  1. If you are looking for a battle rifle the CMP is selling converted M1 Garands in 308. I have a M1A standard and a M1a loaded, the standard shoots about 2 moa and the loaded about 1 moa. I also have an Armalite AR 10B and it shoots about 1,5 moa. Armalite now sells an AR 10A that uses the same magazines that everyone else uses in their 308 AR platform.
  2. In Knox county try the Moose Lodge Sportman's Association.
  3. Dean's Gun restoration in Lafo;;ette is very good with M1 Carbines and very highly respected with M1 Garands. Not to far from Knoxville.
  4. By all means buy a USGI M1 carbine is what I would purchase, The only way to be sure is to have it check by a gunsmith to make certain that all fit and functional parts are in spec.
  5. Let's say as an older generation person, my affection for the Garand stlye of weapons is a passion. My modest selection includes: M1 Carbine NPM M1 Garand H&R M 1A Standard M 1A Loaded Mini 14 Each has its charm and place. Be aware that the M 1 Garand and the M 1A's requires different burn rates of powders other than what most comercial ammo uses. Learn to reload and each will give pleanty of hours of fun.
  6. Mini-14 vs AR-15 not as I own both and both fill a niche. Being one of the older generation I do love my weapons of steel and wood. However, I am a realist and like my Matel weapons too. Realistically, I keep both for different purposes. The Mini is my truck gun and it was designed to be a 2 to 3 moa weapon from the beginning, very similiar to the M-1 Garand and the M-14. The AR platform can be built to a degree of accuracy that the old war horses could only be hopeful of attaining with several modifications and lots of TLC. To bash one and praise the other reminds me of the 1911 vs the plastic pistol vs the revolver. Enjoy each for what they are and become proficient in the manual of arms for the weapon of your choice. I often comment to everyone who asks me to help them to decide on a new weapon; pick the one that looks and feels right. Then practice, practice, practice. Have fun
  7. Way to go Dad. My grandson uses a traditional scope on his 10/22. Get a lot of ammo you will need it.

    S&W M&P 40 Pro 5

I think you should hold it and dry fire it a few times. It is longer with the 5 inch barrel, but the Pro model has many of the features of the custom shop guns without the higher price. I have the older model M&P 45 with the safety lever ( throw back to 1911 habits) , I will have to say I like the way it handles.
  9. 912 The day after we all changed.
  10. Be careful about the M-1A, you can never have just one. You will love it no matter which you one you decide to purchase. I started a thread about deciding about getting a M-1, M-1A or an AR-10. I now have 2 M-1A's and a M-1 Garand.

    S&W or Colt?

I own both and shoot both, however I have a Diamondback that I have had since 1972 and wish I still had the Python from 1973. SWMBO has the Smith for carry and likes the trigger pull.
  12. I went through the same thought process about the semi-auto .308. I decided on the loaded model of the M-1A and then bought a standard model M-1A. The standard shoots about 1.5 inch groups and the Loaded shoots a 1.25 inch group. at 100 yards. The reason that the military got away from the M-14 is because the troops though the M-14 was too heavy and the M-16 was lighter. You do not want to get me started on the discussion of the change, but let it be said the original idea for the M-16 was for support personel more than for front line grunts.
  13. The funny thing about this whole debate is the law in Arozonia is modeled after the law in California. The citizens of California need to change their law. I for one think that it is a law that should be enacted in every state and enforced. Let the Federal government understand that we believe in state's rights and they need to enforce thee deportation of all illegal aliens back to their country of origin. It is the citizens of our country and our state that elected them to office, either do the job they were elected too or be thrown out.

    "Good" Entry 1911

The Tarus PT1911 is what I bought when I was looking to buy either a Cot Gold Cup nor a Kimber. I like the way it felt and the light trigger pull. It came standard with the light rail. The only complaint that I have with the PT1911 is that it is too fun to shoot!
  15. NRA lead, follow or just get out of the way.
  16. Good suggestions all around. I want to thank each of you for your input and those who have offered a chance to try their weapons. For the present and near future, I can not get a chance to try them out, Holidays and work, you can say family along with work obligations. I have tenative plans to attend the CMP program in Oak Ridge this spring. As it stands right now, I am leaning more to the M-1 Garand early, then an AR platform and finally the M-1A. All may change if my eyes get worse, then it would be the AR with a scope.
  17. I thought about a poll, but the reason for the question instead is that a poll is a vote. A discussion is a better way of communicating information. A M-1 Garand a great battle rife. 8 shot enblock clip and Garand thumb. I have had one that I got at 14. M-1A , M-14 a son of a Garand. 10 and 20 round mags that loads like an AK. Last shot one when I was 14. Next door neighbor's brother in the Corps brought both a M-1 and M-14 home with him, before his first tour of duty. AR platform is Stoner's design originally to replaced the M-14. 19 and 20 round mags but pukes where it eats. All-American line of rifles.
  18. The choice is for a reliable weapon that will be a SHTF at worst, a plinking and training weapon at best. With our current president and his staff, this might be a mute point I plan use of iron sights. I have a M-24 type weapon in .308 and a hunting weapon in 30-06. Surplus ammo and handloads are the types of ammo to be used. I have the M-4orgery for the tinkering and added enough extras to it. I have shot the M-1 Garand and a M-14. I like both, but the AR-10 platform is interesting. I promised to only get one more weapon and these are the choices I have limited to myself.
  19. I am trying to decide which rifle to get within reason. I am trying to decide between these three. The M-1 Garand, a M-1a or and AR-10 type. Limiting my purchase to just one more long weapon. I have both 30-06 and .308 bolt weapons. I dod not at his point need a match rifle, and I have a m-4orgery. Give your choice and reasons for that choice.
  20. This is my rifle, This is my gun. One is for fighting, the other is for fun. I will not give up either as when they go off they are both fun.
  21. If only our elected officials would learn this lesson instead of listening to the political correct leftist. Like Nancy said just say no. No to the so called experts on civilized behavior. We the people demand a level playing field with the thugs who would force everyone to yield to their demands through force not reason. Home defence and personal defence lies with the individual. Support for the armed citizen should be supported by all of our branches of government. Individual freedoms can only be if we decide to protect our rights, even if it means te respond to a threat to our life and those we love through the use of our weapons as a last resort.
  22. Decisions..decisions my 5 must have are: 1. 1911 full-size 2. Ruger 10/22 3. M-4orgery in 5.56 4. Bolt action in 30-06 5. Pump 12 ga. Have more but these would cover all situations, but hated to leave the rest of the family out. It is like just having only one dog, not goning to happen.
  23. A cold bore shot refers to the first shot taken with the rifle, with a clean bore at near the temperature of its surroundings. It is usually referred as the first shot of the day as the bore heats up the point of impact can change.
  24. Due to the way my work is scheduled, I would not be able to make the seond weekend in September. I f you are shooting the second weekend in October I would take a couple of vacation days. I would like to see if I can shoot the rifle at distance. Old eyes probably can't see that far.
  25. I just wish I had this information earlier. I have to work every weekend unless I can get information earlier. I do want to take the CMP course and shoot the course at 1000 yards with my rifle but it does not fit in the guidelines list as it it a custom rifle base on the M-24 style sniper rifle built by predator. Pu on a good show for the rest of the country to see that Tennesse is the home of shooting stuff.
