  1.   I've done two barrels with the "holding the vice down on the table" technique and reliably obtained the correct torque (with adjustment needed for the alignment of the gas tube hole, of course). There's absolutely no reason a simple home-made vice wouldn't achieve what is needed. Not too impressed with the truck bed thing either. 1)Most of your truck weight is up front, 2)It's sprung weight, you're not just lifting the truck, the springs are helping. I regularly lift the front of my car that much by hand just to slip the wheel ramps up against the wheels.   Sorry, that probably sounds a bit pissy. Not the intention. For comparison, I often use a piece of 2*6 levered under the tow hitch to break the bead on tires and I reckon I've lifted the back-end of my vehicles around 6" in doing so.
  2. I'm sure something could be done with some 2x4s and a couple of bolts.
  3.   I think I got mine from Big Lots. It's just a cheap-n-nasty but it does the job.
  4. That is not a conversion. They actually made them like that. Though they didn't sell a whole lot and many ended up on farms and have been restored since. Some of us don't really consider the new mini a mini but just a small BMW. For size comparison: The Nashville British car show is on the 11th if you'd like to check some out first hand. Nice excuse to wander around the Parthenon anyway.
  5. Or an actual mini pickup...
  6.   The safe thing to do would be a quick visit to a nearby secluded lake. Sadly, people have got in big trouble for "doing the right thing" and handing things in before. I am glad things worked out sanely here though.
  7. I have a vice but I didn't have to tighten it down to get the barrel nut torqued properly (I have bolt holes in my bench for when needed but that's not often so I keep it out of the way and I was doing my gunsmithing in the living room).
  8.   Probably made it out of an old gas tank with seatbelts for straps :D
  9. Indeed, let's not forget that Popeye was the outcome of misguided government meddling anyway.   Eek. Urban legend.
  10. Why don't you just trace from the pic?   Edit: Beaten to it. Though that pic looks like it wasn't taken from directly above so some adjustment might be required or just find a different pic..   Edit2: A quick google shows quite a lot of variance in the shape in any case so I'm sure you'll be free to bring some of that Grand Torino styling that we all love to it anyway.
  11.   I guess if they want to keep up with the times, they could give him an e-cig which could be used for much the same purposes. Though, of course, that tats would have to be full sleeves and his ears (and possibly nose) should be full of metalwork.   Bear in mind that Popeye was not a navy sailor AFAIK.   And I only ever knew Bluto. I guess the "Brutus" years passed me by.
  12. Wood for the trees, people...   The root of the problem? State run schools.   And school athletic programs, come to that.
  13.   Bleh, I bet they were in Dolby 5.1 too.     (Sorry, couldn't resist)
  14. A lot was done immediately after the war that in hindsight was not really wise. In the aftermath of the war and without a strong legally protected tradition of free speech, it's perhaps understandable the steps that they took there. However, even with (and, perhaps, especially with), nationalism bubbling up here and there throughout Europe, it's time to end those restrictions. However, once government has its hands on some power, it's loathe to give it up.
  15. I have a 4l V8 if anyone wants it. Not currently in a running condition.
  16.   :stir:
  17.   Something doesn't smell right about that either. The article said "an architect" but what's that about? He woke up one morning and thought "Well, I'm done designing Waffle House franchises for a while, let's go out to the shed and knock up a replica of a building where the ATF and FBI brough shame upon themselves and women and children died horribly"?
  18.   And yet created a bunch more in the process. Criminals with automatic weapons, flashbangs and anger issues.
  19. I've given some thought to adding one of these: The basement door has its issues and the crawl space could actually be more secure.
  20.   My concern would be if the tiles are glazed, that could be some fast moving sharp edges to be dealing with.
  21.   Meh, a quick Google image search for "brick wall bullet holes" and I wouldn't say "I'll take my chances" but I'd stack it up against aluminum siding and drywall any day of the week.
  22. I have a brick house so you'd have to be going some to get bullets through that. The windows are another matter, however. I don't really see a good solution to that. Some kind of shutter might work but there's some lead-time involved in setting that up. Likely a retreat to the basement would be in order but that comes with its own issues.     This is the crux of the matter. If things get that bad, you'll probably be lucky to get away with what you can carry. That's something you should be mentally (and logistically) prepared to do.
  23. Could be interesting to develop a peer-to-peer flagging system.
  24. Smart move to piss off the police. . Round my way, they* give em free food.   And in Texas too?       *Generic they. I'm not sure about Waffle house
