Ok, Mike.357 - Yes, Ira Hayes was one of the marines. Johnny Cash did a song about him as well. Now, apparently the Air Force didn't exist as a stand alone organization in WWII. Having said that, allow me to introduce the Mustang P51. The P51 was to the air what the Garand was for infantry. A truly bad mamma jamma. Casualty rates for Allied bomber crews flying from England to bomb Germany were 70%. Two things contributed greatly. First, the defensive guns of the bombers did not compete well with Axis fighters. Next, Allies didn't have long range fighters that could escort them all the way. The P51 changed that. They could go all the way and took performance to a new level. The P51 to the German Air Force was like the Garand to a bolt action K98. I'm sure that we have members who can clarify and add. Now for the pic:

We all know and love this photo. It was taken 71 years ago on Feb 23rd. This is on Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima. The flag was raised by five Marines and a sailor. In a nod to the Army and Air Force, there are a couple of pics of them below. The pic below is from the Battle of Midway. Midway was the turning point of the war in the Pacific.

No one seems to know where this was taken or why they guy is carrying the donkey. Best explanation I found is that donkeys were very valuable to these folks and they were protecting the baby. I'll have to say that the donkey looks pretty happy.

Well, show me a gun that isn't way cooler with a bayonet on it. Fact is, we know that God meant to rifles to have bayonets as he saw to it that the SKS has a non removable one. Speaking of flame throwers:

  I started this thread saying that the state gun should be an SKS.  Of course I was joking.  Anyway, as we were having fun with it, someone suggested that perhaps the Barrett would be more palatable to me if it were to have a bayonet, which I agreed with heartily.   In short, the part about the bayonet was a joke.

Glad you are here.  Thank you for your service.  I wish I could shoot as well as you.   Strategic Edge has a range out to 1250 yards, though it's a haul from where you are.   I wonder if there is a range at Ft. Campbell that is 1000 yards that you can use.

I disagree with the tone of this thread.  The real bad apples in this mix were David Koresh and his leadership team.  The behavior of the Branch Davidian leadership was sick and reprehensible and most likely included crimes against children.   The ATF had a warrant to serve.  The agents who were killed serving the warrant died in the line of duty.  I appreciate their duty and acknowledge that they paid the ultimate sacrifice.  I'll also say that I have found the ATF to be completely helpful, even as they serve a president that is very, very anti gun.   The FBI started the siege.  Undoubtedly, they made mistakes.  A sad fact of life is that leadership in government seldom accepts responsibility for making mistakes.  As best I can tell, the FBI has made significant changes in response to this situation.   I don't like the government.  I don't like paying taxes.  I also recognize that as governments go, ours is better than most.     Their mistakes and lack of accepting responsibility don't change the fact that the ATF went to serve a valid warrant, that the Davidian's didn't like it, and broke out with the guns.     Looking at modern day, we see these thugs killing our police officers and are outraged.  I don't see how the Davidian's are any better.   I think we also have to remember that law enforcement is a very, very difficult job.

I would recommend CrashPlan and a local backup - either a flash drive or external hard drive.   Here's why:     CrashPlan is similar to Carbonite.  The great thing is that it automatically does the backup and you don't have to initiate it.  The backup will really slow down your computer.  CrashPlan has a switch so you can control how many of the system resources are used when you are using your computer.     Carbonite didn't have this feature in the past.  I'm not sure if they added it.   I'm pretty sure that Barracuda is for organizations, meaning that it would be much more complicated to use.   I recommend a local backup because downloading all of your info from the Internet will take a long time.

The little boy in me became so excited that I didn't think about the well being of the elephant.  I don't believe in hurting animals.   Livestock, especially horses, were used extensively in war through WW II.  I don't approve of that, just reporting the history.   Humans don't have much of a track record in respecting animals.

I'll tell you what, I'll skip the Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range model air rifle and go straight for the elephant mounted machine gun any day of the week !!

I don't feel so bad now.  I needed to put grease on an SKS magazine release that was preventing the trigger group from working properly.   I didn't have any grease and was going to use lard. I told myself not to be Mr. ElCheapo and waited until I got some grease.   Based on this thread, the lard may have been just fine.
