    1911 Question

38 super is a great round for a 1911 and it was basically the first round the 1911 was designed around. JMB made the change to 45 to make a bid for the military contract. I own 1911's in 38s, 40, and 45. I prefer the 45 for carry and the 40 and 38s for competition. The M1911 Pistols Organization Home Page
  2. I have often thought that the state should offer an expanded version carry permit. The idea is this- Since no one seems to have a problem with police carrying everywhere because the public perception is they are very well trained and therefore safe. You simply require the expanded carriers to go through the same firearms training that a cadet does before they put them out on the street with a gun. There by allowing a holder of the expanded carry to carry everywhere the police can. If you combine all the firearms training a cadet receives it could easily be condensed in a 3 day period (This according to my metro pd friends and please correct me if they are wrong). Therefore, with the same training as a cop, it would be hard for the left to argue that a citizen with these credentials could not carry in places xyz. Thoughts?
  3. Well, I'd love to add a 1050 to the list but I just can't see that happenig and staying married. LOL
  4. Wow, you have a lot on your list. 2 things for me, a bullet feeder for my 650 and an Dillon auto primer.
  5. It seems that the constitution disagrees with you dave. ARTICLE SIX OF THE CONSTITUTION All Debts contracted and Engagements entered into, before the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation. This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding. The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States..) Clause two provides that the Constitution, federal laws made pursuant to it and treaties made under its authority, constitute the supreme law of the land. It provides that state courts are bound by the supreme law; in case of conflict between federal and state law, the federal law must be upheld. Even state constitutions are subordinate to federal law.
  6. Unfortunately I was OCing and was shot in the head before I knew what was going on. Just kiddin'
  7. That was awesome. I have to say that being a 1911 guy I really want to like Springfield and still do I guess. But the last two guns I have bought from SA (4" 1911 and 5" XD) both had to go back because the best groups they would print at 25yds were between 6-8 inches not matter what ammo I used. I will say that when they came back both shot respectable groups and both guns always ran perfectly. But I was dissapointed for the hasstle. Maybe I'm just really unlucky.
  8. Thought this was interesting: Sorry if this has been posted before. It was the first time I saw it so I thought some others might like to read it. Larry Vickers Sand Test Just had a chance to do a harsh sand test on few different handguns. This test was not scientific but was very enlightening. Pistols tested were; HK USP Tactical Customized 1911 rack grade GI 1911 Glock 21 Test consisted of placing each pistol loaded in a Bianchi GI field holster inside a plastic bag with approx 2 cups of fine/medium grit sand ( North Carolina type). Then the bag was shaken vigorously for 10 seconds while holding onto the pistol butt for safety. The pistol was then taken out and 3 mags were fired through the 1911 and 2 fully loaded mags were fired through the HK and Glock - roughly the same amount of ammo. The sand coverage was very good and uniformly covered the pistols. The pistols were loaded in the mode you would expect in a field environment - condition 3 for the 1911, loaded for the Glock and loaded in DA mode for the USP.A test was done dry and lubed with TW 25B. This test represented EXTREME sand conditions - not normal field use, even in sandy conditions.A brief rundown of the results follow; 1)Carrying your gun dry in this environment is a NO GO despite what some will say. All pistols performed worse dry than lubed. 2)All pistols required some manipulation in order to fire - none would function normally straight out of the holster. 3)Overall the HK USP performed the best - the performance of it dry was roughly the same as the customized 1911 but was definately the best lubed. Overall it performed well. 4)The custom 1911 was second - interestingly enough the trigger track was not a real problem - the sand that went in through the ejection port to the bottom lugs area caused the most problems. Once the sand shifted in this area the pistol functioned better. 5)The rack grade GI 1911 was a distant third - the custom 1911 had an 18 pound recoil spring and that helped with feeding greatly vs the rack grade gun. Swap out the recoil spring and it probably would have done better. 6)The shocker of the day - the Glock 21 FAILED terribly. The big problem was failure of the trigger to reset. Also at times the pistol would not fire due to sand in the trigger mechanism. The dry test could not even be completed with the Glock due to this. This surprised all of us as we expected the Glock to do quite well. Moral of the story; The 1911, even in its customized mode, can get the job done if you set it up to succeed. Lube it right, carry it in the right holster and in the proper mode, and it won't let you down - just like it hasn't for nearly a 100 years. The HK USP series are good guns - well designed and well made - for service pistols. The ergonomics hurt the pistol dramatically but for an out of the box service pistol/field gun, they get my endorsement. The Glock 21 is a dog - always has been. It has the rep of being the worst gun Glock makes. I have a Glock 17 and 19 and like them for what they are - but don't get sucked into the Glock hype - they are not magical guns. Remember what your dad said when you were in 3rd grade; don't believe everything you read. Hope you guys got something out of this - I did. Larry Vickers
  9. BTW, his name is Rob Romero and he is a GM USPSA shooter.
  10. He is the only one so far that can do it (that I know about). I have worked on this until my arm hurt and it is very tough to do with any consistency. The secret is to have a dead stop at the end of the throw. I have not tried it with a glock but I think it might be easier to do with a glock with a light trigger and of course light recoil spring. But it is very cool.
  11. I hunted deer for an 11 year period with nothing but handguns. I took many with my 1911 in .45 and it did good job. Most all were taken inside 40 yards. Have fun.
  12. It's not the wrong application. Hand loaders have been forever changing different components including primers. Many common cartridges started out as wildcat cartridges that came from this same group. And let me quote from my Hornady Hand book of Cartridge Reloading. "Never substitute a magnum primer for a top load you have developed using a standard primer. This change in components, as any component change, can cause unexpected pressure differences. If a component is changed, always start at the lowest powder charge listed and work upwards". But never do something you don't feel comfortable doing.
  13. A good one if you have not seen it.
  14. I have a summer special for my commanders and like it just fine, but I'm thinking about ordering the VM2 to try. Have you ever carried a summer special for comparison? If so, any thoughts?
  15. Wow! Six years in graduate school??? Obviously you needed a couple more. Yes, the old testament talks about an eye for an eye and people were stoned to death for sin, but nowhere will you find either convert, enslave or kill non believers. HUGE, HUGE, HUGE DIFFERENCE.
  16. Just curious, what was the malfunction? Can you describe it?
  17. Shoot, long gone are the days of "race it on Sunday and sell it on Monday". It doesn't matter what they are called since pretty much the only thing that really represents any of the manufacturers products are the stickers on the front of the cars. Hell, it might as well be IROC. I think they went the wrong way with the frames etc. I still watch but my heart is not nearly as in it as it was once before. How does the song go..........money changes everything.
  18. Same here, extra mag inside. All they did was add a button under the thumb safety. No big deal. It is an awesome little gun 300+ rounds so far with zero problems. Great little back up gun or quick trip to the store gun.
  19. As for me, I will be asking if our school is participating, and if so I will pull my kid from school during this. Not on my watch obama!!!! Not now.....not ever!!!!!! STAY AWAY FROM MY KIDS!!!!!!
  20. I think it is important to note that trigger jobs for glocks, xds, m&ps and the like are all trying to achieve what the 1911 does naturally. What they are trying to do with varied success is: 1. reduce the pre-travel 2. make a clean break 3. reduce over-travel 4. Reduce re-set distance. 5. And reduce weight. (this is the least important particularly once you have reached 3.5-4.5 lbs.) This is why the 1911 will endure and be used by the most talented shooters on the planet by a huge majority. They get it.
