I only have 5.56 chambered ARs, and couldn't see a use for a .223 one with the limitations in ammo selection. I used to shoot 62gr 5.56, but I've switched to 55gr .223 for reasons of economy. I can get more ammo for practice/training, and I have 55gr .233 Speer Gold Dot for my HD ammo. The biggest reason for keeping my HD and range ammo the same grain load is that I have an adjustable gas block for my HD SBR, but the 55gr shoots well from my 16" AR as well. I've found it to be the best all purpose round for my needs, and would recommend people try it, but wouldn't sell it as the end all solution.

Twitter suspending accounts for violent extremism
btq96r replied to NextExit's topic in General Chat
Twitter has user agreements and terms of service. It's up to them who they ban, private service and all. If you don't like Twitter, it's probably because you've never tried to tailor it for your own purposes. I have a follow list that keeps me up to date on news (standard, left, and right leaning), interest items, sports, naked women, and safety warnings. It makes for an easy way to get information in a condensed format, allowing me to pick what I want to dive into. -
I didn't dance after, but I've had the pleasure of trying to find a detent pin that went airborne.

As mentioned earlier, you aren't really "upgrading" your shotgun, you're just getting a different weapon. I'll be the wet blanket that says building an AR before you've had your hands on one for a bit isn't anything I'd recommend. To me, that's like learning how to repair a car before you learn how to drive. First, try to shoot one if you haven't already. I'm sure you can find a rental, or a TGO member in your area that will let you get some time behind one. You might find that you don't like it, and an AK is more to your style. If you're still wanting to go with an AR after that, first stop would be to find a good used one if I was buying now with your budget. If you want new out of the box, I'd buy an Anderson or PSA over the Ruger or S&W models mentioned, but that's a personal taste. You can even post a want to buy ad in the trading post if you don't see one you like. This is where you'll want to ask a lot of questions and do some research on your own. Just because someone is selling a gun here isn't a guarantee of quality, just a less likely chance of getting screwed. Once you know you like ARs, have one in hand, get to Carnegie hall. That means practice, practice, practice. Use the cleaning time after your practice to learn the innards of the gun, watch as many videos on it as you like. The AR is simple enough to start with, but getting to a higher level takes time.

And they still haven't gotten rid of their godawful slide lock. I'm starting to think they get a cut from aftermarket parts sales.

DoD opening online PX purchases for anyone honorably discharged
btq96r replied to Sam1's topic in General Chat
Yup. I remember when the PX at Fort Campbell got a major upgrade. I was thinking what a waste it was for Campbell, when they could have done that for a base like Fort Polk, Fort Irwin, Fort Huachuca, or Fort Bliss where it would have made a much bigger difference. Aside from the convenience of taking kids to the food court, there isn't anything in the PX that can't be had at one of the four Walmart's in the Fort Campbell area. -
While I think that type of hunting is vacuous, I certainly don't agree with the threats, or anything of the sort. It's a lesson that not everyone is going to give you kuddos for what you post on social media, so think about what happens if it gets shared, forwarded, ect. past your list of friends.

Is the shield a good fit for your hand? That could factor into things if your hands are too big for it. I've felt the snappiness of the .40 as my P99 has some, but a workable amount. I agree that the weapon factors into things a good deal. That said, shooting my 9mm VP9 and my .40S&W P99 in the same range session puts the difference in perspective.

Phokus Research Group- Sons Trauma Kits
btq96r replied to btq96r's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Id like to think that if the armor is worth the price, it will be okay. Anywhere you put your first aid, it's got a chance of taking damage, it is what it is. For our needs here in the US, I'd say that the chances are vastly diminished in analysis of the threats. Having felt the annoyance of being a big guy with a plethora of gear- especially in vehicles- anything that streamlines how it's worn has my attention. Also worth mentioning, is the difference between self and buddy applied first aid. This looks like a product with the later in mind. -
REALLY!?!?!? Police shoot civilian training academy student
btq96r replied to chances R's topic in Training Discussions
Before you can even get to that, I don't see a need for blank fire, or even an unloaded gun in a training situation like that. A rubber gun with a loud shout of "bang" would suffice. -
A new piece of kit for your consideration, it's a trauma kit sized to fit behind body armor. I haven't seen one in person, but the premise looks sound. I can especially see it as a great product for those wearing low-vis setups, or other armor that isn't meant to draw too much attention (LEO's). As long as the arnor keeps the pouch from being damaged, I think it would work. There are different sizes and setups, which also seem to be a natural fit for the laptop or hydration pouch of a standard size bag, and the area where you can store things in the door of a vehicle. In all, I like the concept for it's different train of thought. http://phokusresearch.com/phokus-products/sons-trauma-kit/

Who EDC a Spare Pistol Mag IWB?
btq96r replied to MuscleHead's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Then what I have isn't the holster for you. It could fit a mag for a 19, but I doubt a 17 will let you close the flap. -

btq96r replied to MuscleHead's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Depends on the mag, but should be more than enough to get a grip and draw easy. There is only 3.25" before the mag sticks out. My 12rd .40 S&W Walther P99 mags fit like a glove, whereas my 15rd H&K VP9 mags are almost too long for it. What make/model/caliber mags are you looking to carry? -

I have this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0048KJB8U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Even OWB, it stays covered well enough since I don't tuck in my shirts. -

Exactly. Every exercise should have someone in charge of safety to check the ammo. What happened was a complete human failure on many levels where it shouldn't have been. Tragedy doesn't do this event justice. -
I have a Nexus 5, but this doesn't appeal to me. Not enough to drop my nice, no contract, post-paid deal with AT&T, and have to go back to a stock OS (I have CyanogenMod installed). It'll be interesting to see if they can make it work, though. Would be a way to help keep Verizon and AT&T from getting out of control.

$35 for a Colt 1911....I need to build a time machine. Handloading was apparently a big thing back in the day as well. Thanks for posting that. Very cool look into the gun culture of yesteryear.

My condolences for you and your family, n0rlf. You may not be ready for the hurt of today, but because of your father, it seems you're ready for what may come tomorrow.

I remember when it was announced Rio would host the Olympics. In a nod to irony, two weeks later a police helicopter was shot down. Between the police vs. gang fighting, the gang vs. gang fighting, and the everyday street crime it all exacerbates, I don't know how anyone in their right mind thought that city was ready for the Olympics.

I do what I can. No Facebook use, browser clears cookies every time it closes, never logged in for a Google search, use a VPN for untoward stuff...but there is no way to stay away completely if you use the internet.

Houston Store Robbery: Suprise, Speed, Violence of Action
btq96r replied to btq96r's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Looking at the tactics, nothing was typical. What would explain the "why" is the store has a Western Union (presumably holding a good bit of cash) co-located inside. -
Saw this video on another site: https://www.yahoo.com/news/terrifying-video-shows-bullets-flying-134007168.html Just, wow. That's obviously the higher end of the threat spectrum you might find yourself under. Looking at the tape, it seems these guys have a mix of some kind of long gun, and a shotgun. More importantly, they moved in fast, and while they were a bit loose in how they positioned themselves, had control over the store well enough. Thoughts?

Get a professional. Dealing directly with the IRS is no task for the average citizen. When I was audited by the IRS, my CPA took care of it, the key part being he was the one in direct communication with the IRS examiner the whole time. I would have never wanted to deal with that end of it.
