  1. Agreed. Note that the S&W 19-3 recommended by BHG123 is a K-frame gun. There are also K-frame .38s like the S&W 10, 15, 64, and 67. Cheers, Whisper
  2. Welcome, Bill 5335. You've come to a good and friendly place where there is much knowledge available. Many people recommend that women begin shooting with revolvers, but I am not convinced this is the best plan. Semiautos have advantages in some areas, particularly for concealed carry. As you and your wife are new to shooting, I agree strongly with the idea that you should get some training and should try out as many guns as possible before you buy. This will make you much better informed when you are ready to purchase. You won't know what you like or dislike until you shoot it. I've been an NRA basic pistol instructor and am now Rangemaster certified, and in my experience there are few people who can't handle a 9mm semiauto unless they have a physical disability (like BHG123 with her wrists). This is important because any cartridge less powerful than a 9mm is, in my opinion, less than desirable for personal defense. (There are .380 adherents who will disagree.) Look carefully at 9mms, or at .38 Specials if your wife is absolutely sure she must have a revolver (which carries less ammunition and is less concealable than a semiauto.) The recommendation for a S&W Shield 9mm is excellent, and they are quite affordable right now. Good luck, Whisper
  3. I did this once, back in the late 1980s, on an HBAR that I wanted to make a dedicated optics gun. Some of you are too young to remember, but in those days we didn't have the variety of low-profile gas blocks that are available now for AR builders. My modified HBAR gas block looked pretty much like the one that MP5_Rizzo has posted. Years later, when I converted the gun to a free-floater, low-profile blocks were plentiful, and I installed one of them. Cheers, Whisper
  4. TRVTH. This right here sums up the entirety of my thinking on this project. No longer interested in one of these. The Sig P365, however, still continues to be a bright shiny object....
  5. SHHHH! Keep quiet about this. The price on these little guns has already gone crazy and they are as scarce as honest politicians. Move along folks, nothing to see here, go look at that nice Glock 17 over there....
  6. Yeah, don't need this now that I know what it is. Build your own AR pistol and you'll be better off...in fact, that's what I did. Twice already. Cheers, Whisper
  7. Yeah, this is seriously interesting. Whatever it is they're doing, I can't imagine other companies won't replicate it within weeks. And, as for us home builders.... Cheers, Whisper
  8. Man, that takes me back. When I was kid back in the 1960s in Big Spring, Texas, one day my dad took me into a gun shop and I saw a Bearcat. I fell in love with it immediately. It was the coolest handgun I had ever seen. Dad was not interested -- he shot pistols competitively and he mainly liked his 1911 and his Hi Standard .22 -- and the Bearcat was $64; an astounding sum that I knew I would never be able to raise myself. Decades later, when they started making them in stainless, I was tempted once more, but there's a lot of guns you can get for $600, and a Bearcat just never rose to the top of the list. Cheers, Whisper
  9. Hmm. Yeah, I *was* interested in a Scott eVest. Guess now I'll get an Orvis. Thanks, Whisper
  10. Who in the Nashville-Smyrna-Murfreesboro area has the best prices on the Mossberg Shockwave 12-gauge? On Target had them at $349 briefly, but not any more. I see you can get them for around $310 online but when you add in shipping and transfer fees, it's almost $349. I'd be willing to pay a little more to be able to see the gun before buying and to support a local business. Thanks, Whisper
  11. Ask your avatar and see what he says. HTH, Whisper
  12. Earthlink account for me; I registered but have no confirmation email and it's not in my spam filter. Whisper
  13. Some other websites have a lot of interesting discussion of this product, but no one seems to have come up with any ideas beyond what has been developed here. I'm certainly interested, especially if this company has identified a loophole that can be exploited by others. Cheers, Whisper
  14. Thanks for the review. Mighty interesting. I've not seen one in person yet; looking forward to doing so. Although at that price competition will be stiff.... Cheers, Whisper

    SIG P365

Yeah, I just saw that in the full text of the news release. That's a ridiculous price, but I'll guess real-life prices will be closer to $500. But at that level it may be tough to compete with the Shield and the 43. I guess we'll see.... Cheers, Whisper

    SIG P365

I carry a Shield most of the time but this looks interesting. I will give it a look when it comes out. Can't seem to find any pricing info so far.... Cheers, Whisper
  17. I read many good things by and about Gabe White and am strongly considering this one if I can make it fit the budget.
  18. Since I've expressed my negative opinion of Longmire, I'll restore balance by saying something positive about another Netflix series: Peaky Blinders. It's a gangster series that begins in Birmingham, England, right after World War I (each season moves forward another year or two in time). Outstanding. I just finished season 4, which was release on Dec. 21. Lots of period-correct firearms, used abundantly. Enjoy, Whisper
  19. I wanted to get some of these for friends who shoot, but I couldn't find any place that had them in stock. Cheers, Whisper
  20. The Kel-Tec and the Ruger are big surprises to me. I would have predicted the Glock 19 and the M&P Shield 9. It's interesting that Sig is the only manufacturer with two guns on the list. Cheers, Whisper
  21. Yeah, now that I know those exist, I might need one of them. Cheers, Whisper
  22. The Nov. 30 issue of the Nashville Business Journal had a story about culture shock at the Beretta plant in Gallatin, including some reports of quality control issues. But it also had photos of guns being made, including Wilson Combat models. As has been said before, arfcom is hardly an authoritative source. Cheers, Whisper
  23. One problem with the books -- many and massive technical errors about firearms. In the first book, a major clue to solving a case relies on the author's misunderstanding the difference between rifled and smoothbore barrels, and the claim that Glaser made their famous Safety Slug in .50 caliber (they didn't). There's also the usual lesser errors made by authors who write about guns they have never handled -such as confusing J-frame S&Ws with the Colts. It was annoying enough to me that I quit reading after the second book. YMMV.
  24. I think Rick has actually improved a little this year; he handled himself pretty well when the trash people put him against Winslow and then against Winslow 2.0. He still whines too much and is a wholly incompetent marksman, but at least he doesn't piss and moan constantly like he did last season. One big improvement this season is Daryl, who -- after his imprisonment by the Saviors last year -- fully understands that the best way of handling all interactions with the Saviors is by delivering fatal violence. Cheers, Whisper
