Agreed. I was actually happy last night because there was a little hope in the passage where I left off and stopped reading there. It's funny how it has gotten to me though. It's not gotten to me in a way that has overtaken me or anything, but it has made me think. I always thought "Well I can hunt and fish and grow vegetables, we'll just go to the country and live like the western days or something." This book is like no hope for a big change, just surviving. How much the man loves his son though is beautiful, but heartbreaking. Because of what he ultimately knows.

Aww you're just grumpy from your nap! LOL

I'd say better Backstreet than N'Sync, but Justin Timberlake now makes enough money to pay off the deficit so I'm gonna leave them out of it.

*writing notes* poo...smell will...linger. BRILLIANT!

It's strange because it's not just an age thing either. There was a 40 somthing in the class that just stared at her desk the whole time.

I was half tempted to tell them about all the violent psychs we've had lately. We've been averaging an all out brawl at least a couple times a week. Busy for a hospital anyway. That's allright they'll have something happen one day and they'll need to call us and they won't be able to remember what to do lol

Ok so here is my rant. I had to deliver a 15 minute presentation about campus security at our monthly new hire orientation at the hospital today. I go in give them our crime stats (down 14% from 08), tell them all the new things we are working on like more intelligent camera systems, new training, hiring more officers, etc. I'm joking around trying to get them to do anything other than what they were doing. During my 15 minutes one girl applied lip gloss, one did her nails, one lady stared off into space, and everything in between. So I attempt to add a little shock value and tell them what we deal with, what we do, what can happen if you're not aware, etc. Nothing. Now, before the jokes start let me say this, I have delivered speeches and presentations to ALOT more than just 12 people before. I may not be the most exciting individual to ever live, but I'm not Ben Stein either. I just found it rude and irritating and they did it to the person who spoke before me as well. If you don't care about what my team can do for you while you are being strangled by an angry psychiatric patient fine, but at least have the common courtesy to look towards the front of the room for 15 minutes. Damn. Ok rant over lol

I'm gonna have to have a friendly agree to disagree there. I'm not gonna knock Tom and say he doesn't know what he is talking about, but I think you can get more out of the Range USA advanced classes. I've taken several of the classes there and it's tailored to be beginner friendly, but keep an edge for the more seasoned type of shooter as well. I will also say that I have NOT taken a class at RangeMaster, but alot of my close friends have. So I am letting their opinion kinda influence me. I did not take a class with them because they lost my business after one of the dinks at the counter literally tossed ammo at my wife when she asked to buy more. I think RangeMaster could be alot better if they would drop their old man chauvinist attitude and try to be a bit more like Range USA, Top Brass, Classic Arms, etc. RangeMaster and Guns and Ammo always come up as the people NOT to deal with 9 times out of 10.

So you can know what I did when I saw this pic I'm going to put it in internet speak below... ROFLMAO!!!!!!

The movie actually isn't horrible in a Matrix kinda entertainment value way, but you have to completely shut your brain off to even fathom watching it.

Heard about this the other day. I didn't expect anything less. Sad stuff.

I do plan on seeing the movie. I wondered about the gun thing with so little ammo and it only being a revolver, but I think what he was striving for is the direst of circumstances. In the book you are looking at a decade of living that lifestyle. What isn't decimated has already been scavenged or destroyed. I think he was looking at showing only the minimal amount of survival. I actually almost cried when he describes seeing the flames shooting across the sky, then he goes to the bathtub and starts the faucets. His wife asks him why he's taking a bath and he says "I'm not." I just got this image in my head of standing at the window and knowing the end of civilization is coming and having the cold calculating thought to prepare for a long journey towards death by filling up the tub with life's essence. Water.

That was my biggest thing. I read alot, but his writing style is very different.

Yea if anything it's been amped up. I think every adult is required to do some sort of military service there for at least 2 years? There regular security forces over there look like our SWAT teams.

That sucks. At least it wasn't his current home.

Went back and was reading over this, thought this quote was worth resurrecting. If you look at a social and economic collapse, obviously there are going to be people that will be of more value than others, but as Patrick himself pointed out and Creeky hinted at, there are people who will adapt and some who will just fall apart. Look at New Orleans for example, ALOT of the cops just took off. Self survival and all I guess. One of the main characters in Dawn of the Dead remake was probably smarter than Ving Rhames (the cop), but he "sold televisions at a Best Buy". While some professions will be in greater demand and those skill sets will ultimately needed more, it really depends on the people. When we were doing mass-casualty events at the hospital for the longest time our administrators worked like everyone survived, no one left, and that, aside from planned problems, everybody held it together fine. That changed when several of them went to a Homeland Security training seminar where they turned all that crap upside down. People like to think their job title, money, and social status make them important with little thought to how they will be useful in a world where there is no social system. Truth is people will react at their basic nature when confronted with problems, it's what makes cops run towards gunfire, firefighters run into a burning building, and military personnel run back into heavy fire to drag their buddy out.

Was raised by my Mom. Parents got divorced when I was 6, so there were alot of boyfriends and Valentine's Days growing up. Mom was a country chick, Mom knew how to shoot, Mom wanted diamonds, she got Russell Stover's. You have any idea how hard it is to lug a grown man to the "bad gift hole" at 10 years old?!!

Ah. Might wanna do some searching before you start making alot of new threads on bills. I'm not saying that to come of as a jerk or anything, it's just something that has been covered ALOT lately so there have been multiple threads with the same bill information in it. There was one on this about a day ago.

LOL Tell Dad real men don't run sound and that since he is to much of a Nancy you'll take care of his daughter for him and make sure she's safe. Then if you're just in a mood give him this face when she turns away...

It won't show anything without being registered.

Honestly, the state of the world is the number one reason my wife and I are never going to have kids. If there are future generations to enjoy this world, I doubt life will be much like it is now. I think the days of some space age utopia type thinking are long gone. I'm not trying to be silly, but honestly Mad Max is more what comes to mind. We'll kill ourselves out and destroy the world with greed.

Kinda why I brought it up. Even though there are multiple scenarios where you could see a total collapse, but still find plenty of things to live on and survive a full life with, The Road seems to offer the bleakest of scenarios. It's not just civilization that ceases to exist, but pretty much everything. You can't grow food, you can't hunt, you can barely survive. What I do love about the book is the intimate detail he uses to describe everything and the resourcefulness the main character shows.

I would too, believe me. Both you and jackdog make a great point. I think when you look at it you have those of us that believe strongly in a cause now and you have those that will ultimately be rallied to a common cause. Most people can only be pushed so far. When you start threatening people's way of life that they are accustomed to, they get angry. When you start denying them the essentials to live, they fight back.

Yea, but divide that 3% a few times and you've got probably 1% or less that would stand against or for anything.
