    1911? :)

I know many of those guys on that thread. I've shot with Airedale (Dave) the guy with the RIA and if the gun is like most factory guns used in USPSA, I doubt there is much left on that gun that you can justify calling it an RIA anymore but I don't know for sure. He is more of a revolver shooter as well if memory serves (and I think C or B class maybe). Besides, as long as the gun runs and is accurate enough to hit where it is suppose to it matters little what name is on it. Now weather the gun will beat itself to death in 50K or not is another question and is largely dependent on if the gun was reworked and by who. Most factory guns that run great (or not) out of the box are fitted to poorly to get long enough life out of the gun for folks who shoot 30+ thousand a year. And of course the cheaper parts (MIM) adds to the problem. We need to get together over some beers and talk 1911s sometime for those here that are interested. There is much to say about all of this, but I don't have the strength to write it.
  2. Started my son out on a 25-06 and I down loaded the ammo a little. This year was his first year. If I were to buy my son a new one it would be a 7mm08. I also like 243 and 257 Roberts.
  3. I'm going on Sunday!!!! YeeeeeeHaaaa!!!!!! 11 degrees!!!!!! I'm your huckleberry!!!!!! My son will be there too............shooting limited now.
  4. One of my favorite videos of all time......................
  5. We were in Bedford County (Everett/Bedford area) not far at all from Somerset. I have family in Somerset actually and hunt there too sometimes. The new laws and point restriction has definitely affected the herd. Not near as many dear around in general, but it was simply getting out of control so it was probably a good thing to a degree. But I fear it has swung too far the other way...... I have heard many reports from friends who didn't see a deer the first morning at all. That is almost unbelievable since those same spots I use to see tons of deer (maybe mostly does but still tons of deer).
  6. That's great! It's so great to see young ones putting the video games down and getting out there and finding out how awesome it is to hunt and fish.
  7. Basically you are breaking all the squared edges (melting them if you will). You do it with a file, dremel, 1" belt sander, polishing wheel etc.......everyone does things slightly different.
  8. Ya gotta wear a bunch of orange anyway...........
  9. It's a 25-06. I bought another BDL stock from a member here and cut it down to fit him and kept the original for when he gets older. Loaded some softer loads with nosler partitions and they did a great job and dropped the deer within 10 yards.
  10. He got this Monday morning in PA. I'm not sure who was more excited. He was jumping up and down and I think folks from the next county could hear him celebrating.
  11. My friend Matt is very talented and I learned a lot this past weekend about how to use a mill in many other aspects of a build other than slide cuts. I have always done most everything by hand with files, thinking that in the end you will gain the best possible fit etc. But I have to say that as soon as I get a mill after the first of the year, I will be changing how I fit/cut many things. The fact is, there is/was no payoff (in quality) doing it the old school way. And it takes about 1/8 of the time.
  12. It's an STI frame and slide. The total weight of the gun is 34 oz and the slide by itself weighs 12.7 oz.
  13. It was an older Bridgeport manual. We didn't even use a DRO, but we did use a power feed when we could.
  14. Here are some more pics as it was coming together.
  15. I put about one hundred rounds through it this past Monday to sight it in and start breaking it in. It fed great, and I expect to have zero problems. Usually a gun this tight will have several malfs in the first 200 rounds and then run flawless if it is built right. This one went together nicely and both the slide to frame and barrel fit is about as good as one can expect and I'm very happy with it. I thought we put on the wrong front sight height at first since I started to run out of travel with the rear sight, but it finally got there. I will definitely be buying a mill after the first of the year.......it is so much better and easier IMO to build top notch hand built guns with one. What a fun weekend!!!!
  16. A 1911 is like a beautiful woman. There may be some that are more beautiful but they are all beautiful. Congratulations.
  17. Yep, I have to say I'm excited about shooting it and seeing what I can do with it.
  18. I wish I could have been there:(...........sounded like a fun match.
  19. No just a vertical mill. I went up to a friends house this weekend and we spent the whole weekend building this.
  20. First I lean toward STI. I shoot a ton of rounds per year through them and own 5 right now. I've owned about every make and model in the past including colts, springers, Ed Browns, Nighthawks and Kimbers. For the money STI is the way to go, and I love the folks over there. However, if you are talking about a 45, I believe that a non ramped barrel is better for that fat round. When that frame ramp is cut right and the barrel is throated correctly a traditional non ramped barrel is in my opinion a better option than a ramped barrel for multiple bullet noses. I don't believe STI offers a non ramped option in 45. Any other caliber a ramped barrel is the way to go. Will a ramped barrel run in 45? Absolutely, but I believe the fit to the frame has to be near perfect and sometimes need tweaking even when in spec. That said, I would not be afraid to buy anything from STI since they will take care of their customers. FWIW
  21. If that is the case, I would check the extractor for tension and or clocking.
  22. This looks like the case is hitting the slide when ejecting. Pretty normal on short guns really. I would ignore it. An officers model has so little opportunity getting that fat case out anyway, and getting the ejector/extractor tuned to eliminate this could prove frustrating (but possible).
