HCP Instructors.......What's On Your "I Love Me" Wall ?
robbiev replied to BigPoppa's topic in Training Discussions
(excuse the semi-rambling) I agree, depending on the class. If I go take a tactics class, then yes, I prefer to take a class from someone who actually knows a little about the subject. However, in reference to one of my previous statements, and not directly related to anything you said, "I used to be a cop" in and of itself, to me, isn't good enough. I want to know what the actual experience is. *I* can truthfully say I used to be a cop, but it's a technicality. I was never an active duty officer. I just had a badge. (a side note, I never tell people I used to be a cop) Contrastly, if I go take a class to teach me how to shoot faster and more accurately, I'd prefer to have someone that can shoot fast AND who can teach me what he knows. If that's the only thing I'm there for, to me, his other credentials are somewhat irrelavent, in that context. In short: I'm only interested in relevant experience. Many people are only interested in whether someone is or was (insert whatever here) even if it isn't directly relevant to the subject at hand. -
I don't think that's what the post meant. I believe he was commenting that even Jesus told his disciples to go get swords (the sidearm of the day) if they didn't have one. On the other issue: Others have said it, "Thou shald not murder" (or kill unjustly) is the original phrase. I think it's pretty clear considering that the Bible is full people being killed with God's approval, and the fact that God condoned killing animals. He clearly did not mean "Never kill, ever." The original Hebrew word is "ratsach" which is normally translated as "murder" and not just "kill." The only issue you should have is if your grandfather is one of the "The KJV is the only real Bible" people, or if he just simply chooses not to believe you.

Just an update, you can go to spike.com each week after Wednesday and watch that week's episodes. This week, a friend of mine was on the episode (although, I haven't watched it yet). Going there now.

"Waffle house is as much a part of our life as our kids are." that's funny right there. The only thing that could have been better is if she had said, "After we had our 5th kid, my cousin and me decided we better get hitched."

Uh, yeah. I thought it was pretty obvious the mall ninja comment was a joke referring to that thread a while back where the guy claimed to be "special forces" at the mall. I didn't think anybody took that as any kind of personal insult, or even ANY kind of insult. -

Here ya go. http://www.rrmemphis.com/ninja.ppt The class is free, but my signature costs $150. -
There was an incident just a few years ago (after 9/11) where a guy discharged an "empty" rifle of some kind. I don't recall where it happened, though.

Is 11 pounds really all that much? I've never weighed ammo, but putting a couple of hundred rounds in a bag makes it a lot heavier. Of course, I know most of the time, you wouldn't carry that much ammo unless you're going to a shooting match somewhere.

I used to keep up with everything I have done, and I still have everything in a folder somewhere, but here is a basic rundown: State of TN handgun instructor NRA: Several disciplines Law enforcement: have trained with quite a few instructors, but I don't have any official certification, and I do some training of LEOs. IDPA: SO instructor, and former Area Coodinator (gave it up a couple of years ago because I didn't have time to go to matches very often) I've taken classes from a bunch of different instructors, and numerous schools; pistol, rifle, sniper, contact weapons, and I compete in IDPA and IPSC matches. I used to keep up with the details of every school I attended, but I found out a long time ago that if you can't say "I used to be a cop" the average Joe couldn't care less what your other credentials are, so for the most part, I don't talk about it much. -
I have a commodore 64 emulator that I use to play games all the time. When I was a teenager, I was really into C64.

I think it's common for larger churches to have security that walks around the parking lot.

Not in TN. Once you get the permit, you can carry any handgun you legally possess. Some ranges suggest that you "qualify" with every gun you might ever carry, but it isn't required by any law. The reason ranges suggest it (other than they get to charge you a fee) is for protection in civil court in case you use the gun in self defense, to prove you have been trained with it. Opinions vary on whether that is really necessary. No, the fee paid at the range goes only to the range. The state charges another $115 (I think) to get the permit.

I play the trumpet. It takes up most of my spare time.

My plans for carry at church have not changed because of the Knoxville church incident. My opinion has, however, been reinforced because of it. My plans for church carry are, and have always been, just that. Carry. Come to think of it, my plans for life are pretty much that. Carry. Period. If you see me out somewhere and I don't have a gun, there's some EXTREMELY extenuating circumstance, like, I'm in the courthouse, and even then I have a contingency plan. Many people ask questions like, "Should I carry at church?" or "Should I carry since I'm only going right down the street?" For me, personally, I don't understand that line of thinking (and I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, I'm just saying I don't understand it). If I'm outside my house, I've got a gun on me. I don't have time to worry about which places I think I should carry. It's possible you could need a gun anywhere, no matter how safe you think it might be.

Dude, come on, get real. Mine has pink mother-of-pearl grips. Now THAT'S class! http://www.pistoletchik.ru/library/gallery/lorcin_25acp.jpg

I recalled one incident. Once, a few years ago, at the church I used to attend, the head of security asked an off-duty (I'm assuming, anyway) but fully uniformed police officer to leave his gun in the car because it would scare people.

I go back and forth from growing a goatee to shaving it off. I can't decide which way I look less goofy. I'm beginning to lean towards no beard, since the last time I had one, I noticed a couple of gray hairs.

I can't swear to this, but I believe it's correct. I am a state certified instructor, however, I haven't taught a "basic" permit class in several years. I don't think the state specifies whether the shooting has to be SA or DA. If I remember correctly, the state says that the shooting should be done from between 3 and 25 yards. Some ranges only require shooting out to about 15 yards.

That exact joke was a running gag on an episode of "Still Standing."

I go to Friday's in Southaven quite a bit. Theirs are really good. I usually get the boneless wings, but they regular wings are pretty good too.

Personally, I prefer to carry concealed. IMO, it's simply no one else's business what I do, as long as it's legal, and carrying concealed prevents them from knowing. There are also other reasons I don't carry openly. Mainly, it can prevent SOME issues. Just as a complete sidenote, I understand that churches are an off-limits location in MS. Someone who went to church in say, MS, might run into problems if they didn't carry concealed, and, for that matter, even though it's perfectly legal in TN to carry in a church, someone still might run into problems if they carried openly. Especially, if that person, lets just say, played an instrument and was on stage. I'm sure that could apply to any public gathering that a person attended. Even though it might be legal to carry a gun at the location, it might be a good idea to be discreet about it. So, in my opinion (which is worth everything you paid for it) in most circumstances, I think it's better to carry concealed. IIRC, most people here feel the same way.

Dude, did you have to remind me? I see the father quite a bit at the casinos in Tunica. He looks worse in real life than he ever did on TV. Pic of the Watson girl. She's was only 28 in that picture? http://www.theindychannel.com/2006/0525/9271814_240X180.jpg ETA: Somebody beat me to it. Side note: she's apparently from Indiana, but I know several people here that swear they went to school with her here.

I can't say anything specific about the class, but I know Doc personally (although, I haven't seen him in a while). If I had to guess, I'd guess the class is, at the very least, as good as you can get anywhere else, but probably better. Was that nice and generic enough?

Thanks. I'll have to make a trek out there one day and try them.
