We're really gonna need specifics on the problem before making any real recommendations. "Won't run" covers a lot of ground. But knowing the quality of the Remington pistols, I'm currently leaning toward magazine, lube issues or operator error.

Need more info on the specifics of the malfunction. Feeding, firing, extraction issues? If its been put away for a long time it may just need a good lube. Especially since its never been fired before. Might just be new gun stiffness. Any number of possibilities. I have a Remington 1911R1 that I bought new when they first came out in 2010. Its always run perfectly.
  3. I'd just look at what you already have. Basically, you want a gun that is easy to carry, won't get in the way of doing chores and is adequate to deal with any perceived situation. I feel that just about any medium frame pistol/revolver in a reasonable self defense caliber carried in a proper holster would be just about right. My personal favorite camping/hiking/woods gun is this 3" S&W Model 60-4 Chief's Special Target. Just a little 5 shot J-frame .38 Special. But can be carried completely un-noticed unless needed. I think people tend to worry a lot more about snakes than they need to. A snake is very rarely a threat to a human. Most are extremely beneficial to have around. I prefer to simply leave them alone.
  4. I'm not a fan of the .40 S&W or Glock. Don't have and won't have either. However, in today's market, if it gets someone a decent gun and ammo at a reasonable price, go for it.
  5. Right now there is no "best place". Prices and availability change on a daily basis. Sometimes hourly. It depends on who gets what, when and how long it lasts. When good deals do pop up, they're usually sold out before you can get to them. Right now, ammo shopping is by the Bible method. Seek and (hopefully) ye shall find.
  6. I have a touch of arthritis in my hands. The middle finger on my right hand won't close all the way because of it. Therefore I can no longer shoot Colt/Ruger style single action revolvers. The back of the trigger guard pounds that middle knuckle to the point that I'll be bleeding in just one cylinder full.
  7. Well y'all know that I'm a 1911 guy. I've come to like the Rock Island guns. Ain't nothing fancy, but they do work. I have three of 'em now. All were bought used. The first was a .38 Super I stumbled across at a gun show back in 2015. Bought it just because I like the caliber and it was cheap. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a jam-o-matic. But I found the problem, it was minor, fixed it myself and now it runs like a top. The second I bought last year. Its my one and only 9mm 1911. Honestly, I've only had it to the range once. But it was flawless and accurate. Can't ask for more than that. Not long ago I ran into a good deal on a LNIB G.I. 45acp. Honestly, I had absolutely no need for it, just bought it on a whim because the price was good. I haven't even shot it yet. But it seems to be very well made. Still trying to decide if I'm gonna keep it or flip it. As far as up-grades go, decide what you want it to be before buying. In most cases you can buy a slightly better model of the same brand with better sights, trigger, grips, etc for less cost than buying the plain G.I. model and later modifying it. There's no point in wasting money. Also, don't fall into the up-grade trap. Do only those up-grades that make the gun better for you. Not everybody needs extended this or custom that. Most of these things are more about looks than actual improvements. In my personal 1911s I like a long trigger, decent sights and an arched mainspring housing. I need absolutely nothing else.
  8. I'm still looking for one too.
  9. The .50 G.I. has been around since 2006. It and the guns for it are made by Guncrafter Industries. It seems it never caught on. The pistols Guncrafter make are custom guns. Reported to be extremely well made and accurate. However, the ammo is also custom and I know of no commercial source other than Guncrafter. At roughly $50 for a box of 20 rounds. I think I'll pass. https://www.guncrafterindustries.com/
  10. Mossberg makes and excellent set of adjustable sights to fit their 500 models. The receiver is already drilled and tapped for the rear sight. However the front sight must be soldered on. I added set to my 590 some years ago and have been very happy with them. https://www.mossberg.com/store/ghost-ring-sight-kit-500-590-95300.html
  11. Understand that I'm not siding with ATF. I rarely do. But I can see their point. While the trigger does indeed mechanically reset after every shot, the rifle will continue to fire as long as pressure is held against the trigger. Thus multiple shots with one pull of the trigger. I think they have a valid case. I think this is just fair warning before they swoop in for the kill. This way Rarebreed has a chance to shut themselves down before ATF interevens. ATF gets enough flack for their surprises as it is. Its a PR move. Frankly, I think the whole NFA is anti-constitutional. It was designed as a tax. Not a restriction.
  12. Well, we all knew it was coming. The product was intentionally designed to skirt the current laws. Sooner or later the law will catch up.
  13. The failure of the .38 Colt against the Moro tribesmen prompted the Army to reassess their current sidearms and look for something better. The 1911 was developed as a Cavalry sidearm. The idea was to duplicate the .45 Colt revolver cartridge in a semi-auto pistol. The criteria was it should be able to kill a horse at 100 yards.
  14. Talked to my oldest son yesterday. He was in a wreck last year and had to buy a new truck. Of course the only thing he could find had a big V8 in it. Just took a new job that's 20 miles each way. He's averaging about $78 a week for gas.
  15. On most lever guns its a fairly simple DIY job. There are replacement sights as well as easy to install rails readily available on the internet.
  16. I went thru the motorcycle phase years ago. I've owned three of 'em. Never wrecked one, but boy have I had some serious close calls. I'm talking butt cheeks with a death grip on the seat! But then driving in Memphis is dangerous enough with 4 wheels. On two wheels its life or death every day. Got tired of playing that game. Took every bit of the enjoyment out of it. Sold my last one about 30 years ago and have never had the desire to buy another.
  17. Yep, we all goof from time to time. It just makes us human. After a lifetime of turning wrenches for a living, on both arms, everything from the elbows down is just a mottled patchwork of scar tissue.
  18. There ya have it. Seems like every new gun owner goes out and buys a 9mm. There have been a lot of new gun owners in the last couple of years. So they're making ammo for the general public. Whereas .45acp shooters, especially 1911 shooters, tend to be more serious about their guns and most reload. I have a bunch of .45acp pistols. I haven't bought any factory ammo in years.
  19. I know the Security Sixs are getting harder to find, but really? That's just nuts! I have one just like it that I bought two years ago. Granted, mine is used and no box. But I'm still astonished. Some people just got more money than sense.
