  1. That is kind of what I like about the system that Mississippi has in place. You have always been able to carry a loaded firearm in your car there without any sort of license and somewhat open carry depending on opinion. Now you can open carry for free, conceal carry in a belt holster for free without a license, carry on a regular license (with restrictions), or carry on an enhanced licence (training required just like TN's permit) and carry virtually anywhere, including K-12 schools, legally. I believe you are limited from carrying in courtrooms during court and police stations with an enhanced license. No it's not a perfect system but the system helps the vast majority of good guys carrying and in my opinion is better than what we have in TN. In an ideal world we would be able to own Class 3 firearms without a tax stamp, mail order firearms just like it was up until the late 60's, and be able to carry in all 50 states anywhere legally without any sort of license or restrictions. That's just not going to happen unfortunately and we have to make the best of it if reasonable politicians are willing to work with 2nd Amend groups and help cut restrictions.
  2. I'm going to guess that if LEOSA is constitutional, then a national reciprocity law would be constitutional also. FOPA for interstate travelers transporting firearms in trunks has not been challenged on a constitutional basis. States rights have been thrown out the window on many issues.
  3. Were people limited on where they could legally carry with these old sheriff cards or could you just carry anywhere you wanted, such as a college campus?
  4. JayC Exactly. Those private employment policy related gun bills should have never been proposed. A private employer can dismiss employees in TN for no reason at all the way I understand it so what does that sort of law protect? If your employer does not like guns and he knows you keep a gun in your car, he'll just tell you he canned you for some other reason instead of you keeping the gun in the car at work. Don't ask don't tell is the best way to handle that at most businesses. I agree with you that state gun rights orgs need to concentrate on removing criminal penalties for carrying in certain locations VS feel good laws. You only get so much time to try to pass a bill and the legislature is not going to spend all its time on gun bills.
  5. I'm going to guess a lot of people in TN carried illegally and a lot of police would not give people tickets/arrest otherwise law abiding people carrying handguns before permits were fairly easy to get. Considering that it is a misdemeanor to illegally carry, a lot of folks probably just figured their lives were worth more than the fine if their state/county would not give them a permit.
  6. I don't know if these were NRA sponsored bills or a state level rights sponsored bills, but we had a 'gun free zone' liability bill and also a bill that changed the wording of our 'no gun fine signs' that became law this year. Both are worthless political noise laws that do not benefit really anyone carrying a handgun. The time spent on those bills could have been used on a solid bill that removed the misdemeanor weapons charge (yes we can get fined even after paying our dues to the state for a permit) for carrying past a 'no gun' sign. It's crazy that we can get a weapons charge for doing business at our local power company, city or county government offices, or visiting someone at a hospital. The college carry bills that became law this year were so poorly worded that only full time employees can carry at public colleges. The rest of us risk a felony charge for carrying at a public college. Private colleges have to 'allow' people through policy to carry in order to not get charged with a felony weapons charge. We all know that no private college is going to allow carry through policy so those are still basically illegal to carry at. Again I don't know if those were NRA sponsored or state level rights org sponsored bills but these do not help folks either.
  7. For a state in this part of the country, carry laws really did stink here until a few years ago when it became legal to carry in places that serve alcohol and also some of the local parks. If you really wanted to follow the law and have any type of social/business life, you had to always leave your gun in the car when you went out to eat at a decent restaurant. I had heard that people say over ten years ago could not even have a gun in their vehicle at a liquor store or restaurant WITH a permit! Also, you could not even have a loaded rifle or shotgun in your vehicle in this state, again even with a permit. That was finally changed a couple of years ago so that people without permits can have loaded long guns or handguns in vehicles. Pretty much every state around Tennessee has some form of legal loaded vehicle carry without a permit and also it is legal to open carry in most of the surrounding states without permits. Three have constitutional concealed carry. Long gun carry in or out of vehicles in most of the surrounding states again has always been legal. I personally think for the training requirements and the cost of getting a permit here the restrictions are a joke again compared to surrounding states. You can get an enhanced permit in Mississippi (same training we have in TN) and carry legally virtually anywhere including schools. Alabama (you literally pay money and in some counties issued permits on spot after background check) and Missouri you can also carry pretty much anywhere (including schools and colleges) without fear of felony charges if you have a permit. I know in KY and VA you can also legally carry on college property with a permit. Our 'no gun' signs that we can get fined for are another joke that should have been eliminated by our 'pro gun' legislature.
  8. JAB, I'd like our handgun carry permit to basically be treated just like the 'enhanced' license is treated in Mississippi where you are legal just about everywhere, including K-12 schools and colleges. Then if you don't want to buy a permit, you follow basically what the present carry laws are. Mississippi did that and it is working great for them. Those who want to spend the time in a class and shoot at the range can then carry and not worry about where they are legal or not. Those that don't, have to be mindful of where they are at. People without permits have to follow the same rules as people who have permits w/o training (MS originally did not require any training for permits until the enhanced permit came along 5 years ago). It's not ideal, but I think it is much more politically acceptable and able to pass VS just going straight to permit less carry with ZERO restrictions. You're never going to have politicians support a bill to legalize that. Me personally, i'd gladly take an enhanced permit to carry anywhere VS the situation we have now with the various places that we are illegal to carry in. Here's what Mississippi pro gun folks did that the politicians did get behind and pass with their governor signing it into law over time. 1. Legal car carry and sort of gray open carry. 2. Somewhat restricted licensing system (no training required) with list of off limits locations. 3. Enhanced Carry (training required) with basically no restrictions. 4. Define open carry so not gray anymore. 5. Constitutional carry with restrictions. We are probably at Step 2 in Tennessee. We can keep on trying for Constitutional carry every year and gain nothing with the make up of our legislature or governor OR we can at least gain some ground with enhanced carry and less restrictions and THEN at a later time go for open carry and constitutional carry.
  9. Federal gun free school zones act would still apply to people without permits even if the state weapons criminal offenses were removed. Unless other parts of the weapons statute was modified, it would still be illegal to carry on 'posted property', K-12 schools, and colleges. We could legally carry on K-12 school property and inside K-12 schools WITH a permit if our state law allowed it. Right now with the make up of the legislature and governor, I'd rather limited time spent on removing restrictions on permits VS time spent on constitutional carry in 2017. I don't see the point in spending time on something just to make a political statement when you could use that same time on something that can actually pass. Politicians will only entertain so many gun bills each year. Time was wasted in 2016 on bills that honestly had zero positive effect for people with or without permits. Bills like the 'posted property liability' law and changes to company HR related weapons policies were just political noise for politicians to appear pro gun in an election year. The same time could have been spent on removing the 'no gun sign' criminal law and also putting in an exemption for people with permits on school property. Those two things would make carry legal in a lot more places.
  10. JayC, I agree with you that too much time has been spent on getting into the employer-employee relationship (a civil issue when it comes to weapons) VS improving the criminal weapons statutes to favor those with handgun carry permits. There is no reason that people in Mississippi can get what they call an enhanced license that is basically the same as ours and be legal just about anywhere including K-12 schools while we risk felony charges for carrying on K-12 and university property. Someone should not risk a misdemeanor weapons charge over a 'no gun' sign either when they visit someone at a hospital, do business at a local government building, or help someone get luggage out of the airport terminal. With a republican super majority and republican governor, these guys need to earn their NRA A ratings and have no excuse for not fixing these problems than can snag good folks.
  11. You probably would need to effectively lobby key positions such as committee chairs, house speaker, and LT governor to get something like that through. Without those positions on board, it is not getting through the legislature.i In my opinion, you need to fix some of the present off limits locations in order to have effective constitutional carry. What good is constitutional carry if you can't legally carry in certain locations? If constitutional carry were passed today, there would be a bunch of places you will not be able to legally carry in this state.
  12. Falling from a treestand is probably the biggest risk to deer hunters.
  13. I think that was related to Florida's safe commute law for employees which means that employees caught with guns in their car at Disney can still be fired. I don't think that relates to people carrying on licenses and where you can or can't legally carry with that license. You can also keep a gun in your glovebox there without a license.
  14. It's not illegal to carry at Disney World if you have a license. There is no such thing as a 'posted' goofy no gun sign like here that you can get a weapons charge over. You just can't carry in the bar areas of restaurants in the park just like anywhere else in Florida. If they are running metal detectors now, that does make it more difficult to carry a gun there.
  15. You can bait bears and deer in a lot of places to hunt them. I have hunted deer over corn feeders out of state. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't just like hunting deer with dogs out of state.
  16. Yeah those criminals were a threat to life both inside and outside a house. It is kind of like how some bank robbers may run off without a weapon at hand and may not be a threat, such as if they used a note. But then you have bank robbers that are running off carrying guns that are ready to use and thus would be a threat to life to other people in public say on the sidewalk or street. That situation in Atlanta was not a home burglary. That was an armed robbery and also if the robbers shot at the woman attempted murder. That was a very serious violent felony.
  17. The home invaders were armed so I don't think it would have mattered where the incident took place as far as it being a justified homicide. It could have been in the yard or anywhere in public since they were carrying weapons and an obvious threat to people. Think about it this way, if they have weapons in their hand, they are still probably a threat when heading out of the house because they can turn right around and shoot the woman. It isn't like they were running out unarmed and could not hurt anyone.
  18. Yes you would still need a big cooler and ice but I think you can get the quarters on ice quicker with the gutless method because you can cut it up right where it falls instead of waiting to get it back to your camp to skin.
  19. I think you can carry switchblades and batons because the license in FL covers all concealed weapons, not just handguns.
  20. Do we even have constables in Shelby County? I know they have them in Texas but they are full commissioned police officers just like the sheriff deputies that go through academy. In some places they do not have to go through the police academy and it is more of an elected position for someone to have a title.
  21. Have you thought about trying the gutless method of quartering a deer? You might want to look up youtube videos on it. It might save you time and you can quarter it right where it falls.
  22. You can't carry in the bar area of a restaurant and from what I understand you can't carry in a place that is strictly a bar or night club. You can drink there while carrying in a restaurant. No gun signs are just treated as a trespass issue. Some good things and not so good like you can't carry at an athletic event legally. Most of the list probably won't apply to you going there for business or vacation unless you are going to a professional sporting event or a bar.
  23. Yes, I remember you were supposed to put a handgun on the car seat/in view when in Missouri quite a while back. I had heard KC, Saint Louis, and possibly other towns had ordinances against open carry that was otherwise legal under state law.
  24. This guy could have been paid to act like this for the story. Who knows. But you can't remove constitutional rights of US citizens because a few people misuse those rights.
  25. 2. Carrying of a concealed firearm in a location specified in subdivisions (1) to (17) of subsection 1 of this section by any individual who holds a concealed carry permit issued pursuant to sections 571.101 to 571.121, or a concealed carry endorsement issued prior to August 28, 2013, shall not be a criminal act but may subject the person to denial to the premises or removal from the premises. There is a list of locations on handgunlaw.us for Missouri that you can be asked to leave from with a license. If you are concealing without a license, those locations will be a misdemeanor.
