  1. Went out this afternoon not really expecting to see anything but I got a new chair for my stand so went to drop it off in it and try the sage smoke in my trailer for those darn Asian beetles. Nothing moved, no squirrels, not many birds until late in the afternoon. Had about 15 minutes of light when two does stepped out but I couldn't get a good sight of them through the brush. When this guy stepped right into the dirt path and presented a great shot. I tried to weigh him but I could not raise him all the way up so his head was still on the ground, but he registered 130lbs so I guess he's about 140 or 150 lbs. I plan on trying a european mount with him, hope it comes out ok. "Freedom is the sure possession of those alone who have the courage to defend it." ~Pericles~
  2. Well sure, it's always what "could" happen.  Otherwise I, like many here, just wouldn't go anywhere where it "will" happen.  I am not saying don't deploy it, I am saying don't bet your life on it.  I have enough training to where I would feel comfortable dealing with an unarmed assailant, but the problem is, you just don't know for certain if they are armed or not.  And once you get into a wrestling match with an unarmed assailant and you are armed, he can become armed by taking yours.     If my choice is between lethal and non lethal equipment, I choose lethal.  I base my choice on the fact that I don't get into situations that only require non lethal engagement, or lethal for that matter.  I have no problem walking away from a belligerent individuals, and I don't present an easy target, yet.  And in case you are wondering, yes I have been pepper sprayed, been in CS gas and even tasered as part of my army training and it's not a pleasant experience.  I have also been hit with sim munitions and had one of my plates hit with 7.62.  So I know what certain things will do and not do and I certainly would not do anything to get pepper sprayed.  But there are many out there that do not know how it feels, and if you care to; look up how many spray themselves, taser themselves and yes, even get shot with ballistic vests on because, well they are stupid.
  3. Yea, that day stunk, but look on the bright side; you have the makings for a good dinner :yum: ...too soon?
  4. What i meant by ineffective are multifold; First, in this circumstance I consider an item to be effective if it prevents a crime and or injury.  The ineffectiveness of an item is directly proportional to the fear of the perpetrator, or victim, of that item.  Many people that have not been sprayed, or even seen someone sprayed, don't fear pepperspray.  And while that product may be the best; it's not so much better that a criminal would say " its kimber brand, I better stop".  If a criminal is bound and determined to hurt you, pepperspray may not do it, hell at 10 feet a gun may not do it so that too may not be effective.   He makes some good points, and in this case he may be correct, but my problem with this is that it puts more people in jeopardy by making them think they have to tell a criminal they are too close before defending themselves.  I do think everyone needs to be more situationally aware, but in parking lots its difficult to know when someone is trying to get to their vehicle or to you.  When my course has someone loading their vehicle I go around, unless they are right next to my vehicle, and in that case I wait behind my truck.  I still find that situation a bit suspect, why would you approach a little old lady loading her groceries for a light?  Why would you not get a lighter, or have one already as a smoker?
  5. Yea, being a new dad is time consuming.  I can't wait until she is old enough to ask her dad for a .40 of her own  :stir:
  6. From: http://www.knoxnews.com/news/watchful-eye/knox-da-law-on-side-of-homeowner-who-killed-burglar_55373802 Emphasis mine.  Ok, Comms, when are you getting another .40?
  7. I don't usually hang them, the ones I keep I place them in a fridge I gutted all the shelves out of at under 40 deg, usually between 36 and 38 degrees.  The large doe I got last week had two bags of ice in the cavity because the processor had closed, but she did quite well overnight which was in the 50s.
  8. No, the entrance wound does not mean no threat exists.  Someone can fire at you then turn away, or fire at you when he is trying to escape.  The circumstances surrounding the shooting, and any relationship with the target may lead to a determination of a bad shoot but the shot placement in and of itself is not the determining factor.
  9. Here is my stance, we already have reporting triggers.  Deposit or withdraw over a certain amount, buy over 5 (I think) guns within a few days, certain amount of fertilizer,  etc etc you get investigated.  If you have legitimate reasons, you go on your way no harm no foul.  There is no reason that in at least four locations across the country middle eastern men should be purchasing that many phones so closely synchronized (relatively).  In the case of the California incident, a missed opportunity to have them investigated was missed, just to be PC.   We have entered into a new era, we are being attacked physically and ideologically and we need to fight back.  If it means throwing out all that PC crap then so be it.  We all profile, whether we admit it or not; if a crime is predominantly being committed by a certain group, and if someone in that group does something suspicious report it, period.  Not reporting it is detrimental to fighting back.
  10. I disagree, at 22 you should be mentally mature enough to rationalize the situation better.  Many of us enlisted at 18 and had to make life and death decisions soon after.  While I agree that the death penalty was a bit much; its hard to have sympathy for someone's stupidity.  The guy was from Florida, knew there were alligators all over the places and still decided to take refuge there.   My very first alligator encounter was at Camp Blanding Joint Training Center, we did a nighttime airfield seizure and I was in a canal providing security with a 6' alligator as my assistant gunner all night.  On first light, I look over and there it was about 8-10 feet away...I guess he wasn't hungry.  If I had any indication there were alligators about I would of picked a better spot.
  11. I didn't think it was directed at me, were good.  Just contributing to the conversation; on the meat hunters side of things as I see it.  As for shooting the first deer, I have always taken the first deer I see for the season; that way I have meat in the freezer and can let some of the others walk.  I don't have the mentality of if its brown its down, just the first deer of the season.  I will take a large buck, or a large doe; I don't just hunt the tender ones.  But I have no problem just taking does either, or just bucks for that matter.  I primarily hunt for the meat, whether it has horns or not is second.  But like I said, I have no problem with how others want to manage their property/leases; as long as they don't try to make it a regulation.   I have been stationed at places where they put antler restrictions and places where anything goes, and I don't have a problem with either for the most part.  The thing about the reduction in numbers of buck this year is that they did it for the entire state, and the state needs localized management.  While East TN may have a quantity/quality issue, here in the middle (unit L) we have what I consider to be an over abundance of deer.  We need to harvest more does, and I would of had no problem with a reg that made you take a doe or two before a buck could be taken(in unit L);  I think Ft Campbell does that.  But like I said, I don't really like to regulate too much; specially because some, like me are already taking does.  Maybe more hunter PSAs talking about managing the deer populations to specific goals, less deer or more mature bucks, can get some of the hunters to hunt a certain way.
  12. I look at like this; a burglar if confronted will not quietly go away and will fight to keep himself out of jail.  If he has to hurt you or your family to get away, he probably will; look at that 6 year old that got stabbed/murdered.  What the hell could a 6 year old do to warrant that?  No, a burglar forfeits his life by entering my home, period.   As for the alligator, I say deputize it.
  13. Yea, no.  The button buck I recently dropped had more than that.  I have no problem with clubs, or those with private property, practicing QDM, but I just don't see it.  I have only 8 acres, and as stated I drop mainly does but will take a buck if it's the first deer I see.  There are two hunt clubs on either side of me with 600 or more acres, I can assure you "their" bucks don't stay in their area.  Even QDMA says they don't stay put: http://www.northcountrywhitetails.com/articles/buttonbuck.htm
  14. Because some papers don't report anything that may give gun owners a positive spin: http://www.kgw.com/story/news/2014/07/24/12405148/   Though it may or may not have been due to the CCW holder, he shot himself after seeing him.
  15. Oh, oh, oh, tell him you're shooting .40 out of it!
  16. My wife got direct TV to get the NFL package, worst service ever, and even worse support.  We had U-Verse but when we heard they merged we figured they could offer the NFL package, but nooo.  First, they installed an older model genie which we later found out they knew it had issues.  Then, when we reported the issues they said they would send the newer model, but it never arrived, and on a follow up call they told my wife they would not send out a new one until the older ones were gone, they have warehouses full.  Three times we tried, being told the other guy was wrong, but after the third time when they sent an old box, I had enough and cancelled.  They tried to charge me a cancellation fee, but I told them we had been trying to get them to live up to their end of the contract since the first week, and considered them in breach.  The supervisor agreed, so now we're back to U-Verse and will miss my Broncos game this weekend.
  17. I would let a gunsmith do the actual work of adjusting your sights.  But I would try and have someone work with you on making sure you are not making the gun's Point of Impact (POI) shift.  The target above is very good at giving you indicators on what you need to work on, but a second set of eyes helps a lot too.
  18. Send it back to benchmade, they will fix it under warranty.  But, that doesn't mean you can't get a new one too.
  19. I'm in the meat camp, I have no problem dropping a spike, split or doe.  As long as they are out of spots, they will drop.  As a matter of fact, I would rather eat them young than old.  I will drop a bigger buck, but I am not actively looking for them.  Last year I took four does, this year I have one doe and a button buck so far.

    Pearl Harbor

What is sad is that there has been no mention today in the media I have been listening to.  Any network having any Pearl Harbor stories today?  I see 9/11 going the same route, how soon we forget, just to have it repeat time and time again.
  22. Congratulations, get your supply of rocksalt loads ready, they grow up fast.
  23. Didn't I see a link to free TSA working dogs?  Might be something to look into.
  24. I must be the anomaly, I usually have three mags for my handguns and no more than 7 per AR.  That was always my basic load and if it worked on active duty I figure it will work now.
  25. That is for the license, you still need the course:  https://www.tn.gov/twra/article/hunter-education
