Shooting Locations for felons
Whisper replied to Airgun Plinker's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
I can't help on all of your questions, but here's this: 1. It is legal for a felon to hunt with bows and with antique (black powder) arms and to take hunter safety courses in Tennessee. You can take the course online: https://www.tn.gov/twra/hunting/hunter-education/online-hunting-education.html 2. I don't know anything specific about western Tennessee but I know that the firing range at Long Hunter State Park does not require a background check to shoot on the range. I assume it follows the same rules as all other state ranges. But I'd be careful not to handle anyone's modern firearm while on the range. 3. No help here; I'm in Middle Tennessee. Stay clean and straight, and good luck to you. I applaud you for wanting to stay within the law. Cheers, Whisper -
Look at stats for defensive firearms use by armed citizens. Also, you might read the recently released "Real Shootouts of the LAPD -- Off Duty Incidents, Volume 1" by Claude Werner. This studies every off-duty shooting (burglary, assault, etc.) by LAPD officers since 2005, so it should be similar to what average citizens experience. One similarity: Firing of more than two shots is extremely rare. That said, it doesn't mean that the need for more than two shots never happens, and you don't want to be the statistical outlier if you're the person involved in a defensive situation where you need more than that. I carry a semiauto most of the time. But just yesterday I carried a J-frame 38 for a while. Make your own choices, but you might take some comfort in the knowledge that it's extremely unlikely you will need more than five rounds. Cheers, Whisper

Tennessee 2A Sanctuary Passes in Senate
Whisper replied to E4 No More's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Unlikely it will do anything to help. But it certainly won't hurt. -
I've had an extremely good experience buying and selling right here. Met a few nice folks, too. The volume of ads is not such that you'll find every obscure or specialized thing you might be wanting unless you wait a long time, but interesting items show up daily. And if you're selling a decent quality firearm at a far price, you'll likely find a ready buyer. Now, one of you go buy that M&P 45 that I have listed. Cheers, Whisper

Man, I hate to read about you losing your ARs. I wish there was a way you could transfer them here to Tennessee for safekeeping until you move. Sort of like people who live in California but store their guns with friends in Arizona until they are able to flee. At least you can buy new ones when you get here. If you don't wait too many years, that is -- President Xiden is likely to try some more gun grabs before the end of his term. Good luck, Whisper

Well, that's an excellent idea. whether we're talking about the Floyd homicide, the price of tea in China, or the sun rising in the east.

Agreed. Most politicians despise the whole Bill of Rights. -
1969 Browning T-Bolt 22LR ***CHRISTMAS PRICE DROP ***
Whisper replied to derf's topic in Firearms Classifieds
These are great old guns and are a particular interest of mine. What derf didn't mention is that this is the T-2 model, which came with checkered stock, unlike the plainer T-1 model. Cheers, Whisper -
This is important. When you decide not to patronize a store because of its statist policies, the store manager needs to know it. And needs to know that you'll be sharing your experience on social media with all your friends. Good job, Reefer. Cheers, Whisper

I read it also. Pretty disgraceful. If it was one of us, we'd be in jail.

Haven't seen one of these in a while but I believe that's a 6-inch barrel and not a 4. Cheers, Whisper

Anyone do parkerizing in Nashville area?
Whisper replied to Whisper's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
WDT, I didn't find anything locally. There's the guys in Loretto that billmeek mentioned, and I found a guy in Memphis, but no one around Nashville. Also, I can't find a local gunsmith who does bead blasting and seems confident of what he's doing. Maybe I need to start training for a new career.... Cheers, Whisper -
Might be too late for this to help, but I agree with RandyB. One of my nephews has a EAA Witness 10mm, and although I was never particularly interested in the Witness, I recently had a chance to shoot it, and that thing is nice. I had a Colt Delta 10mm when they first came out and I wound up selling it partly because I didn't think it would hold up under heavy use (something that was subsequently borne out). But that Witness handles the 10mm well...mainly because it's heavy as a boat anchor, but if you're buying a 10mm, you're not looking for a lightweight gun. Straight shooting, well mannered, and reasonably affordable for a 10mm. If you decide against the Glock, it's worth a look.

Anyone know of a gunsmith who does glass bead blasting on a stainless firearm? I called a couple of the local gun stores and I was astonished at their quotes. There are well-known custom smiths in other states who charge much less, but I'd prefer to do business locally if possible. Thanks, Whisper

I don't buy or sell with anyone who has no reputation points, and I'm confident others here take the same precaution. I think it's fine for new folks to get involved in the classifieds if they pay to become benefactors, but I just feel better dealing with someone who's been around a little while. Cheers, Whisper

You can find Remington 870s that accept choke inserts. And the 870 is a candidate worth considering for any purpose for which a shotgun is suitable.

As I understand it, restricting the amount of the virus you are exposed to limits the severity of the infection. Some articles: https://www.healthline.com/health-news/wearing-a-mask-may-reduce-how-sick-you-get-from-covid-19 https://thehill.com/changing-america/well-being/prevention-cures/515754-wearing-a-mask-could-reduce-covid-19-severity https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-07-21/masks-help-avoid-major-illness-coronavirus https://medicalxpress.com/news/2020-09-mask-immunity-covid-viral-dose.html

Red333, I'm glad you weren't killed. But your experience doesn't prove that masks don't work and COVID doesn't kill. It proves that COVID doesn't kill everyone that gets it, which has been known from the start of the pandemic. Also, if you were wearing a mask without fail and still caught the disease, it doesn't mean that the mask didn't work -- masks reduce the chances of infection, and limit severity, but they aren't a guarantee against infection...which was also known from the start. Maybe if you hadn't worn a mask you would have gotten an infection too serious to survive? We can't know. There are people every year who recover from heart attacks and cancer -- that doesn't mean that heart attacks and cancer don't kill. They kill millions every year. Like I said, I'm glad you survived COVID, but don't draw the wrong lesson from your experience. As for your last point, I like freedom of choice for everything, so I agree with you. Cheers, Whisper

I think I saw somebody using that first one in Mad Max: Fury Road.

I can't address how carefully Oswald's rifle was handled by police officers and other local and federal authorities before the rifle was tested, and who might or might not have tinkered with the scope or its mounts. But I've stood in the window of the book depository right next to the window where Oswald took the shot (you can't stand in the actual window now because it's blocked off by a plexiglass barrier). And, looking down into the street and wondering if, shooting from a rest, I could hit a man-sized target less than 90 yards away and moving almost directly away from me at a slow speed (11.2 mph), I feel confident I could. And I'm only a competent rifle shot. A good while back one of the TV networks hired a guy to fire a simulation of the Kennedy assassination to see if he could make the hits. He did. At this point none of the people who want to believe conspiracies will be convinced there wasn't one, and none of the people who want to believe the official report will be convinced it is inaccurate in its main conclusions. We're never going to know any more than we do now. Probably time to move on. Cheers, Whisper

I got a laugh out of the fact that S&W has been heavily promoting that they were going to unveil a new gun at 8 p.m. Eastern on March 15...and then Ruger announces the Max-9 several hours earlier, without previous notice. More choices are a good thing. Cheers, Whisper

The FEGs are great guns. One cautionary note if you get one -- most but not all of the parts will interchange with the Browning or FN. If you decide to replace parts in yours, check first. Cheers, Whisper

What exactly is a fair price for 7.62x39mm ammo these days? I rarely shoot that caliber and have a decent supply of ammo. Maybe I should put it in the classified section.
