  1. So, when I was hunting in TX one of the guys there shot a doe in the neck with a 16" barrel 5.56 AR at about 60 yards. She dropped like a bag of hammers, but after butchering I'm not sure why because it wasn't a ton of trauma. It's not like it took her head off, and the entry and exit wounds were like pencil holes. When we got up there she was still kicking, so he shot her in the head. Again, no watermelon type head explosion (this was IMO TOO close of a shot for safety so call it point blank). Now it may have broken her neck, and there was definitely damage to the tissue to the point the meat was ruined. But not what I expected.   He was definitely shooting FMJ.... I think it was the 55gr XM193, but not entirely sure the exact round. I know there is an exhaustive amount of data on this out there, but I don't pretend to understand all the ballistics talk. It got me to thinking, it would CERTAINLY suck very badly to get hit by one.... but a wound like that not in the neck seems like taking a round like that it's very plausible that someone would be able to fight back for at least a short time. At least be able to shoot back. And in a defensive situation, that's not desirable to say the least.   I don't know a lot about the ballistics, just seen from hunting experience that I don't feel like even the baddest mofo out there would be able to fight back after taking one from a .308 let a lone a 30-06. 5.56 is the smallest round in my safe (aside from the .22 I got for my boys this year)....   Is 5.56 FMJ just completely useless? I mean her neck was only 4"-5" thick at this area, was that just not enough to fragment or something?   Has anyone here ever killed anything with 5.56 FMJ rounds, or have experience shooting living things with it? I know it's against hunting regs so I wouldn't / haven't... but damn... I would've thought it'd been much more damage than what that doe had.   Our military are stuck with FMJ right? It's obviously got to be decently effective?   You guys know of good examples of 5.56 FMJ ballistics, like on YouTube?
  2. Installed a mossy oak graphic kit on my Remington 700 this weekend. Do you think having the barrel wrapped all the way back will affect accuracy at all? It fits snugly in the stock... looks pretty cool and is easy to install, hoping it'll help with future rust issues.

  3. Gore-tex with a fleece layer under it. Under-Armor makes a killer (read expensive) fleece base layer. I typically use the bottoms only and a jacket top so I can adjust easily to meet changing conditions. And for really cold weather like I got up in Illinois 2 years ago (9 degrees with 20mph wind) I have a BassPro brand setup (Bone Dry) bibs and jacket and then I wear everything I can!
  4. Newsome station is free, and a neat little stop. Can do it and a canoe float down the harpeth by Narrows of the harpeth in the same day, which is also a neat place to explore.
  5. Yeah for the standard over the air stuff.... but I liked to have Fox Business News, etc running in my office during the day while working.
  6. Yeah, they have been recently... But my dad put the camera in indiana where it faces the morning sun... The night pictures are better
  7. Well it's been a couple of months now.....   I've got the Channel Master setup for OAT DVR, and I gotta say I like it. I think it works really well, and I like being able to record 2 shows at once. We added a Roku to the mix, which is a great little box.  - On it we have Amazon Prime and Hulu. I got the Roku 2, because it uses an IR remote and so I could use a Logitech Harmony for a single remote.   All in I really like the setup, with 2 small kids we have access to all the programming they could ever watch. Plus I've downloaded and ripped a bunch of movies to my home file server which the Roku can also play. I think we're probably going to drop Hulu soon, since we really don't use it that much.   I'm really digging the whole setup. At $180/mo when I ended Uverse everything has already paid for itself, and it has helped TV watching habits in my house.   I got us the basic Comcast setup of 25mbps for $20/mo + the cost of Prime and Hulu. And, probably less the Hulu next month.   Only thing I really miss is the network news. I used to like to flip through those. I think there's 1 show my wife doesn't get, but she'll live.... she had too many to watch previously anyway.
  8. Some times bad decisions don't have bad consequences.... Sometimes. I think he's met his quota for the month.
  9. My out of state spots are warming up! Maryland Still hoping to see this sika stag more than any of them, I'd love to take a trophy swamp ghost like this dude: But these are all some nice shooters in my book! Indiana Looking good also!
  10. I've heard James say some idiotic and purely opinion things in his videos (have never met him in person), just as I'm sure all of you have. Like how he talks about "guys who buy an XD's are.....blah blah". It's completely ridiculous. Glock isn't the only pistol that works... sorry.   I own two Springfield guns, and I like them a lot. I shoot well with them, I keep them clean, and they never fail to go bang. And I happen to like the grip safety... Maybe if I was a full-on superhuman "operator" guy in a hot war zone taking fire every day I might feel differently about the weapon of choice.... but guess what.... I'm not. In the unlikely event that I ever DO have to use one of my Springfield guns in defense, I have no doubt it will go bang flawlessly as it has every other time I've pulled the trigger.   But I guess that's my point, just because he's a loudmouth inflammatory jerk on the internet, doesn't mean that he doesn't know what he's doing. He certainly knows more than I do, and I'm sure I'd come out of one of his classes sharper than I am.   However..... I also don't have to endure #### like that to get the training I need.   I just think it's astonishing all the dick measuring.... I mean, really.... Just do you. Stop worrying about what everyone else is doing.
  11. I'm mainly a sportsman. My family has always been, and this has been the basis of my firearms exposure.   Since my boys have been born I've been more interested in firearms for self defense and defending my home. As such I've considered recently taking classes specific to those skills, but I've had a hard time with the constant dick measuring in this part of the industry. CONSTANT.   Case in point: https://youtu.be/hOsvWFlUtNM     I subscribe to both channels, Yeager and Zero.... as well as Reid's channel.     I compare this to some of the gun shops. Some of them treat you like an idiot if you ask about a gun that isn't what they like.... "Why do you want that when you could just buy a Glock".... I've had them ask me that before in a few around town. While I'm trying to spend money with them... WTF?   In the spring I'd like to take a class, from a competent instructor who won't make me feel like an a'hole. The kind that can take an average joe like myself to a better skill level....   But I constantly see this sort of thing.... (although zero doesn't seem to be the aggressor here)   I know Yeager is close to Nashville, and so is Reid....    What's your guy's take on this stuff? Where have you found classes locally that are welcoming and still competent?
  12. I was just telling my family in MD how Nashville's becoming an amusement park for drunk people. It's like the divorcee Disney world. I don't go down there unless it's for business any longer because of that.
  13. I'm seriously considering moving to Texas. Nashville isn't the same city I grew up in, and I can't imagine it getting better.
  14. Yeah, had one try to slip past me when I was sitting by the fire out back one night last year. I'm in the green hills area not far from Radnor.
  15. I've bought probably a good dozen set of tires from them (automotive turrets)... all superb experiences at good prices. Definitely my #1 spot, followed closely by gateway tire.
  16. Yeah, you're on to it.... I shot all week with the bore filthy and made clean kills with it and was on target out to 200yds. So I think whatever it is isn't affecting accuracy.   I plan on soaking it in solvent this weekend to see if it's deposit.
  17. Maybe so... might be my mind playing tricks on me. Just, I checked the bore before loading it down there to be sure it was clear and I don't recall seeing it. Maybe I'll just soak in solvent and re-clean tomorrow.
  18. Hornady SST 150gr I think it looks more like a depression with the naked eye, hard to photograph though
  19. So I have been hunting in Texas for about a week straight in the rain. For much of the time it was torrential downpour. We hunted day and night, so we were out in the weather a lot. This is what happens to your gun in that much rain. So I broke the gun down for a deep clean, since I've not really done that on it before. This gun probably has a total of 80 rounds down the barrel. And after cleaning what was a filthy bore, I noticed these areas that look like pitting or something. What is this, rust damage? Those are two different spots BTW, on opposite sides of the barrel about the same distance down the barrel from each other, near the chamber side. If it matters, the gun was spot on for several 100yd-150yd shots during the trip. Although that was on paper at a bench, I put down animals with it right where I was aiming.
  20. Looks like their website is down... maybe it changed that too.   Here's a video though:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WCzh7Zsk1c
  21. A video of some of the action as done through my ATN X-Sight... which performed very well.   https://youtu.be/4jl112v4V2k
  22. So my business partner, my dad and I went down to an associates place just outside of Meridian TX. He's got a real nice lease of about 3500 acres in the northern part of hill country. Our purpose was to have my dad hunt for a nice buck, and my buddy and I would shoot pigs. If you watch the news at all, you'd know that it rained a little out there this past week. As they tell me, this lake (120 acres and stocked with 10lb bass, which I did NOT get to fish!) only over flows about every 20-30 years. It's 100 years or so old, and this is the most anyone still alive has ever seen of it. This place was amazing. Absolutely fell in love with this country.... We couldn't (easily) get to the ridge line in the background to look around due to the flooding... but I wish we could've... would have some awesome pictures. This ranch has been on a management program for about 5 years now, so their starting to see some good populations.... great diversity here too. Rio Grande Turkey (so I'm told, I know nothing about turkeys) Like I said, we were there to hunt hogs but the flooding had them all over the place and some of the better spots were now rivers. My buddy did manage to take this small gal though: I didn't get a shot at any pigs so I took a buck out of this group: So all in it was a pretty successful trip IMO. And by the way, the new BassPro in Memphis is worth a visit!
  23. Went to Texas for hog hunting, stupid floods had them all running to high ground (hill country).... Ended up taking this dude when he stepped out. :)
  24. My TX hog hunt was a bust due to the CRAZY flooding from the hurricane.... But a buck walked out and as a result had a bad day.   This was a great trip with my Dad, and want to do a European mount of it for him. Anyone know of a decent taxidermist near Nashville that has beetles?   I thought of doing the boiling thing, but have read you should first practice on one that you don't car about because you can ruin the rack by discoloration...     Thoughts?
  25. Welcome sir, I greatly enjoy your YouTube channel. Thank you.
