muy importante!!! mag and sling suggestions for m-4
323ssplt replied to HillbillyMafia's topic in Long Guns
I as well really have little more to add than what has been said here. But I will relate what I have used overseas. I've used GI mags, HK and several of the PMAG varieties. What I have found is this... HK works great but is heavy. ounces equals pounds, pounds equals pain. I would generally carry about ten mags so that weight added up quickly. Pmags worked wonderfully, but as previously stated the ribs make it difficult to use them in muliple mag pouches. I did find they worked well in single mag pouches that I would use for quick reloads. Also would carry one in the rifle with no problems. I did however break a PMAG when I had to slam down on the deck rather quickly and a sharp rock hit my chest rig. GI Mags will work most of the time if new. Depends on whats in them. The old followeres were crap. The newer green followeres are OK, but I would usually replace my followeres with the Magpul anti tilt followeres and they would run great. One thing I always recommend is to get lots of GI mags and test them. My last deployment to Haditha I think I "acquired" something like 40 GI mags and tested them for the most reliable ones. BTW, Halfpint, you must be in Kilo in Memphis, right? -
OK, here is the deal. I have built several AR lowers over the past couple of years but have never attempted to build any uppers. My best friend and I were talking the other day about the several different ways we want to set up the ARs we currently have (I have three lowers that need to be utilized) and we decided to maybe start building our own uppers. So, my question to all of you knowledgeable folks out there is this: What all do I need to purchase in order to start building uppers, and what is the approximate cost. Now, I already have several punches and screwdriver sets that I have used for the lowers, so what do I need specific to the uppers. I plan on building all kinds of uppers, from standard M-4 style to long range precision etc. Thanks in advance for all the help I know I will get from you fellow TGOers PS. Mods if you think this better belongs in the Gunsmithing section please feel free to move. It was a toss up for me as to where I should post this.

I keep hearing that IOR scopes are good, but haven't heard anything really about them. Can you get them with first focul plane reticles? I am assuming that is true with the "FFP" designation in your description of the scope. What is the clarity like, etc. BTW, nice setup.

I bought one of the alloy frame P1's a few years ago. I don't shoot it much at all, but when I do it is a fun accurate gun. Plus it has a definate "cool" factor to it.

I doubt it. When I talked to Mike up at RUSA not too long ago, he was telling me how TCC was having touble keeping up with the demands of the bigger orders such as RUSA and other shooting ranges.

I use them almost exclusively for all of my target practice. Not the most reliable sometimes, but hey, it lets you practice your malfunction drills more often

This unfortunately happens to me with more frequency than I care for. Ten years ago while stationed in Virginia I was the Duty NCO when a fight broke out. The MP's were called and a report filled out. About four years later I started getting denials. Turned out that the dumbass MP's had put my SSN on the line as one of the offenders and then sent it to the FBI. Now in the meantime I held a TS-SCI clearance and gotten my HCP. I have sent letters to the MP's, TBI and the FBI and still, to this day occassionally get denied. As a matter of fact it just happened last month. All I do is fill out the appeal and send a copy of my DD214 and it usually gets overturned in a couple of days. A week at the most. Frustrating, but it happens.

God, has it already been a year. Where the hell has the time gone. I have ZERO talent, but hell, I'll even give it a shot.

On a personal note, I would have handled it far different than the sheeple father. The cops wouldn't have needed to be called only the morgue after I beat the ever loving s**t out of the guy who tried to abduct my son. And they would have needed to do DNA feasting to identify him because his face and dental records would have been useless!!!!

My wife and I were just watching the news and saw this story. I had to fill her in on the previous thread. Her response...we won't be going anywhere where we can't caryy and protect ourselves and our future children. This just highlights the reasons we moved out of Memphis ans found ourselves a great little house out in the country!!!!

I generally use the Max DEET stuff and that works, however the one time I didn't last year I got eaten up with ticks, and came down with Lyme disease to boot. Nasty stuff. Thank God my cousin is a doctor.

Ok I've watched this thread and held my tongue long enough. First, to mr. sane. I would like to know what bar you work at? Must be a pretty safe one. Sounds like a place I could have a beer or two and not worry about anything. Secondly mr. sane sounds like the typical disenfranchised youth that is being produced by our fine higher establishments of learning. They learn how to use great phrases and rhetoric to attempt to convey and validate their point. Yet underneath it all, its still just babble. A quote for mr. sane by the legendary Slim Pickens in the immortal classic "Blazing Saddles" "You sure do know how to use your mouth prettier than a ten dollar whore" Lastly, my observation about people like mr. sane. They are the ones who don't bother familiarizing themselves with such simple tasks as changing a flat tire on their car, because they "know" all they have to do is call AAA and they will come to the rescue. Ignorance is Bliss, mr. sane. That's what's wrong with society.

I kept trying to get my wife to send my Peltors, but they arrived too late for this little occurrance. Most of the time we don't/can't wear hearing pro because then you can't quietly communicate with your team and can't hear those subtle little sounds that let you know something is wrong. However, it was my fault, I took a prone position RIGHT AGAINST the damned building .If I had been smart about it, I would have crawled a few more feet away before setting up. Oh well, good guys 1, bad guys 0.1:p

Last thing......Sonic Crack.. It doesn't matter if the round is ssupersonic or not, because the bad guy doesn't hear the crack until the round is over/near him, not from where the weapon was fired. Just like being in the target butts at a compettion or rifle range.

First, after more than a decade in the Marines and having been a Scout/Sniper for many of those years I have never personally used or seen used a suppressor on a M82A1/M107 50 cal. I know they have them, but, as has been stated they wouldn't do a lot of good. The reason behind a suppressor, even on a supersonic round is threefold, 1, it does reduce the sound signature pretty well, and that sound that is emitted is "redirected" at angles away from the shooter, making it harder to pinpoin where the shot came from. Second, the suppressor reduces muzzle flash to almost nil. This is an awesome advantage for urban sniping and for engaging targets at night. Thirdly, on most guns, the suppressor actually makes the weapon more accurate. On my last deployment to Iraq, I chose to carry the MK11 almost all of the time becasue of the aforementioned benifits of having a suppressor. Our M40A3's are not so equipped. Now, as to the role of the 50 cal. It was designed as an anti-material weapon. The Marine Corps doesn't even classify it as a sniper weapon system. The reason...it doesn't meet the accuracy definition of a sniper weapon, being 1MOA. The Barrett's, most notably the older M82A1's were 3-5 MOA guns, the new M107's are better, but not by much. Therefore the Corps designated them SASR...Special Application Scoped Rifle. The one and only time I actually fired a Barrett in anger was on a mission that I was prepared for multiple vehicles and wanted something to disable them. Ended up I had to take shots at IED emplacers. I was prone next to a rock building and fired two rounds. The muzzle blast and cuncussion were so bad I knocked myself silly. And I'm still partially deaf in my left ear as well. As to sniper tactics. In places like Iraq, we roll deep. Most of our teams nowadays are 4-6 man teams. We carry enough firepower to hold our own till the cavalry can arrive i.e, we carry SAW's M203's, Claymores, LAW's and s**tloads of ammo. However, we need this many men for security as well as to bring along something as heavy as a Barrett (34 pounds plus ammo=HEAVY). A conventional sniper mission would not include something like that and would envolve 1-3 well placd shots from a bolt gun and then the team would relocate/egress. Hope this clears up some questions for you.

I'm very interested in this thread too. I finally have a house and land where I can do my own processing (when the time allows) and the wife wants to start making her own sausage. Soooooooo..........lay out the good info

I've used Glenn's before and he does a good job, just pricey. Now, just east of Moscow on 57 there is Chamber's...don't have phone number with me, but used him several times last year and was very satisfied. He'll even clean and gut the deer if you don't have time/available location to do so yourself. (actually used that service last year because of time constraints)...all told with steaks, ground and some other items about $75.

Don't worry. The two pounds of weight is not going to "dent" those high tensil strength barrels. And btw....nice avitar and screen name.. -
You scored: 9 / 10 Total points: 90 The average score for this quiz: 3 / 10 OK OK its official......I AM a gun nut. And I should have Known about Lone Wolf. It is one of my father's favorite movies.

My wife has an older style Galco. It definately works and is built like a tank. Downside is that it is so well built its heavy and on the large side for a purse, especially for a smaller woman, like my wife who is 5'1"

I had both a Polytech M-14 and a Springfield M1a super match a few yearts ago. Got rid of both when I was stationed in California and couldn't take them with me. If I were to get another M-14, it would HAVE to be another super match!!!!! That was an honest 1/2 MOA gun. I want the CETME because I don't want to fork out that much for the super match and I want a 308 battle rifle to shoot cheap ammo out of, for fun. Gotta love being a weekend warrior. I do love it, but damned, I often find myself questioning whether it is more demanding than when I was active duty.
