  1. It's illegal to carry at the public colleges unless you are a full time employee carrying at the school you are working for. It might or might not be legal to carry at a private college, depending on policy of the college, but i'd be willing to bet that no private college in this state has a policy allowing carry, so consider that illegal too for practical purposes. If you have a handgun carry permit, you can have a loaded firearm in your vehicle at any school or college in the state. Every state around Tennessee, except North Carolina, has legalized college carry. You should thank your NRA A rated pro gun Republican legislature and Republican governor for obviously working hard on something that is legal in most of the country but can't seem to happen here, even after the NRA spent tons of money in Nashville a couple of years ago.
  2. Yeah they need to get a license (non resident VA licenses are available) just like anyone else and carry concealed in Virginia very easy where this incident happened. If they want to carry in Maryland and DC, licenses are available to non residents and I'm sure federal politicians can make phone calls and get one easier than a lot of people. The higher up Congress folks like majority and minority leaders are protected 24/7 by Capitol police everywhere they go. Capitol police are also at the Congressional office buildings right by the Capitol. I highly doubt any Capitol police would keep a congressman or senator from carrying in his own DC office building or even in public in DC whether or not he has any sort of license. Have you ever heard of one getting arrested for it? Probably not a problem for them that want to carry compared to normal people.
  3. Some lawmakers already have been made special deputy US marshals in order to carry a gun anywhere in the country, including Senator Dianne Fienstein. Those silly politicians don't need any more laws to help them carry guns because if they want to carry bad enough they are either wealthy enough to hire private security or off duty police or they can pull strings and at the very least have themselves and their staff made reserve local police. They can get non resident DC, VA, and Maryland licenses to cover the DC metro area. I cannot believe a federal level politician could not have the influence to get a may issue license in DC or Maryland. What would make legal carry for a non federal LEO in the Capitol mall area (tourist area) of DC difficult is that most of the buildings you go to, including the offices where the Congress people are, have metal detectors. I've heard that some of those buildings will allow out of state LEO's to carry, some will check guns, and some will not check guns. Of course I would be very surprised if the Congress critters themselves had to go through those metal detectors to their own office buildings. I mean what Capitol policeman (that is who protects Congress) is going to tell basically his boss that he can't carry? My guess is if those politicians want to carry, they can carry and get by with it whether legal or not.
  4. This happened in Alexandria Va which is right across the river from DC. Alexandria is a very expensive and nice city where I doubt they have much violent crime compared to DC city limits. There is nothing to keep law abiding person from either open carrying without a license in Alexandria or carrying a handgun concealed with a license. Licenses are easy to get there and Virginia honors a lot of out of state licenses including our TN license. Carry laws are probably better than ours in TN. No looking for stupid signs and you can carry at colleges without being a criminal. I doubt anyone expected to be attacked at this baseball game in Alexandria because there is not much crime there. Of course it would be difficult to carry if you are playing baseball. Sad situation for people just trying to relax and have fun outside.
  5. People with permits shouldn't have to worry about looking for signs or any other weapons charges. That is the whole point of buying the stupid permit in the first place isn't it or so I thought? It is kind of dumb when you pay 75 bucks for a class, a little over 100 for a permit, take the time for a class, and then turn around and you are legal at Kroger but illegal here or you have to look for a sign here. Many other states have it a lot cheaper with less restrictions than what we have here.
  6. From what I understand Beale Street property association has some arrangement with the city of Memphis but I still can't see how metal detectors are put up on a public street frisking everyone and that is legal. You can avoid the whole frisking by going down there before night time but still it is very odd that is done on a public street. Now that our bright lightbulb politicians and the NRA lobbyist 'reformed' our gun laws in such a 'great' way this year, in theory, metal detectors can be set up at any public property and you can be disarmed. So i'm sure this new law will do nothing but encourage metal detectors everywhere like TSA at the airports. I guess it makes people feel safe and does nothing to make people safer. Funny how these government clowns never thought of the need to run everyone through metal detectors when it was 'illegal' for us to carry in a bunch of locations in Tennessee. It proves all along they worry more about good folks carrying than the common street criminals.
  7. Yeah the bright lobbyist that wrote the bill that will become law July 1 made it more complicated than necessary and added more grayness to the gray weapons laws in this state. The lobbyist behind the bill could not simply remove the criminal penalty behind the no gun signs because that would be too difficult. It is kind of like someone wanting to drive from Nashville to Knoxville by going down through Chattanooga. Best practical guess would be if you see metal detectors actually being used would be to just go back to your car to store your gun or sell your tickets and go somewhere else instead of that venue.
  8. Tennessee is strange for actually having a weapons crime for licensees who violate 'no guns' signs but then again I thought Tennessee was odd until recently for not even letting people have loaded guns in their cars or still having to buy a permit to open carry. I laugh when I hear that Tennessee is pro gun. Yeah I guess it is not New Jersey where you have a slim chance of getting a carry license but there are quite a few states that carry wise have it better than Tennessee.
  9. If you conceal and there are no metal detectors, no one will know and there won't be any problem. You aren't breaking the law so why worry. I would not let event rules keep me from protecting myself when you are following state law. You do realize if this becomes more of an issue that event organizers can have metal detectors under this new public property firearm law? So I wouldn't make too big of a deal out of it and just conceal or you are going to see metal detectors everywhere you go.
  10. You're not breaking the law if you have a handgun carry permit and you walk past a 'no gun' sign at a park. The signs only apply to people who do not have permits. So yes that is why I said I would just conceal at one of those events and quietly carry as long as you're not having to walk through a metal detector.
  11. Most of those type of events glance in women's purses. If there are not metal detectors, just conceal and don't worry about it. You have a permit and you are at a park so you should be legal carrying.
  12. I know if you go to Puerto Rico to shoot in a match you have to get some sort of license from the Puerto Rico police just to legally bring a handgun. I believe the gun clubs down there have to arrange for you to get the licenses ahead of time. I am under the impression that they have some sort of process that involves a license just to own a gun and of course carry it. You may need the help of a local to help you with that process. You don't go through Customs going into Puerto Rico if you are coming from the US since it is a US territory. Where in Puerto Rico are you wanting to go? There are some neat things to see in San Juan but to be honest the violent crime down there is probably worse than anywhere in the mainland US. There are parts of San Juan that truly are like something in a 3rd world country and it is sad.
  13. 18 is the age to possess a handgun or buy one from an individual in TN. You have to be 21 to buy a handgun or handgun ammo from an FFL Some states do let 18 year olds carry handguns. I personally do not think it is a big deal for an 18 year old to have a handgun. I legally had a handgun at that age and did carry it legally on me and in my vehicle at times. I think it is a good idea for a young lady traveling alone and of course living in an apartment. I'd just look at one of those electric pistol safes if there is a roommate to keep the roommate or other unauthorized people from handling the gun when not at apartment.
  14. I'd probably just give her a handgun to use because then she can take it in the car in the console/glove box when traveling from where you all live to where she goes to school or any other road trips. I know she could have the shotgun loaded behind the seat of the car but that is a hassle when compared to a handgun in a console. Buy one of those electronic handgun safes for the apartment when she is not at her apartment and she would be all set.
  15. If you buy a gun from an FFL in Mississippi and you do not have a MS firearms license, your information is called into the FBI NICS system. You DO NOT pay a fee to the FBI for your background check. If you do have a MS firearms license, that acts as a background check substitute and your information is not called in. You just fill out the FFL 4473 and the dealer writes down your firearms license information in an area on the 4473. Mississippi does not have its own gun background check system like TN.
  16. I guess the real question is what keeps the Tennessee permit from qualifying with the ATF as a background check substitute whether or not we have TICS at the state level?
  17. I do not think people had to go through metal detectors to go to the BBQ competition. It is in a park so you should be legal to carry. If you go to Beale Street in the daytime, you don't have to go through metal detectors. The Gibson guitar museum is there. Go check out the lobby of the Peabody Hotel and have a snack. The zoo would be good to go to. You can also drop in the Brooks Museum by the zoo. The Pink Palace is also good to see. Bass Pro in the Pyramid has a nice observation deck that you can see all around the river area. Overton Square has some good restaurants. There are a couple good breweries in Memphis that offer tours.
  18. How is the TN handgun carry permit not in compliance with the ATF to be a background check substitute? I thought the problem was with the state of TN not wanting to give up TICS money from the FFL's, not that our permit is not in compliance with ATF. It is my understanding that a state must do background checks every five years on pistol licenses, then they can be a substitute.
  19. This was one of the few decent and clean pro gun bills that went through the legislature this year. Nice for people who have suppressors to have one less stupid law to have to worry about. Whoever lobbied the legislature on this did a great job. We need them to lobby the legislature on the carry restriction side.
  20. This bill was passed through both the state house and state senate and will go to the governor's office. If everyone with a permit could get unrestricted carry, I wouldn't have the problem that I do with this bill. I also was under the impression that the DA's could go to the sheriff's departments and get special police commissions to carry when working. This is nothing but politicians helping politicians get carry rights that most people with permits cannot get.
  21. It looks like this bill passed the Senate last night and is headed to the governor for his signature.
  22. You guys are making a lot better headway in Georgia than what we are making in Tennessee for whatever reason. That is good to see. Where is it illegal to carry there now that college carry will be legal? Will K-12 schools be about the only illegal location? I know you don't have to worry about the silly no gun signs like we do here.
  23. Yes from what I read the college sporting events were excluded from the college carry bill. Of course being able to carry on campus 95% of the time is better than the 0% that most people in Tennessee have.
  24. That is good to see for Georgia. Tennessee politicians aren't sure if we can be trusted to carry at the local library or hospital from reading NRA sponsored legislation this year. North Carolina is now the last state that borders Tennessee where carrying on a college campus is illegal.
  25. I think the NRA had a part with this bill because it involves lawsuit money being awarded basically to the NRA if a city or county violates the pre emption statute. A simple bill that just changes the 'no gun' sign criminal offense to a deny of entry/remove from property would not have been written by the NRA because what would they benefit from that kind of change? If the NRA was effective in this state they would have gotten these goofy restrictions off the books when they had the convention in Nashville.
