I'd categorize the whole security/police thing into about 5 columns based on training and what they are allowed to do. 1.Security Guards unarmed 2.Security Officers armed and unarmed 3.Campus Security armed and unarmed 4.Campus Police 5.City/County/State Police I fall into #3 as I figure most healthcare/college campus officers would. I think the people Adamween are referring to would be in the 1 or 2 category and will be wishing you a happy day from the Wackenhut truck or at the movie theater if you live here in Memphis lol Although the movie theater guys here are something to behold, but I think they are mostly off duty PD.

Ok and your relevant point to the discussion? Even if they "beat the charge" it doesn't mean the arrest was bad. Charges get dropped or lowered all the time. You're right that no one but police have true powers of arrest, but TN law is very clear about what's required for a citizen's arrest. There is also a difference between the amount of training and type of guard that small businesses hire and contract, and the type of security officers that a multi-billion dollar organization hires to protect it's staff, campus, and interests armed or not. Seems like a couple people are talking out of their ass in this thread.

Thank ya sir. Specifically this part Mad Squirrel. 40-7-109. Arrest by private person — Grounds. — (a) A private person may arrest another: (1) For a public offense committed in the arresting person's presence; (2) When the person arrested has committed a felony, although not in the arresting person's presence; or (3) When a felony has been committed, and the arresting person has reasonable cause to believe that the person arrested committed the felony. ( A private person who makes an arrest of another pursuant to the provisions of §§ 40-7-109 — 40-7-115 shall receive no arrest fee or compensation for the arrest. Sounds like you're confusing what you're companies didn't want you to do with what you are legally allowed to do. Believe me, I'm sure I'd have heard about not being able to detain anyone by force after some of the incidents I've been involved in.

-10. Probably would have been better if I didn't hang out with drunken armed prostitutes all the time...

What's your basis of info for that? Unarmed guards are licensed by the state too. Private guards/officers are hired by private healthcare companies, which is my case. They have the same latitude and training as an armed guard minus the firearms portion. Some, again in my case, FAR exceed the minimum training requirements set forth by the state. I've been accused of being "an 8 dollar an hour security guard" on here before and I'll tell you that is far from the case. I'm unarmed and non-commissioned, but that's where the difference ends. I frequently make arrests (detain whatever you want to call it) and intervene in physical situations. Granted, I'd love to be armed, but it doesn't mean we don't do anything and wait for the police to show up. In about 2 1/2 years of work I've made quite a few good arrests, some felony fugitives, gotten into more than my fair share of scraps, found drugs, guns, etc. I'm not bragging or trying to come across as a tough ass. My workload is FAR LESS than MPD or Shelby County, but we get the same crime and the same criminals and we do what we can to make sure our staff stays safe and that means going well beyond observing and reporting.

What is your objective in a self-defense shooting?

Holy ****! I am astounded by the bad information in this thread. About half the people who posted need to go back to HCP class and sit down with a lawyer. I know it will fall on deaf ears, but you CAN BE SUED. The law was written as a deterrent to basically state if you were not found criminally liable you CANNOT be held liable in a civil suit, but you CAN still be sued and have to appear in court. -
I didn't figure you were. I probably came off harsh because I was just coming off telling someone to go pound sand at work lol Most of the time, not all mind you, but mostly we understand HCP holders are NOT our problem at work. Just about everyone in my department carries when not working and we've practically begged to be armed, but it just isn't happening anytime soon. So we are generally extremely polite unless you have it tucked into your jeans and are acting like an ass...
-
Technically, unless you were in the performance of your duties for your guard job, he could have told you to pound sand.

All 3 hospital companies have policies against it, but like I said earlier, unless it's posted you're OK until someone sees it. Then you have to either lock it up or leave property. Make no mistake, there are no delsuions about our limitations. We've been working to get my hospital armed for years, they just won't do it. So we do the best we can with what we have. It's not the security personnel that don't get it, it's the hospital board and administrators.

Sounds like alot of BS to me.

Punisher84 replied to daddyo's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
There's a whole big bag of dumb sitting in this thread. YOU DO NOT SHOOT TO KILL. YOU DO NOT SHOOT TO WOUND. YOU SHOOT TO STOP THE THREAT. You guys that are sitting here saying your intent is "to kill" may find yourself in a very unsatisfactory light to a jury using that terminology. -
I ended up talking to a friend of a friend last night who lives over there and she said the same so that makes me feel a little better. I've lived here all my life and I've NEVER seen crap like this.
-
See CA answered that, but yea I listen to it at work sometimes to see what we might have coming to us. Rennslaer by Bartlett Elementary. In that subdivision. It's County though.
-
For those of you that have Iphones you can download the 5-0 radio app. Memphis made CNN it's pretty bad around. Kinda curious if my house I'm about to buy in North Bartlett has flooding or not lol they said I DIDN'T need flood insurance for it so... and here go the damn sirens again...
-
Anyone else having any trouble this morning? This is what I was greeted with in the Raleigh/Bartlett area coming home from work.
-
It's not illegal per state law, but most have policies against it even if they don't have the circle slash. So that being said, it would pay to conceal

There shouldn't be an expiration date on it. There is nothing that says you have to renew it from the state. If they are having you go through training again to renew it they are screwing you out of money. I have a TN state issued card for spray and impact weapon for work there is NO expiration date on it. So one would wonder if the state of TN does not require you to do recurrent training, why would you need to as an average joe?
-
Late to the party as usual. The Impact Weapon certification does NOT expire. I worked at a training school for 3 years and I never once saw anything about renewal of the chemical weapon/impact weapon/ or electronic stun device certs. Guard licenses have to be renewed, but that's it. My state cards have no renewal date on them either.

Well thank you Mike!
-
You swore you would never tell! How you guys doing? Miss ya'll. Need to grab a beer sometime if you have some downtime!
-
Hey buddy! Really glad to see you. Holler at me sometime.
-
Well, holler at me when there's a test case for it.
-
You said the weight of the cert and permit were equal. The AG disagrees. That was my point. The baton certification is not to allow you to carry it. Impact weapon and Chemical Weapon certifications are for liability reasons. Security personnel get the cert so they can show they've been properly trained to use it. It doesn't allow you to carry it wherever you please. The Handgun Carry Permit is a training class specifically designed for you to carry a firearm and the state issues you a license for this purpose. Guard licenses, impact weapon, electronic stun device, and chemical weapon certifications are issued by the TN state private protective services bureau. I know there are people here that train average joes to use the impact weapon, but it is going to be up to the individual officer/attorney/judge/jury to determine if you were in the right by carrying it or using it.
-
I know it's been debated here before, but Fallguy even posted something before from the AG and his opinion was that an HCP and a baton certification were not the same thing.
