From what I gathered from another thread on here about satellite phones, firstly they are not that amazingly expensive (calling plans seemed to be about double that of a regular cell) and secondly, the satellites are not that evenly distributed and have higher density some places than others. I have no idea about the Indian Ocean specifically though.

Wile-e, I don't think your security ideas are out of line, I think what people are getting at is that if you haven't already made that decision, one stranger wandering along the edge of your property may not be a reason to lurch that way.   With that said, you gave some food for thought. I have already started going the camera route. Is there any particular motion sensor you prefer? Perhaps this should be its own thread.

  It is.   I try to avoid doing that kind of thing coming from a completely different continent but there are a couple of things that just plain are better. At least you guys are starting to get the beer right now.
