And now Panera joins the ranks of the noncommital statement
300winmag replied to JAB's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
If your handgun is concealed, you have nothing to worry about. Most every large corporation has some sort of no guns policy. That is just how they operate. Get a good holster, cover your handgun, and you will be fine. Those businesses should never know that you are carrying. -
Most states do not have any sort of criminal penalty for people with licenses carrying past a 'no guns' sign. It was probably completely legal for that individual to carry in the hospital.
-
Yes, that 1302 refers to machine guns, silencers, etc that you are not going to be carrying on a handgun carry permit. It also just used to refer to switchblade knives, but does not anymore. The way I read the park statute, a person cannot carry a machine gun or silencer with intent to go armed in a park. People can claim legislative intent all they want, but the park law does not refer to normal firearms or knives.

From my understanding, the teachers or anyone else can legally carry in the schools in Missouri as long as they have a license. That of course does not keep the teachers from being fired or others from asked to leave. That is much better than Tennessee's set up.

I don't think the Founders envisioned a system where the interstate commerce clause would be used to regulate everything to death.

It seems to be legal to carry handguns at K-12 schools in the following states that surround TN IF you have a license: Missouri Mississippi Alabama It seems to be legal to carry handguns at colleges in the following states that surround TN IF you have a license: Missouri Kentucky Virginia Mississippi Alabama Note that you can still be asked to leave a school or college in those states if you happen to be found with a handgun, but you do not face criminal weapons charges. Students and faculty members can still be fired too in those surrounding states. I think if you just remove the criminal penalties in Tennessee for those with handgun carry permits, you would get a lot less resistance to that sort of change VS forcing schools to allow guns on the properties. I also think that such a bill would be much easier to pass. What are your thoughts?

Is this legal in all states with the barrel 14 inches or just federally legal? I would be concerned that some state would have a stricter definition of this than the feds.

If you are thinking about a used 308 bolt action rifle, take a look for a savage or an older remington. You can pick up a nice clean savage with the accutrigger used in that range. Sometimes you can pick up a used remington 700. If I was looking at new, I'd consider that Ruger American 308, Marlin XS7 308. Those are both solid feeling rifles and have good triggers on them. You can also pick up a new Remington 700 ADL at Bass Pro, Wal Mart, Dick's, under 400. I think I'd go with a Savage for 400 because you can tell the fit and finish is better on the Savage 110 blued, accutrigger, and synthetic stock than the Remington 700 ADL. Of course all these are without the scope. I saw you got a Marlin 336. That is all the gun you'll need in this part of the country. Those are nice, short, and light weight. A little low powered shotgun scope or peep sights and you are set.

TN Bill 1774 -- Lawful carry in vehicle without permit
300winmag replied to RoDan's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
The open carry bill never fixed the school, park, or sign posting problems either. We probably lost the park carry bill this year because of all the time spent on the open carry bill. If I have my pick between a bill that will let me legally open carry at Wal Mart WITHOUT a permit and a bill that would decriminalize me carrying WITH a permit anywhere in the state, I think I'd pick the handgun carry permit improvements. You will probably never get a bill passed that has open carry without a permit anywhere including in schools, parks, and places of employment with no gun policies. That is the political reality of the situation. You may be able to get a bill passed that decriminalizes carry in parks and schools with the permit. You also will probably not get a bill passed that forces schools to allow guns by policy and lose their ability to ask people to leave. -
TN Bill 1774 -- Lawful carry in vehicle without permit

JAB- I completely agree with you. You only have so much political capital in a year and I think that political capital should have been used on the stupid no guns signs, parks, and possibly schools this year instead of the open carry without a permit. In principal, I agree with open carry without a permit or any carry without a permit, but I think the efforts should have been mainly spent on helping the people that are presently paying money for handgun carry permits. Fix the stupid off limits places for the permits THEN fix the open carry/constitutional carry issues. I think the handgun carry permit off limits fixes are easier to accomplish politically than the open/constutitional carry. The folks that have been carrying rifles in Target and Starbucks have given a lot of bad publicity to the open carry movement. I do think the car carry deal was easy to pass because it was flying under the radar. It will benefit a lot of people, in my opinion. At least now I can't be charged with a crime for having a shell in my shotgun chamber when transporting it in my vehicle. People who are traveling and may not have a handgun carry permit for whatever reason benefit a lot from this. -
‘Open Carry’ Gun Fight Moves to Target Stores
300winmag replied to JohnC's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Just conceal your gun and go about your business. Most of the larger stores and businesses that you frequent probably have a no guns policy. If you have a permit and are concealing, you have nothing to worry about. If TN can get rid of the fine part of the stupid sign law, then you would never have anything to worry about as far as being legal. Signs only carry legal weight in Mississippi for folks that do not have enhanced permits. None of the other states surrounding TN place any sort of legal weight on signs to the extent that TN does. -
Most big corporations are going to have no gun policies. Just conceal your handgun and go about your business. Don't call and ask companies if you can bring your handgun.

The crossbow to me takes care of a lot of the form issues that you would have with a compound or recurve. As long as you know your range and can work with the wind, the crossbow is easier to use in hunting. Crossbows are heavier than compound bows and to me are not as fun to shoot. But if you have say limited time to practice or have difficulty using a compound, a crossbow is the way to go to allow you to hunt during bow season. I am all for giving people more opportunity to hunt and if a crossbow is your way to hunt, have a good time.

Idaho Universities gearing up for guns on campus bill

We need to get this going in Tennessee. -
The best thing to do is to just carry discreetly. The man did that and is thankfully alive because of his decision. Drug addicts like to hold up pharmacies and it would be wise to have one there, especially if you work there. Unfortunately most any major corporation is going to have this sort of silly policy. You just have to deal with it the best that you can and work around it without drawing attention to yourself while carrying.

Does Schermerhorn Symphony Center Ban?
300winmag replied to MidfieldMarauder's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Yeah I wouldn't call a place and ask if they allow guns. That is how Regions got the no guns signs was due to people open carrying in the branches. Lucky that Starbuck's still has of yet not put up legal no gun signs in this state. Most any place is going to say no. You have a permit and generally you are going to be legal in most places you go. That is the whole point of getting a permit. Keep it concealed and it won't matter what an organization's policy is. -
Negligent Discharge in Cordova Malco

The felony reckless endangerment was the bad one for him to deal with. It was interesting to see the prosecutor drop 'no guns sign' fine deal. I wonder if the guy is just going to receive diversion for misdemeanor endangerment and then in time that will go off his record. -

Most any corporate or large non profit organization is going to have a no weapons policy. The permit just keeps you from getting a weapons charge, but doesn't keep places from disallowing weapons. The best thing to do is to just carry as long as you are legal and keep it concealed. -
What is a "weapon" for TN school carry?
300winmag replied to macville's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Do not ever say that you have a weapon at a school in this state. If you have a baseball bat in your vehicle, you have a glove and ball. If you have a knife, it is a tool for opening things or cutting up fruit. A 4 d cell Maglite is to use as a flashlight when you have car trouble. It is pretty clear now that you can have a firearm in your vehicle anytime at a school in TN just about anytime IF you have a handgun carry permit. Pepper spray does not seem to be a weapon in TN. A few states do consider pepper spray a weapon. -

300winmag replied to macville's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I was under the impression that pepper spray was legal at schools in TN. At least you can have a loaded firearm in your vehicle at a school now if you have a permit. The gun in your truck and pepper spray carried on you are better than nothing. -
Texas open-carry gun groups threaten to leave NRA
300winmag replied to The Legion's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
The news media really dislikes guns for the most part. These guys in Texas are making all responsible gun owners look bad to the general public that watches the news. Good luck getting any improvements in carry laws when these fools are put on TV. The minute a pro gun group say tries to legalize carry in schools for licensees, you will see images of these idiots on TV. -
Thankfully this is a law that has not really been applied. But it is a bad law that has the potential to be used in the future and cause folks a lot of hassle. We need to change it while we are ahead.
-
People who want to quietly carry a handgun for protection are being lumped in with these clowns. If these clowns have not figured it out yet, then they need to learn that the media generally hates guns and will do anything to make guns look bad to the general public. These guys are playing right into that media game and are being used to make guns and those of us carry look bad.

I saw some dude open carrying today.

http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/930 If it is a federal building, not a federal courthouse, it looks like it could be a misdemeanor. Federal courthouse is a felony charge. There is an exception that is given to federal buildings but not fed courthouses. I also was under the assumption that USPS buildings were not federal facilities. TVA, Federal Reserve, etc are technically federally chartered organizations, and I thought USPS fell in that category. (a) Except as provided in subsection (d), whoever knowingly possesses or causes to be present a firearm or other dangerous weapon in a Federal facility (other than a Federal court facility), or attempts to do so, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 1 year, or both. (d) Subsection (a) shall not apply to— (1) the lawful performance of official duties by an officer, agent, or employee of the United States, a State, or a political subdivision thereof, who is authorized by law to engage in or supervise the prevention, detection, investigation, or prosecution of any violation of law; (2) the possession of a firearm or other dangerous weapon by a Federal official or a member of the Armed Forces if such possession is authorized by law; or (3) the lawful carrying of firearms or other dangerous weapons in a Federal facility incident to hunting or other lawful purposes.
