  1. I dealt with them for years before the show and they were always extremely nice and helpful. The folks who say they are jerks are usually second hand tv watchers. That being said the show changed things around there and it is hard for them to be the same family owned small business they used to be.
  2. Devils advocate - the buyer also has an obligation to know what they are buying. If he takes back the gun he has to sell it "used" at a loss even after it is fixed by Ruger .since it left on a 4473. If you keep it and send it back or he sends it back and they fix it no one is out money. Only the frustration and wait for the return. It unfortunately is the only scenario close to a win-win.   That being said the box should have been opened and the gun inspected prior to selling as a good business practice. I have seen more guns than I would have thought possible damaged or in need of repairs immediately after opening the box. If he had inspected it like he was supposed to, then problem would have been averted. It you or your wife had inspected it prior to buying it, problem would have been averted.
  3. ... and they are doing this despite the bill that passed both houses and signed by the President prior to the shutdown that mandated they be paid.
  4. You can get them from Kel-Tec directly and they are windage adjustable. You work the elevation on the front sight post. I recommend the aluminum version. Aluminum version http://www.keltecweapons.com/su-16-and-su-22-rifles/su-16-parts/su16b-365-rear-peep-sight-b-model/ Polymer version http://www.keltecweapons.com/su-16-and-su-22-rifles/su-16-parts/su16-230-rear-sight-peep-all-models/
  5. The little round thing IS the retainer. The ends of the guide rod (open end in your picture) fit on the sides of the round piece and the pressure of the spring holds it in place. Like this:
  6. Then it's not broke. The little round thing fills the gap between the two ends but it's a little tricky getting it to hold. It helps to have a 3rd hand. You have to pull the spring back to get the flexibility to insert the retainer then let the spring back up to hold the retainer in place while not letting the retainer twist out or fall out. Have fun.
  7. I haven't drilled the FS block yet. I was thinking of just replacing the GB and FS with correct Bulgarian style and having it fully de-neutered. Right now I have a crush washer and loc-tight on it.
  8. Is that the rear section or the front section? If it is the front then you are missing the retaining piece. If it is the rear you can weld it or get a new one.
  9. Seems he may be finally out. Of course the fact CNN let him stay this long shows their dedication to the looney left, so they will probably replace him with someone cut from the same cloth. Rumor is Katie Couric may replace him. How many fail attempts does she get and what is she doing to get this many big opportunities? http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/oct/1/piers-morgans-gig-end-cnn-actively-looking-replace/
  10. Yep, it happens. They have to take them out of the box because with the Ruger's they kinda sit on top with all the paperwork and never got put back in. The employess probably didn't know they came with the gun and assumed that was the case.   I will add that the first gun I bought when In moved to Nashville (8 yrs ago) was a Springfield XD9 Service at Academy. There had been some hoopla about the original XD's finish rusting and so they switched to a Melonite finish after (IIRC) the 2nd or 3rd year of production. Well, after I got home I got to thinking that mine didn't look the same as other "new" xd's I was seeing so I ran the serial with Springfield. Turns out it was 4 years old production wise with the original finish but was new to Academy.   Evidently, they have regional buyers who store things in warehouses until they think a store needs it and that gun was sitting in a warehouse for 4 years before they put it in the store. The manager said they had a "no return policy" on firearms but would check with a higher up corporate person. He got back to me and brought in a new production gun from another store and swapped me. This was the Rivergate Academy. I initially was pretty upset, but they were very nice handling an oddball situation.
  11. Failed to remember that Shellac bubbles and blister with heat so I stripped off the shellac and redid everything with Minwax Gunstock and Tung-Oil. I'm happier with the results this go round. It's a little more red than the pics indicate.
  12. This. Century generally doesn't do anything to AK's anymore. They just import them. Any mods they have done are farmed out to contractors because of the issues they had in the past. You still want to see it in person if it is a WASR. Most I've seen are fine but I saw one last night that was wrong from one end to the other.   The Yugo's (Serbian)/Zastava's are very nice. Built on the heavier RPK receiver and their fit and finish are generally very good. Wood on them is very nice as well. Their only "drawback", to some,is they don't use chromed lined barrels. Not a huge issue IMO, but to some it is an issue. Especially if it is a 5.45 variety. The nicest variant on the market is the Vepr's but they are low imports at the moment. They use a a heavy RPK (1.6mm vs. 1.0mm receiver) and a heavy chrome lined hammer forged barrel. Absolute best thing out there from any measurement.     Thing to remember about Ak's is that when people talk a bout a good and a bad Ak they are mostly talking about aesthetics. Even an AK with canted sights, GB, or rear trunnion is still going to run longer than you will probably live and if is is a "finish" issue, satin/semi-gloss hi-temp rattle can is almost identical to what the Russians are using on production guns.
  13. I know you like it but I'd get the refund. I don't think longevity will be the companies claim to fame and you might not be able to get the same deal in the future.
  14. Yeah I started that route but the front sight wouldn't budge with a hammer and punch or gear pullers. I have to find someone with a press and do it right.
  15. So, I got this in a trade and it had the ugly thumbhole stock and hand-guards painted green. Looked Rough. Since then I have threaded the barrel, added a TWS Dog Leg rail w/ Kel-Tec rear peep sight, stripped the paint off the hand-guards and refinished them in several coats of orange shellac. Ordered an Ironwoods stock back in July and just got it this last week. It is beautiful! Finished the stock in several coats of orange shellac and am pretty happy with how it turned out. Contemplating getting the IWD hand-guards to match better but I like the darker shade of the Chu wood. Only real difference is the Chu wood is more porous and has more imperfections ( for cheap wood, I kinda like it) than the solid birch of the IWD. Either way this is a sweet gun. Now that I have the stock I can finally get out and run some rounds through it.
  16. So glad your happy with the pup. BTW they all have homes and every report is they are all doing very well. Kinda miss having them around though. ;-)
  17.     Gotta read them all. Q: From whom may an unlicensed person acquire a firearm under the GCA? A person may only acquire a firearm within the person’s own State, except that he or she may purchase or otherwise acquire a rifle or shotgun, in person, at a licensee’s premises in any State, provided the sale complies with State laws applicable in the State of sale and the State where the purchaser resides. A person may borrow or rent a firearm in any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes. [18 U.S.C. 922(a)(3) and (5), 922(b)(3), 27 CFR 478.29 and 478.30]   Haha, you are correct. Didn't read the whole question.
  18. Bad info on my part. Reading comprehension issue. ;)
  19. That is sweet. I'm really toying with the idea of a x54r with an Iron Woods Design Draganov setup.
  20. NO WAY, I'm laying my head on the top cover to shoot but that bullpup is SWEET!
  21. Here you go http://fox4kc.com/2013/09/19/kansas-rifle-association-calls-for-dismissal-of-ku-professor-after-controversial-tweet/
  22. Dremel that thing. The rear trunion on a mak90 is also a little different. The underside of the top of the trunion is a little lower. As to the tang, just enlarge it and then drill a small pilot hole for the screw. They are very course so it doesn't have to be fancy.
  23. That would make a little more sense. If there were a leak in the nearby propane tank and the small "pop" was the ignition of the leak and the larger explosion was the propane tank itself, that would explain everything.
