  1. My initial description and a follow-up post used inflammatory language. The system won’t let me edit them. Here is what I would have said with a cooler mind: A group of violence prone people gather in a public place and have a shootout. Luckily, no bystanders or police were injured or killed. This is irritating as it gives the gun control lobby something to spin. It also paints motorcycle clubs in a negative light, most of which are good people out to have a good time around common interests such as Harley’s, military vets, religious groups, etc… This happened at a Twin Peaks, a restaurant similar to Hooters. The manager of that particular Twin Peaks made a very poor judgement call. While I personally am not a Twin Peaks fan, I have no doubt that the organization as a whole would never want to enable a shootout like this.

  3. I'll bet you all will like it here....certainly have milder winters. Also, the people are friendly.
  4. Sharp knives are definitely safer. I believe this sharpener would work on non kitchen knives just fine - that the specs for the sharpener would say. At the time I bought my Chef's Choice they had multiple models. Several of them didn't get good reviews. One of my primary knives is a 3 inch paring knife and the model I have does well with it. I'm guessing that there are plenty of brands that have good sharpeners on the market and that the key getting one of the good ones.
  5. They are on Amazon. Looks like there were posts from Walmart as well.
  6. There were several women in my class. We received hints of things that would be on the test. The shooting test isn't difficult.
  7. The one I have has three stages. The first stage is very course and has a special guard on it to keep folks from ruining good knives on it. The middle stage isn't meant to be used much. I'll usually do one pass on each side. If I let them get dull then I use two passes. The final stage is polishing, which is where I spend the most time.
  8. I recently got a Springfield loaded 1911 that came with Tritium sights. The challenge I was having is that I shoot a lot at an indoor range and the lighting made the glare on the rear sights so bad that I couldn't shoot well. Of course, I could get new sights, but then would either pay a bunch or lose the tritium sights. I gave Sight Black a try. Basically, it's spray on carbon black that comes off easily. Of course, like any self respecting man, I refused to read the instructions. I was rewarded for that by getting carbon black on everything and petroleum distillate infused carbon black spots all over a dress shirt. Fortunately, I buy cheap ones. After reading the instructions, it works like a charm. Shake it a lot and hold it 8-10 inches away. Thought I would share in case it would help anyone else. It would make better sense to get new sights if the gun wouldn't ever be used for defense, though this may become a defense gun.
  9. I really like my kitchen knives razor sharp. The problem is that I don't like to sharpen them. Several years ago I ponied up and got a Chef's Choice Edgeselect 120 Diamond Hone Sharpener - Plus. I have french carbon steel knives and they are razor sharp all the time and it takes only a moment of two to keep them that way. Thought I would share this with the knife folks that don't know about these things. It looks to me like this would not work with a thick knife. I ordered it from Cabela's. Chef's Choice had a model that was a step down, but the reviews weren't good. This has been about 7 years ago.
  10. I was thinking about getting my two year old Honda Accord set up to roll coal, though after thinking about it, decided that i would rather get a machine gun installed on the roof - one of those that you can control with a joy stick. :)

    My First 1911

I think you bought a fine gun and one that is the best for the money in today's market. Hopefully, som of this will be helpful: 1. Sounds like you may have scratched the gun putting the slide stop back in. My Loaded is my second 1911 and I scratched it. I'm trying to not let it bother me. This Springfield loaded is much tighter than my other one and the slide stop is hard to put in. I suspect that most 1911's that are shot frequently have been scratched by the slide stop. 2. There may be something wrong with the grip safety. Springfield customer service is awesome. If needed, they will email you a FedEx label and you'll get your gun back shortly. No challenge at all. 3. Nothing feels good in the hand like a Browning Hi Power or similar gun like your CZ. It may be that other grips would be better for you. I suspect you hand is big enough. Hogue, Packmyer or other grips may help you grip the gun better. Like you, I really appreciate the ones that came on it.....and the grips that come on some of Sringfield's more expensive 1911's are pretty badass looking and have better gripping. 4. You mentioned sore hands. I run my mouth and use a computer for a living. I've noticed that doing things with guns may hurt my hands at first, though it gets better. I love the suggestion to get snap caps and practice at home. Your muscles will build up in no time. 5. You mentioned the recoil being more than you are used to. My hope is that you will get used to it by shooting more. I'm getting better at focusing on the front sight and pressing the trigger and don't really notice the recoil. I also remember that when I first got back into shooting earlier this year that the 9mm felt like a lot of recoil. Having said that, I am a big believer in sticking to calibers that are comfortable for the shooter. Testosterone and ego get involved with guns, which causes many to develop significant flinch, wasted money on expensive ammo, etc...
  12. 20/20 is obviously pushing gun control.....and the video points out that consistent training is needed to be effective.
  13. Obama has done such a poor job that she will be fighting an uphill battle. Let's just hope the Republicans can come up with a good candidate.
  14. I'm going and looking forward to it.
  15. Glad to have you. I moved here from Asheville 3 or 4 years ago.
  16. I would definitely come to a coffee, though just saw this. Would anyone be up for scheduling a week or two out so everyone will have time to plan?
  17. I really appreciate how you are trying your very, very best to help her have fun with this.
  18. 10-Ring, My experience may be helpful. This may not all be exactly correct, though I think it is. The bi-focal is a magnifying glass. The question will be if the front and rear sights can be clear through the bi-focal. I believe it depends on the amount of magnification. Lower magnification has a longer sight plane and greater magnification has shorter. I use different glasses now, but pulled out an old pair of bi-focals. The sleeve length of shirts for me is 35 for perspective. I aimed a handgun with the bi-focals and could see just fine. I then aimed my AR and saw just fine, though I had to make sure to look through the right part of the glasses. When shooting, I have to make sure my glasses are pushed up on my nose so I look through the right part of the lenses. Unless they had to use a lot of magnification, my best guess is that she will be fine - if she looks through the right part of the lenses. The action to look through different parts of the lenses is to move your head up or down, or your eyes up or down. Ensure that her glasses haven't slid down her nose if she can't see. If she still can't see, suggest that she raise her head a little. (like shaking your head "yes", though just raising it a little) I'll bet you can work through this if you are patient and my hope is that you won't need special sights. I'm thinking the hard part will be figuring out how to help her look through the right part of the lenses using 6 year old language. Best of luck!
  19. An FN is definitely on my wish list. I may have to get a CZ 75 first, but FN is definitely there.
  20. Congratulations. You are doing the hard work of taking care of yourself and it is showing. Hopefully, I'm about to follow in your foot steps!
  21. I have the one that clips on your pocket or waist. I walk more and get more exercise because of it. Make sure to get a tether if you have the clip on model - I think they designed it to be lost. Go for a gadget leash for better looks or search Amazon for a cheap one.
  22. Nice collection. It's hard to to argue with the effectiveness of the Kalashnikov firearms. More of them made than all other assault rifles combined. Currently reading a Vietnam war special forces book....seals engage a platoon of NVA. One guy's M16 fired one shot and jammed so badly that he couldn't clear it. They have cleared that up by now. Certainly not not the AR platform....have a Sig M400 on the way.
  23. Violent riots make it hard to support their cause.....Martin Luther King, Jr. showed the right way to protest.

    Funny

The woman may have a developmental disability. It makes me think back to the reality show where they would get people on the show that were either mentally ill or had something else going on, then humiliate them in front of the whole country. There were some suicides over that.

    Funny

I'm hoping that was a joke - it isn't right to humiliate someone that way.
