business with someone for the same reason you are giving. I view a firearms defense case kind of like brain surgery. If I needed brain surgery, I want the surgeon with the best knowledge and skills and will pass on the one with good bedside manor. I've listened to him talk firearms self defense law for six hours and he knows a tremendous amount. Here in middle TN, any of the defense attorneys wouldn't have handled more than a handful of firearms self defense cases.

I totally agree with your take on this. Why pay someone to treat you badly? Sig makes some very good products, some crap and customer service sucks. With me, they have gone from a company where I would pay a premium for anything they have on the market to where I avoid them unless it is a product where they are hands down the best with years of history behind it.

Interesting results from this poll on the Second Amendment: http://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/poll-voters-divided-government-role-gun-control-access-n598676

I've never been to pay five times the market rate for a high quality product. Someone gave me a Yeti coffee to go mug. I'll have to say, it does keep things hot.
-
Dovetailing on reewik, you have to be well educated about Sig firearms to be a happy customer. They make some of the best guns in the world and then put their name on some clunkers. I've never understood premium brands putting their name on low quality products.

I'll have to say that I'm envious of you guys that can shoot that far.

The type of attorney that defends these type of cases is a defense attorney. I'm here in Nashville. So I did Internet research to find the best defense attorneys and emailed one of the attorneys and have him in my contacts. I will ask my attorney to contact Andrew Branca, who probably knows more about firearms self defense law than anyone in the country. He isn't very popular on TGO as he joined and got banned for pushing his business or something - I wasn't here.

A rifle and a pistol are two guns. As they famous line from a movie, which I can't remember, says, "There can only be one" -

Really interesting responses. When thinking about the question, it didn't occur to me that people would use pistols as their choice. It makes me realize that we all had to make some assumptions. My assumption was more toward thinking about society breaking down, possible civil war or the US changing from a democracy to a dictatorship. I don't view our society as stable to the point that those can't happen. Also, I thought about being able to hunt. A lot of folks made different assumptions and opted for concealed carry. I'll also have to say that a lever action rifle covers a wider set of variables that I thought about. -
So, if you could only have one gun, what would it be? This would be a tough choice for any of us. I'm going with an M1 Garand.

I didn't find a place to clear the list. I did find a place where you can change many things about notifications. 1. Click on the bell at the top right of the screen. 2. A little window will open. At the top right of the little window, click on 'Notification Settings' 3. Once inside the settings area, there are a myriad of things you can change. 4. Make sure to save any changes.

Time for Remington to make good on their promises of improved quality.

All this great input has me thinking towards saving and getting an FN FAL. It isn't that much more that the S&W or DPMS. Gen. George Patton, 'Gunny' Sgt. R Lee Ermey all see the M1 Garand the same way. I can't bring myself to deface a piece of history so it will take a magazine and a new one somehow just isn't the same. I take it that FAL is a descriptive term like AR 15, and not tied to a manufacturer. Should I try for an FN? Who else makes really high quality FALs under $1500?

How to easily see both unread and read content on TGO
Pete123 replied to Pete123's topic in General Chat
Same thing with me. I had also been frustrated at going back to content I had already ready. I got a s far as saving a new stream, but couldn't find where I saved it too. I'm glad you all brought this up because I looked until I found it. -
Dave and Wing, I just posted instructions on how to navigate all content without frustration.
-
Many of us from the home page of TGO click on the unread tab at the top right of the home page. This goes to a view showing unread content. Suppose that you just read something and want to go back to it? This can be frustrating. Well the good news is that the new site is better than the old site for finding and viewing info, though things work a little differently. Here are the steps to address this: From the home screen, click on ‘Unread Content’ to the right side of the home page. The next screen has several tabs across the top. These are awesome as they allow you to slice and dice data most any way your want. Next, click the little down arrow on the ‘Read Status’ tab Click on ‘Everything’ from the drop down menu. Look to the right of the screen right below the line of tabs. You just changed the view on the ‘Unread Status’ in this line of tabs. Click on the button to ‘Save As New Stream’, which is below the line of tabs I just described. When you click on ‘Save As New Stream’ a little window will open. Click in the box that says, ‘Unread Content’ erase “Unread Content’ and name the new Stream. I named mine ‘Everything” Click on “Create Stream” From now on, you will navigate TGO differently. You will no long click on ‘Unread Content’ to the right of the home screen next to ‘Mark site read’ You will now navigate as follows: Go to the TGO home screen Click on ‘Activity’ to the right of the picture of the house. A drop down menu will appear. Click on “My Activity Streams” Your new Activity Stream will be at the bottom of the list. Mine says ‘Everything’, which is the name I gave it. You have multiple choices under “My Activity Streams”, including Unread. Navigate from here moving forward. Post a note or send me a PM if you run into trouble and I’ll help out. Type written instructions like this can be hard to follow. Also, post a not if there are other things you haven't been able to figure out.
-
Dave, if you and anyone else running into trouble in knowing how to do something will post what those things are I'll do video where you can here my voice and see my screen as I walk through how to do things. I like that method better than typing because there is less room to miscommunicate and you can stop the video and back it up if needed.

Very good post Dave, thanks!

Good input. I've also used Birchwood Casey Tru Oil with great results. Same thing, you can gloss it up or dull it down. Products are probably similar. Tru Oil takes linseed oil and does something to it to improve it.

I have a nice daddy M1 Garand from the 50s or 60s. It is a 30-06. It uses the Garand clips, but has a metal plate where the magazine would go. Is it reasonably easy to set it up to use magazines? Would it be sacrilege to migrate it to a .308? Roughly, what would that cost? I wouldn't it change the barrel myself and would pay a good gunsmith to do it.
-
Thanks Greg, I want something that takes a magazine.

My opinion for what its worth. I wouldn't prohibit the political threads. After all, no one has to open them. Rather than eliminating them, I would be more inclined for moderators shut them down and lock them more quickly - as quickly as anything they view as hateful or abrasive starts up. There are some topics that always evolve into hate, perhaps those should be banned or quickly shut down. The most glaring of those are about Muslims. On a different note, I think we all need to stop talking about the new site unless there is a specific problem that needs to be fixed. David didn't have a choice - the site had to be upgraded. Anyone we lose because of the upgrade is unfortunate, though there was not an alternative. I don't think people realize how much of a hassle it was for David and team to do the upgrade. This isn't like your iPhone where you plug it in and it works. I do believe the new site is slower and haven't said anything for a few reasons. If it is slower then David knows that and is doing what he can to address it considering the revenue generated by the site. He has chosen to make TGO the best he can rather than turning it into a big money maker. The cost of TGO is extremely reasonable. Until earlier this month I subscribed to The Wall Street Journal online. It was $300 per year and they still pounded me with irritating advertisements. Keep all of this in mind as you think about the new site. There are plenty of paycheck to paycheck folks on here and he keeps the price where they can afford it. TGO and it's roughly ten years of data are on a server somewhere. The cost of a really nice pc is chump change compared to what servers cost.

Great input. What about the PTR 91 or CETME mentioned by gotthegoods. I seem to remember a negative review on a PTR on this forum. The Century Arms retails for $700. Any input on those? Here is how I would define quality for me. Many people use Taurus semi auto pistols and love them. I would rather save money and pay more to get a S&W M&P. Many folks makes less expensive 1911 Govt models. I would rather save and get a Springfield. I guess I'm saying, not high end and not introductory level, but in the middle.
