Lots of incidents happen fast, but lots of people are able to defend themselves. Without a gun, you stand practically no chance of winning a gunfight. With a gun, at least you have a chance.

+1 I had one of his stuffed burgers not long ago. OMG! Better than sex (from what I remember:)) I also have to put in a vote for Topps BBQ. There's one right near me and that's where I usually go when I want a burger. However, they don't all prepare them the same, apparently. The location near me makes great burgers. Sometimes, other locations don't seem to be as good. I'll have to politely disagree on Hueys. They're ok, but IMO, they're nothing special. JMO, which is worth what you paid for it. Yum's Deli makes a good burger. It's on a hoagie bun. I used to really like Dyer's. The original location (years ago when I was a little kid) was great, but it burned down when I was 7 or 8, IIRC. When they reopened, they were still pretty good. A few years ago, another one opened near my house. It was pretty good, but not as good as the location in Midtown. It's moved now and I haven't been there. In fact, I don't know where they are now.

I'm so screwed. In relation to practice, I'd add, and others have already said it, if you can't take a class for some reason, practice skills that actually relate to self defense, such as drawing from concealment, multiple targets, shooting while moving, etc. There are lists of drills to practice all over the internt (including my web page). Many people stand in a static range and shoot slowly at one target at 15 or 20 yards and never do anything else.

A bit? He definitely doesn't pull any punches, which makes him my kind of guy too.

Letter from TN Sheriffs' Association in Mail Today
robbiev replied to Luckyforward's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I tried to look it up. The only thing I could find was a statement by Sheriff Tom Wall who supports restaurant carry, where he says the TN Sheriff's Assn neither supports or opposed the bill. As far as I'm concerned, if they don't support it, they oppose it. -
I'm not making any statement as to whether she was wrong, but I would venture a guess that someone intent on robbing a joint doesn't normally come in and calmly eat lunch first (Pulp Fiction aside). However, I understand that the average non-gun person doesn't think that way. Many of them simply think "OMG. A gun! He must be up to something." In the situation described, once the LEO had left, I believe I would have come back in and removed my jacket while finishing my lunch just so there would be no question I had a gun.

I can see this argument: I'm sorry your honor. I wasn't paying attention. I thought they didn't want any ghosts. http://www.armyofinbetween.com/images/films/ghostbusters.jpg (unable to get pic to post, so just put link)

Yes, I understand that, and in fact, it was my point. As an HCP, I'm on my own deciding what I think a law means because it isn't up to me. The best way to figure it out, IMO, is to avoid places that have any type of sign. There are very few places I *HAVE* to go, so if I see somewhere that has a sign, I can just go somewhere else. Yes, which is why I stated you wouldn't necessarily win. That's always a good thing. I'm not sure about every circumstance, but that appears to be correct. I was watching someone on TV a while back day where they were talking about arrests for prostitution. They used the phrase "under arrest" for the "customers" but the police officers were shown only giving a summons (which looked remarkably like a traffic ticket) to the person. The statute says, "FAILURE TO COMPLY...IS PUNISHABLE AS A CRIMINAL ACT UNDER STATE LAW AND MAY SUBJECT THE VIOLATOR TO A FINE..." I'm guessing you could be arrested, but it may just depend on the police officer and what he feels he wants to do.

Therein lies one of the problems: the AG throws out "substantially similar" but doesn't say who gets to decide. Unfortunately, if a HCP holder believes the wording is not ss, it doesn't mean much. And it could be argued that "intent" is irrelavent (I'm not saying you'd win, I'm just saying it could be argued). If a business owner doesn't comply with what the law says he has to do, it could be argued that I didn't break any law. ETA: IE: A business can post a big sign with a picture of a gun and a slash through it. It's pretty clear that the intent is no guns, but the AG has specifically said that doesn't count.

Just a personal curiosity question: Is “Weapons are Not Permitted on the property of Charter Communication.” substantially similar to the wording in the statute? I'm not saying a cop couldn't or wouldn't arrest someone in this case, but personally, I don't feel (and it's merely MO) that this one sentence is substantially similar to the paragraph given in the statute.

In a strict answer to the question you asked: That sign does not appear to meet the legal requirements set forth in TN law (IMO). The wording (IMO) is not "substantially similar" to the wording in the statute. Just plain curiousity, not trying to start a flame war: How did they know you were carrying?

Some police departments allow officers to practice as much as they want to at the academy, or at the very least, some number of rounds each month, however many officers choose not to take advantage of that. Most of the cops I know shoot twice a year (in some places, it's only once a year) and then only because the department requires it. If I could go to a range somewhere and shoot for free, I'd be there, but most of the guys I know aren't interested in it enough to practice even once a month.

Welcome to Memphis. I see the car question was already answered. If you're interested, my web page has a bunch of TN info, plus links to local shooting matches and other activities. http://www.rrmemphis.com

Wait, somehow, I think I'm offended at that remark. Robbie -I have to stand on tip toes to be 5 feet tall- V

There are parts of Memphis that are like that. I live on a street that is 2 blocks long and has three different names and goes in two directions. The city can't even get the names right. I live on a "drive" but a couple of years ago, the city put up a new street sign that save "ave." I called and asked about it and was told they knew it was incorrect, but they had already put the sign up, so it was easier to change the name of the street than it was to correct the sign.

All of my close friends know I carry. In general, I don't feel any need to tell people. If I felt the need to inform people I had a gun, I would feel the need to tell them that I had a knife, pepper spray, cell phone, wallet, keys, etc. The gun is a piece of equipment. If I know someone doesn't want or allow guns in there house, I don't go there. I have an issue with one friend of mine. He knows I carry, and for some reason, he feels the need to mention it constantly, to anyone I am around. I've asked him several times not to do it, but he still does. I don't hang around him much any more.

I don't, but YMMV

For me, I shoot faster (and just as accurately) with both eyes open, but as some others have said, I'm sure it depends on the person.

Ok. I used to be that fast, but I don't know if I am now. Over the last couple of years, I've gained a bunch of weight, and that has slowed me down a little, but I'm on a diet (already lost 21 lbs), so maybe I'll get it back one day! -

would/do you carry to a doctor appointment
robbiev replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I carry when I go. My doctor doesn't seem to mind, and if he did, I'd go elsewhere. He's never seen the gun, but he's seen the holster and spare mag. I carry my briefcase when I go to the doctor (or anywhere I might have to take off the gun). If it's necessary to take the gun off, I go into an exam room, put it in the briefcase and just keep the briefcase with me at all times. -
I have a wide variety of jobs. I play the trumpet professionally...mostly professionally anyway. I'm also a shooting instructor. That's what I do mostly. I have other various hobbies where I make money too.

Evan, Maybe one day, with lots of practice, you'll be able to reload fast!
