  1. She was very worried she would not pass the shooting part. The instructor is a friend of mine and insisted she bring home her target to show me. I don't think she needed to worry.

    1911's

I've had several Metro Arms cross my bench now, and I have to say that I'm impressed with their guns. Particularly when you consider the price point.
  3. Thanks everyone!!! I really appreciate the feedback. I just charge for my time on the machine. So, it depends on what you want. Feel free to PM and I will be glad to help you if I can. Dolomite, I used a vertical mill. If you get one just be sure to get one big/heavy/rigid enough so that you don't get end mill chatter. Small ones will make the clean up so intense that you might as well do it by hand. Thanks for the kind words Mike.
  4. The slide cracked on this gun. Put a new top end on it. Tried some new slide cuts. What do ya think??
  5. That story really sounds like total Incompetence on behalf of Taurus. wow........
  6. The easiest way to measure headspace is with a set of "go" "no go" gauges. Midway and Brownells have these. You can use a set of calipers and a feeler gauge it you know the numbers. For 45 the minimum is .898 and the maximum is .920. I cut mine to .906. Remember you have to measure from the breach face and not just from the end of the hood.
  7. He might be talking about pushing down on the barrel when locked up, and the barrel moving down? If so, not uncommon either, particularly for those years of colts. It means that the barrel is fitted poorly. What does excessive mean??? It's kind of a feel thing but I have felt probably (guessing here) .020 + or -.
  8. Gun Sane is suppose to come get it tomorrow but if for some reason that doesn't work out I'll let you know. Tim
  9. So, I have a pro 1000 just sitting here not being used. If anyone could use it I will be happy to give it to you. I'm just west of Nashville. Tim
  10. I imagine the same folks that dislike them on the XD don't like them on a 1911 either. The fact is that many people have trouble with grip safeties and even with a good grip they don't disengage sometimes. It seems like folks with big meaty hands suffer the most. The XDs , grip safety (unlike the 1911) actually blocks the sear and since the XD is a true single action pistol it is really necessary. (the 1903 colt hammerless grip safety was the same) Dolomite covered most of what I would say about the 1911s grip safety. I will just add that in addition to pinning or disabling the 1911 gs, you can adjust it so that is still works but takes very little movement to disengage, making it a non issue while still having a fully functioning gun.
  11. Well, it's hard to beat a nice revolver pocket pistol. Heck you don't even need to take it ouf of your coat pocket to shoot and it will run 100% LOL
  12. My pleasure! :-) Yep, the extractor can be a problem and is responsible for the majority of running problems I see in all sizes. I have replaced some that I swear were not even tempered, and from popular manufacturers no less. I recommend and install aftec extractors in almost 100% of the guns I build. Really helps with higher pressure rounds like the 9 and 40. If installed right they are really a "set it and forget it" fix to the problem. The 45 does not nearly have the pressure, so I don't hesitate to use a traditional extractor and am happy to fit any quality extractor like EGW or Ed Brown etc..., but really insist upon the aftec for the high pressure stuff. Congrats on the 36 BTW!!! It's always a good day when you can buy a new toy!!
  13. I will agree that the mil spec was "loose" and designed to take 10 guns apart, throw all the parts in a box shake them up and grab the parts and put 10 pistols together. But in my experience, tight guns run better than loose guns if built right. The problem is, as the pistol gets tighter the importance of a perfect fit gets more and more crucial. Factory guns fail at this miserably.
  14. The P938/238 should not suffer the same gremlins as a micro 1911. It has a lot of features of a 1911 but is not a 1911. The barrel locks up and comes in and out of battery totally different. The extractor is the same but the ejector is not. So, like many 1911s from the factory you could have extractor issues. They are either too tight, too loose, the hook to breach face distance is not correct or the firing pin stop is not fit right and allows the extractor to turn in the tunnel. The failure in Rob's video is almost certainly an extractor issue. I just can't see why the factories allow so many guns to come out like this, but they do. Notice the angle of the barrel in the sig verses the 1911 when out of battery. (I did not have a micro 1911 in the shop just a 4") Look at how the different system allows for the barrel to sit lower in the frame and where the rounds are in comparison. Plus a smaller round sits higher in the magazine too. But look at how the bottom of the chamber in the sig is actually below the frame rails and the 45 is above. Look at how far the 45 has to go and the angle it has to negotiate.
  15. The Bostitch set at lowes are not bad. Brownells is a good option for really good ones.
  16. I understand, but the ramp angles are different, the way they come in and out of battery are different, the angle that the barrel is in when contacting the impact surface is different, the ejector, extractor all different ect.. Several of these things make it easier for a glock to overcome the short stroke, fat round, heavy spring deal. That was what I was trying to say. Just poorly. Sorry.
  17. Well, I think the 36 uses a single stack mag, but that is about the only similarity.
  18. Pretty much agree with him about the micro's........ Short stroke + heavy spring + fat round = many potential issues

  20. Good to know about the 5R. I can sure attest to the toughness of the S&W finish. I just finished a slide for a M&P race gun and the hardest thing about doing the cuts was getting through the finish.
  21. I just charge you more than everyone else!
  22. That slide looks familiar.
  23. The only thing that concerns me about this gun is that for some reason Remington changed the impact surface where the barrel hits during link down. I think they upped the chances of shearing the lower lugs off the barrel considerably. It will be interesting to see what happens once these guns get over 5k down the pipe.
  24. Wow, sounds like Varget is the deal. Guess I'll get some and give it a shot. Not sure if I'll do the 165's or 150's??? Thanks guys!!!!
